WITH the black!
Posted by carol at December 2, 2011 1:13 PMGorgeous, but I think the black makes the colours sing!
is it odd that I've just started a gift blanket for Christmas?
Kira
Posted by Kira at December 2, 2011 1:13 PMI say go with the black in the background!
Posted by Jill at December 2, 2011 1:15 PMI like it without the black throughout - only as the border. I like the colors playing together without the "control" of the black.
Posted by Nancy at December 2, 2011 1:15 PMWithout. With, and it looks like PacMan. Sort of.
Posted by Austin Val at December 2, 2011 1:15 PMI like the one with the black!
Posted by Courtney at December 2, 2011 1:16 PMI love them both! I guess it depends on the "look" you're going for...to me the one with black looks a little more "retro" and the one without, more modern. But that's just me. So what is it going to be, mittens?
Posted by Violet at December 2, 2011 1:16 PMI'm torn between the two:
The black really shows the colors with definition and does remind me of stained glass windows.
The non-black gently meanders the colors, giving a color shifting that I *really* love.
Uhm...flip a coin?
Posted by Joe B. at December 2, 2011 1:17 PMwith black for sure
Posted by shelda at December 2, 2011 1:17 PMI LOVE it with the black. It makes the other colors pop out at you.
Posted by Betsy at December 2, 2011 1:17 PMDefinitely with the black.
Posted by GeniaKnitz at December 2, 2011 1:17 PMI LOVE it with the black. It makes the other colors pop out at you.
Posted by Betsy at December 2, 2011 1:17 PMI LOVE it with the black. It makes the other colors pop out at you.
Posted by Betsy at December 2, 2011 1:18 PMWith the black, for sure. And thanks so much for the great tips!!!!
Posted by Aileen at December 2, 2011 1:18 PMI like them both, but prefer the one with the black.
Posted by Jan at December 2, 2011 1:19 PMBlack, definitely! And are these mittens? I want to make them too!
Posted by Christine at December 2, 2011 1:19 PMWITH the black, definitely. I love that "stained glass" look!!
Posted by Jan at December 2, 2011 1:20 PMI'm not a big fan of black yarn...but I'm voting for the one with the black, because I think it allows each color to be itself...and I'm all about that.
Posted by Sarah at December 2, 2011 1:20 PMI think without looks better. I thinkt eh motif is too small for the stained glass effect to work really well.
Posted by Elinor at December 2, 2011 1:22 PMGo for the one without the black. Love all the color. makes you feel happy.
Posted by lydia at December 2, 2011 1:23 PMWith black but rainbowed.
Posted by Pearl at December 2, 2011 1:24 PMAlthough I am not usually a fan of black in any form I love the definition that the black offers.
Posted by lorraine at December 2, 2011 1:24 PMWith the black, definitely with the black. Much more interesting that way.
(So, December 2nd... how close are we to The Famous Schedule?)
Posted by Jack at December 2, 2011 1:24 PMLove them both, but would actually wear the one without the black. Hope this continues to gestate nicely!
If other knitters are like me, your blog is being copied and pasted into a daily email to at least one person who buys gifts for a knitting person.
with the black, for sure.
Posted by bekala at December 2, 2011 1:25 PMWith black.
Posted by Lorraine Smith at December 2, 2011 1:25 PMI'm with most of the others: WITH
Posted by Leslie at December 2, 2011 1:27 PM"...and by last night I had convinced myself that the idea had Christmas present merit, and could therefore be indulged. I'm going to let the idea sprout and be swatched for 48 hours, and then retire it, unless it's paid off the way I think it might." Wiping my eyes here, rereading and going off again. It's the thin candy shell of reason over the deep, chewy core of compulsion I like best, I think.
Posted by rams at December 2, 2011 1:28 PMI'm visually drawn to the one in the top photo.
Posted by pamela at December 2, 2011 1:29 PMWith black is very striking.
W/O black reminds me more of Granny Squares.
Both have merit. Which knits faster?
Posted by Andrea in Kansas at December 2, 2011 1:30 PMDefinitely without - the individual spots surrounded by black looks .... ordinary. Like something I could find at the mall. Lovely, but rather common. No offense intended - I'm sure either will be fine.
BTW, just snagged the latest NY Times bestseller by the Yarn Harlot. (It's been quite a search here in PA without going online). Can't wait to get home tonight and dive in. Congrats!
Posted by Knitsiam at December 2, 2011 1:30 PMI prefer the with black as well. I think the other risks being too muddied.
Posted by Tara K at December 2, 2011 1:30 PMI'd be grateful the project that may/may not be didn't show up with a dead rodent to persuade you to quit ignoring it.
My vote: without the black.
Posted by roggey at December 2, 2011 1:30 PMI like the black if it's for a garment and the unblack if it's going to be a tea cozy or knitted ball ornament.
Posted by AnnaPiranha at December 2, 2011 1:31 PMDefinitely WITH the black.
Posted by Sheri at December 2, 2011 1:31 PMUnless you are making 2 of whatever that is, use the black.
Posted by Alex at December 2, 2011 1:32 PMI vote with the black!
Posted by Suzie at December 2, 2011 1:32 PMWITH the black. Makes it zing!
Posted by Sarah JS at December 2, 2011 1:32 PMMy personal preference would be the one with the black but the one without allows the colors to flow much better. Love your blog!
Posted by Erica J at December 2, 2011 1:33 PMWith black! When I saw all those colors wound up I thought, "looks like class at Port Ludlow!"
Posted by shelly at December 2, 2011 1:33 PMI also like them both but prefer the one without the black. Those are happy colors and they want to play together!
Also, Rams at 1:28 - You nailed it!
Posted by Colleen in Kansas at December 2, 2011 1:33 PMBoth are pretty, but the black is much more striking. Have fun!
Posted by Patty at December 2, 2011 1:33 PMHi Steph!
Definitely colours with black - i like the stained glass look as well!!
Posted by Melissa in Fairbanks at December 2, 2011 1:34 PMLove it with the black! Bet with the colours you've chosen it would even look spectacular with a deep, chocolate brown. (Not to complicate things...)
Posted by StitchyAlli at December 2, 2011 1:35 PMDefinitely love the one with black, although both are beautiful.
They are both great, but I'm drawn to the one without the black. That would be my preference, I think.
Posted by Cindy at December 2, 2011 1:36 PMDefinitely love the one with black, although both are beautiful.
Black, definitely black.
Posted by Cathy at December 2, 2011 1:36 PMI prefer it without the black. Without is more bargello-y and with is more polka dot-y.
Posted by Nicola at December 2, 2011 1:36 PMWith the black. But you know that already don't you ;-)
Posted by Helen at December 2, 2011 1:37 PMWhile they are both lovely, I like the one with the black background. Makes the colors POP! And that's how you do it!
Posted by Mya at December 2, 2011 1:37 PMlove it WITH the black!!
Posted by melissa p. at December 2, 2011 1:37 PMWith the black, definitely. Without is lovely too, but my eye is drawn back to the stained glass effect.
Posted by woolmix at December 2, 2011 1:37 PMThe colors "pop" more with the black background. Go with the black option! Also, the pic with all the yarns wound up? ::thumbs up!:: Yarn in it's most simpliest state. So full of potential.
Posted by Kelly K. at December 2, 2011 1:38 PMI like the way the yellow, orange, and red play with each other--without the black.
Posted by bluesbee at December 2, 2011 1:39 PMI think that without the black makes the colors look like fall leaves in a pile and I like that. It makes winter go away.
Posted by lynne at December 2, 2011 1:39 PMMost definitely without the black.
Posted by Sue at December 2, 2011 1:39 PMIt's got to be the black!
Posted by Jane at December 2, 2011 1:41 PMI didn't like the "swatches are for babies" pin on Etsy. Especially in light of your post today, I think we need "swatches are for babes".
By the way, I have no vote because I can not decide.
What would happen with a deep gray, like solder with oxidation, instead of black? Curious about that.
Posted by Lorilee at December 2, 2011 1:42 PMlove both -- but with black
Posted by Donna at December 2, 2011 1:43 PMWith black!
I like it with the black; so far, it looks like fall leaves on the sidewalk.
Posted by Mary K. in Rockport at December 2, 2011 1:44 PMYou know that 50% of us will say "with black" and 50% will say "without black", don't you?
I vote without black, just in case it really matters.
With the black, absolutely!
Posted by susan at December 2, 2011 1:45 PMWith the black, deinitely. Also, I am stealing your motif, and maybe even the color scheme, for purposes of my own.
Posted by Mary at December 2, 2011 1:45 PMWith the black of course!!
