1. With my wool as my witness I meant to keep the good times rolling this week and totally nail another five days of blogging but I’m so close to the end of the book that I keep falling down that particular hole, and not really being able to climb out. It could be a lot worse – I’ve experienced manuscript endings where it’s almost impossible to climb into the hole and stay there even if I stood at the brink and threw myself in wholesale, so I’ll take this. Head down, working hard, it feels like I’m making a strong finish to a book I like a whole lot.
2. Knitting is happening here, although slowly, slowly. I’m knitting just enough to be sane, and I’ve been advised a few times in the last few days that I might want to up the dose. 
(Yes. I totally screwed with the foot length so that both the heel and toe would be purple. Yes, I totally think that’s normal. No. I don’t know who they will fit anymore.)
I can’t tell you how happy I would be to oblige. I’ve started a list on my desk of all the things I’m going to knit in a few weeks when the book and rally are over. It’s going to be a yarn party of epic proportions. It’s going to be the kind of knitting party where if it wasn’t a knitting party, someone would call the cops for a noise complaint. The kind of party where you find strangers asleep in your garden the next day. The kind of party where you have to keep telling your slightly berserk neighbour to keep putting his shirt back on and that you’re not into bongs. The kind of party where the next day, when you return all the empties, you can buy groceries with all the money. That sort of a knitting party my friends, and I can’t wait.
3. I have ice on my knees. I’ll tell you about the ride on Sunday tomorrow when my knees hurt less and my attitude is better. It rained.
4. It rained on Monday too, and thanks so much for the emails and tweets of concern. Yeah, it was wild. Completely wild. Around suppertime, the whole sky went black – like nighttime, and then the rain started, and Joe and I kept standing there looking at it saying over and over "I’ve never seen anything like it." It turns out we were right, there had never been anything like it. Never before. In just about an hour, Toronto got 129mm of rain (that’s about 5 inches, for my American friends.) There’s a great video here on the CBC if you want to see what happened. Our street got off pretty lucky, I had a wet basement, but not a flooded one, and we’ve had issues with the phone and power, and we’re still in the rolling blackout zone for today, because the power grid is too damaged to make enough right now. One of the hydro stations was under about 7 metres (20 feet) of water. Like most Torontonians (or at least the ones with a soul – don’t get me started on the young, fit, healthy guy down the street – his A/C is blasting and he’s not even home) we’re conserving as much power as we can to try and make it all go around. My sister’s restaurant flooded, but just the downstairs, she’s got ongoing power issues though, and my mum had water cascade in her side door and down to the basement, but not too much. Stoplights are still out, the subway is not quite all the way running again, some roads are still closed and it will be a while before Jen and I ride the Humber Trail again, on account of I’m not sure it’s still there (the rail is the side of the bike trail in that shot) but overall, we were lucky.
5. I’ve thought about going to the trail to look, but as long as the water is high and there’s rain in the forecast, I’m not going anywhere near the place. Those flash floods scared the crap out of me.
6. It is this time of year again. We are inundated. Anybody have a really, really easy solution? They’re Montmorency cherries, (those are sour ones) and the neighbours are stealing them, but not fast enough.

I was going to email you today to see if you survived the torent of rain; so glad to see a post. As to the cherries, I would gladly pay for you to mail me a big box!! I use them in pies and a french desasert called “Clafoute” (sp?) and can only get the sour ones in cans here in the suburbs for $5.00 per can! (don’t get me started on the price – until a year ago, they were $3 per can). If I order in bulk, I get them for $4 per can. yikes! If I ever have a house with a yard, I’m planting one of those trees….
My sour cherry tree just finished its fruiting. I pitted, bagged, then froze a lot for jam making in the winter. I also ran a bunch in the dehydrator for adding to oatmeal or cookies or whatnot later on.
Cherry syrup… then add bourbon or gin or well, whatever.
Easy solution for cherries: Pack them into a big jar and then fill with booze (brandy or bourbon are my favorites) and a bit of sugar. Soak for a couple weeks. Put in drinks or just eat straight out of the jar when you’ve had a rough day. Just make sure you remember that you didn’t pit them already 🙂
Cherry pie! The recipe at http://www.food.com/recipe/cherry-pie-4861 freezes pretty well – use the method where you put everything into a freezer bag and shake it, and then simply toss the bag actually into the freezer. When you’re ready to make the pie, just let it soften enough that you can empty the bag into a pie pan – if it thaws thoroughly the filling ends up runny.
Yarn party of epic proportions? I’m down. Will there be book signings in the U.S? Out here in California? Please? Those berries…very Christmas-y
I love the idea for boozy cherries (so much that I almost forgot how to spell cherries)…
Not that I have been through as much as you have this summer (and what I have been doing is fun stuff), but I could totally go for an epic yarn party that might even make the neighbors talk! And I have nearly a week of vacation time available. Where? When?
My best ideas for sour cherries would be to make jelly or syrup. No need to pit them, and they both use up a lot of fruit. The syrup would be nice on pancakes, or make it into a drink with some club soda (plus a bit of something stronger, if you like).
I’m envious you have a cherry tree in your yard! We can get them here in Wisconsin, and they are so good. They freeze excellently and make divine pies. Once I made some kind of Hungarian dessert soup with sour cherries and sour cream but danged if I can find the recipe. It was very tasty, though.

