Random Tuesday

1. I infuriated my cat with a trip to the vet. She’s fine. I have 3rd degree scratches

and the vague feeling I should watch my back. That’s cat rage.

2. David created a podium page here. Once you submit your email address, Franklin’s gold medal icon will show up by your name on the Athletes page.  I did me.  It was very satisfying.

3. I have started and rejected a sweater. I’m not ready to talk about it.  It sucks.

4. I am making my sister legwarmers.  She said she wanted them, but she didn’t say she wanted these.

Sydney. by Stacyjoy Elkin. I like them.  I hope Erin does.  Speak now or forever wear legwarmers you hate, because I will expect you to wear them.

5. Prizes for Knitting Olympics tomorrow. Promise.

  1. I get to see that face on Thursday when we take both of the furry creatures (cat and dog living together) to the vet. I wish we could wear earplugs in the car, because there will be quite a lot of noise on the way… all 40+ minutes of it!

  2. I have that feeling (the vague uneasiness, as if my daily activities are being monitored and evaluated) about my cat every day, even though I’m never the one to take him to the vet. I live in constant fear of being ambushed when I walk past the bookshelves.
Maybe I just live in a constant state of paranoia.
Maybe that’s what the Gato wants…

  3. We got the same look from one of our cats when we put the reindeer antlers on him during the holidays. He would thrash to get them off, but never scratched. He would cry on the way to the vet though.
I like the leg warmers (I wouldn’t wear them cause that’d be odd for a guy to wear em).

  4. Oooh, I think I’ve known a cat like that…..scarey. My 20 pounder is declawed so he switched to teeth. He went for an injection and the needle flew across the room 3 times before the vet was successful and I still have scars.
    Love the legwarmers. Beautiful.

  5. I know Knitting Olympics completely overrules any self-imposed sock club but I’m for some reason dying to know what your pattern will be for February (or really March now…I guess you skip February…or will you do two in March?)
    P.S.- Sorry about that thing…

  6. My black cat has a “nervous shedding problem” everytime we visit the vet. I can no longer drop him off on my way to work unless I have a complete change of clothes and make arrangements to have the car detailed after it’s all over. Oh the trauma!

  7. Watch your bed. Cats have been known to express their displeasure in your bedding. Ask me how I know.

  8. Wow, that is one furious cat. My Riley just cowers and howls – it’s unnerving because he never makes a sound at home. They do own us, don’t they?

  9. That cat really looks ready to kill someone or something. Good thing you’ll be out of the house this weekend. Maybe the cat will have cooled off by then or gotten the mad out on something else but not your yarn stash.
Knitting Olympic sweater now in sewing up phase. Hope to wear it for you on Saturday. See you then, eh.
P.S. Legwarmers meh. For your sister to decide not me. Bet Tina loves the color.

  10. That is the face that says “I just might poop in your shoes before you go to the grocery.” I’d watch that cat!

  11. I’ve seen that look on my cats’ faces before. Ended up with a hairball on the pillow. Not so fun.
Also, I love the color of the legwarmers. What yarn are you using? I might have to go hunting for it.

  12. Hmm… my daughter wants legwarmers…
She’s also wanted a poncho for years now, and somehow I haven’t managed to pluck up the wherewithal to make her one. Legwarmers, maybe.
    Always remember: cats are feline.

  13. I wonder if kitchen rubber gloves would help when you try to hold a cat still? My dog clawed me to pieces through a loosely knit sweater after the vet clipped the nails on two of his feet. He’s a bitty thing, about 11 lbs, and tried to get away by climbing up my chest to “hide” on my shoulder. My neck and chest looked like I was made up for a horror movie. The sweater just kept pulling down and he kept climbing. I switched vets after I was told it was my own fault for “spoiling” my dog. I mean, what would you do if you weighed 11 lbs and some giant was hurting you? Duh.

  14. I also just got back from the vet with my kitty. When they brought her back to the exam room, after getting a blood sample, they gushed about how sweet she was. I think she’s just saving up her cat-rage for some middle-of-the-night revenge. I am frightened.