Posted by Sharon in Surrey at December 2, 2011 1:46 PMWith the black! Love it!!
And thanks for the Xmas gift ideas! I've directed my muggle to read your blog for ideas!
Posted by FlannelJammies at December 2, 2011 1:46 PMWith the black!
Posted by Evelyn at December 2, 2011 1:47 PMI vote for with the black -- I love the stained glass effect.
Posted by Trikisto at December 2, 2011 1:48 PMI vote for with the black. It makes the colors pop!
Posted by Kathy at December 2, 2011 1:48 PMW/O black. But you should really go with the one you really like.
Posted by Leta at December 2, 2011 1:48 PMHmm, no, definitely not the black, I find it's a bit harsh, too much contrast. Maybe with a dark brown instead? But I think I still prefer without - the shape that each colour makes is nice, more flowy, should make your hand look longer?
Posted by Sarah at December 2, 2011 1:49 PMI personally like the version with the black as a swatch, but without knowing what it will become, it's hard to say what version would work better for your intended application (can you tell I'm an engineer?). For example, I think the version with the black works better for cuffs than the version without, but the version without black would be better as the yoke of a sweater than the version with black. But if you're making a blanket, then that's something else entirely!
Posted by Karen C at December 2, 2011 1:49 PMI would vote for without the black...I like the way the colors melt into each other without the harshness of the black between. They seem so much more vivid. Just my opinion though. Lovely colors!! I can't wait to see what it looks like with all of the others added in...whatever it is you are making.
Posted by Chris at December 2, 2011 1:50 PMDefinitely without black.
Posted by Georgia at December 2, 2011 1:50 PMAbsolutely with the black ...
x
With the black!
Posted by Heather at December 2, 2011 1:52 PMWith Black. I love the way the black makes the colours really pop.
Posted by Naomi aka Crystal Belle at December 2, 2011 1:53 PMWith Black. I love the way the black makes the colours really pop.
Posted by Naomi aka Crystal Belle at December 2, 2011 1:53 PMLooks like it's going about 50/50. But here's something to think about--what's the fiber? If it's cotton, no black. If it's wool, with black. At least that's my opinion.
Posted by kim at December 2, 2011 1:53 PMI prefer without the black. Love those colors!!
Posted by Rachel Gogan at December 2, 2011 1:55 PMSans black. Definitely.
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 1:56 PMThe first two photos on your post, I liked the sans black the best. The second two photos I liked the swatch with the black the best. In the interest of fairness, I think I must disqualify my promiscuous yarn heart from voting :(
Posted by Cheryl at December 2, 2011 1:56 PMWith the black.
Posted by Heather at December 2, 2011 1:56 PMWell, I like them both, but the one without the black in between really sings, in my opinion (which is sometimes more humble than others). That's the one I would choose. I love those colors!
Posted by Elizabeth at December 2, 2011 1:57 PMDefinitely prefer the one with the black, it makes the color pop more and makes the changes more interesting.
Posted by Kay at December 2, 2011 1:57 PMWithout.
Posted by kashurst at December 2, 2011 1:58 PMWith the black, definitely. I have one of those unisex buttons (I ate your grandma's knitting for lunch and it was crunchy). I get lots of compliments!
Posted by Beth at December 2, 2011 1:59 PMuse the black
Posted by Maureen at December 2, 2011 1:59 PMWITHOUT is better in my mind. I think the black kind of makes it look dated. I like the bright colors touching each other in that fabulous way contrasting colors do! Can't wait to see what you intend it for!
Posted by karen in ID at December 2, 2011 2:00 PMI prefer the one without the black.
Posted by Cathy at December 2, 2011 2:00 PMCan't believe I'm going to say without the black. I almost always like the stain glass look better, but in this case I like it better without! Go figure!
Posted by Sheri at December 2, 2011 2:01 PMI like it without the black. It looks like flames.
With the black makes it look too much like little buttony dots/circles. Almost like that candy that you get on paper....not that it isn't appealing.
Posted by Katie at December 2, 2011 2:01 PMWith the black definitely. Your gift guide is a wonderful enabler. Can't wait for tomorrow.
Posted by Holli at December 2, 2011 2:01 PMWITH the black!
Posted by Mary at December 2, 2011 2:02 PMI vote for with the black! I think it makes the pattern look like colorful honeycomb. :D
Posted by Charlotte at December 2, 2011 2:02 PMWithout
Posted by Kelly V at December 2, 2011 2:02 PMYes, definitely with the black! (Even though I feel like saying the other one, just to be different!)
Posted by Kate at December 2, 2011 2:02 PMWithout the black, please. It looks like firelight, flames. Warmth.
With the black it seems to have too much contrast. Having said that, you have given me a great idea!! Thanks!
Love the black! Both are great, but I think the black cranks the design up a notch!
Posted by Judy at December 2, 2011 2:03 PMMy vote would be without.
The main reason is that I adore colorwork that flows. I like flowing colors. Is naice. But, the stained glass look is also gorgeous, it really depends on what it ends up being, and which type you like best. Flowing and also watercolory, or defined and stained glass.
I love the colors though, really really.
Posted by Lauren at December 2, 2011 2:03 PMThe black
I like them both, but would go with the black. Without seems dated somehow.
Posted by seeherknit at December 2, 2011 2:04 PMI like it with the black. Very pretty!
Posted by Shilo at December 2, 2011 2:05 PMBlack all the way!
Posted by wendy at December 2, 2011 2:05 PMWith black fo sho!
Posted by kaitlin at December 2, 2011 2:07 PMLove them both, and thanks for the gift ideas! Just ordered 2 abacus counting bracelets (one for my sister and one for meeeee .. hooray).
And I'm feeling Christmas delusional, myself. Went to a nice Christmas stroll yarn sale last night and bought yarn for 3 projects, even though I have only one completed gift, 3 still on the needles, and a couple pair of socks planned in my mind for my sister and her husband.
And I am a slow a$$ knitter, too. Christmas 2012, anyone? ;))
Posted by Claudia at December 2, 2011 2:07 PMWITH the black. Ayup. That's this corner of central Vermont's vote. (Now, back to choosing a mosaic pattern out of Barbara Walker's book, for a kid's vest .....)
Posted by Maggins at December 2, 2011 2:07 PMWithout, unless you're going for retro. With the black looks like the knitted pillow my grandma had on her couch in 1972. It had one of those foam pillow forms that was roughly the consistency of plywood.
Posted by Ruth Anne at December 2, 2011 2:08 PMMmmm, entertaining freak-outs coming up. Nom nom nom...
Posted by Presbytera at December 2, 2011 2:08 PMlove the black between the colors - looks like the start of a great mitten!
Posted by suzanne at December 2, 2011 2:10 PMwithout the black. i can see I'm in the minority, but that's the way I feel.
If the little colored circles were substantially bigger than the black 'background' I could see using the black.
Either way, it will be beautiful.. win win
Posted by Sheila at December 2, 2011 2:10 PMI really like the one with the black. I'm hoping they are mittens. They would be very cool! BTW I read your blog to my boyfriend last night who insists I have enough yarn.
Posted by Sarah at December 2, 2011 2:10 PMDefinitely the one with the black, it makes the colors stand out better.
And whatever you do, don't do the rainbow.
With the black, but just barely. I really like them both. But more importantly, WHAT'S THE PATTERN?!? Must. have. pattern.
Posted by Mamalion at December 2, 2011 2:10 PMWithout the black. The black is cute but a bit dated.
And good luck to everyone as they slog through their holiday knitting!
Eek. It's too early to "slog," right?
Posted by Emily @ The Finicky Farmer at December 2, 2011 2:11 PMI like it with the black. Awesome color choices!
Posted by DonnaW at December 2, 2011 2:13 PMThey are both pretty, but I like the way the colors flow and blend without the black. Much softer and very cozy looking!
Posted by Sarah at December 2, 2011 2:13 PMI vote without the black--with the black, it is vaguely reminiscent of the ball band washcloth pattern, and I think that dampens the sophistication of the pattern (which is beautiful).
Posted by Molly at December 2, 2011 2:14 PMI like with the black. The best you could come up with male knitters was buttons???? Yikes!!
Posted by Jeff M at December 2, 2011 2:14 PMI like it without the black, but that also depends on how much black there will be in the rest of the project (mittens??) to balance it out.
Posted by Ellen at December 2, 2011 2:15 PMI like them without the black. You can make the colors flow into each other. Gotta love that slip stitch thing. I just learned that at a class I took:) Oh, yeah! You were there too!
Posted by Maria at December 2, 2011 2:15 PMWith!
