Rhinebeck Eve

I’m off to Webs to play with knitters for the morning (can I just say one thing about Webs? They’re terrific, and really, I know that the excellent experience I have there every time is because Steve and Kathy are great, and they treat their staff great and then the staff treat the customers great and… I just love it there. Everything about it. I’m so grateful to know them.) Then it’s into the car, and up the Rhinebeck for my favourite holiday of the year.  My sweater isn’t done but it’s almost done, and it’s even the kind of almost done that means I should take other knitting in the car for the trip. It’s like a Rhinebeck miracle.

I can’t take these – my lost and found socks.  I was going to link to the yarn, but it turns out that the business is finished (for the best of reasons, the owner’s having a baby) and this great  yarn is no more. If you want to hunt it in the wild, it’s DeKay Duet, from A Swell Yarn Shop.

and maybe someday it will be back, but in the mean time, on this, the eve of a knitters holiday and a big yarn opportunity, let this be a lesson to you.

This is why we have stash.

See you at Rhinebeck, and if you can’t be there, I’m sorry.  I’ll think of you, and pat a sheep in your name – and you can always watch Gale Zucker’s fabulous Rhinebeck Style video. It just about made me cry, and I have no idea why.

  1. Enjoy Rhinebeck! I’ll be here in the Midwest cheering for all those that get to go.
I was weeping during Gayle’s video, too. All those happy people caught in a wonderful moment in time. Loved it!

  2. I totally agree with the first commenter: Gorgeous socks, and so jealous of your Webs/Rhinebeck trip. I also agree that we’re really looking forward to seeing that sweater! Honestly, the two of us agree so much that it’s quite ridiculous!

  3. Lovely sockies – I have a sudden craving for Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream.
And now for my second act, I am going to play troublemaker……you do realize that they don’t EXACTLY-EXACTLY-TO THE STITCH match, right? Are rigid standards slipping in McPhee-land?! >:-)

  4. I live very close to Rhinebeck, but we aren’t going this year. We have pledged to start a “Rhinebeck Money” jar for next year. Have a great time!

  5. We cried because it is just so awesome to see the joy on all those people’s faces and know they are OUR people, that we are a part of something that big, and beautiful, and wonderful.
Hope to see you on the fairgrounds; meant to bring one of your books to see if you’d autograph it for me, but I forgot to pack it, so will simply just smile and say hi if I see you. Better than Christmas, this fells!

  6. By hook or by crook I am getting to Rhinebeck next year! This year has been a challenging one so I am not able to go; working like a dog just to stay in place is what this year has been about for all of us.
It looks so wonderful, and all that wonderful knitting! Plus fibre, and fibre animals, and all those lovely knitters. I’ve never been that far east and I am sure New York is delightful this time of year.
Dang – now I have to plan a sweater; and I almost never knit for myself, other than hats mitts and scarves. (Oh, that’s SUCH a punishment……)

  7. Pat a sheep for me too. If we were still furloughed I was thinking of taking a quickie road trip, but now that we’re back in business I’ll just wait for MD S&W. Happy hunting!

  8. Pat a sheep for me, please. Last year was Taos, and that means this year was going to be Rhinebeck, except that the universe has a sense of humour and my new son is not quite 8 weeks old. Maybe next year!

  9. You just made my life awesome! We were invited to a wedding which took place last weekend. For some reason, when I got the invitation, I thought it was the same weekend as Rhinebeck weekend, so I just figured I wouldn’t be able to go this year. I just saw this blog post and thought, “huh???” Then I realized, it’s the third week in October!! I don’t know why I didn’t check the dates, I just assumed! I just called my mother and husband, and told them the good news!! I’m able to make it after all!! I haven’t planned anything yet! I better get started!! I need to get my yarn requirements planned, figure out which booths to go to first!! I’m so excited!!!!! The Yarn Harlot makes life awesome!!

  10. I am SO psyched for Rhinebeck this year 🙂 We almost didn’t get to go, but at the last minute, a miracle happened, and we’re going. And I promise we won’t corner you and shout “Stephanie!” really loudly to get your attention this year 😉
    (Canadians. Mostly harmless!)

  11. It almost made you cry because its so beautiful and celebratory and sweet and touching and joyful and fun! every year, I dream of attending… one day I will retire and then I’ll be first in line on opening day. In the meantime, please post lost of pics!! (and patting a sheep for me would also be appreciated)

  12. As I started to check my ” blogger dashboard” I thought, no one will be blogging, they’re all at Rhinebeck, so your entry was appreciated. Rhinebeck sounds like so much fun. Have enough for me, too. Maybe one year I’ll make Rhinebeck. Until then I will enjoy our small local fiber fest next weekend (Ann Arbor Fiber Fest).

