Randomly

I’ve got a deadline kicking my arse, so I’ll be random. It’s easier than stringing it together. This weekend I:

1. Drove to Springfield (Ontario, not Illinois) and taught for Wildflower Wool.  It was amazing, what a great group of students.

2. Drove home, walked in the door, put down my stuff, and Sam and I hopped on our bikes to go out, rode to the bottom of the driveway and:

Broken arm, or broken elbow, to be precise. (Sam wants you to know that the reason she looks rough is because it was, and also because I did her hair.) The rest of the weekend passed in a blur of the emergency room, fracture specialists, sock knitting,  x-rays, casts and passing things to Sam. (She’s right handed, and that’s her right arm It’s a serious bummer, but she’s being a trooper – or maybe that’s just the percocet talking.)

3. Let Luis play the ukulele.  He really likes it…

or, was that licks it?

It’s all the same to him.

4. Read all the comments on the previous post and felt grateful that you’re all so totally made of awesome. It must be all the yarn that does it to you.

5. Finished the knitting part on the little grey sweater.

It’s all done but for the rest of the embroidery.  I’ve done the sleeves, but those six motifs took hours, and there’s ten on the body. I hope the fetus it’s intended for isn’t in school before I finish.  It’s ridiculously fiddly – and yeah. I get the irony of that coming from a knitter.

6. Wondered what you were doing this weekend. Did you have a good time? What are you knitting?

  1. I found out I’m getting whatever a divorce is called when you’re permanently together but not married. It’s definitely not a “break-up.” Maybe a paperless divorce. Ha! I finished a Suki in an amazing Twirl Colors yarn, and I started a Shellseeker in yellow and green that is turning out just as I’d hoping. Apparently it is time to ring in spring with some bright colors!

  2. Oh NOOOOO!! Poor girl! That’s no way to start her spring. All the best to your family.

  3. Look! I’m first! I’m knitting two pairs of socks and working on a crocheted afghan. The knitting is winning; I don’t really enjoy crochet. Sooo sorry about Sam and hope she won’t be in much pain and that she will heal quickly! (Luis is so cute!)

  4. Poor Sam; at least it will heal!
Love the baby sweater that you’re making and bless you for all that embroidery. That’s one lucky little baby.

  5. Ouch!!! Hope Sam has a speedy recovery!!!!!!! But just think of the cast cozy that could be knit for her….
As for what is on my needles?? Too many things including several pattern creating attempts just for the fussing of the maths etc so that I can plug along and get things written up for these patterns and off to the test knitters… sigh …

  6. Yikes! Poor Sam! Give her my sympathies and tell her that the calcium in ice cream and the vitamin D from sunbathing (is it warm there yet?) are Absolutely Necessary, medically speaking. As for me, yes and a shawl in mink yarn. But I’m still cranky.

  7. Am I first?! Woohoo!
Sorry to hear about the broken elbow- that’s a rough break (no pun intended). I had a friend visiting me in Philly and she broke her elbow falling off a bike the first day in town! After her surgery, we spent the rest of her vacation struggling with her new infirmity and getting closer as friends (assisted bathing will do that to a friendship!).
I’m knitting a baby blanket- it’s going well but I’m completely bored with the project. At least I chose nice colors. Only 6.5 more squares to go and then I’ll sew them all together and get this thing finished!
The grey sweater is amazing. What a lucky baby!

  8. 1. Did my first 90 minute run of the season. Which is good because the first half-marathon of the season is at the end of May. Serious road time is needed.
    2. Took my mother-in-law to the airport. Love her dearly, but glad to have the house to ourselves.
    3. Am knitting Koleine – lovely sweater, lovely yarn, stupid brain. Have unknit and reknit 3 times now because I appear to be challenged by counting. And reading the pattern.

  9. Best wishes for a quick recovery, Sam. My daughter did the same thing last year while I was in Paris. It’s hard on the mamas when their babies are hurt, regardless of their age.

  10. I usually lurk rather than comment, but wanted to wish Sam a speedy recovery. Poor her, sending a healing hug from across the Pond.

  11. Actually just finished a pair of socks from the pattern you did for the rockin’ sock club! The arrow ones. Hoping for Sam’s speedy recovery.

  12. Wishing Sam a speedy recovery. I’m working on my first sweater — now knitting the first sleeve. Have finished body to underarms — lots of cables. I’m no doubt in over my head but what the heck if experienced and fantastic knitters (yes, you) can admit to being befuddled at times then I guess I can just go for it and raglan be darned!
Thanks for nurturing the wonderful knitting community here and elsewhere.

  13. I spent the weekend with you! Well, actually I was finishing a pair of Cloisonne mittens. Turns out I had knit the first mitten on a US 6 and the second one on US 4. For the life of me I couldn’t tell the difference until I knit the thumb onto the 6 mitten with the 4 needle and it looked totally different. Tinked it, looked at my notes, did it with the right needles and am now back to not being able to tell the difference between the two mittens. I think it must be my hands.

  14. Second to post! Thought I was the first for once 🙂
To begin my weekend I did battle with a university account that I remembered a half hour later that I had changed the password and forgot to write it down (this was to register for classes) Then later that evening I got an email saying that I was accepted to another college.
In my knitting world I am working on a ten stich blanket (it’s on Raverly)and have a pair of socks where one is finished and the other is on the needles, not having being touched since march break.

  15. Started and finished a BSJ; went to Yarncon and heard the entertaining story of Juniper Moon Farm and totally broke my yarn diet to buy some incredible small-farm scarlet and natural brown from the Michigan Yarn Company (blog-free but there is a farm website). Hope I can squeeze out a Stilwell.

  16. Distance huggage for Sam! Having watched this determined Lady grow up via the blog, I know she is fierce, strong, and always a winner. Hoping for a safe recovery.
This weekend I went to 3 meetings, worked on my homework, and ripped out the same sock multiple times while I flagged phone calls from everyone who chose the minute I picked up the needles to call.
I’ve decided that while I love my family, if they can’t handle speaker phone, then they need to just let me knit this week. 😉
Had a cup of Vanilla Caramel tea this morning in protest to eternal Mondayitis.
That’s about it. Have to go cast on these socks, again. 😉

  17. Poor Sam…feel better soon! I decided that the large blanket comprised of beautiful fall colors that I’m halfway through as a wedding gift just wasn’t cutting now that its April. I spent 2 weeks uninterested in knitting, so I knew something was up. So, since the date for the wedding hasn’t been set and I’m not under the gun, I started a lovely spring sweater and can’t wait to knit again. So knitting, combined with a killer but awsome spin class, some work, and some time with hubby, made for a lovely weekend.

  18. Sam, so sorry. Take it easy for a few days and enjoy being waited on. You will learn to use it in amazingly inventive ways.
On my many sets of needles, socks- multiple pairs, my neice’s vest- needs to be blocked, put together, and Icord added, random baby sweaters etc.

  19. Poor Sam. What a horrible way to start the Spring. I hope the bones start KNITTING together quickly and there are no complications. More hugs from over the pond.
    I love the baby sweater.

  20. I think you need a ceremony to dispel the evil spirits that are haunting you right now. How about burning some sage leaves and shaking some feathers and beads around? If it works, let me know the recipe. There’s some evil karma floating around in my vicinity right now too.

  21. Will you knit a Cozy for Sam’s cast? Because that would be Awesome!!!! The sweater looks great, and the Little Luis is so darn cute I could eat him.

  22. YEEOUCH! Wipe-out or hit-by-car? Get well wishes from Oregon!
I had an unexpected and totally delightful weekend at home ALONE!!! Learned how to wire-wrap, plyed some Gotland singles, finished a hat, skirted a fleece.

  23. Poor Sam! I hope her break heals quickly…
This weekend was mostly spent destashing and getting together my WIP’s… I’m working on giftmas knitting….. and my son picked out the color for his Yule gift (a sweater http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/saranac )….. he picked black, at least it now makes sense for me to be working on a sweater over the summer months when I can sit outside in the bright sunlight to knit it… and he wears a men’s XL…

  24. Poor Sam! I hope she heals quickly.
I am confident that the accident was not immediately preceded by the words, “Hold my beer. Watch this!”

  25. After three months of “bad thumb mojo” I got the use of my hands back for knitting. I had a crazy “must knit all the things” fit. Not very productive but my inner knitting soul is quite happy.

  26. Aw, poor Sam! That makes me being laid off not seem so bad. Actually, the lay-off is a good thing. It means I’m free of a very bad situation.

  27. Afterlight (although I am getting it wrong). Junes favourite, and one more Big cuddly pig (Purl Soho). Calligraphy, too. But really, I am dreaming of Acer and Lucinda at the moment. Why are there so many awesome patterns and why are seasons always changing so fast? Keep steady and knitting and I hope a fast recovery for the broken arm. (What a nightmare, you couldn´t even knit…)

  28. Poor Sam. I’m sure one of her ambitions at the begining of the month was to become ambidextrous.
    Hope she does well.

  29. Lots of hugs to Sam, what a horrible thing to be trapped in now that the weather is finally getting nice 🙁
I have a shawl, a scarf and a pair of fingerless gloves on the needles, all sitting there teasing me because this weekend I finally accepted the fact that I’m having carpal tunnel problems and I have to give knitting a rest for a while. It’s been all of one day and I’m climbing the walls…. I did manage to finish your Old Joe socks, except for the grafting and finishing and I think I can manage that. Bad timing because I’m signed up for three classes at Stitches South this weekend…..

  30. 1. Feel better Sam, a broken elbow sounds like no fun at all. 2. I am in the home stretch of Boreal, too bad I will have to wait until next winter to wear it.

  31. First thing – the Birks are out, and around my yard, so are my toes. I have a teddy bear, a sock. two washcloths, a scarf, oops, make that two teddy bears, and maybe two scarves too…. Let’s just say LOTS, with the pattern coming for a cotton sweater (thanks Wendy) that I am anxious to start. It’s a bright aqua, and I’m hoping it will prod Spring along her way. So so sorry to hear about Sam’s arm. Give her a (gentle) hug from all of us.

  32. Just thought, that white cast needs a fantastic yarn cozy. Don’t you think??!!!

  33. Speedy recovery to Sam! This weekend I spent bunches of time playing with my awesome 8-month old, who discovered not only that he can say Ga! Ga!, but that his tongue sticks out if he wants it to. He’ll be crawling any day now so I’m also enjoying being able to leave him in one place and he more or less stays there. And finally I avoided looking at the bag of yarn in the linen cupboard that was supposed to be a blanket for said 8-month old… Good times. = )

  34. 2 adults with 24 hour stomach bug, twin toddlers and snowing…I think Sam might have had the same bad cosmic energy we had! Heal fast and feel better soon!
Knitting an enormous cowl and dreaming of spring.:)

  35. Dear Sam….Get Better Quickly!!! This is really crummy, getting hurt. Flip flop season is coming soon…and it will make getting ready to go out easier…
In the meantime be gentle on your Mum, she IS your new right ARM for now! 🙂

  36. I just finished a red Lorne’s Hat.
I love the post about Joe’s friend and how he loves the hat.
I am going to make a number of them for Christmas gifts 2013.
Starting another sweater i hope not in a line of Things That Don’t Fit Right
    Sylvia

  37. Oh Poor Sam….best wishes for a speedy recovery and the idea of a cast cozy is wonderful! My weekend? Knitting my first ever lace anything – Commelina scarf in sparkly white mohair blend. Although “knitting” may be the wrong word…how about pulling out over and over and RE-knitting. I finally got the ends done after 5 or 6 tries and am now 5 rows into the actual scarf – also after 5 or 6 tries…..and as I’m sure you know, mohair is no fun to frog!!! Did you take Sam out for ice cream? Any injury feels better with Ice Cream 🙂

  38. Poor kid and poor Mom. My son Kevin has repeatedly broken his arm (right and left elbows 18 months apart and then a mid-forearm and wrist fracture matched set) and breaking bones in the dominant arm really sucks for everyone involved. Elbows are particularly difficult to treat. Good luck to her and everyone around her. Hang tough, Stephanie.

