Happy Thanksgiving!

Sorry, but the Yarn Harlot can’t come to the blog right now. She is frantically cleaning her house, knitting a sweater and peeling beets. As she does these things, she is also wondering “What the (*&^%!!! was I thinking?” and feeling a little desperate, since she doesn’t know which of her stupid decisions she should regret.
The sweater and the Yarn Harlot are not on speaking terms, since it had the audacity to refuse to let its saddle shoulder fit properly. The Harlot attempted to knit in the saddle, but the sweater was displeased. It apparently wants some other kind of treatment. It’s exact goal is unknown. The Harlot has found the time to take a picture, mostly because she feels that there must be some kind of stinking proof about the kind of crap that the Rhinebeck sweater is dishing out.

On this day of Thanksgiving, the Harlot remains grateful that the biggest problem in her life is this sweater. She is very, very lucky.
Please leave a message after the tone.

  1. MMmmm, Thanksgiving feasting going on… Enjoy yours and just continue to give the RS the silent treatment for a while, as it apparently doesn’t recognize how lucky it is be with the Harlot. Happy, happy T Day!

  2. Oh Harlot. Sometimes relationships can be so bittersweet.
    Have an extra dessert today…
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. I think the sweater is very beautiful Steph…I’m sorry it isn’t cooperating…it is still beautiful.
I am also thankful for you, Mizz Harlot. You brighten my work existence greatly and inspire me to greater knitting heights.

  4. Happy Thanksgiving!
You’ll make that sweater behave. (It’s probably just sulking because you were paying attention to peeling beets instead of it. Mmm… beets!)

  5. At the risk of sounding like I’m kissing butt, I’m thankful for you too, Stephanie. I hope you have some help around there and you can enjoy your dinner too. I can smell the wonderful cooking/baking smells from here!

  6. Ok, what do you make for a vegetarian thanksgiving? One of the many reasons we don’t go veg is my husbands love for turkey.

  7. I just have to say I love your blog!!! I just found you today. On the hunt for some poncho insperation!!! I would love to start a blog my self. So much yarn…. so little time. Thank you for taking the time on such a wonderful knitting site!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Stephanie,
fall is the best season of the year!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving.
And the weater looks wonderful, it will cooperate once you block the shoulder a little, its just crunched up because of the beatiful pattern, which pulls a little in the wrong direction.
I also love the shawl your daughter is wearing… you mind if I ask about the pattern? I know my mum would love it. And its still time unitl X-mas….

  9. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Steph! I try to be intentionally thankful for something every day, and today (as others) it is you. Thanks for making me laugh, and being living proof that life with 3 daughters, ones with strong personalities, will in the end, drive you totally bonkers. At least I am not alone!

  10. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Steph! Thanks for a wonderful read and for wonderful inspiration.

  11. Saddle shoulders can be the very devil! They are aesthetically and theoretically pleasing in their continuity of pattern, and they are just plain tough to put together because of gauge differences, especially as someone else pointed out, when you are knitting cables. I have to agree — it will block out and look great!
Now beets, I do fear the beets and the knitting in the same room. Should disaster occur, just remember that the lorna’s laces sock is still out there somewhere and might be taking hostages…

  12. Dear Ms. Harlot,
You are an inspiration to this beginning knitter. I love the way the sweater is looking, even if it does have an attitude.
I also frequently find myself standing in a pooly of questionable decisions wondering which I should regret the most. I hope it all works out!
    Happy Day!

  13. reading your block backwards I can only add: Newfoundland rules! I spent three weeks there in 2002 and we had 2 days with rain (considering that Newfoundland is the rainiest place on earth with 300 wet days out of 365 thats nearly impossible). And we had a heatwave 24 Celsius, people down here in Virginia think thats already winter…..

  14. Happy Thanksgiving!
Gee… ::polls self:: I’m thankful for having found your blog. Life’s been stormy, I’m intebted to you for a BUNCH of laughs.
::raises cup o’ good cheer:: here’s to LOTS more of your writing, knitting, and spinning.

  15. I’m almost ashamed to admit that I didn’t know Canada celebrated a Thanksgiving holiday. I hope that you are enjoying your day.

  16. Happy Thanksgiving from an a Canadian down in Bama. I just discovered your blog this past week,I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time, makes me homesick for the great white north, where one can knit with wool. Your sweater is beautiful and very inspirational . For the saddle shoulders, just remember that a knit stitch is longer than it is wide ,so when you are attaching the shoulder you need to pick up 2 out of 3 stitches. That should make it lay flat. I can’t wait to see a picture of you wearing it.

  17. Happy Thanksgiving Stephanie! BTW are you near Bramelea(sp?)? I went to a prom there back in 1982. Hope the Rhinebeck sweater starts cooperating.

  18. i LOOOOVE your blog – read it every day. i am currently knitting the thrummed mittens and they are looking FINE! i would love to maybe come to the afghanalong in Nov. how do i find out where you live? also I am coming from pretty far away and need to plan this so please let me know as soon as possible. I have 6 or so squares done so far.(the mittens are taking priority right now.)thanks.

  19. MD’s get to bury their mistakes. Architects can plant vines. Knitters tend to come unraveled. This too shall be conquered, I am sure. I HAVE FAITH in your persistence AND skill.
BTW: Do you have a day job?

  20. Ya know, Steph, I don’t mean to reapply unneccessary pressure, but someone just joined the Spinning Wheel who has a gorgeous Aran sweater pictured. She knit it for her husband. She mentions starting it in her September 24th post. An Aran cardigan, with zipper sewn in and neck lined, for a man (who I would venture to guess is larger than you) and she started it less than three weeks ago.
I do believe http://www.helloyarn.com/blog.htm has thrown down the gauntlet without meaning to…

  21. You should have opted to celebrate the Thanksgiving with your southern North American neighbors. You would have over a month to go. Happy Thanksgiving. See you this weekend.

  22. Dear Yarn Harlot,
I’ve been looking at your blog several times a day, just to admire your beautiful sweater….if it’s giving you trouble, think of it as childbirth! You’ll have spawned (sorry) the most beautiful aran creation ever…love the color too. (I’ve been knitting for almost 3 years and haven’t yet tackled a sweater like that–but now I’m inspired! If you ever publish the pattern or can suggest one close to what you have designed, please do!!) Best regards and Happy Thanksgiving!

  23. The Rhinebeck sweater loves you…it just knew you needed to stretch a bit further than ever before. It feels you are learning a lot and will come out of this more experienced than ever.
How do I know this? I channeled it last night through my yarn stash.
    Good luck…and don’t give up! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  24. that sweater is GORgeous. ๐Ÿ™‚ and being a tease every once in a while (as in aforementioned sock-yarn winding incident) surely will improve the relationship in the long term. at least one can only hope.
happy canadian t-giving, by the way. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Hey busy woman! I think you should just pin the pieces of your sweater to yourself and walk around Rhinebeck. No need to do all that pesky finishing! We’ll all get the gist of the finished sweater.
    Happy Leftovers!

  26. Happy Thanksgiving Harlot!
You’ll tell that sweater who’s boss. Don’t give up. You know you love it, deep down.

  27. I think that RS forgot to tell you that you needed to measure the shoulder section and make the saddle that length. The one you have is too long. At least there will be less knitting on the second sleeve. You ARE making a sleeve for the other arm aren’t you, even if you walk around the festival with a one sleeve sweater?

  28. You blog ammuses me! I come here often to read it. I think you are brave taking on the Rhinebeck sweater. It looks great what you have done but hard. I hope it all works out for you both soon. Just remember all relationships start off with problems! But lets hope you can sort it all out! ๐Ÿ˜‰