  15. Yup – that’s one pissed off cat. Bribery with food – always works with my two! Love the legwarmers – I might be a convert.

  16. That is one annoyed cat! lol Next time, I’ll officially join the Olympics. The leg warmers look really great – now I have to fight with myself, cables or lace – cables or lace hrmmm

  17. Dude. You started another sweater? I can’t decide if that makes you a Super Knitter Extraordinaire or a Sucker For Punishment. Sort of a fine line there….

  18. I got kicked out of the running on the Olympics by a kidney stone that decided it wanted to commune with me. For 8 days. 😛 Oh well. I had fun and learned some new stuff, which was pretty nifty. But the podium page is jsut for people who completed, right? (I mean, that makes sense to me…)
And legwarmers are really back, then? Those are much prettier than the 80’s neon pink ones, at least!

  19. I still have so much emotional scarring from the 80’s, it would take serious sucking up for me to knit those for anyone. Great pattern, but I don’t know, I’m craving bright colors!

  20. I don’t know a lot about computer stuff but it totally amazed me typing my email address and having the gold medal pop up beside my name. Very cool.
I like the leg warmers hope your sister does too.

  21. My cat scratches AND sheds like crazy. But, treats! Treats make everything better. Give her some tasty morsel and she’ll forget that there was ever an incident. At least, that’s how it works for us.
Those leg warmers are lovely. I can’t imagine your sister not wearing them.
Oh, and thanks to Mr. David, too! Heck, I was happy just to get my project done. Recognition is icing on the cake!

  22. I would definitely love those leg warmers if Erin doesn’t. 🙂 Leg warmers are perfect over jeans while dog walking or snow shovelling. Or most winter outdoor activities, I think. I do hope kitty forgives you soon. 🙂 And doesn’t retaliate!

  23. Maybe I am wierd, well I am but, it looks like your cat has lips….. real or photoshop???

  24. I love (and need!) those legwarmers. I will happily wear them in sister’s stead if she doesn’t approve. Although, if she’s built like you, they probably wouldn’t fit… Gorgeous color.

  25. Your cat looks dangerous. I’d watch it. I just knit my cousin some leg-warmers with the special thing around the foot like ballerinas wear. They were bright pink and very fabulous. So glad you are doing cabled ones. I was thinking my cousin needed another pair…

  26. She looks really pissed off. Maybe you should think of something nice to do to make it up to her before she hires someone to break your kneecaps.

  27. I really like those leg warmers! Very chic. If I were a leg warmer wearer I’d wear those.

  28. I suspect the next time you’re looking for some misplaced needles the Cat will be in the know!

  29. It might be a good idea to put your projects on lockdown, your cat has a dangerous gleam in her eye. A bribe of extra catnip may help heal her tender feelings. I feel for you, the last time I took my cat to the vet the lady attempting to draw her lab work got majorly scratched. I had to bring her back a few days later so she could be sedated! Cats don’t like vets, and will make their opinion known one way or the other. May the force be with you.

  30. Hopefully you won’t have to give her any pills.
Legwarmers are really nice; I want a pair for my elderly legs, but I won’t be doing all those cables!

  31. Wow, those eyes remind me why I have dogs…
Beautiful legwarmers but I couldn’t wear them–my cows would look like bison!

  32. I’m saving those legwarmers for future reference, since I might make some for my cousin for Christmas. (She’s super-trendy, and she said she loved the cropped cardigan I made her, but I don’t know if she’s worn it since I see her rarely.)
My KO sweater is almost done. I’ve just got to knit the collar (it’s kinda big), two button bands, and crochet button covers for buttons I haven’t yet purchased. Still, should be fun.

  33. Well THAT was satisfying!
(Also I need to stop thinking I’m the only knitter named Kim out there)

  34. I have seen that look before, and it doesn’t usually end well. My cat was fond of retaliation peeing in the laundry basket (always the clean clothes, of course).