Posted by Readersguide at December 2, 2011 2:16 PMBLACK. No question.
Posted by Suzanne Wilsey at December 2, 2011 2:17 PMDefinitely with the black - I love the stained glass effect!
Posted by Megan at December 2, 2011 2:18 PMWhat I do when I can't make a decision is to flip a coin. Then if I feel the slightest twinge of disappointment when I see the result, I know that the other outcome is what I truly wanted.
(but I say use the black)
May I be one of the few to say the colors both look fabulous and to make your own choice? AND that I really enjoyed the links to the jewelry. I'm not much of a jewelry person but these were pretty cool. Thank you!
Posted by Carla at December 2, 2011 2:19 PMWITH the black. So funny that so few people are on the fence; most have a decided preference. But that's good: You really can't go wrong. But for me, the black makes it special.
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 2:19 PMI like both but would pick without the black :)
Posted by Jan at December 2, 2011 2:19 PMThey can't be mittens because you've got so much yarn. Hexapuffs maybe?
I have a slight preference for the black, which, just to complicate things, is showing up as a nice chocolate brown on my monitor.
But if the field of color were very large--a blanket or such--there'd be a risk of the black being too overwhelming.
Posted by Amy S. at December 2, 2011 2:20 PMI think those are to be mittens...
If I were knitting them, there would be one with the black and one with the colors. Alternately, I might do the cuff in the colors and transition just before the hand to the black.
Now you see I was also the one that in high school convinced my mother I needed 2 pairs of converse shoes to get me through the school year so I could wear one of each color at the same time. Left foot: blue, right foot: purple.
Posted by Karie at December 2, 2011 2:21 PMI'm torn. I like them both as well. Is this the kind of project that could sustain them both in an alternating fashion?? It would add some busyness to the project, but depending on the project that may be okay.
Posted by April at December 2, 2011 2:22 PMWithout. It looks like flames or waves that way.
Posted by sprite at December 2, 2011 2:22 PMWith the black! It's awesome! :)
Posted by Linda at December 2, 2011 2:23 PMLike both, but think without the black is just a little nicer.
Posted by rachel at December 2, 2011 2:23 PMThere's more flow without the black. It seems more grown-up and sophisticated without the black.
It seems 'bit-and-piecey' with the black. Kind of childish.
Just my opinion.
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 2:27 PMwithout black, definitely without black
Posted by Lee Louise at December 2, 2011 2:27 PMWith the black the colors are just a tiny bit more masculine, but somehow the design itself looks more feminine that way; either way it reminds of an afghan.
Also, either way it looks like autumn leaves; don't faint into a pile of leaves if you're wearing it and need someone to notice you. In snow it would show up better.
With black, love the stain-glass look.
I love the way the colors pop with the black!!
Posted by Lisa R. at December 2, 2011 2:29 PMI think that the black has the great stained glass effect you mentioned. It looks really great that way.
Posted by Heather at December 2, 2011 2:29 PMI love the one with black, so dramatic. But even more important, what is that beautiful yarn with some many great colors!? PattiO
Posted by Patti O'Donnell at December 2, 2011 2:31 PMI like it with the black...then again I wish I knew what it was and where it was headed before I had to say!
Posted by Trista at December 2, 2011 2:32 PMWith the black. Can't wait to see what it grows up to be!
Posted by Sharon at December 2, 2011 2:33 PMI think I like it better without the black...
Posted by Jennifer at December 2, 2011 2:36 PMwith black
Posted by ToniC at December 2, 2011 2:36 PMWith the black, definitely...
Although I can see the point that the people who prefer this without the black are trying to make, I think it will look so much better with the black when you incorporate the cooler colors.
Posted by Joseph at December 2, 2011 2:39 PMBlack.
Hubby says that it looks like the beginning of a jumper. But I'm thinking mittens
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 2:39 PMWith the black!
Posted by Emily at December 2, 2011 2:39 PMI personally have a thing for stained glass - I can't look at it enough - it mesmerizes me. I think it's because each color pops to the front all on it's own. So, my vote - go with the black - the colors come alive.
Posted by Diana at December 2, 2011 2:40 PMI like it without, actually. A little more subtle, maybe...
Posted by JodyO at December 2, 2011 2:42 PMI like it with the black, it makes the colours stand out more.
Posted by Kate S at December 2, 2011 2:42 PMDefinitely with the black.
Posted by Rachel at December 2, 2011 2:45 PMOnce you go black... I'm still voting for it. Whatever it is, it's all kinds of awesome, and I'll be hanging from the edge of my seat until you see fit to tell us what it is!
Posted by Paula @ KnitandSeek at December 2, 2011 2:46 PMDont know why I am even doing this black.
Posted by Carolee at December 2, 2011 2:47 PMI like the black for a small project, but without for a larger project. Also, is colorwork in the air now?! I think the colorwork mitten bug has bitten our knit group.
Posted by Erica at December 2, 2011 2:49 PMI vote for with the black. It feels a little muddled without it to me.
Posted by Lisa at December 2, 2011 2:50 PMWith the black. Just much more pizzazz.
Posted by Laura at December 2, 2011 2:51 PMWith the black, and my friend Amy has a link to more knitted jewelry. Beautiful hand-made necklaces. If any of these readers are in Brooklyn, they'll be on sale at the PS 321 holiday shop.
Posted by liz at December 2, 2011 2:51 PM34 hours. Did you set the timer?
Is this one of these posts where we vote for our favorite? My vote: you can make either work.
Who's in charge? The yarn or the knitter. I think it's a synthesis.
Posted by Juliet in Grand Rapids at December 2, 2011 2:51 PMI'd say with the black, or at least a darker color in place of the black. The other looks rather outdated to me.
Posted by Angeluna at December 2, 2011 2:52 PMNo black - the colors look much cozier nestled up against each other!
Posted by Nina at December 2, 2011 2:53 PMDepends on "to what end":
With the black screams "Mittens"
Without the black whispers "Hat"
Personally, I like it without the black, I like the ways the colours look autumnal (is that a word?), which will be nice. If they are to be "dressy" mittens (don't laugh, you know you have them!), then go for the black background. Just my 2 cents...
Posted by Nancy in TO at December 2, 2011 2:56 PMWith the black, definitely. (Of course, it would be better if you had a charcoal yarn that would look more like actual leading, but that way lies madness!)
Posted by aliceq at December 2, 2011 2:57 PMThe black
Posted by Miriana at December 2, 2011 2:58 PMblack
Posted by Diane at December 2, 2011 2:59 PMI love it with the black! Definitely with the black. And I'm loving the gifts for knitters series!
Posted by Gillian at December 2, 2011 2:59 PMI'm plumping for black -- not because so many others like it too, but yes, it definitely pops the other colours. If you had some cool colours (i.e. blues and greens) in with those warm ones, you might not need the black to 'pop' them but...
P.S. I also quilt, and am studying art quilting, so I've been rather highly exposed to the colour wheel lately. :-)
Posted by Marg in Mirror, AB at December 2, 2011 3:01 PMOh, definitely with the black! It makes everything pop so much more.
Winter is coming. You don't happen to watch Game of Thrones, do you?
Posted by Nicole T at December 2, 2011 3:01 PMWITH WITH WITH!!!
Posted by kris at December 2, 2011 3:01 PMI li ke it without the black. It seems to have more flow and rhythm that way. maybe a row of black here and there would ground the colors.
Posted by sweetpeajenny at December 2, 2011 3:02 PMWith the black, to make the colors pop!
Posted by Cecile at December 2, 2011 3:03 PMWith the black. Dunno why.
Posted by Elizabeth at December 2, 2011 3:04 PMI prefer it without the black.
Posted by MJ at December 2, 2011 3:04 PMI like both, but a preference really depends on what you'll be making with it...can you tell us or is it a secret from the blog?
Posted by Amy at December 2, 2011 3:05 PMWith the black! I love the contrast.
Posted by Jesse at December 2, 2011 3:07 PMWithout! With looks like a 70s afghan, of course if you're going for that look, then with.
Posted by KnittingInMind at December 2, 2011 3:09 PMWEIRD. I was just studying a very similar tuck stitch pattern this morning in one of Melissa Leapman's book. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that this is done one color at a time. (if this is what I think it is) Magical knitting.
I like it with the black.
Posted by Ed at December 2, 2011 3:10 PMdepends on the project, but just looking at the swatches, I prefer no black. I especially like how each color dips down with the slip stitch so the colors are interspersed, rather than being outlined by black.
Love your gift suggestions! wow, there are some crazy creative people out there...
