Things here have been stressful lately. (I hear you. You’re all like "YA THINK?!") Despite the way that I occasionally create stress in my life by accident by trying to get a lot done, it turns out that I really only enjoy stress when I’m in charge of how much there is and when it lets up. This kind? I’m as good at this as I am at bench pressing pianos, and so I have decided to Sort. It. Out. There’s a book deadline bearing down on me (almost done I am almost done) I’m still training for the bike rally (holy cow that is only a few weeks away I should be out riding) and the house is trashed (I say trashed but I mean that I am about to be on a reality show). All these things wear on me pretty much equally. (That’s a lie. the book is killing me and I am really scared about the rally. The trashed house worries me less. You know what happens if your house is trashed for a while? Nothing, except for you feel sort of bad about it and you can’t have people over.)
The thing is, I’m pretty smart. I know what to do when things get ugly. Jen calls it "going nuclear" and she doesn’t mean like the bomb, she means like a family. Drilling down to just the basics – because when it feels like things are crazy, the first thing to go is the ability to identify priorities. What’s that great quote from Natalie Goldberg? "Stress is an ignorant state. It believes everything is an emergency."
The thing is, everything isn’t. The book really is. The Bike rally really is. The trashed house well, it’s approaching an emergency, but I still feel like there’s some wiggle room there. (You can’t smell it, so that has to mean we have some time.) I sat down a few days ago and thought about what was making me crazy, what was actually functionally important, and what absolutely was not – and then I tried to make things as good and sensible and orderly as possible. I mean, yeah, there’s stuff I have to do, but what would be wrong with doing it all as nicely as possible?
In the end I came up with this plan: I will get up early each morning, and put on my riding things and leave. I’ll do my 2 hour training ride straight off each day so that no matter what else happens, I know I can’t end up screwed for the rally, panting helplessly like the middle-aged crap scene I’m so afraid of being while trying to catch up with a peloton of gazelle-like young men on carbon fibre bikes who have so much less body hair than me that it’s actually unnerving. 
(That’s the Humber river, if you’re the sort that cares.)
So far, so good. I rode for two hours on Sunday and Monday, and met up with Jen this morning to ride for 50km. (That’s two and a half hours, if you’re wondering. We are dedicated, but not fast.) If I can keep this up for the next few weeks – along with longer rides (100km) on the weekends, I should be okay. Not a gazelle, but okay. I’m okay with being okay. I just don’t want it to kill me.
The book? That solution was actually easy. The art of writing is really more the art of showing up and sitting at your desk until it’s done, and other than how hard it is on the heart to sit there for hours and hours, It’s pretty doable. Still, if you’re trying to lower your stress? 
Check it out. I’ve got an office set up in the backyard, for several hours a day – or at least as long as the sun is shining. I’ve got my laptop, the shade of a big tree, some knitting nearby, so I can knit while I’m thinking, and yeah -that’s a beer, and yeah, I’m going to drink it in the afternoon, and you know what else? It’s going to be awesome.
The knitting- there’s two kinds there, to make sure all my knitting needs are met, and we can talk more about that tomorrow. The trashed house? Yeah, that’s still a problem, but let me tell you this. You can’t see it from the backyard.
Why else would they have invented laptops!
You sound extremely organized to me – despite your protestations to the contrary! About the ‘trashed’ house? There are other adults in and around your home, eh? Ask for their help – then girlfriend, you’re cookin’ with gas….
The best thing about working in the back yard….you can’t see the inside of the house!

Also important to recall, “honey don’t look over there is a valid thought process” and can be repeated for every corner in the room and can be repeated for all rooms which are in your abode.

And if you find yourself briefly dead to shame and invite carefully selected friends over (not anyone who’ll twitch,) they will then feel able to invite you over when they’re less than immaculate.

I like your plan, and maybe I’ll have a beer in the middle of My day. I’m already knitting.
I second (treble?) the other posts about delegating laundry, food cooking, shopping, running vacuum cleaners, cat litter scooping, to all those underutilized personnel that assisted in making the messes/dirty laundry in the first place. (Except the cat, who is excused, as she is management, and not staff.) Coffee, chocolate, and something good and motivating on the stereo. NPR in the US has a collection of summer hits from 1963 to last year that is oddly satisfying. Go you!!

I was literally just cleaning my house like a fiend and driving myself crazy. Something in me said, “Stop!” and the next thing I realize is that I’m reading your blog. The house can wait…my sanity cannot. Thanks for your insights on prioritizing. It’s awesome to read that someone I hold in such high regard deals with some of the same issues that I do!