  35. WOW – I wouldn’t let that cat sleep in the same house as me, if’n I were you. Leg warmers are neat looking!

  36. One PO’d cat…ours are the same when visiting the vet, one howls and sheds, the other howls and scratches. The dog is worse, she shakes the whole time and stays pointed towards the exit. My Olympic project (knitty.com Monkey socks) completed today, personal Closing Ceremonies were quite festive! Hooray for prizes!

  37. Wow! Those look even cooler in the yarn you’re using than in the pattern’s picture. Pray tell, what is it? I love the soft fuzz of it — makes the twisty little ribs so much more interesting.

  38. Hope the scratches aren’t interferring with the important stuff like knitting! I have dogs and having a 65 pounder give that same look puts real fear into a person!
Like the color on the legwarmers – pattern is great too!

  39. The cat is going to get you back for taking her picture and posting it…just saying

  40. Oooh, I’ve come face to face with that look many times, I would watch my back if I were you, at the very least your ankles…

  41. hey! What happened to spinning? I swore I wasn’t going to be sucked in, but I couldn’t read all the old entries and skip the spinning. I think it has been a couple months of spindle spinning and now I’m waiting for the wheel I ordered to arrive. Spin something bright and cheery please.

  42. “Speak now, or forever feel guilty when you look in your sock drawer and see the terminally unworn legwarmers that you really wanted in russet, even though you never spoke up!”
I still have a scar on my heel from de-ticking an uncooperative cat…

  43. The cat is basement cat – beware a plague will befall you .. rabid mice, or fungus in your claws … beware.
Meanwhile those leg warmers are hugely cute but make me feel old – god I remember the 80s.
    Off to weep
    x

  44. That is the difference between dogs and cats, speaking as someone who has had both over the years. Take a cat to the vet, watch your back and your knitting for weeks. Take a dog to the vet and it’s ‘please, please, rub my tummy and thank you for bringing me home, you are the most wonderful creature in the world.’ Cats understand cause and effect and dogs, well let’s just say they are not the brightest bulbs in the room. Needless to say that is why I have 3 dogs.

  45. I know that you normally travel by bike or by bus. And the visual of a cat carrier strapped onto your handlebars or the thought of it sitting under a bus seat? Hilarious and would certainly explain your cat’s moody behaviour. I would have scratched you too. 😉

  46. I know I should sympathize with your cat- but the level of hatred in it’s eyes is making me giggle uncontrollably.
Sorry cat. I feel the same way when I have to go to the dentist!

  47. I get to take 2 cats to be spayed and 1 to be neutered. I’ll be getting those blank, icy stares for months.

  48. Looking forward to your visit to Detroit. If you have time, visit the Detroit Institute of Art across the street from the Detroit library. The Art Institute has a fantastic collection of artwork, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rubens, Bruegel, Cezanne, Seurat, Matisse…just to name a few. It is one of the finest art museums in North America.
    See you Saturday!

  49. A bunny taken to the vet has just as much rage, but a shorter memory. Love the legwarmers! Very dancer chic!

  50. My husband says that your cat looks like Ptolomy who is the cat of the famous UK astronomer Patrick Moore.
There to days useless information curtsey of my husband.

  51. I will be in the same mess as you with the cat only twice as bad. Actually, it could be worse for me. Gizmo will be getting neutered along with his shots. Chloe will just be getting a check up.
Watch you back and sleep with one eye open. Good luck.

  52. Not that you dont’ already know this, but that is one PISSED OFF cat! wow! you can really see the emotion on her face. i have to face that next month. with 3 cats. i will wear sleeves.

  53. I’ve always said that I married my husband because if he could make a commitment to that insane cat of his (you know, the one who drew blood on every vet we ever took her to, the one who hissed, bit and scratched her way through all of our friends and relatives?), I figured I was golden. But when she died, I marched right down to the animal shelter and picked out two gorgeous and even-tempered orange cats. My husband says they have a personality that’s a cross between a potted plant and a stuffed animal but I think that’s just sour grapes right there.
I love that I won Knitting Olympic gold. It’s just embarrassing how much I love that little icon.