Posted by Allison at December 2, 2011 3:11 PMWithout the black, only as a border.
Posted by Mary at December 2, 2011 3:11 PMIt looks more organic and less fussy without the black.
Posted by Jessica K. at December 2, 2011 3:11 PMI'm going with 'both' do colour sections without the black and add a couple of black rows between sections of 3 or 4 colours. Best of both worlds??
:)k
Posted by Kelley Green at December 2, 2011 3:11 PMI'm with you - I don't know which one I like best. How about some with black & some without? LOL
Posted by Manda at December 2, 2011 3:13 PMI like it without the black.
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 3:13 PMI like the idea of the black but not necessarily the black color. I'd go without. I love all the colors of yarn in the photo, thought. Especially the blue and cranberry.
Posted by Lisa at December 2, 2011 3:14 PMI prefer it with the black
Posted by natasha at December 2, 2011 3:17 PMBoth are nice, but with the black is better. Anything evoking stained glass has to be gooder. Really.
Posted by Voie de Vie at December 2, 2011 3:19 PMOkay, I like the striking contrast of the black but I really like the little dip/clam shell look without the black. So can you make the little clam shell dip with the colors and a black outline? I know, I know, I'm nuts.
By the way Rams, fun!
Posted by Judy at December 2, 2011 3:19 PMWith the black!
Posted by kim at December 2, 2011 3:19 PMDefinitely without the black!
Posted by Judy at December 2, 2011 3:19 PMGo with the black background.
Posted by Josée at December 2, 2011 3:20 PMlove the black between
can't stand to knit intarsia
I hope it's stranded
Really depends on the project. My first reaction was with the black. But without could really nice too. Size? Shape? To wear or not be worn?
Posted by Nancye at December 2, 2011 3:21 PMwith black. Or you could sub in brown or navy blue...
Also, I couldn't help but notice one of the buttons behind your link of gifts for knitters says swatches are for babies. (maybe not...)
Without - 2 votes (dd and me). DD likes the colour flow and I prefer the scallop shape.
Posted by Mary B at December 2, 2011 3:23 PMCasting my vote for with the black. In the pattern without the black, the lowest stitch of each color sticks out too much for my taste....it's almost obscene.
Also, I am so glad my day included a "Fatal Attraction" reference. Love that movie!
Definitely with the black. Gumballs! Stained glass! Contrast!
Oh, early December, when every creative whim is full of possibility. It's like being newly pregnant, and your child could be grow up to be anything. Eventually things turn out the way they're meant to be, but the potential before any choices are made...cast on another.
Posted by pdxknitterati at December 2, 2011 3:27 PMIt's like "Family Feud"... Survey says?
They are both VERY nice. But my vote is WITHOUT.
It looks like a mitten to me, not a swatch.
If the one without black is faster to knit then go with that one first, you can do the one with black as the next one if the first one works out. If something better comes along then you can always do the black one "later".
Without. The stained glass thing has been done to death.
Posted by Leslie at December 2, 2011 3:30 PMIt depends on what you're making, and since we don't know that, it's hard to say. Overall, I like it better WITHOUT the black. The black gives you the window pane effect, but looks more retro. Both are beautiful, though, like most of your creations!
Posted by Laura at December 2, 2011 3:31 PMThe black makes the colours stand out, but dude. It is winter in Canada. We have enough black with all the bare twigs and dirty snow. I say all colour!
Posted by Dorothy at December 2, 2011 3:31 PMBoth ways are beautiful, but I vote for without the black because it looks like trees in the fall, in a kind of modernist (modernknit?) take.
Posted by Helen at December 2, 2011 3:31 PMHand up for the black!
Posted by Michelle at December 2, 2011 3:32 PMCan't decide, because I don't know what the end product is....
Posted by suburbancorrespondent at December 2, 2011 3:33 PM
I VOTE WITH BLACK!!!
Posted by Jade at December 2, 2011 3:34 PMWITHOUT the black.
Posted by Jody at December 2, 2011 3:34 PMWith the black! I love how it makes the colors pop, especially from a distance.
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 3:37 PMAbsolutely WITH the black!! Are you going to share this pattern? I love it!
Posted by Bonney at December 2, 2011 3:37 PMI love it with the black.
Posted by polinium at December 2, 2011 3:37 PMAbsolutely, 100%, no doubt about it, go with the black. And I can completely understand why you need to get this out of your system. Looks like it will be gorgeous!
Posted by Kate at December 2, 2011 3:37 PMdefinitely use the black
Posted by Ann at December 2, 2011 3:38 PMwith. for certain.
Posted by dana at December 2, 2011 3:38 PMThe one with the black is pretty, but the one without the black look like wee sheep heads. You can see the shape of the head looking straight at you with muzzle and even little floppy ears.
Posted by Benita at December 2, 2011 3:39 PMBlack! And I don't even know what it'll be, but I want the pattern!
Posted by Christine at December 2, 2011 3:42 PMWithout the black. I love stained glass, but these colours just look so good touching each other.
Posted by Perpetua at December 2, 2011 3:42 PMWith the black, also agree it makes the colors pop. If black wasn't the outline color, I think it's fine without, but with a black outline I like the black surround the individual colors.
Posted by twelvedaysold at December 2, 2011 3:44 PMI really like the colors with the black - it looks like stained glass and brings them all together.
Posted by Deborah C. at December 2, 2011 3:46 PMWithout black is my preference - the colors are more cheerful directly together. The black borders still make it pop.
Great gift recs! Looking forward to more to come.
Posted by Ruth in Seattle at December 2, 2011 3:47 PMI agree with you that both are very beautiful but with the black seems to set each piece apart as a little jewel so I say go with the black
Posted by Suzie at December 2, 2011 3:47 PMWithout the black. The colors seem happier being closer together.
Posted by Candace at December 2, 2011 3:47 PMIf the finished item will be mittens (or similar small project), with black is both pretty and practical. If the finished object will be afghan-sized, the proportion of black to color scale would drive my eyes crazy.
Excellent gift ideas!
Posted by Kali at December 2, 2011 3:50 PMWith the black
Posted by Katrina at December 2, 2011 3:52 PMI like it with the black too.
Did you read the piece in last week's Maclean's about the silent, knitting midwife? I thought of you: http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/11/23/don%E2%80%99t-let-anyone-watch/
Posted by Renee the Sequel at December 2, 2011 3:52 PMWith black. Perfectly lovely.
Posted by HeatherC at December 2, 2011 3:53 PMWITH the black
the colours are much more defined, and I think it looks much prettier
I vote without the black.
And if you think her buttons are cute, you should try Slipped Stitch Studios' WIP bags. I adore them; I have three and have given many as gifts to my knitter friends. They're amazing!
Posted by Deanna at December 2, 2011 3:54 PMWith the black, definitely.
Posted by Natalie at December 2, 2011 3:59 PMCasting my vote for WITH THE BLACK!
Posted by Whitney at December 2, 2011 3:59 PMWith the black definitely!
Posted by Elisabeth at December 2, 2011 4:00 PMBoth are great, but I love the black, probably for the stained glass effect. Without the black it reads 'argyle' to mean, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Posted by Amy at December 2, 2011 4:03 PMwith black
Posted by Laura at December 2, 2011 4:04 PMWithout
Posted by Donna at December 2, 2011 4:05 PMWithout please. The other reminds me of the knitted tea cosies of my childhood. I now quite like knitted tea cosies but I don't think this is what you intend to knit ALL the colours!
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 4:06 PMWith or without? Depends on the finished article. In my opinion, on a large piece the black would break up the colours into too many bitty bits. On a small piece the black would be spiffy. Oh, and don't 'rainbow' the colours. Too common.
On survey-type questions such as this, it's fun to read the comments, but what about including a clickupon poll counter, a la Ravelry, for immediate and graphic tallying?
Love the knitting jewelry!
Posted by Marta at December 2, 2011 4:06 PMI like the effect of the black, but to me it looks a bit harsh against the other colors. Maybe a dark brown, or a deep navy blue? I also love the no-black version - it looks light and bright, like candles in a window on a winter night.
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 4:07 PMI think without the black looks more elegant and with the black looks more whimsical. So I guess it would depend on the final product and the intended wearer and purpose. I do like your color choices.
Posted by Kim in VA at December 2, 2011 4:08 PMThey're very different looks. If you want the bubbles/window pane look, go with the black. For Flames, go with the solid. It depends on the look you're going for. (If it matters, now I want to knit a flaming mitten just like your swatch)
To be honest, you're not going to get satisfactory results from asking the blog. If the majority say black, you're going to think that you really like the flames, such a shame, sigh. And vice versa.