  39. Quick healing Sam. Definitely yarn bomb her cast 🙂
I am working on ‘Purdue socks’ for my sons birthday. Last year I did his undergraduate school colors, and this year, grad school. I’m sure he’ll love them (and a gentle reminder to get his student loans paid off)…..always a mom?

  40. Somehow Sam manages to look pretty even with a hospital robe on. I’m thinking happy healthy thoughts for her.

  41. Knit up quickly, Sam, and so sorry about that!
Got the first call at 7 am: the labor of love has commenced. (And I’d better get cracking on knitting that grandson a sweater–it’ll have to be a fast one, he wasn’t due for 11 more days.)

  42. I found the rest of the yarn for a sweater I’m knitting! So I wound up a ball and knitted at a minor league baseball game.

  43. I can still do lots of things ambidextrously thanks to the 6 weeks my dominant arm spent in a cast! That’s the upside. It definitely rewired my brain a bit, for the better, I think. Embrace the left-handed writing and everything else.
And if she wants to chop stuff up in the kitchen, embed a nail point-up in a cutting board and impale the fruit/veg on that, then chop away.

  44. you do know that you can do chain stitch with a crochet hook, right? you just basically slip-stitch on top of the knitting. takes WAY less time.

  45. I had an amazingly good time this weekend, a small part of it was coming to the toe end of the second of 2 “weekend socks” by Glenna C. Deep red ones for me. They’ve been hanging around for about 6 months, or more.

  46. Well wishes to Sam. Glad you finally posted, as I was beginning to have YHW.No, it’s not Yahweh, it’s Yarn Harlot Withdrawl!
OTN, the second of a pair of socks in, you guessed it, stripes of brown, dark brown, tan, beige, light cream and whitish. Hubby calls them clown socks, but they aren’t my usual bright colors. Just cast on this morning.

  47. Oh dear typing error – That arm and hand – That happens when one types in semi-darkness because one is too lazy to switch on the light.

  48. I love how the embroidery gives a little extra oomph to the sweater – looks so cute with the flowers.

  49. I did my elbow in the same way, low-speed fall off the bike. also my dominant hand, too. Be strong, Sam, eating gets easier, although your shoelaces will continue to be confounding. Be patient with the people who will want to carry your stuff and cut your food, they’re trying to help, not make you feel incompetent. Mend well!

  50. Sorry about Sam and her arm. I was there once with my son. He broke his arm while he was racing down some stairs to watch one of his favourite cartoons. Did an overnighter at the hospital – not fun for anyone.
Working on some socks. Shooting to complete the socks I currently have on my needles and then one other pair before I leave for my Knit Traders Scotland Knitting trip.

  51. Oh, Sam, I am so very sorry — not a nice way to start spring. Well, so silly, it’s not a good way to start anything.
From similar experience (right shoulder and right handed, but decades older), it helps when it’s warm weather and you don’t have to wear heavy clothing and coats.
I’m working on a sweater back, a fingerless mitt and a sock. Just finished mailing a niece a package of dish/wash cloths. She loves them!!
Heal, heal, heal. And thank you, Stephanie, for the blog. Good thoughts for all of you.

  52. Poor Sam! That stinks. Hope she is feeling better soon. I assume an elbow isn’t a quick thing to heal, especially when you talk about “fracture specialists” but wishing her a quick recovery. And you too since I am sure you will be her right arm for the foreseeable future.

  53. I spent the weekend preparing and throwing a yoda themed birthday party for my almost five year old son, and wondering how he got to be five so quickly. Talk about warping the space time continuum.
Knitting was all about a yoda doll for him. One arm and a face to go. I have eight days until his actual birthday, but….
I have nine days until my due date with baby number three (there is a two year old in between there), so I am impatiently waiting for him to show up. This is the worst part for me, as I am A PLANNER and nobody laughs at someone who wants to make plans like an unborn baby.
So sorry about sam’s elbow. I hope it heals very quickly.

  54. Poor Sam! At least she knows where to find a knitting needle if that cast starts itching. I found the perfect cotton/wool yarn at YarnCon to make Veronik Avery’s Tuck Pullover in summery yarn. Continued working on Color Affection, apparently the most popular yarn booth sample shawl. Saw at least ten versions of CA at YarnCon.

  55. Oh great googly moogly. Hope Sam makes it alright. 🙁
As for me, I was gardening, busily watering and weeding, enjoying my tomatoes getting plump and ripening slowly in the sun. Oh, and I’ve been knitting BrooklynTweed’s Guilder scarf, which is growing as slowly as the tomatoes are ripening.

  56. Sending Sam healing thoughts & you kick arse progress on your deadline!
Last week I couldn’t believe your daffodils had bloomed before mine. I thought you were much further north but when I checked on MapQuest even though you are 1127+ km (700+ miles)away you are just 322km (200mi)north. Mine bloomed yesterday and are lovely. Spent the weekend swatching & knitting…6th grandchild is due anytime.

  57. Sorry to hear about Sam’s elbow. Been there, done that, but my left elbow (and yes, I am left-handed). Do everything the doctors tell you, do all of the physical therapy they tell you to do. You have a ride coming up in July!

  58. I was cleaning and organizing because we are hopefully putting our house on the market in 2 weeks. Definitely not fun. Though I did a bit of knitting and started cooking my way through 20+ pounds of flour, 7+ pounds of brown sugar and 4 pounds of quinoa. I know what I’m making for months.

  59. My deepest sympathy to Sam. I broke the pinky finger on my right hand once. The inability to take care of myself was worse (sometimes) than the actual pain of the break. Be careful of the percoset, friends. When I took it, it gave me horrendous nightmares.
What’s on my needles is a child’s sweater, knit in one piece from bottom up. I’m five rows away from the neck and I looked down and realized I had crossed one of the sleeve decreases the wrong way. I’ll just drop the stitch and fix it, I said to myself. Right, I’ve spent the last two weeks trying to fix it. My husband commends me for my patience, but does point out that I’m having no reward for that since the thing isn’t fixed yet.
I’ve been knitting for 50 years. Ticked off does not begin to describe what I’m feeling.

  60. At least Sam’s nails look amazing!! Is that manicure pre- or post-injury?
I’m working on Wingspan with some very exciting Zauerball. Just finished Gilet Noued-Noued. So Cute!

  61. I worked a lot on my first mobius shawl. By the fifth time I cast on, and did a few rows I “got it”. Stitch markers between the pattern repeats really helped. Whatever made me think I could work without them?
    Hope Sam feels better soon.

  62. Luis is so cute! And at that age, he likes and licks everything.
I hope Sam is doing well. I don’t know what I’d do without use of my primary writing/knitting/everything appendage. I think I’d be on the percocet a lot, just to keep me sane.
Knitting? I’ve been knitting…finished a pair of socks for Little Man and I’ve been working on my Freepotr Vest and Monkey Socks (mostly). Also, the designing bug has hit me again. ::sigh::

  63. Poor, poor Sam! I feel so bad for her, and just when it’s starting to warm up! I spent the weekend planting my borders outside while my 15 month old son ran around naked fighting off diaper rash. Finished a bunting/hat set for a friend and still working on three(yes three, don’t ask) baby blankets for my new baby while staring longingly at some lovely cotton for baby booties….

  64. Ouch! Hugs to Sam and a quick recovery.
Current project is Romi’s mystery shawl (one more clue to go!). Just found out that a coworker is expecting triplet girls. So baby sweaters will be in the queueueueueueueue.

  65. Hugs to Sam, and to YOU, too. I’m so glad to see another post after the last one. Life does go on, with all it’s ups and downs. Over the past weekend I got a lot of knitting done on my Chuncho socks (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/nbgriz/chuncho)
and I received some prize yarn from a KAL that was suspicious of moth damage. If it weren’t for my Ravelry addiction, I might not have examined it so closely (preparing to photograph for my Rav stash). Thanks to what I learned from your blog, I knew what to do.
We’re also well underway planting our Oregon garden, and optimistic for a good year.

  66. Ohhhhh, as a person who has broken elbows 2X, I sympathize. Here in the US, I don’t think we use casts anymore for elbows, just slings to keep the arm from freezing. I’ve had both – cast and sling and the rehab was easier coming out of a sling. Percocet = GOOD! Also, lots of chocolate pudding. Wishing you all well.

  67. Poor Sam! I am between the gusset and toe of a second Old Joe Sock. I am in love with this pattern…thankyouverymuch!!!

  68. I hope Sam recovers quickly.
P.S. If any knitting needles go missing, they may be found once the cast is removed (broken arms/elbows tend to get really itchy while they are healing, and Note to Sam: Your mom has plenty of nice scratching implements handy *wink*).

  69. Oh, I’m so sorry Sam had an accident. My son slipped on some ice a few Decembers ago and broke his elbow. It’s not fun. An ordinary day can turn into something not ordinary so fast. Get well soon, Sam.

  70. Poor Sammy! But that little sweater is just SO lovely! Are you happy with the embroidery? Would you do another project with embroidery?

  71. Oh, no! So sorry for Sam! Sending her tons of healing thoughts…
I love that little baby sweater – and your embroidery!
And who wouldn’t love Luis pictures…

  72. Oh Sam, I’m so sorry! I hope you will feel better soon. Sending you healing hugs. Take care, sweetie!

  73. Poor Sam! That’s really painful. My daughter broke her elbow too when she tried to refuse being thrown from a horse. They didn’t cast her after her operation, but put her in a jointed sling-thingy (that’s a technical term!) and the rehabilitation began pretty much right away. I hope Sam makes the same speedy recovery my Sabrina did.

  74. Sending speedy recovery thoughts to Sam, and her mum. As someone that had a cast on their primary use wrist for a while, I can say that the easiest way to brush my teeth was to hold the brush in my ‘wrong’ but unhindered hand and move my head. Really, my head was much more agile than the unschooled limb. (This is either useful info, or will make her laugh. It’s all good.)

  75. Very sorry about Sam’s broken elbow!
I packed about 25 to 30 bags of paper and junk for recycling and garbage from my backrooom. Sigh.
I have been knitting the Rosebud shawl from Tincan Knits. Love it!

  76. So sorry to Sam! Hope the healing goes quickly.
I suggest you find a friend who loves embroidery to finish the sweater for you. That way you can move on to finding nice buttons and starting a new project!
I have started my Spring by frogging some never to be finished WIP’s, casting on the Holden shawlette, and spinning some merino/silk. Of course Spring hasn’t started up here in Alaska – we’re supposed to get 12 inches of snow between today and tomorrow!

  77. Oh poor Sam!!! tell her to watch all the movies and not try to do too much. I hope the painkillers are helping her out!

  78. Sending healing thoughts to Sam from NJ, USA – I hope she heals up in time to enjoy the summer!
This weekend I knitted my first sock! And built a grill! It was a weekend of firsts.

  79. My mom shattered her elbow in her attempt to do a backward flip down the sub-basement cement stairs. Considering her age–72–I think that she got about a 9.5. It was very painful. Thankfully her next door neighbor heard her call out and since he is a radiologist, took her to his hospital (all the while my father was in Africa, none the wiser).
I continued on socks for DH–black, 2.0 dpns AND started on Tinder by brooklyntweed for the Afghans for Afghans campaign for 500 sweaters for girls going to school in Afghanistan.