  54. ACK! I was out of town all weekend away from a computer (one can’t miss one’s mother’s 71st birthday after all), and I missed all of the signing up. Ah, well — I finished, and I swear I’ve hardly removed my sweater since I did, which is a pretty big reward in itself, eh? Thanks for the inspiration (and now I might need me one of those wrap cardis, too…)!

  55. Maybe it’s just my monitor, but the legwarmers look like a darker variation on the cat’s eyes. Except not livid!

  56. Who wouldn’t like those perfect leg warmers?
Kitty will get over it in about three weeks. I’d still watch out for a few days. Most kitties have some pretty strict rules about their “staff” which does not include a trip to the vet. Glad she’s okay!

  57. I hope you find a sweater I like as well———I too have been casting around for a cardigan. I have yarn—-now I need inspiration. Great legwarmers. Claudia

  58. Well not that you asked, but it I was starting a new sweater I’d knit Sigrun by Elsebeth Lavold. Not that you asked.
Your cat clearly hates you and please, for the love of all, please sing Flashdance songs to your sister when you give those legwarmers to her. And record that event for the web. That is all.

  59. My nephew (aged out of as cute as yours, though still a very nice young man) says all cats look as if they’re secretly plotting to kill you. I think in this case the secret is out. Wish I could come to Detroit…

  60. I find my cat much more compliant after I visit the vet. It shakes up the order of things and reminds her that I have that in my back pocket, if she doesn’t stop it with the hairballs already. It’s about all I have going for me.
I hope the scratches heal swiftly.

  61. I love how great cats are at looking pissed off… there’s no mistaking that look!

  62. Our cat LIKES going to the vet! He also likes his cat carrier. Very odd.
But unfortunately he also likes clawing us. My arms look like a highway map.

  63. If your sister doesn’t like the leg warmers I’d love to have them. They are my favorite color and I really like them.

  64. Tell us how you really feel, cat! Don’t hold back. Only third degree scratches? Judging by the look on the cat’s face, you’re lucky to be alive.

  65. I have no pictures of the cat at the vet. If I were to release her from the full Nelson long enough to take a picture, she’d be out in the parking lot trying to hot-wire the car.

  66. Keep an eye on you knitting projects while there is kitty rage in the house. They know what you like and how to destroy it. Talking from experience.

  67. ONe of my cats is the sweetest thing you ever saw, not very bright but snuggly and warm on cool evenings. Take him to the vet and his is PsychoCat, hissing and making the most god awful noises you ever heard.

  68. ‘Trip to yarn store replaced with trip to vet. Damn it. Why can’t cat’s drive?’
Because then they’d be getting into your stash, rather than waiting for you to bring it to them.
(It’s hard enough knitting with a cat in the area; they always find the moving yarn to be a wonderful target. Now imagine a cat that can grab it and hold on with its paws, or, worse, get at the yarn where it’s living ….)

  69. I’ve had to take my cats to the vet for several different things. I’m pretty sure they are plotting against me! Love the legwarmers! Super cute!

  70. I used to have a cat that looked much like yours. He was a sweetheart, and I miss him every time I think about him.
These days I have a brown tabby female who tries to kill every vet she meets. Someone mentioned their cat sheds a lot during vet visits – she does, too. My vet said it’s because when they’re stressed, tiny muscles under their skin quiver, and any hair that is even a little loose will go flying.

  71. Thank you to David and Franklin. Lovely leg warmers-so much more elaborate than the absolutely plain pink ones we wore in ballet class-long, long, ago! Cheers and red wine, Hazel.

  72. I think I have your cats’ long lost twin. My black cat has the same facial expressions as yours does. She also has a knack for lying in wait and then attacked as you walk by, for no apparent reason. I think she’s just reminding us who’s in charge.