  13. Had thoughts of a possible trip to Rhinebeck this year, but the thoughts never got to any planning stage, so here I am still in Maryland with other plans for this weekend. 🙁
Next year, will need to plan to change those thoughts into actions!

  14. Say “HELLO” to Barbara F., Dee S., and Jean C. who have made the trek to Rhinebeck as well. I am wishing all of you the same fabulous weather we had last year…and lots of apples and apple pie!

  15. Pat a sheep for me too? I live in the UK and alas, may not fly over for Rhinebeck, which makes me sad… I shall have to enjoy it through you – post lots of pictures!!! 🙂

  16. Lucky you! You got to find a great project half done that you thought was lost and go to Rhinebeck AND WEBS.
Also impressed with the recent baby blanket. Love the stitches you used. Even more impressed with the baby. Congratulations to the parents.

  17. Allow me to second the utter coolness and niceness of the folks at Webs. I get there a few times a year, and it’s always a delight.
Someday I shall go to Rhinebeck. But it would not be wise while my stash is at its current size.

  18. I don’t get to go this year. The bus trip I would normally take is going on Sunday and I’ll be running my feet off at a half marathon on Sunday. Alas, I wouldn’t have gone if the bus trip went Saturday; I did that last year (and did the half on Sunday) and nearly wrecked my knee for all the stop-and-start walking I did at Rhinebeck. One day I’ll stop running, or the race organizers will see how conflicted I am between my two passions, and then I can enjoy Rhinebeck again. Have a GREAT time! The weather looks to be perfect!! Sigh…

  19. GAH!!!! You are getting so much knitting done! I am so jealous. I want to finish some projects. I am stuck in sweater doldrums and only knit about 2-4 rows in the evening before I get tired of knitting. Been thinking about casting on a small hat project or something but I feel kind of bad about that when I have this sweater on the needles. I might do it anyway. Yay for Rhinebeck! One of these days I will go too. 🙂

  20. Travel safe Stephanie! I’m another in line to have you pat a sheep for me, I can’t go to Rhinebeck either. I am opening a fund for it for next year or the year after. I want to go before I turn 50. My birthday is on October 23, so it would be an excellent gift. Might put an order in at Webs in solidarity with my knitting brothers and sisters. Looking forward to the after report.

  21. Sooo jealous but glad you get to go to Webs and Rhinebeck. Thanks for the link to the video. I had a big, big smile through my tears and I so needed that. Could you hug a llama for me?

  22. I just had to say hello! I just found your blog on Wednesday ( I know, I’m a little slow, but when I catch on – look out!!) I have really enjoyed catching up on your adventures – both knitting AND ‘other’. You make me laugh, think and pick up my needles. Thanks for sharing your stories and inspiring me again!

  23. And this, my friend, is why I’ve been hoarding A Swell Yarn Shop yarn for years. That, and the owner is a very good friend. 🙂

  24. I will be at Rhinebeck on Sunday! I almost didn’t go this year, as Saturday will be a busy and late night (Marching Band State Championships for my daughter), but all my non-knitting friends think I should go. Who am I to argue?

  25. Never a better reason for stash then this… I am dying for that yarn combo. Which begs the question – why don’t more yarn companies sell in “duets” with contrasting color, small amount of yarn for heels/toes? It’s genius. I think you made another pair of socks a long time ago in a similar brown/pink duet yarn, right?
Pet a sheep for me. I’ve never been – so next year is IT!

  26. Ok, that video was the best, and I know why it almost made you cry — because it’s YOUR (our) people, all wrapped in such woolly goodness. I loved it!!!

  27. Yes, Please pat a sheep (or goat.. or llama or alpaca) for me too. Hope to make it there some year, but this wasn’t the year for me. I loved the video too. why I might have to make a sweater and wear 2-3 shawls, cowls, hats/wristers. Very inspiring and everyone looks so darned happy. What more could you want.

  28. Beautiful socks! Have a great time at Rhinebeck and glad you got to go to Webs–both on my someday list. (It doesn’t help that my East Coast kid is moving this week to Alaska. What on earth does one knit for living in Alaska.)

  29. And just like that, it’s Fall. I can feel the crisp air, hear the crinkle of the leaves. And all that woolie goodness to cuddle into.
Next year in Rhinebeck. Now there’s a goal.

  30. Rhinebeck is also my favorite holiday..along with my biannual trip to Webs. Lucky Stephanie, you get to go to both in one weekend!