You do know you're going to have to knit them both, right? If these are mittens (to replace the ones you mentioned you needed replacing), it won't take long at all. Just do it! If it's not mittens or something similarly small, please put them in a bag in the back of your closet and step away until January. Really. They won't fit in your knitting spreadsheet and let you stay the sane woman we love. (well, we love you when you're crazy, too. That's the way we are)
Posted by Emma A at December 2, 2011 4:10 PMBoth are very nice - but I would NOT knit the black first personally, so I am vastly out-voted!!!
Posted by Magi at December 2, 2011 4:10 PMSurprising myself here as I usually like the stained glass look, WITHOUT the black.
Posted by Ellen at December 2, 2011 4:11 PMDo you really need yet another vote for black?
Posted by TracyGP at December 2, 2011 4:13 PMWith the black. It just really looks crisper.
Posted by Connie at December 2, 2011 4:13 PMWITHOUT the black.....though it may be because of the quilter in me....It looks like Patchwork. Very pretty!
Posted by Chris at December 2, 2011 4:15 PMI like the one without black around each color change a little better, although they are both beautiful. I can't wait to see what you plan to make.
Posted by Penelope at December 2, 2011 4:16 PMI like both, however I'm leaning to the one with the black
Posted by Irene at December 2, 2011 4:16 PMwithout the black - looks like the clamshell shingling on my house !!
Posted by Liz Tamiso at December 2, 2011 4:17 PMI love it with the black. It's amazing!
Posted by Kirsten at December 2, 2011 4:18 PM1) It's your choice (you probably knew that) and I haven't read all the other posts, but I like the black, stained glass look.
2) "Swatches are for babies" button...HAHAHAHA!! and LOL!!!
LOVE anything by Sassafras Creations!!! I want that necklace......and a watch......and more earrings..... ;-)

Posted by newamy at December 2, 2011 4:21 PMI like the swatch with the black.
Posted by Barbara Stoner at December 2, 2011 4:22 PMDefinitely with the black.
Posted by Liz A. at December 2, 2011 4:23 PMWith the black. The colors all pop. cecilia
Posted by Cecilia at December 2, 2011 4:25 PMBlack.
Colour theory: the black background will make the other colours 'float'. (think Amish quilts).
I enjoy the contrast that black gives, however, I don't think of you as a person who uses much 'black'. Depends on the end application.
Posted by StellaMM at December 2, 2011 4:27 PMI prefer the black. Do you think you could make them both?
Posted by Elizabeth at December 2, 2011 4:28 PMThe swatches are both beautiful in their own right. However, being a jewelry maker for quite some time I like the black more. It makes the colors stand out and sing (or speak) for themselves.
Posted by Liz Fields at December 2, 2011 4:28 PMDefinitely with the black!
Posted by Brenda at December 2, 2011 4:31 PMI'd go with the Black, it pops more :)
Posted by Kathy Gillard at December 2, 2011 4:32 PMWith the black it's more exciting. Without black it's quieter. I prefer the black, but are you looking for exciting or quiet?
Posted by Nancy at December 2, 2011 4:34 PMblack. definitely the black.
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 4:35 PMwith black! I love the stained glass effect!
Posted by Skye at December 2, 2011 4:38 PMI prefer the swatch without the black. Maybe next you can put up voting buttons so you can just take a quick peek at the vote without having to read all the comments :)
Posted by Bette at December 2, 2011 4:39 PMInteresting how we see things so differently, isn't it?
I love it with the black. Crisper and it pops.
Posted by Ann at December 2, 2011 4:39 PMWith the black--looks so striking. But it would help to know what it was to become.
Posted by m at December 2, 2011 4:43 PMWith the black!
Posted by sharra at December 2, 2011 4:44 PMDefinitely without. I like the way the colors fade into each other that way. With the black reminds me more of a crocheted afghan. Nothing wrong with that. Just a personal preference.
Posted by haley at December 2, 2011 4:45 PMWith black, definitely.
Posted by Mandie at December 2, 2011 4:46 PMI love both, and my choice would depend on the project. For something small (mittens, hat), I'd go for the black. For something larger, I'd choose without black. I agree with Violet that the black has a cool retro look.
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 4:46 PMJeez. I'm guessing it's a sock. I mean. Look at the odds?
Posted by Nic at December 2, 2011 4:47 PMWith.
Posted by Rachel B. at December 2, 2011 4:47 PMJust saw your tweet -- definitely WITH the black!
Posted by janna at December 2, 2011 4:48 PMI prefer it with the black. It makes for a more striking combination.
That said, I wouldn't sneer at the other combination, either.
Oooh. The black is cool, but I love the one with less black. It looks so warm and yummy and pretty and mmmmmmm.
Posted by Stardancer at December 2, 2011 4:48 PMI like it without the black.
And I might send your gifts for knitters day 2 out to anyone who asks what I want.
Posted by Laia at December 2, 2011 4:49 PMI like them both, but I vote for the scallops (without black).
Posted by Marcia at December 2, 2011 4:50 PMDefinitely the black. Love it!
Posted by kelly at December 2, 2011 4:51 PMI like the one with the black outlines.
Posted by Hockeyturtle at December 2, 2011 4:51 PMI like it with the black---love the stained glass look. I'm working on something similar right now!
Tamara
The beautiful red is getting lost in the black, but the black is needed to make the orange and yellow sing. How about a combo? the red/orange fan as a line then the yellow outlined in the black?
Posted by MLB at December 2, 2011 4:52 PMI like the black!!
Posted by Stephanie at December 2, 2011 4:56 PMwith the black. it really makes the colors stand out. blame it on the compartmentalized way my brain thinks. is it small enough to do it both ways? then you have 2 different looks of the same thing... I know it's Christmas and there's that thing that we all need called time but......
happy decision whichever you choose
Posted by craftycarole at December 2, 2011 4:57 PMBoth swatches have merit. What are you making?
Posted by Juti at December 2, 2011 4:58 PMI think the black is a wonderful contrast to the bright colors, it makes them pop out of the work. Also, the slipped stitches without the black look really odd to me, and make the colors melt into each other.
Posted by Anna at December 2, 2011 4:58 PMnoir
Posted by Carmen at December 2, 2011 5:00 PMWithout the black
Posted by Mayari at December 2, 2011 5:03 PMWith the black
Posted by Dorie at December 2, 2011 5:04 PMDefinitely with the black. I love the definition and the windows of colours.
Posted by Katharine at December 2, 2011 5:04 PMWithout. With the black it kinda looks like a ballband wash cloth. Unless, of course, that's what you're making, but it seems like a big build up for that...
Definitely without.
I vote for the one without black. I like the way the colors flow together; they look choppy to me with the black. Or, if you can't decide you could make one of each.
Posted by Denise B at December 2, 2011 5:06 PMBlack. Oh yes, black. Please.
Posted by Sharon at December 2, 2011 5:07 PMYou don't need my vote, go with your gut.
But I did want to say THANK YOU for the gift links. I got 3 gifts for my daughter from your links. Awesome!
Posted by Stuart at December 2, 2011 5:07 PMOh crap, I looked at it again. Up close, I love the black.
Then I looked at the top picture, where the swatches are further away.....
I love how blendy the non-black one is in that photo.
Posted by Katharine at December 2, 2011 5:09 PMOh, please, with the black. Bright stars in the night sky.
Posted by Demetria at December 2, 2011 5:11 PMBlack, unless you are thinking 'candy corn'.
Posted by crys at December 2, 2011 5:12 PMWithout the black! I like the flow of colors vs. the chopped up shapes. Either way, though, the pattern would make nifty mittens. = )
Posted by Jamie at December 2, 2011 5:13 PMWithout! But...if you do go with the black, maybe you could do a black to gray gradient that plays with the colors in front? Just another fun idea.
Posted by Jamie at December 2, 2011 5:15 PMDefinitely with the black. However, I am an engineer so please keep that in mind when weighing my comment.
Posted by Amy in StL at December 2, 2011 5:16 PMWith black floats my boat.
Posted by Cheryl at December 2, 2011 5:18 PMI like it with the black. Can't wait to see what this looks like if it comes to fruition!
Posted by Jess at December 2, 2011 5:18 PMWith black, it adds some definition.
Posted by Tara at December 2, 2011 5:19 PMI like it WITH the black!
Loving your knitterly gift ideas, I had no CLUE there was so much out there!! I want it all, basically .......... :-D
Posted by melissa at December 2, 2011 5:20 PMWithout. Colors flow into each other.