  73. If you survive the wrath of cat, say whatever you want when you come to Michigan. I plan to be in Detroit, and since I missed you both times that you were in Ann Arbor (the 2 times that I knew of),if you repeat yourself, I won’t care. Besides, who’s counting (how many times you say the same thing)? and if they are, that’s just petty.

  74. That’s one pissed off looking cat.
I’m looking down at my thumb which still sports a scar from the great Flea Drop Battle of ’09.
    The leg warmers look luscious.

  75. That is one unhappy kitty! I would grow eyes in the back of my head if I were you.. Like the legwarmer pattern.. I might knit those sometime!

  76. Poor kitty…you should be mad at the vet, not at Mama. She’s just taking good care of you.
Cool legwarmers! (Is that an oxymoron? LOL)

  77. Oh yeah, that’s one pissed off cat. I’ve got 8 of them, I know of whence I speak. Be afraid, be very afraid.

  78. Watch your back. Cat’s do hold grudges. My vet is a friend and my cat hated her with a passion. If the vet came over, the cat would hiss at her and try to scratch her… charming. May be it’s cause my vet tatooed her 666… Love the leg warmers.

  79. Maybe check your shoes before you put them on…
Today, I used you in a speech. I’m taking a speech class to satisfy a college requirement, and I hate it. It fills me with terror. And we had to talk about culture, and show an artifact from our culture. So I talked about being a part of the culture of knitters, about sock knitters in particular. I told my class about Sock Summit (they didn’t believe me when I told them 30,000 knitters crashed your servers and they laughed when I told them that knitting is actually super exciting) and I wanted to tell you about it. Because you, you are one of the rock stars of my culture and I figured that if you could make a career out of talking about knitting, I could probably do a 4 minute talk about it and get a decent grade. Thanks for the inspiration.
Also, your name looks very nice when it’s all typed up in an MLA style citation. All academic and stuff.

  80. That is one annoyed and unhappy cat – keep stash under lock and key- mine eats lace. Also tries to kill the vet. Feeding him little nibbles of cheese helps, though I suspect he would prefer bits of the vet.

  81. I know about cats, vet visits, and scratches. I have yet to find out how to get a cat into the carrier without needing a transfusion afterwards.
Like the legwarmers. I think I will have to knit a pair before next winter. Right now I’m knitting with spring in mind.

  82. “Using an autumnal coloured yarn comes in handy for hiding the bloodstains from the scratches you have on your hands after the cat has been pointy that many times.”
Part of last night’s wittering on my blog lol
    Cats <3

  83. You know, there’s a trick with left-over sock yarn…cats CAN be bribed. OF course, the next pair of socks you try to make will be toast…

  84. If you haven’t thought of it yet, you should publish a book of the best comments from from your blog. I bet it would be a hoot!
    Ang

  85. I have a black cat that needs to go to the vet.NOT looking forward to it. It takes 3 people, at least 1 with padded gauntlet gloves (up to the elbow) to hold him down and tend to him whilst he screams the entire time and then they tell me he’s not their worst patient! The only good news in all of this is the other one isn’t going this trip so at least he won’t be pissed off with her because she smells like the vet (I’m wondering if he’ll take to hissing at himself due to the eau to vet aroma wafting about)

  86. Are the leg warmers part of your sock club? And if they are, is the February edition or March edition?

  87. Cats hold grudges. Just sayin’. Don’t let your guard down for weeks and weeks.
In my house, I’m outnumbered four to one!

  88. Please post soon to let us know you’re still alive…that cat looks like she is plotting evil. (I know, cats look like that all the time.) How dare you take her to the vet!

  89. Hmmm, I can’t get the e-mail address to David to work. Keeps getting rejected as an invalid address. Would be so sad to not see the medal by my name……can anyone help?
p.s. we had a cat once who could fight his way out of a wooden box when heading to the vet.

  90. I remember when you posted about your cat’s visit during your bath. Don’t let her do that for a while. Right now she’s making plans to drop a fully charged electric appliance in the water.

  91. beautiful cat. what’s its’ name? Cats do have memories, as opposed to dogs who have random access memory only, no hard drive.