  80. Sending get well soon wishes to Sam. Hope it doesn’t hurt too much once the percocet runs out.
Since this was the first weekend this year that it got into the 50-60’s I worked in the garden cleaning up, pruning and mulching. Then spent the evening working on a cotton sweater for Mother’s Day for my mom.

  81. Get better soon Sam! I couldn’t imagine having my right arm out of commission… I would be way whinier than she seems to be! Poor girl.
I am knitting a monster for my friend who’s 30th bday was last friday. I thought it seemed appropriate. 🙂

  82. Broken bones – terrible. Hopefully the mending will go quickly. Guess she won’t be knitting anything for awhile.
I have the “Diatom Shawl” on my needles. Got the Knit Picks kit as a gift years ago and broke it out of the stash in a knitting emergency last weekend when I was trying to exit the house to go to my daughter’s soccer game and I had unexpectedly finished the i-cord edging on my “Wingspan” shawl right before the game. Weekend knitting was great – I made it through the rough patch and associated tinking of lace and re-knitting earlier in the week when I – like many before me apparently – failed to read row 59 of the pattern correctly. I should really learn to read the comments on Ravelry BEFORE I am pulling out my hair after a horrid lace error. Maybe someday.

  83. Hope Sam mends quickly. Breaks are no fun.
Recently finished a knitting marathon for the baby shower of my best friend’s daughter, who is due in June. Made sweaters in 6-9, 12 mos, and 19 months, as it is supposed to be a summer baby. Now the mom is in the hospital with pre-eclampsia and I’m casting on an emergency light fingering weight BSJ with matching bonnet- just in case.

  84. Oh my gosh! I hope Sam feels better very soon! (hugs)
I was rear-ended by an SUV Friday afternoon and spent the night in the hospital. My car is totaled and I am sore and angry. That’s what I did with my weekend!

  85. Oh goodness. Her right arm and she’s a righty. My oldest did that – broke his right upper arm. She’s likely to need a personal slave for a few weeks. I hope it heals well, and that they get her out of the cast as soon as medically possible, because she’ll “get her arm back” a lot sooner then. Clenching her fist often, as long as it’s not painful, will be useful. Really.
    Good luck, Sam!!

  86. I went to YarnCon in Chicago (indie fest) and saw Jurassic Park again. Wool and Dinosaurs!! I was good, I spent only $20 more than budgeted, which isn’t too bad.
    Hope Sam is healing okay!

  87. I hope Sam’s bones mend quickly.
Spent the weekend getting over my third cold this year. Plied my first three ply yarn, worked on my first Bohus sweater and Cocokmits Gretel when I needed something easier.

  88. Not exactly OTN since after knitting and ripping the same short-row heel (my first) three times, I decided although the correctly knit heels were perfect, the socks were really ugly and frogged them altogether. Blocking the toddler sweater I just finished. Still one pair of JECK socks OTN. Deciding what knitting to take on 12-day vacation.
Hugs and healing vibes to Sam; that sounds Ouch! Good thoughts to Steph; it hurts to see your baby hurting.

  89. I’ve gone to the Dark Side of the knitting moon 🙂 Bought a vintage Studio knitting machine. I know it’s not the same but 500 rows of stockingette in a couple of hours? It’s like a drug..

  90. Oooooh, I so need to share this with my 21 yo son to prove that parental participation in sporting events that lead to a mishap is NOT an age-related thing (tell Sam I won’t actually…but I should!). Do what the doctor says, get plenty of healthy foods (which shouldn’t be an issue in your household), and she will be right as rain soon (and she has an out for chores like laundry and major cleaning of her room, too!).
I went to an alpaca shearing Saturday morning, then drove another 100 miles to watch what turned out to be my son’s 16-inning baseball game (that ended in a tie), and had dinner with his bff from high school and his family on Saturday. On Sunday, we drove 200 miles to watch him play in a double-header (well, technically, he only pitched in 6 innings of the 2nd game…). And then we drove home. I did get some knitting done on a afghan in the car and at the games on Sunday. And some alpaca fiber and yarn did manage to follow me home…
Healing wishes to Sam and to all the other posters who had accidents and illnesses this past weekend.

  91. Daughter broke her hip playing basketball so started and finished one pair of purple socks and started a wingspan over the weekend. Am seriously thinking that we should start a movement to yarn bomb all medical waiting rooms – anybody care to join me???
    PS Heal quickly Sam!

  92. Poor Sam. Hope it heals quickly!
Right now I am working on a super secret project! And spinning. Like a mad woman. I spent the weekend visiting a friend and her horses. All in all, lots of sunshine and good conversation, a good weekend all around.

  93. Oh, that poor thing! Hope you heal easily and more quickly than what the doctors tell you, Sam.
As for me? I was busy continuing my sorting and packing for my move to the great US Southwest in a few months. This weekend, I dove into my knitting studio. Two hours later I realized it was going to take a few days longer than the “I’ll knock this out in 8 hours” I gave myself.
The biggest obstacle? My OCD urges demanding that I “organize projects and yarns properly!” So I’ve been sorting, photographing, taking notes, and packing.
    Thank goodness for Ravelry.

  94. My sincerest sympathy to Sam. Been there, done that, learned not to (try to) jump over baby gates to get to the phone more quickly. Encourage her to do whatever the nice physical therapist says, when she gets to that part — I now have full range of motion back, despite feeling stuck at 90° when the brace first came off. Hopefully her young bones will mend better and more quickly than my then 33-yr-old bones did (though I’m not really complaining, thanks to the p.t.). Best wishes to her!
(And Luis is darling, but you know that already ~grin~)

  95. Sending recovery wishes to Sam. I know how she feels. Really I do. I made a one pont landing on my left elbow and shattered it. (and I am not a righty)I was 25 at the time. Not only was the break painful, my ego hurt every time I had to have help dressing.

  96. With all of us sending good thoughts, that should help Sam heal sooner. We all hope her bones knit well.
I just finished my first pair of Cookie A socks (Wedge) and I am stoked. Now onto Lavold’s cul de sac vest.

  97. I am so sorry for Sam….I hope she doesn’t need surgery… but this will put a major kink in her life…temporarily .
What did I do? I went to the Gym and went Spinning, then I went to my friends and borrowed an extra wheel and am learning how to Spin. I worked on a prayer shawl in bulky, a Susana IC shawl in lace weight, went to Yarn Con in Chicago and took a Tunesian Crochet class at Loopy Yarns. And had family for dinner. A great weekend all around. My husband is a tax preparer for a small accounting firm, so he worked all weekend…

  98. Speedy recovery wishes to Sam and her caregivers (that will be for the stormy, bad moods – ask me how I know?). Remember Sam, ‘this time shall pass’.
Decided the laceweight Hitchhiker wasn’t worth the bother – what was I thinking of? but then, it would be a good project for knitting group.
Moving house, moving junk and packing. Only cerebral knitting done.

  99. Poor Sam – hope she makes a swift recovery. I’ve been knitting some plain socks. In a yarn I’ve not used before and probably won’t use again. Looks nicer in the ball than knitted up. The next pair are going to be in some of my ‘nice’ yarn – which means not being lazy, getting the swift and ball winder out and making a ball from a skein rather than grabbing another ball of something bought in a ball.

  100. Watch out for that percocet. It can turn ugly fast. Last year over five days I slept for only 5 hours and screamed at my poor mother who flew to Florida to help me out after surgery. Apparently if you are not a regular drug taker the effects can be mean. I wish you both luck and health.

  101. Spent the weekend at the first dance competition of the season. Thanks for asking.
My son broke his right thumb last year and had to have a scribe for exams; math was the worst. Hope things go smoothly for Sam. Does she have a colourful fibreglass cast to look forward to? What colour will she choose? Our fracture clinic had all kinds of creative casts and examples to keep everybody distracted; it can be an real art form if you’re so inclined…which I imagine she is, with her genes and all.
    Gotta love the Percocet. 😉

  102. Oh poor Sam! Give her a very gentle hug from me please! And I agree with an earlier comment – a cast cosy would be a great idea 😉

  103. I’m sending good healing energy to Sam! I hope her healing goes quickly and completely.
I’m knitting a narrower version of Lily Chin’s reversible cabled shawl. It’s going to be stunning, but 2×2 ribbing in gray laceweight is making me a little punchy. I’m also working on a pair of self-striping socks, just to take the edge off.

  104. Poor Sam!! That looks very painful and super-inconvenient.
This was a bad knitting weekend for me. I have been trying to knit a summer sweater out of a yak-bamboo blend. It’s not a tough pattern but it finally whipped me and I ripped out the entire thing. I had cast it on SEVEN times (long story) and had a heck of a time with the lace panel. I remained calm the entire time and didn’t swear at all. Not like me.
So, I’ve been working on my riding-in-the-car seed stitch sweater. I also gave myself a consolation gift of yarn to make my husband a sweater. Don’t know the name but it was in the recent Vogue issue with the red aran sweater on the cover — it has 3 main colors with a small fair isle stripe in between. Figure it might be a good chance to try out fair isle — I’m sure that will involve swearing.

  105. I’m joining all the other knitters in wishing Sam a speedy recovery, and that her bones knit themselves back together perfectly.
Your little gray sweater is lovely!

  106. Poor Sam!! So very sorry sweetie!! I hope you heal fast! What an adorable sweater! Wow, the detail is beautiful. I am making the Honey Cowl using Tosh DK in Grapefruit. I am not an “orange” person but this color just spoke to me in the shop!! I had to have it! I love it! I will cast on for MadMay on May 1, can’t wait! I am finishing a couple hats I have been working on, very simple man hats, The Dave Beanie on Ravelry. It’s a great man hat, especially for larger man heads!! Using Mal Rios for those. I love the colorway in Plomo, it’s by far my favorite!

  107. So sorry about your daughter’s arm! My son broke his on his bike last Spring, and walked a mile home dragging his bike!
Love the sweater. What’s the pattern again? Must be made for someone special.
I started my first Shetland shawl. On the fourth row of the border, the stitches aren’t adding up. Must get off the exercise bike and count ’em!

  108. Oh, poor Sam! The thought of a broken elbow makes me feel rather queasy. I hope she has a speedy recovery, and that the bones knit back together properly.
How are you doing? I still have nightmares featuring my son’s wrist that was trying to imitate an accordion after a roller blading accident.

  109. Thank god for knitting in emergency. I’ve done my share lately with an ill husband. You’ll be doing a bit of bum whipping my dear. Godspeed.

  110. I’ve been somewhat knitting an EZ rib warmer. My first time with the project so it’s ‘by the books’ but I’m overflowing with things I’ll change next time. Mostly I’m taking care of sick littles – one with the flu and one with a hacky cough and me with a fever headache. I can’t wait for the weekend to be over (it’s not til they go back to school – tomorrow, I hope).
Sorry to hear that it’s Sam’s dominant she’s broked. I’m *highly* right-dominant so the very idea of breaking my right arm is shudder-worthy. It’ll be good for her, long-term, to have to force the left-handedness for a while. You could knit her some attractive knitty stuff to cover that unattractive cast, though. Or, y’know, puffy paint. 🙂

  111. I work on the weekends, so most of my weekend knitting is just in my head, but I did finish the interminable picot bind-off on my Holden Shawlette and blocked it. This is the second project I’ve completed while I’m contemplating the Color Affection that is simply not cooperating with me – have decided it’s because the yarn is too narrow or the needle too big. So, beginning again, pretty soon… Kind of concerned that it will turn out to be Barbie-sized.
And spellcheck doesn’t think shawlette is a word. Ha!