Hey! I’m glad you got through the flooding alright! I live in Calgary, and a lot of our city, and those further south of us (like High River) are in a lot harder spot than we are up here. I didn’t get flooded, because we’re up on a hill, but we had a friend who was evacuated that stayed with us, and my fiancee’s brother also got evacuated. I’m glad it didn’t turn into that for you and yours!!

I agree. Wash and freeze the cherries on a cookie sheet so they will be individually frozen. Then put them in a freezer bag and dole out all winter as per need. Remember the pits though.

We have sour cherry trees as well. This year hubby only picked a half-gallon size bag and for the first time we gave them over to the birds. Just not enough time to pick them and we have lots in the freezer still from last year. Actually, the bird fest is pretty good too. Lots of colorful birds fighting among the branches. Next the little critters will show up. 🙂 Hope it dries up there in Toronto soon for you. We’re flooded pretty good in Central Ohio too. Rain Rain Go Away already!!

Easy things to do with cherries (based on my Mum & Dad’s strategies to deal with the massive victoria plum harvest they get every 2-3 years):
Freeze them in 1kg lots. Pitted or unpitted (but bear in mind pitting squishy thawed fruit is very messy)
Jam.
Fruit fool (whipped heavy cream with a little sugar and a lot of stewed fruit puree, it’s as good as it sounds).
Cherry Jam.
Clafouti (pitted cherries in bottom of pie dish, pour over pancake batter (US style, not crepes), bake. Eat.
Did I mention jam?
I freeze pitted sour cherries with sugar and minute tapioca. Cherry pie whenever I want. (They never do freeze hard, but don’t worry.)
Dehydrated, they are the ultimate addition to oatmeal. Also cookies. And dried sour cherries cost a bazillion bucks if you buy them (assuming you can find them) – great savings. They shrink a lot, too, so if storage room is an issue, this is the way to go.
Glad to read your family survived the flooding. I wish we had a cherry tree. Usually the birds get the cherries first. Your readers have lots of good ideas; freezing, adding liquor! to them. I don’t drink but I like to eat my liquor! would be great on ice cream, vanilla yogurt.

Good to read that neither you nor your loved ones need water wings just yet. Dehydrate the cherries, they are killer in oatmeal cookies, scones, muffins, granola, yogurt, etc. And yes, boozy cherries are another excellent option.

Mmmm sour cherries! I’m still fighting with my container garden! Oh and the knee’s? Totally understand. I fell down the stairs of my house 2 days ago. Nothing broken,,, but the pain! Good thing for AC in the bedroom, knitting, DVD’s and Percocet! That’s where I’ll be!
I’ll second the call for cherry jam, and I’ll pass on a couple of pro-tips…get a food mill. Then you wash all the cherries, cook them with pits in, and run them through the food mills- result, pure cherry pulp with no pitting. Then you measure out the pulp into one-batch-of-jam quantities and freeze it. Then you actually make the jam when you have time. My mom makes jam and jelly as needed year round by freezing the fruit. And the food mill is also brilliant for making applesauce (no peeling or coring, just boil and sieve) and for purees of all sorts- getting the strings out of fresh squash to use in bread and pie is another good use.