Your plan is marvelous. Everything from getting the hardest part done first to letting the house slide until you can get to it to planting yourself in the backyard–with knitting and beer. Plans like yours should be had more often.
Also, I have to say this: You are inspirational. In the face of grief, loss, and the normal-but-crazy business of keeping a family, you are still working to keep them fed, honoring your commitments and beliefs, and working to take care of yourself. You are amazing, and as a young woman slightly older than your daughters, I am proud to know you, even if only through a blog.
You made me take a step back and breathe. If I sit at my computer and work for a few hours — and don’t get on Facebook(>_<) — I should feel a lot better about everything looming overhead.

as for the house, when someone complains (yes, people actually LIVE in my house, including two teenagers) about the state of my house (it’s picked up, not detail cleaned), I tell them where the cleaners are (under the kitchen sink and in the bathroom closet) and that they are more than welcome to clean it if it bothers them so much.
That’s totally how you do it!
I just take off my glasses when entering the house, go directly to the fridge and pour myself a hefty glass of wine. Can’t make out the mess – everything kinda looks airbrushed and fuzzy ’round the edges. Keep up the wonderful work Mz. Harlot – as always thanks for the laughs!
Sounds to me like you have your priorities straight; good idea to get the training ride done first thing before other stuff pops up, which always happens in a family. I can’t wait for the new book! And…what is the reality show, or are you not allowed to say? I usually am a lurker but wanted to say that you are an inspiration to all of us who knit and raise families and get through each day.
As someone who is working on an advanced degree let me recommend one thing. Cleaning service. Even just a one-time visit can be sanity saving. When I’m in the midst of classes and working (off for the summer, yippie!) I have cleaners come in every two weeks to take care of the essentials. It’s wonderful. I’m thinking of running a half-marathon since I’ll have all that extra time once I have them starting up again in fall. (walking away, cackling at the ludicrousness of that statement)
yes. don’t worry about the house. Ride that laptop. Pound that bike. And knit in between.
I’m with those who say that everyone who lives in a house should take responsibility for cleaning tidying etc. It shouldn’t all fall on your shoulders. You need those shoulders to knit! And to type…
I’m also working on not sweating the small stuff right now. A bit of sunshine works wonders, the knitting fits in between the rest and indeed, it will all pass… a spot of blog-reading and best of all, even though it’s close on midnight here, a nice warm bath! 🙂
(and wonder of wonders, I arrived home to my 17 yr old actually saying she had started the family laundry – at first I didn’t understand the words coming out of her mouth… omg, she’s actually noticed??!! triumph!!!)
my house is currently rather trashed. It really is about the down-and-dirty priorities, isn’t it? I know about Uncle Tupper. My dad passed away almost one year ago, and just recently my mom decided OK I AM READY SUDDENLY!!! Getting rid of clothes, half-finished projects, etc. I’ve been living out of a laundry basket, with long-ago started half-finished projects littering my house.
I took the afternoon off today, and July 3rd (pre-July 4th for the US) to try to deal with my mess and I’m drinking wine, surfing my favorite blogs and watching The Big Bang Theory.
A messy house, with no food, sans children. I don’t care.
You go girl. Sometimes the priority has to be mental health and inner strength. And a blind eye.

I agree with Presbytera, but also know that your bike riding in the morning helps a little with that process (I run during my grieving…rather a lot.)
And with the comments on delegation…even if it is just an element or two a day (today, A washes and puts away a couple of loads of laundry; B goes to store and buys a day’s worth of groceries; C cooks and cleans up…then rotate as needed.)
And more power to you on a beer in the afternoon. If I drink alcohol in the afternoon, it is nap time! ;-D

You know, you have highly bribable daughters and friends who would probably come scrub your kitchen from top to bottom in exchange for yarn or future favours. The rest of a trashed house is much easier to deal with when your kitchen is spotless.

In the book Earthing they recommend connecting more to the earth to de-stress. So when you are in the back with your laptop and knitting, barefeet will help you connect back to the earth. You also save time by not looking for shoes.
The Humber River! I read a book with my 10 year old son last year called Safe as Houses. It was about the 1954 flood of the Humber River. Incredible story! With all the flooding in Alberta we have been talking about that book. Funny that you should post a picture of the river for us to see. I’ll show him.

Two months from now who will remember or care how your house looks. You and your family’s generosity is way more important in the long run than less dust. In my sight as I write this is my Ladybug with fluff, a nearly completed shawl, and a sock on the needles. I also see my loving husband, and two dogs, in addition to bits of grass and a bit of dust. Love is what counts and you demonstrate that in all of your writîng I’ve read. So go easy on yourself and enjoy that. Beer!