  31. Me too! – I’ll add myself to the list of next year at Rhinebeck (and WEBS)! And since I’m looking for somewhere to retire in a couple of years, Rhinebeck might be a possibility for that too…hhmmmm. Show us lots of photos, Steph!

  32. Sitting here at WEBS, having just taken your class. Thank you so much for making the trip! Enjoy Rhinebeck, see you there!

  33. Love the socks and they remind me, too, of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream! And call me slow but I glanced at the pic from yesterday’s post and noticed that you wear a Claddagh ring. So do I. :).

  34. I have a confession to make. I was SO CONFUSED when you said you couldn’t take your lost and found socks to Rhinebeck. After all, they are done and so of course you can take them and wear them and . . . Then I realized that you meant you can’t take them as a KNITTING project in the car. Duh!

  35. Love the socks – I had looked to try to find the yarn, and yes, it is only out there in lucky people’s stashes… oh, well.
And the video does bring a tear to the eye – I’m seriously thinking that I need to go to Rhinebeck. Need. Need desperately. Must.
    Destiny…

  36. Yes, please pat a sheep for me and ogle some wool. I’ll be thinking about Rhinebeck from the other side of a big ocean – and the gorgeous colors, from both inside and outside. (Fall as New England knows it doesn’t happen here in the south of Portugal.Rhinebeck does it so well! I miss the fall, but admittedly, not the winter!)

  37. Hooray for finishing the baby blanket and the lost socks! I am reporting that the baby sweater is all done except for ends and buttons, and blocking, and baby neighbour is only two weeks old! It will still fit! 🙂 Have a great time at Rhinebeck!

  38. No Rhinebeck for me, for a bunch of reasons, so I will take that sheep pat!
The video … I think it’s all those beautiful smiles. So much happiness is likely to overflow.

  39. Have fun at Rhinebeck with all your buddies. What a happy looking group of knitters you were today. I was one of the guinea pigs for your preventing/fixing mistakes class this morning at WEBS. It was great fun and very informative too. Thanks for sharing with us.

  40. It kills me that you knit so fast. I’m working on a pair of mittens and they’ve taken me a week and a half. At this rate, I’ll have half a mitten ready for Christmas! LOL. Have fun at Rhinebeck!

  41. Safe travels! Plans couldn’t work out for Rhinebeck for me – can I take you upon your offer to pat a sheep for me?? Thank them for the wonderful wool 🙂

  42. The socks look great! I’m sure you’ll get compliments on them when you wear them.
And, I can just imagine your checklist for this weekend:
    1. Pack Space Bags, new green sweater, and new project. Find bra, make sure it’s clean.
    2. Buy yarn at WEBS. Have them ship it home.
    3. At night, store bra in purse.
    4. At Rhinebeck, try to show some restraint. Yeah, right. Buy yarn, use Space Bags to compress it enough to fit in car.
    5. At night, store bra in purse. To make things interesting, put bra and purse in the hotel room’s safe or minifridge.
    6. Day 2 of Rhinebeck. Rent U-Haul or Ryder truck with car trailer in order to get all that yarn, fiber, fleeces, books, patterns, etc. (maybe a sheep or alpaca or two?) home.
    7. Before going home, find bra. Go to UPS place to ship home all the stuff that won’t fit in car and rented truck. Figure out how to tell Sam that she needs to move in with one of her sisters because you need her bedroom for all the new stash.

  43. Will be at Rhinebeck on Sunday, if all goes well. I still have yarn in my stash from almost every year since 2005! Not to mention my last month’s trip to WEBS. Oh , and I also work in a yarn shop! I think that I might have a problem…

  44. I loved Gail’s video. The only problem is that now I am bouncing all over the Internet trying to find the patterns to some of the objects she shows. No links or names to anything, so good luck. I am crazy about the skeleton cowl that only reveals it’s true nature when pulled up. Gotta make that!
    Julie

  45. Have fun at Rhinebeck. When I retire I’m going to travel the worlds fibre festivals (and ship all the yarn home!)
I was thinking we haven’t heard about the long range planning box this year? Is it really worrying that I’m worrying about your long range planning box when I don’t even have one?

  46. I love Duet sock yarn. I must confess to pulling out all my Duet stash and petting it when I realised the owner was closing up. Indeed, yes, we need stashes…..

  47. Silly me — I envisioned a fiberista version of “Gangnam Style” — “Ohhhhhhhh, knitting ladies! . . . ”
See what wool fumes do to the aging brain?
I second the Rhinebeck/Webs bucket list; meanwhile, dear Stephanie, please pet an alpaca on my behalf.