  92. Is kitty talking to you yet? My female won’t come near me for a few days after a vet visit. My male thinks being petted is way more important than holding a grudge though. Sort of like humans!
I remember leg warmers (with stirrup pants) the first time they showed up. Don’t think I’ll be revisiting that look. Especially since my rear is wider than it used to be after two kids.
Casey is awesome though! I love that you can link to a Rav project and people don’t have to sign in to see it now!

  93. I think I’d rather have scratches and a paranoid feeling than what Mia used to do. Every time I tried to put her in the carrier…she’d pee on me. And we had to go the vet alot. She had chronic yeast infections in her ears, digestive problems (from cancer) and other problems. I got peed on quite a bit. I learned to wear my painting clothes to the vet.
I think those leg warmers are brilliant. If your sister doesn’t want them…:-)

  94. I know this is a dangerous thing to say, but isn’t your sister old enough to have worn legwarmers the first time around? Hasn’t she heard the rule? (If you wore it the first time, you’re too old to wear it the second? It’s a good rule to live by, ESPECIALLY in dealings with crap 80s fashion.)

  95. Love the legwarmers! I’m all about the cables. Reminds me of my high school days at Music & Art here in Manhattan.

  96. Oh no the 80’s are back! I lived through them the first time — I refuse to wear cargo pants again. That said, I like the legwarmers, good color for March and the pattern is really cool.
If I were you, I would go out and get apologies for the cat. Gourmet kittie treats, new scratching post and toys. Maybe it’ll lessen the payback. Not eliminate it, just lessen it. ‘Cause cats don’t forget or forgive. . .

  97. That’s one pissed kitty – such a funny photo and caption. Her ears say it all – “I’m gonna getcha”!

  98. One ticked-off cat . . . one half-completed leg warmer . . . Not a good combination. Not good at all. Watch out!

  99. You might want to lock your bedroom door tonight.
Also, I’ve been thinking about a pair of legwarmers for myself – I work outside a lot and some days it’s too warm for thermal underwear or my flannel-lined pants, but not cold enough for regular pants alone. Legwarmers have popped into my head as the perfect solution on more than one occasion!

  100. My son says that cat just has “the MOM look.” Nothing new. Liked leg warmers back when I used to exercise. Now just need them for skinny, cold legs. Maybe you’ve got a pattern for wool blend knee socks?

  101. Hi Stephanie, I was at your Ann Arbor talk, me and a couple hundred others. I don’t remember exactly what you talked about, but I really enjoyed it, which is why I’m coming back for more! I’d love to hear some Sock Summit Stories. Regards,Cheryl.

  102. Your cat does look vengeful. It helps our cat’s attitude after a vet visit to have a really special treat to give her, like tuna. And a sincere apology seems to help, too.

  103. That glare speaks volumes. “I will nom you in your sleep. For I am Kitty, feel my wrath.”

  104. Dear God-taking a cat to the Vet-you needed the legwarmers for your arms !!!! Glad the cat was OK(we have 2 rescued cats)but trying to crate them or just take them in the car is only done here by a crazy woman-me–and only once. Now, I try a telephone conference first and if blood isn’t pumping from an artery ……

  105. I always loved legwarmers and was sad when they went out of fashion. Now that they seem to be back, I think I am (more then) a bit old for them. I already do enough to embarrass my children.

  106. It may be me and my computer… but this post hasn’t shown up as the latest post when I go to your main url, www dot yarnharlot dot ca. I’ve been checking your site and seeing the March 4 post since, well, March 4. Of course, now I’m seriously wanting to make that sweater. I found this one through the archives. Wasn’t sure if there’s a problem on my end or yours, but I’ve also never seen so few comments to any post you’ve ever made. My cats have the same reaction to the vet, and I have scars to prove it.

  107. So I know the original post was a while back, but it so reminded me of the “how to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you” which circulated our office among cat folks, that I wanted to offer the link to you:
    http://www.catswhothrowupgrass.com/kill.php
P.S. I will be attending week one of sock camp .