Posted by heather at December 2, 2011 5:20 PMI vote for the black - it grounds the colours better, and they really glow against it. Reminds me of Christmas lights at night!
Posted by Debra at December 2, 2011 5:21 PMPersonally, I like the one without the black. The colors really pop and seem so much more alive in that one.
Posted by Gail at December 2, 2011 5:22 PMWith the black - for sure!
Posted by Carrie at December 2, 2011 5:22 PMDefinitely the black. It makes the swatch look so vibrant.
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 5:24 PMBlack. Absolutely.
Posted by Charlene at December 2, 2011 5:25 PMCasting my vote for no black. I love the idea of the colors playing off each other with no black in between.
Posted by VickiB at December 2, 2011 5:25 PMwithout the black!
Posted by peg stoecklein at December 2, 2011 5:25 PMWith black. Not even close.
Posted by Marianne at December 2, 2011 5:26 PMI love it with the black - the contract really makes the colors shine!
Posted by Angie S. at December 2, 2011 5:26 PMOops, contrast not contract, obviously!
Posted by Angie S. at December 2, 2011 5:28 PMBoth look great, but in different ways: with black has more visual heft, and is slightly more masculine, whereas the one without black has a lighter, more feminine feel. So, is intended end product meant to be more hefty, or light? Good luck deciding!
Posted by Cynthia RD at December 2, 2011 5:29 PMHard decision but I think the one without the black in between so the rows sort of blend from one color to another.
BTW I am having the same problem sticking to my program. Just found a 'good' reason to restart knitting on a sweater for me. Need to wear it to a Holiday Party in 8 days. Well... I can dream as well as the next knitter.
Whichever way it goes for you I am glad you are having fun.
Posted by Susan S at December 2, 2011 5:29 PMWith the black, for sure!
Posted by Sue G. at December 2, 2011 5:30 PMno black would be my vote, I like the flow of colors without the definition.
Posted by Shanna at December 2, 2011 5:30 PMWithout a doubt, the BLACK!
I like them best with the black. It gives it kind of a 3D effect, making the colors really stand out. Both are beautiful work, and I'm amazed that you can pop out two swatches, which look to be about equal to a third of a mitten apiece, in such a short amount of time!
Posted by Erica at December 2, 2011 5:31 PMWith the black. It reminds me of my grandmother's granny square afghan that was on the back of our couch when I was growing up. Each square was surrounded with black.
Posted by Jennifer at December 2, 2011 5:31 PMwith the black!
good luck!
carry on!
Without
Posted by Donna at December 2, 2011 5:32 PMWith the black! But I don't think I am the only person who feels that way, judging from all the pages I had to scroll through to get here.
Posted by Liisa at December 2, 2011 5:33 PMBlack! The colors sing with the black background, but they barely even hum put together.
Posted by Kat at December 2, 2011 5:34 PMWith black! :)
Posted by Rosane at December 2, 2011 5:34 PMNot helping, just saying:
With the black looks very orderly, little shapes contained in rows.
Without the black, the slipped stitch adds curves and movement.
I like the second one without the black better.
Posted by Meghan at December 2, 2011 5:34 PMWith the black, very much so.
Posted by Jo at December 2, 2011 5:34 PMI vote for the black. It looks more unusual than the slipped stitch.
Posted by Rleigh at December 2, 2011 5:39 PMI love the swatch with the black outline. It sets the colors off nicely. As you said, like a stained glass window, they stand out and call your attention. While the swatch without the black outline is nice, it's...well...just nice.
Posted by Jody at December 2, 2011 5:40 PMWith out needs green ;-)
Posted by Heather at December 2, 2011 5:42 PMI don't think you could go wrong with either version.
But I tend to favor the 'without' black because it makes the color-shapes look a little more like they are tessellating.
Posted by sue at December 2, 2011 5:44 PMI definitely vote for with the black. Gorgeous! The little frames make the colors pop!
Posted by Laura at December 2, 2011 5:44 PMWith the black!
Posted by June at December 2, 2011 5:45 PMI gotta go with the one with black. Tough choice though!
Posted by Maryann at December 2, 2011 5:45 PMWith black!
Posted by Renne' at December 2, 2011 5:45 PMI like the black, it does make the colors stand out. But with the black you get dots. Without the black you get these really cool colored scallops with a stem that is more unusual, I think, than the black dots. Also more flattering, I think, if it is to be a garment.
Posted by Margo Schembre at December 2, 2011 5:45 PMwithout
Posted by Tracy at December 2, 2011 5:47 PMI really like the swatch with black. Love the stained glass look!
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 5:47 PMWithout the black...because I love the dance!
Posted by Susan in Guelph at December 2, 2011 5:47 PMWith the black for sure!
Posted by Jessi at December 2, 2011 5:47 PMWith the black ... DEFINITELY with the black ... I think ...
Posted by Cathy at December 2, 2011 5:47 PMWithout black.
Posted by Jane at December 2, 2011 5:48 PMWithout - definitely without.
Posted by Victoria at December 2, 2011 5:49 PMI love the black, but I think Margo S. raised some good points. (That's the problem with being a Libra, you almost always see both sides of an issue.) So do the one you like best. (Black, black, black!)
I love your gift ideas. I will have to pass them, at least the ones I don't get for me!
Posted by kazbels at December 2, 2011 5:49 PMWith the black Hands down.
I have a knitting button that reads "If knitting were exercise, you could bounce a quarter off my arse"
Posted by Jenifer Rider at December 2, 2011 5:53 PMWithout the black! Looks more modern, much more colorful and cheery, and the colors can blend together a lot more in brilliant harmony.
Posted by Michelle at December 2, 2011 5:54 PMwithout. don't quite know what's wrong with me these days as usually I would choose with. without gives it more flow, less structure. Hmmm... I must be on to something here...
Looks like the main consensus is with. Do you think those peeps like more structure more control? just sayin...
Posted by LynneP at December 2, 2011 5:54 PMI like both - but I like the one without best.
Posted by elsiroomom at December 2, 2011 5:56 PMI like the black...but without the black is unique I think.
Posted by Lydia at December 2, 2011 6:00 PMwith the black is pretty.
Posted by Aline at December 2, 2011 6:00 PMWITHOUT THE BLACK!!! In caps cause is think I'm in the minority. I just love how the colors merge without the interruption of the black.
Posted by EileenG at December 2, 2011 6:01 PMI prefer the black, but both look great!
Posted by ashpags at December 2, 2011 6:01 PMWITH the black - it looks like a stained glass window.
Lovely.
Posted by stephanie at December 2, 2011 6:03 PMI prefer with thew black - it looks more modern and graphic; without reminds me of the Victorian revival houses with the 'Painted Lady' themes - too twee.
Posted by Sandi at December 2, 2011 6:06 PMI like it better with the black.....love it, in fact.
Posted by Lorelei at December 2, 2011 6:08 PMWith the black, absolutely!!!
Posted by Allison at December 2, 2011 6:10 PMLove you even more today!
And: WITH the black.
Posted by Anniessa at December 2, 2011 6:13 PMWith the black it really makes the colors stand out
Posted by Bonnie at December 2, 2011 6:16 PMWith the black background! Gorgeous!
Posted by Jay at December 2, 2011 6:18 PMWith the black! The windows are so pretty.
Posted by Helen at December 2, 2011 6:20 PMI actually am in the minority here, but I prefer the swatch without the black. I think it's nice to have just a row or two of black to break up the color groupings, though. But something about the colors by themselves, without the black, seems to intensify the colors. It doesn't make sense, I know, but that's the impression I got when I looked at the two swatches.
Posted by Toni at December 2, 2011 6:22 PMI like the version without black better, which surprises me, but then knitting does that, doesn't it?
Posted by ccr in MA at December 2, 2011 6:26 PMWhile I suspect that the black version will garner more votes, I'm going to throw my vote to the one WITHOUT the black background. My personal take is that the colors flow more uninterrupted since they are harmonious with each other. Now, if there were more discordant colors next to each other, I suspect it would probably look more cohesive with the black. Just my 2 cents worth to add to the penny jar.
Posted by Kimber at December 2, 2011 6:26 PMI vote for with the black. It make
s the colors pop.
I vote with the black, but am wondering where the blues and greens will fit in???? :)
Posted by Jane at December 2, 2011 6:27 PMWith the black, definitely!
Love the gift suggestions so far - I've sent the link to hubby.
I've decided the one with the black is best.
I like both, and at first was going to side with the sample without the black. I think I liked that one because the warm tones flow so well together. I tried to imagine how it would look once the cooler colors are added. That's when I decided the stained glass effect was better.
Posted by Lilea at December 2, 2011 6:29 PMGoing with the black.