  112. I’ve already started laughing about the un-quiet part of my weekend. The quiet part was finishing Leftie shawl, doing suduko, and enjoying Netflix.
The un-quiet part was going to dinner with mother, her 2nd husband, sister, and brother-in-law. The last 3 insisted on talking about one of 2nd husband’s relatives who has IBS and major digestive/lower GI issues throughout dinner. Wasn’t funny at the time, but now it all seems like an old Woody Allen movie.
Sending warm, healing thoughts to Sam. I broke 13 bones at once a long time ago and know she is going to need some Major TLC for a while. Hope someday Sam can smile or find something good about her adventure.
I like that bones knit, as do people, although a broken elbow might postphone the latter for a while.

  113. Hang in there Sam. In six weeks that darn cast will be off and you’ll be able to enjoy Summer.
I had lots of company this weekend, but managed to squeeze in a knit hairband and half a pair of socks. Also put a reserve on a condo.

  114. Having in my lifetime broken both elbows, both wrists, one toe, one finger, and one ankle (all on separate occasions — I’m a real klutz), I can honestly say that the elbows were the worst. The first one was a direct landing on the point of the elbow when I was in college. The two most difficult parts (once the first few days of pain were over) were carrying things and hooking the garters on my stockings (pre-panty hose era). The cast came off in 4 weeks, but it was over 6 months before I had complete range of motion again. The second elbow got broken when I fell ice skating (see, Stephanie, it really is dangerous) and landed on my hands, the force of the fall broke the elbow. That time I had a 13 month old and the most difficult part had to do with taking care of him (diapering one handed is a real accomplishment). Hopefully Sam (who doesn’t have to carry trays in the cafeteria, hook up garters, or diaper babies will have a simpler recuperation. Let her milk this one for all it’s worth because it’s a real bummer to be both in pain and disabled and elbow pain for some reason is particularly excruciating. I hope someone is putting ice on her arm for the next 24 hours. With the elbow in the cast I really needed that along with the pain killers. I know she’s a tough cookie, but right now I’ll bet she’s more than willing to be pampered. Get well soon, Sam.

  115. And Sam has my sympathy, and so do you! That must have been awful when it happened, and so worrying going forward. Sending encouragement and positive energy to both of you!

  116. I spent my weekend…working from home, doing chores in the garden on the first few days of spring sunshine (whoops it’s cold again today), knitting a little on a second sock (for my dad, big feet, likes plain things, happily doesn’t mind autumn colours), knitting on a cowl, cooking for the week as I never have time on a weekday,…

  117. So sorry to hear about your elbow, Sam. Maybe mum can knit you a scogger (medieval arm warmer) to cover the cast? I hope it heals quickly and completely. This weekend my husband and I picked up our daughter in Hamilton and took her to Fonthill to have her birthday dinner with my parents. I’m knitting socks for my husband; the first one is done and the second one is languishing sadly in my knitting bag. I got a good start on the leg but other things keep calling me. Like my favourite baby raglan sweater, knit from the top down. I love the pattern because it’s stockinette but can be switched out so easily with help from the stitch dictionary. I also dyed some paton’s kroy 4-ply wool/nylon sock yarn with lime green jello and it’s calling too. I had so much fun. Poor gray sock.

  118. Oh, no, poor Sam! Hang in there, Sam, this, too, shall pass. Ugh. So sorry. My son broke his arm two years ago, but thankfully he still had growth plate in his arm, so he didn’t need screws to hold the bone together. I am hoping through some minor miracle you have growth plate, too. But even if you don’t, I hope you heal from your injury like Adrian Peterson in the NFL (who came back way faster than expected from a knee injury).
Has Sam seen Veronica Mars? I thought she might be looking for fun stuff to stream on Netflix…
And I love your embroidered little gray sweater. 🙂 Surely it will go faster as you get more practice at it?

  119. Good grief! I can’t remember my name most of the time, and you’re asking about yesterday? Must be a really fogged brain because I’m looking at the snow coming down. Fine Spring!
Sam, best wishes and good luck. Mom’s gonna be doing your hair for some time. 🙂
Socks. Sure wish I had a baby coming as I adore that sweater!

  120. Ooo, Sam, so sorry! On the plus side, you’ll come out of this ambidextrous!
Very little knitting at my house. In rejecting a pill, the cat bit next to my fingernail and broke it. (And then the vet said her antibiotics could be given by injection, would that be more convenient?) How long does it take for a fingernail to grow past an injury half way back? Till then I’ll be fighting that torn spot every time I knit. Plus now I’m on antibiotics with the usual consequences. Fun times! Yesterday I dyed some old handspun with easter egg dye. I manipulated the yarn with forks. (See fingernail problem above.) Cheered myself up with that.

  121. Get well Sam!!
You know though, Stephanie, that little gray sweater doesn’t really NEED embroidery. It is beautiful just as it is! I would put my needle and colored wool away, and call it finished.

  122. Thanks again for the excellent workshop on Saturday!! I have a new scarf started and lever knitting is starting to feel a bit more comfortable. Looking forward to the next workshop 🙂

  123. My weekend:
    1. worked
    2. had my birthday – no cake; lots of chocolate
    3. packed to go to Japan where my son is getting married next weekend.
    4. knitting a wedding shawl for my daughter who is getting married in June. (I know, right? If we ever have grandchildren they will all be born in the same month.)
I hope Sam heals quickly and is back on her bike soon.

  124. First, here’s to a very speedy recovery for Sam…go easy (but not too easy) on the percocet.
That baby sweater you’re knitting. Probably the prettiest baby sweater. Ever.
Here in TX, knitting includes an afghan…ala Mason-Dixon, and a Madtosh Cardigan (tea leaves). Thanks for asking!

  125. Awwww… best wishes to Sam for a speedy recovery.
That little grey sweater is beautiful.

  126. Oh, Poor Sam! Haven’t broken an elbow, but did fracture a bone in my ankle once – not fun, and I’m useless on crutches so saying “stay off that foot” has no effect, I just use a cane and limp in a pathetic manner. Sending healing energy and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Sam.
My weekend? Sold my antique wheel. Shopped for groceries. Baked and cooked yesterday and today. All through: finished one toddler sweater and started a baby sweater; started socks but hated how they looked so nixed that and put the yarn back in the stash; halfway through a shawl of my own design,in mauve/pink/aqua/green three-ply handspun somewhere-close-to-sock-weight yarn made by me; and not even close to a quarter-way up the back of a pretty mango-coloured lace-panel-pattern sweater from a pattern I last made in 1974, that is oddly once again in fashion.

  127. Broken any bones – not good – but at least she has some mobility. I like others have broken an elbow – and what I remember most is not being able to knit and the getting dressed aggravation. (Especially the bra part which I am sure my husband remembers as aggravation as well!)
I was inspired last week by someone (yup, someone) – so spent a fair amount of time looking through patterns to find a match for some awesome- as in real awesome yarn I recently acquired. Still looking. Also went back to a sweater that has been a road block for me – it will be finished. Spent some time on a summer prayer shawl for a friend and while the knitting is a bit mindless – the nice thoughts and “praying” part takes some work for me! And reread At Knit’s End – which made me happy and laugh my butt off. (If only!) That book should be mandatory reading for all new knitters!
    Dorothy

  128. I had been there. I am right-hand too. No fun.
My weekend is okay. I cleaned up a whole house. I am currently crocheting a pair of socks.

  129. My husband and I hung crown molding in our living room after having lost (due to a water leak…a tiny leak made a big problem) and replaced a plaster ceiling that had molding. We are still married, and even still speaking! Yay. So, no knitting this weekend. But I am knitting another Color Affection and a Barb’s Roffled Scarf because right now I need mindless knitting.

  130. I’m sending best wishes for Sam’s speedy recovery, and a big “Attagirl” for the embroidery. That little sweater is fabulous. This weekend I worked on Gretel in Habu Cotton Gima, and finished free motion quilting a little quilt. If I knit monogamously for the next 4 weeks (no dalliances with crochet covers for rocks or one night stands with swatch samples), Gretel will be done in time for a trip to see my new grandson in NYC.

  131. Hope Sam is recovering easily!!!! Warm thoughts going out to her. And that grey sweater is amazing looking!! Keep going, Steph, you are on the right path…….

  132. Ugh, I have my non-dominant arm in a cast so I feel for her. And it’s been very difficult, although not entirely impossible to knit—(don’t tell my doctor). I’m doing mostly stockinette on the Calligraphy Sweater in Plucky Worsted.

  133. Love to you both take it easy sam speedy recovery, just adore the little sweater you fill me with inspiration steph.biig hug to you both.

  134. Hiked, biked, yoga classes, played with my landscaping, and KNITTED!. Am doing a Fair Isle cardigan, body in size 3 circular needle with cotton that is, unfortunately, not too soft (hoping it will soften some in blocking), so that half of my F.I. is purled!!!! Not my favorite project, but the results in aqua, teal and violet are awesome to behold. (If I do say so myself!)
    Thanks for asking. 🙂

  135. Sorry for Sam.Broken elbow is hard my friend required surgery after she fell off her horse and broke the left elbow. Broke both feet and it is a big bummer.
I was knitting alot on Sunday after I cut out a fittingshell for a prom dress. I had a great case of finishupis. I finished all my open projects except a small reknit. My spouse worked on his cardigan(first ever cardi.)We both were not well on top of that so doing knitting is all we could muster. Embroidery on a a baby sweater alot of small work. I did a whole wedding dress once I feel the pain. Bless you.

  136. Sooooo sorry about Sam’s arm. This, too, shall pass but it certainly sucks until it does and, Sam, hopefully you can take some comfort in the knowledge that you are one of those people who annoy the rest of us because, even “rough” you look lovely. TAke care.

  137. Hope Sam will get better soon! I broke my dominant right arm three times within a year. In that time I learnt to iron and to this day I’m not able to iron right-handed without making a terrible mess of things. So having to use the non-dominant arm opens up completely new vistas to life, still doing shoelaces may remain a bit of a challenge.
Weekend was great, I had my birthday shortly after easter and this is the time for doing whatever I like. I took the opportunity and finished three sweaters – for myself all of them, while listening to books, keeping my beak shut for an entire week (which for a consultant is a wonderful treat), cherishing the beautiful weather (cold, but sunny – no snow here any more) and having a quiet, but great time.

  138. Daughters plus bicycles have equalled a broken arm in this household too.
Knittingwise? Well, I never make socks with sock yarn because it is too damn fine. But I did just finish Suki with Malabrigo and now I’m making a top down lightweight summer cardigan out of more Malabrigo sock. That’s right, it’s too small for socks, so I am making a sweater. It’s totally logical.

  139. Best wishes to Sam for a speedy recovery (and super-glad you didn’t break your right arm)!
I’m knitting a Multnomah shawlette (free pattern on Ravelry) from a skein of Cascade color-something sock yarn, all in shades of green, like the PNW. Yarn purchased from a birthday gift certificate at a new LYS in my area.
Also kitchenered the toe of my very first hand-spun sock (first of two).
We won’t talk about what else might be on the needles, mostly because I’m not sure what all might be hiding and forgotten in that room. 😉

  140. I send get well wishes to Samantha. My daughter fell off a horse (age 9),cracked and dislocated her elbow. After the reduction, no cast but advised to do lots of swimming for P.T. So, out of the injury she became a really good swimmer.
I finished a shawl, now ready to block and have cast on for another cowl

  141. so sorry that Sam is so wounded – gentle hugs to her.
I went to Webs on Saturday with my best knitting buddy….it’s sale time there, and the flyer that landed in our mail boxes was just too enticing. A lovely set of interchangeable needles jumped into my basket !!