  48. My husband walked by and said “Did that say ‘Rhinebeck’?!” He’s a fan of the aerodrome.
Great video for conveying the mood, but it goes so fast so can’t see the knitting!
    Pat

  49. I didn’t get to go to Rhinebeck, but I got a new granddaughter in Wisconsin at 3:19 this morning. She is being wrapped in the blanket I knit for her. I win.

  50. I had the exact same reaction to that video. I’m not sure if it was an emotional response to all the great knitted items or knitters.

  51. Went to Rhinebeck!!!! Got 14 pounds of fleece and had it sent to Zeilinger Wool Co to have it made into combed top!!
Then I walked and walked and walked; took videos of kangaroos and ring tailed lemers. Ate French fries and talked and talked and talked to everyone…especially spinners! What a great day! If you have not been to Rhinebeck, save up, take time off, AND GET THERE!!

  52. I loved that video, thank you for sharing – now I’m just going to have to go and sit through it frame by frame to cross reference a little Rav searching on some of my favourite knits!

  53. I have also done a bit of freeze framing. I love (but would never finish!) the owl and the pussycat dress and the little girl in the green short sleeved dress.

  54. I’m sort of glad I don’t know anything about Rhinebeck because then I would have to feel sad about not going. I just wanted to say how much I love that color combination. Before there was Cherry Garcia, we had Neopolitan ice cream, and that’s what it reminds me of. Love the chocolate heels!

  55. Hi there, You’ve done a fantastic job. I’ll definitely
digg it and personally recommend to my friends. I am
sure they’ll be benefited from this web site.

  56. So love your socks!!! And I’m glad you found them in time to finish for Rhinebeck. And on a semi-related note, I have to thank you for turning me on to Dream in Colour Smooshy. I got a skein a couple weeks ago at my LYS (Yarn Garden)and oh. My. God. Completely worth it. And pet a Llama for us knitters stuck in Carlisle, Pennsylvania!

  57. I was a Rhinebeck ho! I looked for you but never found you. The show is fantastic and it’s my goal to go every year. I patted sheep, alpaca, and baby alpaca, cashmere goats, and lots of others. I saw some beautiful yarns, needles and other implements of knit-struction and just loved it all! I’m sorry I missed you though. 🙁

  58. I saw you in the vendor area at Rhinebeck, talking with Clara Parker. I was a mess. I didn’t have the courage to introduce myself, I just hovered around like a deranged stalker thinking to myself “OMG OMG OMG I’M HERE RIGHT NEXT TO THE YARN HARLOT!!!!”
I’m really not dangerous, even without meds, but you should probably travel with and entourage to protect you from socially inept fan girl knitter/spinners like me.

  59. If we don’t get a picture of a cute lamb or fuzzy fleece pretty soon, it’s going to get ugly here. Radio silence too long. Just saying.

  60. Ordering from WEBS is always a great experience. Not just the discount, but the great selection, the way they have their inventory tied into the page so that it lists exactly how many skeins they have of which color, and there have been a few times I’ve had to contact them about something and their response has always been top notch.
WEBS has been the first place I go when shopping for yarn online for years. Some day I would love to visit it, but I think I would probably get overemotional and excited and weird them all out.

  61. …???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  62. Your socks are beautiful, your green sweater is gorgeous. I hope you had a great time at Rhinebeck.
I am sorry I didn’t get to see you this time around.
As a follow-up to the story I told you in the car in the Finger Lakes, we got through the weekend more than ok. Everything went smoothly. Kay’s husband even began dyeing a little bit of yarn.
I wish you all the best for your trip home, and hopefully some day we will meet up again.
    You never know. 🙂

  63. I was about to tell you that I’vemissed your posts this week but after looking at the comments, I’m wondering if you are having computer ‘issues’. I hope you find a way to block those spammers soon!

  64. I like the valuable information you provide in
your articles. I’ll bookmark your blog and check again here frequently.
I’m quite sure I will learn many new stuff right here!
    Good luck for the next!

  65. I simply want to mention I’m all new to blogging and site-building and truly loved this blog site. Almost certainly I’m planning to bookmark your blog . You surely have terrific posts. Thanks a bunch for sharing with us your website page.

  66. I just want to mention I am just newbie to blogging and site-building and seriously savored you’re web site. Probably I’m want to bookmark your blog . You definitely come with really good writings. Appreciate it for sharing with us your web page.

  67. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  68. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  69. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  70. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  71. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  74. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  76. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  77. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  83. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  92. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  93. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. 95.

  98. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  105. I conducted in which since i have locate necessary it really is to gain access to your aching position fast subsequently needs to be mark spots to ensure that you decrease a posture. Possibilities for people rise for yourself firm have already been enormous really can be expensive.

  110. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