Posted by Maddi at December 2, 2011 6:31 PMWith black
Posted by Kate at December 2, 2011 6:34 PMIsn't it nice to let everyone decide for you? With Black!
Posted by Wendi at December 2, 2011 6:36 PMBlack!
Wow it just pops with the black!
I like it with the black, it makes the colors POP!
Posted by Laura at December 2, 2011 6:43 PMI like both, but I vote for without. It's so warm looking, like an autumn day or a cheery fire.
Posted by Karen at December 2, 2011 6:44 PMWithout. I like both, I love black, but without is my vote.
Posted by Teresa at December 2, 2011 6:46 PMWith the black. It's nice without but it really sings with the borders and definition.
Posted by eclair at December 2, 2011 6:49 PMI *hate* black. I don't think I own a single skein of black yarn. My answer? Absolutely black. Even I would go out and buy black yarn to knit what you're making. Ho Ho Ho!
Posted by Kristina in TN at December 2, 2011 6:50 PMBlack :)
Posted by Tam at December 2, 2011 6:50 PMI like the one with black better but it kind of looks like the "Mason Dixon" dishcloth that hey used from the ballband directions.
Posted by Carolyn in NC at December 2, 2011 6:51 PMI am weighing in on the without side. I tend to agree with someone's commet that the black makes it more ordinary or like something you might buy at the mall. I like the piles of leaves analogies.
Posted by Peg in Kensington, California at December 2, 2011 6:52 PMwithout black!
Posted by patti at December 2, 2011 6:54 PMBlack, black, black...
Posted by Heather Shelton at December 2, 2011 6:55 PMWith the black
Posted by Laura in Casper, WY at December 2, 2011 6:56 PMI vote for "with the black."
Posted by Elizabeth Fry at December 2, 2011 6:57 PMWith black!
Posted by Mady at December 2, 2011 6:57 PMI definitely prefer the black version. The surface seems flatter/smoother.
Posted by Robin at December 2, 2011 6:59 PMWithout Without Without.
They look like socks - I think without is the right choice. The 3 non-knitters in my house agree.
Posted by WhizGidget at December 2, 2011 7:03 PMWith. Most definitely.
Posted by melanie at December 2, 2011 7:04 PMWITH the black! Love it so much!
Posted by Aimee at December 2, 2011 7:04 PMLove the black!
Posted by Lynne at December 2, 2011 7:07 PMWith the black!
Posted by KathyC at December 2, 2011 7:08 PMWith the black ... the colors really pop!
Posted by Jamie Dritschilo at December 2, 2011 7:12 PMwithout.
Posted by carol at December 2, 2011 7:13 PMWith the black, hands down.
Posted by Cara at December 2, 2011 7:14 PMdefinitely with the black. although if you're using mostly warm colors, a dark brown would be really great in place of the black.
Posted by mims at December 2, 2011 7:14 PMWithout. The black seems to make the circles smaller - or maybe that is actually the case? The colors are too small with the black.
Posted by Shruti at December 2, 2011 7:18 PMDepends. If I were going to wear it, then without the black. But if I'm going to curl up under it, definitely with the black. If it's not for me, then you'll have to decide for yourself :-)
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 7:22 PMWith! With!!
Posted by Robin at December 2, 2011 7:23 PMI like it with the black.
Posted by Stella at December 2, 2011 7:24 PMWithout. The warm colors and cozy motifs nestling among each other, each with their burgeoning, organic shape--it all lends a "kick back, have a brew, you're among friends" conviviality, a feeling that seems a little at odds with the separation and stronger contrast in the black swatch. In other words, the black harshes my visual mellow.
The good thing is, I'm not overthinking it.
Posted by Ro at December 2, 2011 7:25 PMWith black...yep..it's the stain glass windows that did me in...
Posted by B. Rickman at December 2, 2011 7:26 PMI can see where you are going with the black, but I do like the second one more...don't ask me why :-)
Posted by Jussi at December 2, 2011 7:35 PMWith the black, because I love the stained glass look. However, if it's something you're going to wear personally? Maybe without the black, because that seems more you.
Posted by notsocrafty at December 2, 2011 7:37 PMWith the black. It's pretty either way, but I like the way the black makes the colors pop.
Posted by Mary Ellen at December 2, 2011 7:38 PMReally like it with the black!
Posted by jessicac at December 2, 2011 7:41 PMThe black adds a richness that makes it look creatively much more intense. The stitches pop. The other colors look more like things one of my grandmothers did. Although still looks good I much prefer the black.
Posted by Lisa at December 2, 2011 7:46 PMPersonally, I'd give up trying to decide and pick both. Why can't one enjoy wearing two different cuffs? Certainly not as boring as knitting an identical pair.
Posted by Cathy E at December 2, 2011 7:48 PMI'm a vote for With the Black. Hands down. Also can't wait to see if it grows into a mitten or a sock.
Posted by Sally at Rivendale Farms at December 2, 2011 7:50 PMBlack = wow factor!
Posted by Michele at December 2, 2011 8:01 PMWith black. Definitely.
Posted by Ahna Emmert at December 2, 2011 8:03 PMI love the black. It makes a beautiful statement.
Posted by Carol at December 2, 2011 8:04 PMWith the black. It frames the colors nicely, and really makes them pop!
Posted by Ladona at December 2, 2011 8:09 PMBoth are pretty good. The black sets off the colors but the other looks sort of like Bargello which could lead to very interesting places...
Posted by Kathy at December 2, 2011 8:12 PMRedundantly, with the black.
Posted by Camilla Hadlock at December 2, 2011 8:13 PMI prefer without. The colors are brighter.
Posted by Dee at December 2, 2011 8:14 PMWhile 'black is beautiful' the swatch without the black instantly reminded me of trees in autumn in my native Appalachia and the aspen groves in the West. Both make my heartstrings sing.
Posted by Freda at December 2, 2011 8:15 PMBlack, for sure!
Posted by Kathy at December 2, 2011 8:17 PMwith the black, no contest.
Posted by Amanda at December 2, 2011 8:18 PMBoth, so cute, but I do prefer the black.
Enjoy playing!
Posted by Veronica Martin at December 2, 2011 8:20 PMI really prefer the version with black! Love your countdown! Have a great weekend!
Posted by Maryse at December 2, 2011 8:23 PMI like it with the black best. It helps the colors pop out more.
Could we have the pattern, please?!
Posted by Susan at December 2, 2011 8:27 PMI like the one without the black. The colours seem more harmonious with the black separating them.
Posted by May at December 2, 2011 8:33 PMBoth! although it looks like the "blacks" have it.
Love the buttons! May have to give them to myself.
WithOUT.
Posted by Wendy at December 2, 2011 8:44 PMBlack!
Posted by Kathleen at December 2, 2011 8:52 PMDefinitely WITH!
Posted by Jen at December 2, 2011 8:52 PMWhat is the final product to be? How large will it be? With black is better for something that you want to have the other colors pop and is not very big. Without black is more subtle looking, looks like fall and would work on both small and larger knitted pieces.
Posted by Choc at December 2, 2011 8:53 PMThe drop stitch pattern is dear to my heart, being the first thing I ever really crafted (four drop-stitch afghans for friends as graduation gifts), so I love the non-black, but I think that with these particular colors the black really makes them stand out.
Posted by Ana at December 2, 2011 8:53 PMWITHOUT! With looks too easy. As in, you didn't put all of those hours into it that you actually did.
Posted by Katie at December 2, 2011 8:55 PMWithout! I like the way the colors blend better.
Posted by Claire at December 2, 2011 8:57 PMWith the black, absolutely!
Posted by Karen P. in Atlanta at December 2, 2011 9:03 PMWith the black! I love the stained glass window look. Both are lovely though.
Posted by Emily M at December 2, 2011 9:05 PMAre you going to add these all up, and the most votes wins? I do hope you go without the black. The black coarsens the design.
Posted by Katie K at December 2, 2011 9:05 PMI feel compelled to de-lurk and vote no black. Totes for sure.
Posted by sarah at December 2, 2011 9:07 PMI love the stained glass look with the black. Can't wait to see what the project it!
Posted by Chrissy at December 2, 2011 9:09 PMWithout! I think the colors are lovely together and the color sections look smaller, shapelier, and more integrated - or something - without the black.
Posted by Becky at December 2, 2011 9:10 PMWITHOUT the black.
Posted by Nancy at December 2, 2011 9:11 PMDepends on the effect you're going for, but I personally prefer without the black. It lets the colors blend and dance as they please. They're both gorgeous, though, and good luck choosing!