  142. I spent the weekend overcome by yarn and fiber fumes at DFW Fiber Fest. Stayed within my budget for fiber purchases and had a great time. Hope you can make it some year — you would get a great reception here in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
Hope by now Sam is feeling better. Hugs for you – it is hard to be a Mom when your children are hurting!

  143. Sewing, I have been sewing. Madly. The whole weekend, and the rest today. Two lovely project bags and the most perfect yoga bag. Feel like a superstar and am now back to knitting. 😀
My best wishes to Sam, what a bummer! I’ve had my domninat arm in a cast several times, and it plainly sucks. Speedy recovery!
And that embroidery on the sweater maybe fiddly as hell, but it is so awesome…

  144. totally forgot to mention the sweet boy playing the uke!
and the gorgeous sweater which may take longer to embroider than it did to knit but so worth the effort!
poor wee Sam though… I feel so bad for her, will it get her out of exams??? lol

  145. Well wishes to Sam! I was trying to put together a sweater, and it was horrible, and I kind of never want to do it again. Scratch that; I REALLY never want to do it again. I don’t like sewing seams, and I don’t like trying to figure out how to pick up 121 stitches “evenly” around half a sweater. I think I ended up with 132, and I called it good. The shoulders were the worst, and I haven’t done the inset sleeves yet. *sob!*

  146. Get well soon, Sam!
I am knitting a navy blue cardigan with little cables around the back of the neck and down both sides of the button band. It is knit top down, starting from the centre back of the neckband, with simultaneous set in sleeves. Oh, and it is my own design (with significant input from Barbara Walker and Ysolda Teague, technique-wise). Not only was the start fiddly (at one point I had four balls of yarn hanging off the work, two circular needles and two stitch holders), but I keep on having to stop knitting to do maths to work out what I need to do next. Why yes, I am making it a) more complicated than it needs to be, and b) hard for myself. It’s fun, in a slightly masochistic way…It’s okay, it’s not like I want it finished for a holiday in three weeks and it’s only at the yoke stage. Oh, hang on…
The grey sweater looks awesome, by the way.

  147. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Sam. I am knitting a slightly a-line skirt, to go with a jacket I knitted. ( the cloisonne jacket, which cme out beautiful) I found the pattern for the skirt in an old Vogue Knitting. I’ve never done a skirt, but it is so easy. Though tedious.
    All the best.

  148. Poor, hurt, Sam! I hope she did a clean fracture and not a “bag-o-bones” which my Dad did when he fell in the back yard. It took over a year to get out of the sling and then a year of PT and only got half his range of motion back. So I hope for a clean fracture for her. I hope she mends fast enough to ride to Montreal.
Meanwhile I have been struggling with my own sweater and hope to sew it up and I started some stranded knitting to make a Lillihammmer hat. I have done color work before and it came out just fine on sweaters so I am moving on to hats. Tried socks last summer but I knit too tightly and had to frog, second attempt coming up in a lovely Mountain Colors lilac. Can hardly wait to start.

  149. That broken elbow really sucks, I’m sorry to hear about it.
Your wee sweater looks adorable, I don’t know wether I wish that it gets worn gently or worn to pieces.
I’m so glad you asked what I (we) did this weekend because I can tell you that I just started reading Free-Range Knitter! At first, it made me cry (in a good way) and since then it has been a delightful mixture of laughter and tears (which is slightly annoying my husband who’s trying to get to sleep next to me, but he’s good about it). I love it, thank you for writing it!
However, on the down side, it’s because I’m reading after the little ones go to bed that I’m not making much progress on my Kate Davies Funchal Moebius…I’m six inches past the halfway mark, only 18 inches left to go on 3mm needles and clinging to hope that it will still get worn before temperatures soar. Am I delusional? Absolutely, but life is far more interesting this way (I’ll leave it at that).

  150. Hope your broken elbow heals quickly Sam!!!
I did a little gardening and fed my chickens lots of bugs that I found.
Spent time with husband at a basketball viewing party and a classical bass recital. (We were both spectating, though he plays a mean game of bball and a little bit of electric bass.)
I knit some little trees that you put on the end of a wine cork to use up some leftover yarn scraps. I feel you on the words “ridiculously fiddly…” I am grateful I don’t have to embroider. Best wishes!

  151. Poor Sam! Sending you positive thoughts and hope you heal quickly. Such a bummer.
I think there is an opportunity for a “cast cozy” here – a little yarn-bombing on Sam’s cast would be adorable!
I’m knitting socks for mom for Christmas and a hat for Dad for Christmas – I’m DETERMINED to be done by Thanksgiving this year and spend December baking cookies and decorating!

  152. Get well soon to Sam!
This weekend I watched the film “Melancholia”, saddest movie I’ve ever seen.
I’m knitting a Log Cabin blanket.

  153. What a bummer, Sam! Our daughter, Meg, broke her left wrist pretty spectacularly one year. She learned to do much more than she ever thought she would with her right hand (she’s a lefty).
As far as this weekend, I joined my spinning friends for a lovely retreat weekend on a nearby lake for much spinning, knitting, eating and drinking!

  154. Oh, I LOVE this baby sweater, I can see it has a future as an heirloom for sure. Beautiful. Sorry for Sam, hope she is back on the mend soon.

  155. Making booze of all kinds. Drinking what we make. Fun, fun, fun, fun!!
Have had 3 knee operations. Know how Sam feels. the “P” pills do help but don’t let them help for too long a time. Then they don’t want to let go!!
    Mean driveway!!!

  156. Poor Sam! Here’s to healing fast!
This weekend I played with my sock that I’ve been attempting to knit using color-work for the first time. And just for the shock value,, the sock is being a dick. Which is easy for it to do because it’s a sock with penises (or peni, or penes – for the British version of it) all over it. Really, it is!

  157. Poor Sam! I’m sending out good quick healing thoughts for her. When I broke my left wrist at 9 years old (I’m left handed) I learned to be ambidextrous at many things, including writing. Maybe this is Sam’s time to try out some of life as a lefty.
I’m plowing through to the finish line on Hood from Vogue’s Ultimate Hats book. I’m anxious to get it done so I can start on a very happy spring sweater, or on Suki, or some spring socks, or all three… I’m having a severe case of start-itis!

  158. …forgot to add!!
I am knitting several things it seems. The edging to my Cycus Shawl. The inner border of the Bridgewater Shawl. A lace scarf. Two pair of socks. And weaving a 32 inch peice of fabric for a skirt at 12 picks per inch on my rigid heddle loom.
    busy….and happy!

  159. Poor Sam, I hope her elbow heals soon- maybe take it as an excuse to eat as much cheese and ice cream as possible? Calcium to help the bone heal, you know 😛 (This was the only thing that made my broken hand dealable with…)

  160. I busted my elbow as a kid. But no cast, just a sling. I was right handed, too. I remember dictating my written homework to my mom for weeks. Hope she heals quickly!
What am I knitting? A lace circular skirt with a measly 800 stitches on each round.

  161. Get well soon wishes to Sam. Luckily, I have never broken anything – neither have my two grown-up sons. I had a lovely weekend – had a great morning rowing in a four. It really came together. Did errands and puttered around. My husband and son went skiing on Sunday and I chose to sleep in (which as a rower, I NEVER get to do) and putter around some more. Finished the first Gable Mitt and started the second; finished listening to an audiobook; watched baseball on TV. Watched (on the web) my teammates row at a regatta. Other than the water heater deciding to start leaking, it was great. My husband called the plumber.

  162. Tell her to be sure to follow all the doctor’s instructions so she will heal properly. Obviously bike’s should come with a hazardous to you health warning. I’m using all those little balls of leftover sock yarn to make a mitered square blanket. Actually it going to be 4 medium squares joined with a three needle bindoff. That and ‘Fifty Shade of Linen’.

  163. Ouch, ouch, ouch. Healing thoughts to everyone! There are special clothes for people who are disabled and need to dress themselves; Sam may be interested. Summer is coming; I recommend watercolor painting the cast.
Martha at 4:43 PM: Fingernails grow faster if you use your fingers a lot. When I type a lot, mine take about a month to grow from cuticle to tip; since you’re a knitter, yours might take only two or three weeks to get past the rough spot. Meanwhile, after the puncture heals, maybe cellophane tape or a false fingernail would cover it.

  164. Gentle hugs for Sam and wishes for swift healing and little pain.
I just finished Zuzu’s Petals this weekend in a scrumptious Prism yarn of merino/cashmere/silk that was a joy to work with. Now I’m working on the Lacy Triangle Shawl, very open, with a jewel tone mercerized cotton for a light summer shawl. Lovely to work with!
Wishing you blessings, no knots and happy knitting!

  165. Get better soon Sam!!!
I spent my weekend taking care of my 91 year old mother who has broken her little toe once again, this time in many pieces… In a few weeks they’ll operate. Odds are, the surgeon will remove it entirely! The funny thing is that my mother looks forward to it, she’s really fed up with the pain and the damper that having a hard time walking, puts on her very active social life! 🙂

  166. Drove 500km round trip with my DH and sister (both rev heads) to join 50,000 other Tasmanians watching a day of car racing, including V8s (think they are racing in Texas this season as well). Highlight was being able to work on the Gryffindor scarf (think Harry Potter) requested by a young friend (10 yr old boy) after he spent an hour perusing Charmed Knits. Got photo taken of the knitting being done with the racetrack in the background – might not impress Finn but will certainly make his dad jealous!
Will you be knitting a cape for Sam to wear during cast time?

  167. 1) Kiss the boo-boo for us all. Who knows, maybe that much boo-boo ju-ju will speed her healing.
    2) Did some spinning!!! Of Wool.
    3) Spent time with my little nephew, who is almost 40 and has two lads of his own. Spoiler alert – they grow up.

  168. What a weekend you’ve all had! Sam, I hope the healing is uneventful even if it won’t go as fast as you want it to. Doing nasty things to your dominant arm sucks! Heal correctly!
The sweater is turning out gorgeous. Very lucky baby!
I picked out yarn this weekend to knit a shawl(by Sivia). Other than that, I’ve been knitting on the three pairs of socks I seem to have on the needles. I just might get one pair finished tonight which would be awesome.

  169. OW! It’s always worse when one breaks the bendy bits. Is Sam going to be able to do the ride? I’m knitting a chunky infinity scarf of my own mad design, the problem is that I don’t know how long to make it to I just randomly wrap it around my head and guesstamate. That’s how knitting works. Right?

  170. Poor Sam! I hope she’s able to hold up for the six odd weeks it takes to get over the first hump (cast on, cast off, then physical therapy – ugh!)
I’m knitting on a sweater (it’s taking forever), a pair of socks (joy!) and a scarf (before I got stuck on one part of the pattern). I love knitting enough to power through all of these projects.
Unfortunately, I’m rushing through everything so I can start something else and rush through that too, process knitter that I am.

  171. 1. Took my son to the zoo for the first time. He’s nine months old, so he wasn’t interested in the animals so much as the texture of the bamboo leaves around him.
    2. I’m working on a Feather and Fan shawl in Prism Delicato in Harvest. It’s a beautiful yarn, and I’m addicted to the pattern. Also a pair of socks for my mom that I started a while ago and just haven’t had the wherewithal to finish.

  172. I was working on a scarf, but got sidetracked by a shawl, so now I’m working on that (typical). Love the sweater, and I’d love to knit one (in my dreams)! So sorry about Sam; hope she heals really fast!

  173. Poor Sam! i broke my tight elbow at age 12 and decided to get a matching break in the, left elbow at age 57. It’s not fun, and I am sending Sam good knitting (as in bones knitting) mojo. Good healing!