You can can or freeze them for later use.
In any case, they’d have to be pitted first.
(My parents had one each of ‘Meteor’ and ‘North Star’, which are dwarf cherry trees.)
I found a cherry pitter a few years ago. I don’t have a tree, but it comes into use every summer when we buy cherries for munching. You can do four at once.
With regards to the sour cherries, mix them with about a cup of simple syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water, cooked until the sugar is completely integrated) and freeze with a bit of heavy cream and lemon juice in a popsicle maker. Delicious.
Dry the cherries. Bag the cherries. Sell the cherries. Get one or two of the girls and sit them down at a local farmers market to sell dried cherries to people who only wish they had cherry trees. Then the proceeds go to the Ride to sub anyone who isn’t qualified yet. At $5 a bag they will go like mad, and you can even ship me a couple of kilos because they will be wonderful.
I’m pretty sure that bags of dried cherries would be welcome gifts at the Christmas season. I’m thinking of them in seasonal cookies too. The problem will be to get enough help pitting them, what with the race and all.

I just made sour cherry liquor. Place in a quart-ish jar: 2 c. pitted sour cherries, 2 – 3 c. vodka, the pits from the cherries, pounded lightly with something so they are cracked but not pulverized. Soak for a week, gently shaking every day. After a week, strain the solids out of the liquid. Discard the solids. Place about 1 c. whole cherries in the liquid. Soak for another week. Add a simple syrup made with 3/4 c. water and 3/4 c. sugar. Ready to serve. Yum!
I remember the first time you knit socks from that yarn; you wouldn’t tell The Blog what it was because you were afraid we’d buy it all up before you could. ;o)
Luckily someone else figured it out and posted a comment and I got the yarn and made socks for me – I was going to say I didn’t try to match them, but it seems I did because I just pulled them out and they are perfectly matched.
Didn’t think of heels and toes in purple, though. Love that!
I hadn’t ever made socks when I bought the yarn, just knew I would someday. And I did!
Cold Sour Cherry Soup
Ingredients
3 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 cinnamon stick
4 cups pitted sour cherries
3/4 cup chilled red wine
Don’t bother pitting the cherries. Just spit them out. Throw everything into a 2 quart pan. Partially cover and simmer over low heat for 35-40 minutes. Take off the heat, cool, add wine, and chill. Serve with sour cream, if you want. Make as much as you can cuz it freezes well. You can have summer in winter if you have a ton of cherries.
Sour cherry mead – always a winner and the pits and great depth of flavor.
I totally second the suggestions for cherry liqueurs. I have some griotte (morello) liqueur I brought back from France and it is glorious stuff. (You can drink it neat, but it’s also good in cocktails with bourbon. By extension, might it be good mixed with Screech and drunk over ice?)
Basically, if you have cherries and no time, it’s a doddle to make. Take a reasonably flavour-free but smooth spirit (vodka, gin or rum) and put it in a big jar with the fruit so that’s it’s covered. You can add sugar syrup to sweeten it when you have time – sometimes it’s better to wait because you can assess better how much sugar to add and avoid over-sweetening. When the liqueur’s ready, you can eat boozy cherries over ice cream, or add them to another fruit and make chutney (apples would probably be good, apple and sour cherry chutney would probably be great with cheese).
I’m also going to try pickling redcurrants this year (also good with cheese, apparently). I’ve seen suggestions that this method can work with cherries too. The Diana Henry recipe I have (the lady is super-reliable) says…
900g cherries
900g granulated sugar
600ml white wine vinegar
1 small cinnamon stick
4 whole cloves
– Heat vinegar, sugar and spices until the sugar dissolves.
– Prick the cherries if you want them to stay intact. [I would stick them in the freezer until their skins burst because I am lazy.]
– Simmer the cherries in the sweet vinegar for about four minutes.
– Put the cherries in a sterilised jar.
– Boil the sweet vinegar until it’s syrupy, then ladle over the jarred fruit and seal.
Apparently these keep for a year. As far as I can see, your only problem is finding enough jars, or eating so many of them with so much cheese that there’s enormous weight gain…
Of course, if you have room in the freezer, you can pop them in there until you have time to think what to do with them. If they’re going to get cooked, noboy need know that they’ve been frozen.
Wait…you really don’t have a solution to the cherries? I do – send them to me! yeah, I know – a bit more extreme a solution than you hoped for. It was worth a try. I’d like to know how you’re able to grow those in Toronto when I can’t find cherries that will grow where I live in Vermont, though. So totally unfair.