Go visit a nursing home sometime and pay attention to what you see. Women sitting around with absolutely nothing to do. Everything is taken care of. Nothing needs to be done. Bored out of their minds.
I try to remember that when it feels like the water is rising all around me….remember to be GRATEFUL for having so much to do in my life. Because someday I may look back on this time and think “Those were really the days”.

I love my back deck. When I sit down out there I can’t see any of the things that need to be done, whether inside the house or outside(OMG the yardwork here!). Every house should have such a sitting area, and we all need to remember to use it. Thanks for that river view, too.

BTW, I’m sure among your knitter friends is one with a teen-aged daughter who needs a little bit of spending cash this summer and would like to help you clean your house. You’d be amazed how they can clean other peoples houses, but not their own. If you don’t find one, your house will wait until after the book is submitted. Messy doesn’t go anywhere, it just waits… Mine has been waiting for some time for me to overcome my permanent disability, ahem.

And as for the trashed house: Toronto is large enough that it should have a kinky sex-toy shop that sells cat-o’-nine-tails. If not, you can order them online. Use one on the hubby and daughter if/as needed. Too violent for you? Use gasoline and a match to take care of the trashed house. Get the best of the stash and knitting reference library out first. Hope and pray the arson investigators don’t figure it out.

So lots of other people had my first thought which is-get the hub and the daughter to deal with the house and that that should be expected and normal. Delegating? Yes. Asking for help? Nope. That’s too much like when male partners take care of the kids and call it babysitting as if they’re doing you a favor rather than their part. The second thought? Having a beer or glass of wine in the afternoon is one of the most decadent and civilized things I can think of. Go for it and have one for me while yer at it.
My house, too, looks like something exploded. It’s been unseasonably hot here in Seattle and we don’t do air conditioning, so being inside has been torture….much less moving around and picking things up, or doing dishes, or doing laundry, yes, the porch and the front yard are great, b/c you can ignore the rest.
I just got myself a cleaner house. I chose a few things that were really bugging me and told myself I’d just clean them. The piano finally got dusted!! I shredded all those credit card applications/old bills/etc. The stove hood is no longer dusty. Even though there’s still a ton to do, I smile when I walk past the piano. You’re doing great! I am so impressed by your bike mileage. I loved your description of the pelleton!
If nobody else in the house steps in to do something about the trash, it can not be that ugly. Teens who think they can live on their own should be wise enough to do some loads of sheets and towels in times of trash. I do understand Joe has a whole workload at the moment too, but taking empty bottles to their destiny also takes care of some trash. Look around you and decide what bothers you most, 9 out of 10 it is the kitchens state. Now, 10 minutes of elbow grease takes care of a whole lot of trash, if done frantically (think of beating up the C disease with every move), then Leave!, go sip the beer, knit a few rows and think about the booktext and stop feeling guilty. There are times to clean a house thoroughly and times there are more important things on the to-do-list. Now is the time for more important things, like taking care of yourself. I loved your Canadaday post and I realised that over here insurance-payment for medical care may take a hunk out of ones salary, but, when you need care, it is there and one does not need to fear bankruptcy because of it. Canada would be top of the list should I want to emigrate.
Sounds like a perfectly good plan to me, and I love the revelation that you can’t see the house from the back yard. Can’t help but mention the FlyLady, who can really help with CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome).
If you have guests over do as I do. I say: Do look at the mess, you’ll enjoy your own tidy home even more when you’re back.

No, I can’t see the inside of the house from here, either! Delegation of household tasks is a great way to get more done, if the family/roomies are at all ambitious or tidy. Unfortunately, mine are neither. I mentioned your Canada Day post to the Plaidman; we are so so tired of our (US) health system! Health care should not be seen as an opportunity to make money off sick folks. There’s no need for insurors and providers to make millions, they can get along just fine on a lot less. I think our health care is in one big d**n handbasket, headed straight to the Bad Place. Whew! Enough rant, please take care of yourself so you can care for those around you. I think it is aOK to have a trashed house. As long as it isn’t hoarders level or that you are trying to sell it, then frankly there are other people living in the house and they can attempt to wash a floor or do laundry too.