  174. Poor little Sam! Heal quickly and let others help you. I am currently working on socks. Finishing up a toddler pair, then the plan is to cast on Old Joe ‘s. Hugs to you all! 😀

  175. More sympathy for Sam — I’ve broken almost everything at least once each, and the elbow was the worst (all those nerve endings. The funny bone ain’t so funny when it’s busted.) At least she had someone to do her hair, whether or not it’s to her taste. I had to have half of mine cut off before my Significant Other (who’s never HAD long hair) could cope with it — and it had been more than long enough to sit on.
    So I knit with it.

  176. Very sorry about your daughter – hoping her arm will “knit” quickly & completely! Cute little nephew & beautiful baby sweater. Am finishing Cardigan Rose for a toddler & working on 22 Little Clouds for me.

  177. My best to Sam! I am so sorry you have to go through this.
My 3 y/o grandson was trying to do what his 5 y/o twin brothers were doing and broke his leg a couple of weeks ago. He got a John Deere cast.
Hope you heal well and that it stops hurting soon. Please follow the PT with everything you’ve got.

  178. Oh, poor Sam! I spent my weekend making baby sweaters (rather simpler ones that your lovely grey fellow there) and watching Dr. Who.
I’m been reading the archives, and suddenly realized that even though I’ve been reading off and on for almost ten years (!) I hardly ever comment. What’s wrong with me? So here I am…commenting. 🙂

  179. Best wishes to Sam for a speedy recovery!
Haven’t been knitting, but have been reading a lot of knitting books recently. . .

  180. Randomly Commented
    1. Glad you had fun teaching in Springfield. It’s rare to enjoy one’s work.
    2. Bummer for Sam. Is she ambidextrous? She could pretend she is a monkey and hold things with her feet. Hope she has a quick recovery.
    3. Luis is cute! I believe most babies lick ukuleles/guitars when handed one. Actually they lick anything you hand them.
    4. It’s the yarn fumes.
    5. The sweater is looking very beautiful and will be even more so once all the fiddly stuff is done. Just try not to think of the time.
    6. My grandparents are up from Florida, going over there for a bbq. I’m currently knitting socks, socks, a shawl… etc.
    7. Hope y’all have good and slightly less eventful week/weekend.

  181. Feel better soon, Sam!
    My weekend,
Shut down the sugaring season – best one in years but glad it’s over.
Tidied up the house. Not my favourite.
On the needles, a grey cowl and Danish shawl. The cowl is winning.
Looked through my pattern books with a cuppa licorice tea on a rainy Sunday!
    Perfect.

  182. So sorry, Sam! Having recently broken my wrist I know that broken parts are not fun! Best wishes on a speedy recovery…

  183. Ouch! That has got to hurt! Perhaps a knitted cast cover to pretty it up?? I hope the cast is off before the hot weather arrives.

  184. Sam – sorry about the broken elbow. I sure hopes it heals well and you are off on your bike soon.
    Best wishes from Santa Fe.

  185. Poor kidlet… broken arms are ghastly.
But, Stephanie, I owe you my sanity. Your posts about socks totally saved me when my DH spent far more time in the Syracuse Upstate Emergency Dept. over the past two weeks. I had never made socks before, but I bought the yarn and needles to do a pair at my LYS and finally got them started. I bought Knitting Rules and carry it back and forth to the hospital with the WIP. Thank you. I would never have started them without your posts.

  186. Please tell Sam to rest and heal well so that she can get back on her bike again.
And by the way I called Doctor’s Without Borders today and made a contribution in the amount of my birthday age coming up in a couple of weeks.

  187. Gee whiz Sam, some people will do anything for attention (but maybe you’re just the distraction mum needs at this point in time). Hope the healing is fast and as painless as possible. All the best.

  188. Poor Sam! I do hope she heals well! I remember doing something like that. Only I was five and I haven’t been a lefty since. She’ll learn after a time.

  189. Knitting-wise I pulled out a baby blanket (with stars in it…yes!!) because I surrendered to the fact that the wool I wanted to knit it with – would not get into gauge, no matter the needle or tension. Sigh. Started up a baby sweater and am zipping along. Spent time with husband and dogs and good friends. Life…gotta love it. And, reveled in the windy rainy stuff.

  190. All the best to Sam (and her devoted carers) for a speedy recovery and exponential growth in patience. Is she getting a knitted cast cover or something perhaps?

  191. o my gosh, did they make her hang her hand from that torture device to set the elbow? My dad broke his wrist and they stuck his fingers in this glove like thing suspended from the cieling, hung weights over his arm to pull the wrist into place. I was convinced this was wrong, until I asked an orthopedist friend who said no, this was typical. Hope if they did that they gave her lots of good drugs! I’m working on a twisted flower sock and an adamus shawl to replace the one my youngest daughter felted!

  192. Oh, Sam! I’m so sorry! Learning to do things with the other hand and depend on others for help is no fun (I broke a wrist and tore the ligaments in an ankle). My son has never broken anything but when young he had so many groin injuries from bike wrecks and playing Tarzan that I was afraid we were going to be visited by child protective seervices!

  193. Prayers for a quick and painless healing for Sam. I wish it had not happened but better at the end of your driveway than on one of your fund raising marathons! Hugs!!!

  194. Oh Sam, wishing you a speedy recovery. I did something similar as a kindergartner. It’s way easier to be an instant lefty at that size. At least your fingers are free, texting, knitting, doing things is still possible. Drink milk, lots of milk
On the needles this weekend a BSJ for my first great niece or nephew. Daddy was a Marine and the yarn is camoflauge. Whilenshe isn’t due until mid October, I can’t convince her to look at patterns. She says there’s plenty of time. Ha!!!
Actually is it startitis if you drag it out over several weeks? Barnacle, Crosscheck, Ami-Ami, the Dragon Shawl and Dreambird have all appeared on my needles inthe last couple of months. A baby hat and two pairs of booties have been on and finished.

  195. OweeeOweeOwee! So sorry for Sam. I am drinking hot tea to offset the cold from the ice bag on my newly diagnosed arthritic knee. My new best friend is the hiking pole that has now turned into a cane. The hiking trip we are taking to Utah will be a knitting and reading trip in a glorious location. Glass half full.
Alice’s drapey cardigan vest is off the knitting needles, and on the joining needles. Steve’s socks are an experimental design. Why do I experiment on size 14EEEEEsocks?? His birthday is in two weeks, that’s why. Grandson Paddy had a birthday in three weeks. He’ll probably get socks too – still growing, and size 10 1/2 (men’s size). I finished spinning the yarn from the last Knot Hysteria retreat, got about 170 yds of chain plies yarn; made a hat and pair of booties in my own design.
Enforced knee rest makes for production.

  196. I did not knit anything this last weekend – I have no time because I have ONLY THREE DAYS LEFT AND I’M DONE MY DEGREE!!!!
I am so happy I could cry. Or maybe that’s because of my last remaining term paper due on Wednesday that is not nearly finished. Either/or.
Poor Sam. Yay Percocet! When my man broke his leg and was on it he was the most agreeable, amiable, sweetest version of himself ever. Seriously thought about getting him hooked on it.
Just kidding, I’m in social work, I know how bad that really be. 🙂

  197. I had a very memorable weekend. I took a class with Jane Slicer-Smith and another with Amy Tyler from Madelinetosh. They taught at Midwest Masters in Neenah WI. It was heaven. And this weekend I’m going to a knitting retreat. Life can’t get any better!
I hope Sam heals quickly and stays comfortable.

  198. Sorry, Amy Hendrix, president of Madelinetosh was the teacher. Amy Tyler had a class too.

  199. Ouch! Poor Sam! Sending good thoughts for quick and painless healing.
I’m watching the NCAA Championship (GO BLUE!) and knitting a self-designed bamboo lace shawl for a wedding in July. It’s got lilys and it’s going to have embroidered dragonflies.

  200. So sorry to hear about Sam. The good news is that the young ones usually heal well & relatively quickly. Best wishes. . .
I gave a much-needed pedicure to one of my sheep. And as lovely as that sounds to us, Mary wasn’t particularly appreciative. My back is now ferkockteh, so I took a break & spent several hours on the couch knitting. I finished another Aidez & got it sewed together! 🙂

  201. So sorry to read about Sam’s injury!
Many knitters from the Boston, Mass., area are familiar with Windsor Button Shop, known for its huge button selection and excellent choice of sewing notions, and, since 1998, YARN! They’re closing (lost lease). I’ve been buying stuff there for almost 50 years…went for a final visit on Saturday and picked up two bags of yarn for a sweater. Then Sunday I decided to design a “Windsor Button Memorial Sweater.” Today I asked a friend who will be making her final visit tomorrow to pick me up several sets of buttons for the sweater. I didn’t do much knitting this weekend, however.

  202. Went to VKL, “Seattle” for yarn vending purposes. I saw and met lots of cool people. Also did it mostly one handed be ause of tennis elbow and am crazy grateful for knitting designer type friends who helped me lug stuff around and hang up stuff.

  203. OH, POOR GIRL! I feel for her. Broke my shoulder when I was 12 and was in the EXACT same cast-ish sock wrap because they couldn’t cast my shoulder, so they did a tube thingy and then wrapped it around my ribs to immobilize my shoulder. Thankfully, she’s older and doesn’t have to endure the teasing as to what I was “doing” underneath my shirt with my hand to parts unnamed. Ya, it was NOT fun.
I accidentally started a BBQ sauce business this weekend! Hubby snuck the samples to his work and I have sauces to make and mega orders to fill.

  204. Working on a new pattern in…..crochet….(eek!) with hubby harping about his email campaign that is supposedly more important. I simply do not see how 🙂
My daughter broke her arm last year – after two weeks in a cast she had to have surgery. Got really, really tired of washing her hair in the sink. Poor Yarn Harlot and poor Sam!

  205. Your year so far seems to include some pretty rough weather handled with grace in your post. I wish for fair winds to come your way for a while. Soooo sorry Sam is out of action for cycling and beyond. I’m looking at Luis’s little argyle socks. Tell me about them!!!!!!!

  206. So sorry about Sam. There’s nothing worst than watching your kid in pain. Would you believe I started 2 sweaters this weekend, just in time for 24 new inches of snow.

  207. Poor Sam! And elbow breaks can be difficult….
If you ever DO get to Springfield, Illinois, I’ll be there — my mom lives there, and I visit every month of so!
And I ripped out most of a sock and started all over….

  208. Joining the rest of the Blog in wishing Sam speedy healing!
Unfortunately, I spent my weekend knitting child-size chemo caps. I can’t do a blasted thing to fix leukemia, but at least I can make sure that my great-niece has the best collection of hats EVER…starting with these three.

  209. Sam! I’m so sorry. What a bummer…. I am sending you the best wishes possible for a fast recovery!

  210. Oh Sam,
I so get it! Two years ago I broke my left arm, spiral mid-humerus fracture. Nasty. I am left-handed, and a sign language interpreter/typing transcriber to boot. Four months of awkward and then full recovery. Now it is as if it never happened except for a weird bumpy shape in my arm. Keep telling yourself “this too will pass” because the truth is…. it does 🙂

  211. Oh Poor Sam!!!! I broke my right elbow 3 weeks ago…I waited 2 weeks to go in and see about it so they couldn’t cast me….it hurt like crazy…but I’m glad I don’t have that cast…..

  212. I feel for you Sam.
I did something similar on Friday. Fell down the stairs at school. Fractured the Left Humerus up high. Arm in sling. No knitting. In the middle of crochet project with yarn I had been waiting on in the mail. Okay, I can crochet a little so all is not lost. I feel for you Sam, this is just lame! And this week is my spring break. Sigh.