I see pounds and pounds of those cherries in my wine press. I see lots of squeezing and pressing and cherry juice running out into buckets. I see sugar, raspberry juice, wine yeast, yeast nutrient, a little yeast energizer mixed in. I see a BIG glass jug with an airlock on top full of yummy redness going into my basement to ferment.
And in a week, I see it being strained and smelling really good. Then I see it in another glass bottle…sitting, sitting , sitting as the sediment goes to the bottom of the glass jug. 6 weeks later…WINE!!!!

Make brandied cherries! They keep forever and make AWESOME gifts. I pore the brandy over ice with club soda and it’s fabulous.
And, best part, all the alcohol means you don’t have to do a true canning. No boiling water or anything.

Our county here in central New York had the flash floods two weeks ago. My house is on a hill so we were fine but the next block (right near a small creek that turned into a raging river), one house was knocked off it’s foundation, one had it’s swimming pool and garage with a car in it slide across the street into the yard of another house that now has a yard of nothing but mud. My sister-in-law had 5 feet of water in her basement and so did a good portion of the rest of our village. It’s almost impossible to get from our house to anywhere in the village without encountering heavy machinery and closed roads. There are a lot of houses locally that have been condemned because of water damage and it’s really sad. I hope you don’t have any more flooding!
Montmorency! Those are so hard to get in California because of the chill hours they need; I had to settle for a sweet cherry tree. And in happy anticipation of next year’s hoped-for crop, my little plastic four-at-once cherry pitter actually came today.

Having been through an EPIC flood in 2008, I cringe every time I hear somewhere else has flooded. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone and I hope Toronto gets all the help you need to make a full recovery.
!!! Glad to hear you are all safe and sound! As for the cherries: jam, or pie? Or mixing them up with Cool Whip (put it in the freezer for about half an hour before you serve it. It’s like ice cream then 😀 ) and sugar? I did that with some super-tart fresh raspberries, and it made a delicious dessert. Stay safe, and as dry as you can!
I say freeze ’em on cookie sheets. Then when they’re frozen you can dump them into buckets for easier freezer storage.

Cherries: clafouti. Here’s Julia Child’s version http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/member/views/JULIA-CHILDS-CLAFOUTIS-1270672 the proportions seem right but really, she makes way too much of a fuss. Mix the wet stuff together. Make a well in the flour (add dry stufff) and stir in the wet stuff, not stirring too much. Just throw the cherries in the bottom of the (buttered) pan and toss the batter on top. My grandmother says not pitting the cherries keep the juices inside and makes the whole thing better, and I heartily agree (saves half an hour too). Yum yum.
Cherry “soup”:
1 part cherries, 2 parts water, 1/2 part sweetener, stick cinnamon, a few thin slices of lemon
bring to boil, stirring to dissolve sugar, boil for 8 minutes; turn down heat and simmer for another 8 minutes; chill overnight; enjoy.
I also have c. 3 lbs of pitted cherries in the freezer for pie this winter.
Seriously, just send the cherries to me. I want to make sour cherry soup — that stuff is sublime.
Re the cherries: easy solution: will the local food bank take them or soup kitchen for pies? Some will-some won’t.
Or..make cherry liquer -takes a lot to make a little.
Or…you can ship them to me- cherries are $7 a lb here in Alaska!
Put a challenge out to A & B: for every knitter that donates, that x amount of time they have to spend learning to knit…then they can make hats for hiv/aids patients.
Boozy (and sweetened) cherries also make a great filling for a Black Forest cake! Just think: chocolate, cherries, alcohol, and whipped cream . . .(you’re salivating, aren’t you?)
I saw coverage of the storm, and it reminded me of a storm we had in Chicago when I was a teen. One of my uncles lost power during the storm, and his basement flooded very badly. I forget how much water there was, but his commercial-type pool table floated high enough to turn over because the slate bed weighed more than the legs, etc., underneath it! Glad to hear you and yours haven’t had experienced anything quite that bad!
For the cherries – do you know anybody who brews beer? We’ve made a delicious blonde ale with cherries a few times in the last couple of years – half sour, half sweet cherries, cooked a bit to kill any nasties and then thrown into the secondary fermentation, pits & all. Yummmmm.

There is a reason that we bit the financial bullet and put in a whole-house, natural-gas-powered generator a few years ago. We’re not that far out in the boonies but it is rather rural, and because of how the area developed, we’re in this funny pocket where our neighborhood is always the last to get our power back, because the number affected is small – unless it is you.
We’ve had periods (both before and after generator installation) where we’ve had no power for up to 11 days, and since the generator was installed we’ve had it run continuously for more than a week on 4 occasions.