I’ve been laid up the last couple weeks with a broken ankle. My house was a mess, my foot was sore, my shoulders ached from the crutches and every dish in the house was dirty. Every dish. And someone (my husband) had started on the china, so I mean every dish.
I was whining and complaining to my mother about how stressful it was (I, too, can work anywhere I have an internet connection, so at least stuff that pays the bills was getting done but I was out in the back yard doing it so I didn’t have to look at the house… and the grass needed to be mowed).
My mother, bless her, showed up at my house and 2 hours later, the house was clean, the dishes were done, one kid was mowing the lawn, the other making dinner and she and I were sitting at the table drinking coffee… I love my mother.
She said “All you had to do was ask for help.”
*headdesk* I should know that by now.

Bon idea Steph! That’s what I do when I can’t stand the house any longer…go outside! Perfect. I must say that with an 18 month old and 4 weeks left in current pregnancy, I’m not sure my house will ever be clean again. I’m getting used to it.

Anyway, sounds like a perfectly sensible plan to me. And if the house bugs you, just remind yourself that you have a plan, and you’re working on the priority task, and the house isn’t it.

Sounds like an excellent plan to me. There are very good parts about stress in the summer :-). And you’re so right to remember that you only have to be good enough, and not gazelle-like in every way. Sometimes seeing actual gazelles can remind you of how futile the attempt may be, and weirdly that can help. I’m sure you’ll find once more that the gazelles are very happy to be riding with a mom :-).

A word of advice – you can’t compete with the gazelles – you either are one or not, or you may once have been one, but are not now. Other than that, no use worrying about them!

When I’m stressed I make lists — endless lists, house to do lists, shopping lists, work related lists, Knitting to be finished lists, but I like your idea better, knitting outside with a beer. That works.
Steph, it’s all about perspective, how you look at things and which glasses you are wearing (sunglasses, blinders, lined bifocals that make everything weird, rose-colored). Your perspective is spot on.
I understand that YOU have to write the book and YOU have to do the knitting, but why can’t YOU delegate some of the housework to other family members who also use the house?! There came a time in my life where I had to ease off some stuff and I told my kids and hubby I would no longer be doing their laundry and that if they needed lessons on how to do it themselves, I was available for consultation only. After two weeks of disbelief in my conviction, they relented and did their own laundry. Personally, I think the odors finally got to them! LOL! Kids and husbands can vacuum and dust, etc. just make sure you don’t critique their work or it might not ever get done again. Good luck Stephanie!

My philosophy about the house is this: clean enough kitchens for preparing uncontaminated food and sanitary bathrooms. Dust happens.
You are a very lucky woman. You can work and drink beer in your back yard without being eaten alive by mosquitos. Keep at it.
The house has an easy solution; hire someone to clean for a few hours. They can get the worst of the mess out of the way while you’re earning a living (in the garden).
If you’re anything like me, the thought of paying someone to do your dirty work causes the kind of guilt that should involve jail time. But this is an emergency situation, not a habit. If $60 of house cleaning would lower your stress levels enough to allow a corresponding increase in productivity, it would be worth it.
Now that’s my kinda office- this is definitely not “your mother’s” office! My how times have changed. I admire your training, and getting all the bases covered. Way to go!
Jennifer James, a noted columnist for the Seattle newspaper and a Cultural Anthropologist and motivational speaker once said “My priorities are people, animals, plants, things and dirt.” She was addressing her talk to an audience of parents of pre-schoolers including me, over 20 years ago and the philosophy still rings true for me!

Yes, grief takes a toll. The bike-riding is actually one good way to deal with that. Mostly, you have to wait it out….keeping busy is good. I needed a staggering amount of sleep.

About the house, there are other adults that live with you. You are not the only person who can clean, pick up things, and put them away.
Consider a cleaning lady. Then you have no more near house emergencies. Yes they cost money, but what is your stress costing you?

Well your plan, as countless before have stated is pretty great. Getting that ride in every AM will set up your day. All those endorphins will now be flowing through your system all day which in turn will crank up the creative juices (hence having a beer is essential) and of course knitting balances all. With new husband moving his stuff into my two bdm apt, I don’t see any surface that is not covered by boxes. Just keep kitchen and bath clean and sanitary and make a path for all else. can’t wait for new book!
I have a sign fixed to the side of a kitchen cupboard that says “Dull Women have Immaculate Homes.” It sustains me.
It has been a bad year for me (nowhere near the loss of your beloved Tupper but hard nevertheless) and I rediscovered the release of sitting on the patio in the shade listening to birds and reading a paperback only yesterday. That one hour of peace has me in a whole new mindset. I think your plan is BRILLIANT.

Love the backyard plan, wish it worked as well in Florida, but it’s just too darn hot. Yarn gets all sticky and tension gets all funky. Speaking of yarn….what are the socks made out of? Very pretty, and I’m always looking for self striping sock yarn. Hope the nice weather holds out for you.