  213. So sorry about Sam’s elbow! I have been kntting a scarf with Dream in Color Smooshy in Cashmere Atomic Blue for my niece’s upcoming 18th birthday. It’s a simple pattern that changes from 48 stitches on #7s to 24 stitches on #4 so it puckers. Loving the process using brand-new cubics I bought just for the yarn!

  214. Poor Sam. Here’s to being brave! You’ll have a weatherwise elbow now. Lovely baby sweater! (as usual) Lou is getting started early on his music, he’ll fit in with the rest of your musical family.

  215. poor Sam. Hope it’s not painful. Sending good wishes and hopes for quick healing.
I’m working on Color Affection in lace weight. I keep stopping to admire how “fluttery” it is!

  216. Sorry about Sam’s arm! Ouch!! Can you knit her up a pretty sling? I am finishing up my “Belfast Sweater” in cascade Eco and bouncing between a honey cowl in madelinetosh in a purple dk weight and a doctor who scarf that I usually only work on in the car.

  217. Ouch! I just want to send well wishes to Sam. She has proven to be exceptional once again: broken elbows are much more complicated than broken arms. Hang in there.

  218. Ouch. I think it’s a mom thing…we moms ache so when we see our kids hurt…and they get the percocet… we are left to our knitting, which hopefully is simple enough, wonderfully soft, and not so important enough that its okay if we have to rip it out because…
Spinning today. Macaw colored (which means lots) corriedale. Lovely.
Hugs and a nice beer when you have a moment.

  219. Ouch! Tell Sam to get right on with the physical therapy as soon as they will let her! I broke my right shoulder in mid September 2012, and just last month got back on my bike. It’ll be so worth the time (and the pain). Poor thing!
And I love the little gray sweater!

  220. Oh, so sorry for Sam (and I know all that worry is no fun for mom either–been there)! Hang in there. Those pictures of Luis are precious as is the new sweater. Good luck with the embroidery, looks like you’ve acquired a new skill.

  221. And, oh yeah, I’m knitting an Easy Peasy baby blanket (diagonal stripes). It’s the end of my son’s senior year and very busy, so garter stitch is all I can handle at the moment.

  222. Dealt with a washing machine crisis – we convinced the machine, which had decided that its door was always open (and thus it wouldn’t *wash*) that now its door is always closed. A fun project, and saves appliance shopping!

  223. Get well Sam! Last fall my knitting and I followed my children through a week in the hospital with dd 1, knee surgery and a year of PT with dd 2, and all the orthopedic visits required of a broken pinky with ds. And I went home and told my remaining kid to stay well or I’d have to resign.
Currently knitting a pair of socks in the froot loop pattern and the swirl shawl in Jojoland. I started my shawl right before you finished yours, but it caused inexcusable errors and was put in time out for months at a time. On the last row of swirls now!

  224. I am here to wish Sam well in the recuperation of her busted elbow. At some point, they will probably have you doing physical therapy, and when this happens you must demand a skilled, young, handsome fellow with a good sense of humor to do this therapy. Makes all the difference in the world.
    Cheers,
    Jo

  225. Well since you asked: I’m not knitting these:http://www.yourknittinglife.com/pattern-previews/fishing-cap
because I just finished my ninth one. Made one each for DH & DD for Christmas and when DD wore it to a church function the pastor requested that I make some for a bazzar they had this last weekend (hence the answer to that question too.) Unfortunately, I caved and told a dear friend that I would indeed make her one for each of her three grandchildren for next Christmas, so am not out of the woods yet. Ah at least I’m getting good at this pattern, but oh the lace it calls to me… am so ready to work something light and delicate.

  226. Poor girl! Sending healing wibes halfway around the world…
As for what I am knitting? I just looked around in my bedroom and counted like eight UFO-s, and thats only what I could see…

  227. All the very best to Sam! Poor love.
Knitting for me this past weekend was alternating between my Holden Shawlette and a pair of leg-warmies for a two year old.

  228. I’m sending all my courage to Sam and wish that the healing will be quick!
You should draw a ball of yarn and some knitting needles on the cast, and write “The knitters love you!”.
This weekend I saw the circus performance Knitting peace, excellent show, the acrobats are great and there was actuall knitting on stage.
I also finished a baby sweater, cast on a Cupcake Cutie Cap and blocked a Mystery KAL shawl.

  229. I’d like to tell Sam that she doesn’t look rough to me! 🙂
What I did on the weekend? Participating in a theatre festival with my group where we had 48 hours to produce a 10 minute show after they announced the topic. It was exhausting – and huge fun!

  230. This weekend the Lady Galadriel (Me) made out of the finest polyester an Elven/Hobbit reversible cloak for a very worthy 8 year old who is having a middle-earth party in 2 weeks time. the aforementioned lady then hit ‘Elf-Amazon’ and found a repro broach for the cloak and a light up sword that makes battle noises AND a plastic, gold ONE RING !!! (I’m going for favourite Aunty :))
Best wishes to Sam…. Chocolate helps bones heal…. its a medical fact.

  231. I had an amazing weekend at the Academy of Country Music awards in Las Vegas. Finished and delivered yet another Dean Street Hat, working on an Adamas shawl for the rest of the trip. All Malabrigo knitting…… 😉 which makes me happy.
Best wishes to Sam for a speedy recovery!!

  232. Sam, I did a face plant on the pavement thinking that a 57 y/o had any business running. Broke a lip, cracked a tooth and banged up a knee. and scraped my left hand raw, but it’s healed up now. Just wish my ego was, too.
Steph: there will always be more babies, but I tend to think you will be just fine on timing.
And I washed and picked mohair locks this weekend. The weather was yummy and it was a fulfilling thing to do. Picking up Jacob fleeces today…let me know if you want some!

  233. oh man. well thankfully it wasn’t worse. Here’s to speedy healing.
I am working on a game of thrones mysery kal and a Stowe that I am knitting with two stands if tillie thomas; lace weight beaded. alas. it is beautiful. and it will take a year no doubt, but it is loverly.

  234. Best wishes, Sam for a speedy recovery. Daughter #2 is having a baby so I am frantically knitting little sweaters and two blankets for her baby shower. Hubby is doing all the housework and laundry – a great man! Love your baby sweater. I have one Dale in my que too. Thanks for your inspiration.

  235. Oh, poor SAM! And poor you too! While it seems wildly inappropriate to comment on my knitting at this point, I am working on what my friends call the dreaded red shawl. The double strands of fine easily tangled yarn and the ease with which this yarn displays mistakes are driving me nuts. But I love the color and the weight and the softness and I persevere for 72 more inches. Because we are not sane, we are knitters.

  236. I love it that in the throes of injury she was concerned about her hair. That’s one tuff (and stylish) cookie. Hoping for a speedy and painless recovery. My daughter broke her elbow 4 days before we left for a fly fishing trip. The pictures of her casting in a cast are really funny. Kids.

  237. Stephanie,
Please know that you are in my prayers, as is Sam. While Sam needs some good old fashioned bone healing, you need some emotional healing. Ending a time in your life that produced such great things as Sock Summitt is a huge stressor. I know you don’t believe as I do but I’ll be doing a few decades of the rosary for you and Sam. May you find inner peace to replace the pain and hurt you must be feeling right now. Thank you for your gracious post on the topic. I expected no less and wasn’t at all surprised when you delivered.

  238. I finished a sock. now this is moment for the books if you knew my sock history. the second awaits the gusset but i lost the pattern. did finish the bohus and have a good start on a baby sweater that is less fiddly than yours. it will look like a shawl collared letter sweater of the past when done. Also finished one half of Berocco’s pern. need to start the other panel but baby sweater on the pern needles. keeps my old brain active anyway/

  239. Hope Sam heals fast. Look forward to seeing her smile back on that beautiful face!

  240. 1. Ouch! for Sam. Lots of good healing juju coming her way.
    2. Hugs for Luis just because he’s so stinkin’ cute.
    3. Great weekend here, taught a couple of classes, hung out with the hubby and good friends, all in all rather perfect.
    4. Almost done with Samantha Featherweight Lace Shawl. Mohair/silk, so both yummy and a pain in the ass all at the same time.

  241. Poor Sam – that had to hurt. Working on a new shawl design in Entrelac. I’ll have the test piece done in about a week – I so sincerely hope.
The weather was so lovely that we actually spent time outside – walking – getting ice cream – just being in the fresh air. All in all an unremarkable weekend – just like I like them.

  242. I’m busy making new knitters. Not the baby way, but the teaching way. I just finished an enormous grey, circular shawl and I wish I could wrap it around you and Sam.
Oh yeah, we had a little earthquake today. Apparently it was centered in Iran. I thought I was just too hungry since I hadn’t had lunch. They evacuated the offices and my hubby came home. Yay for an early day!

  243. Ouch! Fell on my elbow & cracked it once, very painful but break was in a part such that a cast would not have been effective. Wore a sling for a week, though. Miss Sam IS a trouper; being one of yours, how could she be otherwise?
This past weekend DiscoDame & I went to our local Scottish Heritage Festival at the library, where I discovered my tolerance for bagpiping is exactly 55 minutes. There were lots of lovely gents in kilts, so the view couldn’t be dissed. Lots of nice wool tartans! Cute knees! And some absolutely fabulous kilt hose. We are now considering getting a kilt for the Plaidman; I would of course be in charge of knitting his hosiery. May have to rethink this . . .

  244. oh my! i hope sam’s elbow all heals smoothly. poor thing!
weekend was a blur. i’d like to recollect that it was lovely, which i’m sure it was, but i can’t recall. it’s what happens when you come back from out of town for a long spell and then decide it’s a great idea to have out of town guests come visit in less than 12 hours.
currently knitting the relax sweater (the name just called to me – i just hope i have enough yarn…) and the seamless baby kimono for a baby shower.
also, on your last post, yes, new ends lead to new beginnings. excited to see where things take you. what a trip while it lasted.

  245. Ditto to all the supportive remarks for Sam!
Love, love, love the baby sweater.
I’m trying to finish a sweater for my husband. The pattern is badly written with many mistakes throughout. I’m renaming it, “On a wing and a prayer.”

  246. Sympathies to the patient. A knitted sling would be lovely and oh so practical.

  247. Found out that my husband is still in remission (Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma) after 2 1/2 years. Another checkup in six months. Anxiety going in to the appointment – celebration coming out. We are aware life is able to change at just a moment’s notice. For now, full speed ahead – enjoy spring and summer.

  248. Oh, Sam! I hope your elbow is better soon. My son at 9 years old broke his elbow and had to have surgery and a pin inserted. He was still able to build complicated lego contraptions one handed!
This weekend? I worked. But it’s ok. I just started working for fiber optic yarn! I get to make my own schedule, work from home, and finger pretty yarn! It’s the best job ever!

  249. Poor Sam. The only bright thing I can think of to say, is that she will probably get quite adept at using her left hand. And being ambidextrous is which is a useful skill, albeit a tough way to acquire it. I broke my right hand in Grade 8, and 50 years later, can still write with my left hand.

  250. Ouch! Get better soon Sam!
My daughter’s good friend was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and started radiation on his 13th birthday. I immediately knit him a Lorne’s hat in our school’s uniform color. It is the only hat he will wear, so his Mama asked for more so she can wash the original. Of course I’ve stopped everything to knit as many Lorne’s hats as I can:)
Before that, I had just finished a Belarus Cardigan for myself and have Nutkin socks on the needles.

  251. I had a lovely weekend! A friend from my knitting group and I drove up to Biddeford, ME and visited this amazing new yarn store and dyehouse at the Saco River Mills building. If you have a moment, you should check out their website and story – it’s wonderful and inspiring how they’ve saved a piece of history: http://www.sacoriverdyehouse.com/. We then returned to Boston in time to go to Amy Herzog’s book release party in Cambridge for “Knit to Flatter”. Such a wonderful event and book!
I was working on an Arroyo shawl in Mushishi, but as I neared the end I decided it was too short (bummer) so it’s in timeout until I have the strength to frog. I’m now knitting a hat for myself (finally) out of Berroco Ultra Alpaca – loving the quick and portable knit!

  252. A broken arm? The one that writes, right? Well, that seriously sucks. I broke an ankle two years ago…and while I didn’t use it to write, getting around was seriously a challenge. I hope dear daughter gets better soon. Lavish lots of love on her. Although, at least it’s not summer because that cast might be itchy and hot!

  253. On the bright side for Sam, better that it happened in the driveway with Momma there to take care of you and not otherwise. Love and best wishes sending healing thoughts….

  254. I’m working on a few shawls that I want to finish soon. I also have some socks that are suffering from SSS so those need to be done as well.
    I hope Sam heals quickly!

  255. Props to Sam for looking so cute in hospital couture! I’m making the never ending afghan of mitered squares which will be beautiful when I finished all 56 of them. If I keep my sanity intact!

  256. Poor Sam! We also had a bike fall this weekend. When I say “we” I mean me and my 3 year old who was sitting on the kid seat. Thankfully we are both fine, but it was so scary after the fall looking back and see her shocked crying face. I’m not totally over yet, but we got back on the bike, just to not let the fear sink in.

  257. I think Sam needs a clever and colorful knitted cast cozy.
This weekend… did a little crochet (sorry!), made a big beautiful Greek salad, and tried to get the house tornado-ready. Just your average Kansas weekend.

  258. I hope Sam heals quickly and let her know that my mom discovered a us size 0 needle is great for the itching.
Here all 3 of us have colds and our 19 month old daughter also has her first double ear infection and is cutting 3 molars.

  259. I had lunch with my oldest friend, failed to out myself to her for the third time, and then went to a freaking amazing and hilarious little drag show, and was amazed at how many people paid for tickets apparently knowing NOTHING about the group putting it on and walked out offended.
Sunday I filed my tax return for 2012 even though I know it’s wrong and I’m going to have to amend it, but at least that sucker is checked off the to-do list before the deadline.
Beyond that, there was too much unpacking for much knitting but I did finish another monster for 600 Monsters, so that box will go in the mail tomorrow.
Best of luck to Sam and her poor arm (and you)! I’m guessing she’s going to have a LONG few weeks. Good thing she’s young and will heal quickly.

  260. Oh no! Poor Sam! Here’s to wishing her a fast recovery. Broken arms suck. I’ve been there. 🙁
Right now I’m winding the yarn to begin Glenna C’s Lakeshore shawl. I’ve been in the process of knitting the Cirque socks in size large… but cabling 80 stitches around is such slow going! I need some beautiful lace to shake it up!

  261. I hope Sam is feeling better and I am sure she is dealing with that cast amazingly well. The young ones always do! My 50 year old sister and my 18 year daughter had fairly similar knee surgery recently: sister on crutches for weeks, daughter stopped crutching it after 2 days.
Sara from Boston, thanks for mentioning the Saco River Dyehouse, I’m definitely going to check it out after following your link.
As for what’s on my needles? Pretty diamond pattern sweater for one daughter, must begin second sleeve of Irish knit for other daughter (promised to her for college and, gasp, that starts in the fall), and just finished swatching for Zuzu’s Petals cowl/shawlette for me!http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/zuzus-petals

  262. My younger daughter broke her elbow when she was about 3. Sorry Sam!
This weekend we enjoyed the spring weather! We played “horse” and different times. The kids played one-on-one basketball. the kids rode bikes and hung out laundry. What did the dh and I do? Cut firewood, split firewood…repeat. lol We cook and heat with wood only…so it was good weather for stocking up.
I am working on two pairs of socks, and a baby sweater….it depends on where I am sitting and who is trying to talk to me what I am working on in the moment. Hope the week gets better even though for us the weather is supposed to get yucky again. Kind of like a “Spring? SIKE!”

  263. Poor Sam! I broke a bunch of the bones in my foot and ankle when I was about her age. An elbow sounds even worse. Tell her at least she’s not trying to navigate on crutches in the winter. I came close to breaking other bones more than once, slipping and falling. Although if I had to choose, I am sure having an arm out of commission is way worse than a foot/leg. 🙁
I am on the button band of my second ever sweater. Vera Sanon’s Cloud Everyday Cardigan. I am going to love it but I’ve been working on it forever and I want it done!!!

  264. Sincere condolences to Sam. How unfortunate. I’m sure her friends and family will all step up to help her negotiate the world as a temporary left-hander. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  265. Sam’ll get better with her left arm. It’s rough, but she’s strong.
This weekend I knit on my lace scarf. I’m doing it with a yarn that’s only 10% mohair, which means it’s fuzzy without being crazy-making. It’s a lovely verigated white to dark grey, with long, long color changes, less self-striping and more self-blocking. I love it.

  266. YA! I am reading from Springfield, Illinois!!
Sorry to hear about your daughter’s arm! She doesn’t look too rough in the picture. Fast healing to your Daughter and fast knitting to you!!

  267. Get well wishes to Sam. Since you asked we opened our summer lake house in Michigan. Started a worsted version of A Grey Loop and picked back up a entrelac project that my 7-year old cousin got a hold of at Thanksgiving in 2011. Took me awhile to get back to a stage that I could work it, but it is back on track and out of hibernation.

  268. So sorry to hear about Sam’s injury; that photo just conjures up all the pain and frustration she must be feeling. I can commiserate, having been there exactly a year ago (fell off my bike, broke my elbow in two places, had surgery, missed sock camp). As others have said, going to physiotherapy and doing the exercises daily – as soon as possible – is incredibly important. Elbows tend to lock up and get stuck, but then they do start to loosen up more after about 6 months. Last year was a write-off for me in terms of cycling, but I did find that getting back on my bike a few times in the summer for just a short ride around the block helped dispel jitters and nervousness about getting back in the saddle. Good luck and good healing!! It takes a lot of patience, but it does get better.

  269. I was going to go for a bike ride after work, but maybe I should reconsider. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! That means you too, Stephanie! As the mother of a boy who broke the same arm 2 years in a row, I know how stressful it is for those of us on the other side of the bed rail!

  270. Ouch! Broken arms are no fun.
This weekend? Led two seminars at a homeschooling conference, managed to only mention knitting about 4 times (which is good, since it was not remotely related to my topic).
Knitting an alpaca shawl for next fall, and crocheting about 60 small flowers to sew onto a wallhanging. I’m halfway through the flowers, and maybe 20% done on the shawl.

  271. It would take some serious self-bribery to get me through all that embroidery. chocolate after each one? some special wine when they’re all done?
Poor Sam! A right-handed friend of mine became the picture of misery when he broke his right collarbone.
I’m knitting, finally, the edging for a shawl that I’ve made up as I’ve gone along (it’s mostly stockinette). I made the yarn, too, so I’ve got a rather severe case of pride-of-makership.

  272. Knitting needles in the cast is a bad idea. If you break the skin an infection will follow. Advice from a nurse who has seen the problem many times. On the needles Windschief by Stephen West-very clever hat and cowl. If I count it would go faster.
    ellie

  273. Injury and emotional stress thereof aside, Sam has a beautiful manicure, it’s impossible to think she looks “rough” when she has such pretty nails! 🙂

  274. Lovely spring weekend here in SoCal, I got my patio pots all ready for veggies and herbs. And worked on 2 baby sweaters. And a pair of socks. And took my husband to the urgent care for 5 stitches in his right hand after he was cruelly bitten by a cat food can lid. And he’s righthanded. No guitar-playing or typing for him for a while.

  275. The sweater is gorgeous, and I’m sure the embroidery will go just fine. You’ll be whizzing through by the time you get to the end. Sam’s elbow?? Poor thing! Hope she mends quickly..she’s young, she should. And she doesn’t look rough in the photo.. 😉 As for driving to SPRINGFIELD ONTARIO??!??!!! OMG…you were right next to my hometown..hope they treated you well! Next time you go to Springfield, make the 1/2 hour drive to Little Red Mitten in St. Thomas, I’m sure Joan wouldn’t mind..(and neither would anyone in the shop…)

  276. Oh ouch! My daughter broke the pinky finger on her dominant hand last summer. A freak accident involving a horse stepping on it. You never realize how important one little finger is until it’s out of commission. Surgery and many months of therapy later, it’s functional, if not entirely straight. All that to say I have sympathy for Sam’s pain—and the extra mothering you’re doing right now.
What’s on my needles? I’m still on Selkie, which was started right after Christmas. Had a gauge accident (the understatement of the year), and am still on the do-over. Have a couple of hats waiting in the wings, and some thread crochet I dabble in from time to time.

  277. I am sooo sorry that this happen to you Sam! I broke my wrist 5 weeks before heading out on a solo adventure around the middle east. I thought it was the end of my trip. But I healed fast and went anyway. Milk it for all it’s worth! 🙂
What did I do on the weekend? I’m glad you asked. 🙂 I was lucky enough to spend the weekend with my husband (sans kids – thank you in-laws!) in San Francisco (live in Colorado). I got to visit Art Fibers on Sutter St. It is a truly magical store. I also got to go to the Kabuki baths in Japan Town and did yoga at a yoga center where I used to spend a lot of time. It was truly a magical weekend with too much good food, good friends and connecting with the hubby.

  278. Poor Sam – I hope it heals quickly and that you feel brighter soon. It’s sometimes amazing what you can do with one hand – and also the things where one discovers that two are needed (like tying hair up). At least you have family around to help.

  279. Poor Sam, I’ve broken both my arms twice – yes I’m an overachiever. The last break was to my forearm, but I was in a cast from fingers to armpit because both bones were broken and there was to be no twisting. Anyway, the hardest part was brushing my teeth lefthanded and shaving my armpits (my left armpit wasn’t in the right spot for my casted arm to reach).

  280. Oh darling, aching Sam – I’m so sorry. I see you said this happened on the weekend – but your post was put up on Monday, which happened to be my son’s 28th birthday. A dozen years ago on his 16th birthday (at the PARTY!) he got shoved on the basketball court and got a compound fracture of his left arm. He was in a giant cast much like the one Sam is in. I hope she feels better soon. I didn’t read the previous comments but I’m betting this is about comment #254 that mentions yet another broken arm story!
p.s. Son is fine and dandy and in fact is deploying to Afghanistan soon as well.

  281. As a resident of Springfield, Illinois, I hope you visit our fair city sometime. I will be first in line. Hope Sam is feeling better. I have never broken anything in a bike fall, but with how clumsy I am, it’s only a matter of time.

  282. This weekend we bought my wedding band from a local jeweler. (So amazing!) Our wedding is approaching at a breakneck rate and I have zero knitting planned for it. While that prevents last minute lace finishing nightmares it also leave us with a knitting free wedding… which isn’t quire right either.
Wishing Sam the best. She’s going to have some serious bragging rights about that break. At least the young heal less slowly!

  283. Sending good thoughts for Sam!
    This sweater is gorgeous!
And this weekend, I finished up toes and Kitchener for 3 pairs of socks! All ready for next fall here in Central Calif.

  284. Poor Sam! I dislocated my knee-cap last year, and I remember the joys of percocet and ortho-specialists!
    Hope she gets better soon!