Posted by Cathryn at December 2, 2011 9:11 PMI say - black only on the bottom border. I like the look of the design itself without the black. Hoping to see more of this soon.
Posted by Phyllis at December 2, 2011 9:12 PMI like the one without the black. I think it is gorgeous-just like the rest of your patterns :)
Posted by minimerlin at December 2, 2011 9:19 PMI know I'm in the minority, but I love the one without black...more casual and fun!
Posted by Denise at December 2, 2011 9:22 PMWITHOUT!! My son agrees with me, too. I love it without the black in between.
Without: it shows up the shape of the colors nicely.
Posted by Catherine at December 2, 2011 9:28 PMWith the black. Can't wait to see the result! :)
Posted by Gini at December 2, 2011 9:31 PMWithout black. I like color spillage.
Posted by Marty at December 2, 2011 9:33 PMBlack for sure!
Posted by Amanda at December 2, 2011 9:34 PMWith the black! Stained glass for sure! :-)
Posted by Kat1e at December 2, 2011 9:34 PMBoth are pretty, bu the black is retire.
Posted by Kate B at December 2, 2011 9:35 PMJust love auto correct! Should be prettier, not retire!
Posted by Kate B at December 2, 2011 9:36 PMOh gosh, so many comments already, but I definitely vote for the black! I love the stained glass effect.
Posted by Alicia at December 2, 2011 9:43 PMI usually prefer with black for the colour-popping contrast... but not this time. Without. (Or maybe one of each??)
Posted by Linda at December 2, 2011 9:49 PMWith
Posted by Elizabeth at December 2, 2011 9:50 PMLooks like with is winning. I like them both, but I really, really love without black because it reminds me of William Morris wallpaper or a Frank Lloyd Wright design. But it really depends upon what you are going to make.
Posted by Rebecca at December 2, 2011 9:50 PMWithout the black - much better.
Posted by DCF at December 2, 2011 9:51 PMNo black - much less obvious. (Although the black is very pretty)
Posted by catspaw at December 2, 2011 9:54 PMI vote for without the black - much more unique-looking that way, in my opinion. The other kind of looks like the slipped stitch pattern in the ballband dishcloth.
And thanks for all these Christmas gift ideas...
for myself!! I have a feeling my stocking is going to be filled with awesome stuff this year ;)
Posted by Juile Poole at December 2, 2011 9:58 PMWithout, methinks. The colors run together nicely then.
Posted by Gail at December 2, 2011 10:00 PMGo with the black. Really works well!
Posted by Ann at December 2, 2011 10:15 PMI much prefer the more colorful (to me) one without the black. However, both are quite nice.
Posted by sassyspins at December 2, 2011 10:16 PMWith black!
Posted by margieinmaryland at December 2, 2011 10:16 PMI like it with the black. I'm not sure what you are making but I like it and already think I would like to knit it for myself.
Posted by Barbara at December 2, 2011 10:17 PMWith the black!
Also, thanks for the notes about the Ablet! There is now one with my name on it, somewhere between there and here!
Posted by Terry at December 2, 2011 10:33 PMI like the swatch with the black the best. If you're going to go to the work of using all those different colors, I would really want them to pop so everyone noticed all the work.
Posted by Aimee at December 2, 2011 10:41 PMWith the black, like stained glass. Maybe in rainbow stripes!
Posted by Janet at December 2, 2011 10:45 PMI didn't read all the comments - you get to do that, lucky woman! I vote for the one with the black outline; it really sings! Happy knitting. BTW, I love your shopping hints.
Posted by physicsmom at December 2, 2011 10:51 PMI would choose without the black. It looks less regimental and more feminine to me.
I enjoying your holiday posts!
Another vote for BLACK...or dark purple 8-)
Posted by Sandi at December 2, 2011 11:17 PMDon't know if you will get this far in the comments - but I vote for w/o the black.
Posted by Sue Remely at December 2, 2011 11:21 PMDefinitely with black.
Posted by Sheila at December 2, 2011 11:26 PMJust read through your archives... my eyes may fall out of my head from overuse but I have been laughing so hard it hurts, thank you!
And I really like it without the black :)
Posted by Sheila at December 2, 2011 11:28 PMDefinitely with the black. Colors really pop!
Posted by Teira at December 2, 2011 11:29 PMWithout the black!
Are you going to count all of these votes??
Posted by Marilyn at December 2, 2011 11:32 PMWithout the black!!
Posted by Marilyn at December 2, 2011 11:33 PMWITH! LOVE (1,000,000)
Posted by Jenny at December 2, 2011 11:37 PMWithout.
Posted by Amy R at December 2, 2011 11:37 PMWith. I like the stained-glass effect.
Posted by Kathy at December 2, 2011 11:37 PMBlack I think - but then I do stained glass.
Posted by Pat at December 2, 2011 11:48 PMTotally with the black. It makes the other colors pop.
Posted by Sharon V at December 2, 2011 11:57 PMWith black, no matter what kind of garment. I also want to know what colors of Cascade 220 you are using! Please?
Posted by Clare at December 3, 2011 12:06 AMWith the black. Definitely.
Posted by susan at December 3, 2011 12:08 AMOrdinarily, I'd say with the black, because I like the stained glass window look. However, the colours you've chosen and the way you've lined them up (dark to light to dark) look FANTASTIC without. I love the way they flow together without interruption.
Posted by Jaemi at December 3, 2011 12:34 AMWith the black!
Posted by Lisa R at December 3, 2011 12:36 AMAbsolutely, most definitely with the black, or maybe without.
Posted by Sharon at December 3, 2011 1:14 AMAbsolutely, most definitely with the black, or maybe without. In the close-ups I like without the black, but from a distance I like it with the black. Glad I could help you out here!
I ♥ the black version.
Posted by Geri at December 3, 2011 1:36 AMThe black version, definitely!
Posted by Kelly at December 3, 2011 2:35 AMHi, Stephanie,
I like them both, but the black one I like the most. Mittens? Hat? Both in a set? Tubular scarf? Socks? All good Christmas choices. BTW I have 12 pairs of socks in my Santa's bag, and the 13th on the needles. So, you know I would do it as socks.

I vote for another swatch with an entirely different background color - like one of the blues in your pic of the caked yarns.
With the black, no doubts.
Posted by Stella at December 3, 2011 4:43 AMBack in black!!! AC DC can't be wrong...
Posted by Zoe at December 3, 2011 5:04 AMWith the black, definitely- reminds me of coals and stained glass and the warm that's lacking right now...
Posted by Tara at December 3, 2011 5:18 AMDefinately WITHOUT the black, for some reason it just seems to "pop" for me!
Posted by SusieQ100 at December 3, 2011 6:13 AMDefinitely with the black - gorgeous!
Posted by booksprink at December 3, 2011 6:17 AMWith the black! Winter is coming. (Am I the only one to think of A Game of Thrones when reading this?)
Posted by Juliane at December 3, 2011 6:21 AMLoving the black but not knowing the final article or purpose makes it difficult to say?
Gift idea for the crochet folks out there

This woman does beautiful work!! Mails worldwide & is just a lovely person.
No I do not get a commission LOL

I am one of those that likes it without the black. The colors are really pretty the way they are and I am onboard with the person that said it looked a little "pac mannish" with the black. Of course it would be easier to say if I knew what the devil you were starting with only 3 weeks until Christmas!
Posted by WeezKnits at December 3, 2011 6:36 AMI'm liking the stained glass version. Depends on the project. Blanket - stained glass? Scarf or socks? Without the black. Either way can't wait to see what you come up with!
Posted by Jules at December 3, 2011 6:45 AMI'm voting with WeezKnits. Just the black border is enough black. Lovely colours all together!
Posted by Banofee at December 3, 2011 6:51 AMI like without better With makes it look more like bobbles. Not that I have anything against bobbles. I just really prefer the uninterrupted flow of the one without black.
Posted by Athena at December 3, 2011 6:58 AMI like it without the black.
Posted by Sue at December 3, 2011 7:31 AMBLACK! With the black it looks so current and just fantastic. I want to make one. Do the colors travel in the back so that only one side looks good? I do not usually do color work, but I sure want to learn. This makes me crazy. I want to run out and buy yarn and make it! And there isn't a pattern :>(
Posted by Marsha at December 3, 2011 7:37 AMOH no, I just realized it is a sock. I want it to be a scarf!
Posted by marsha at December 3, 2011 7:38 AMI like the swatch WITHOUT the black. The flow of colors is smoother.
You have chosen beautiful colors to counter the dreary weather you've mentioned lately!
Posted by Bonnie H. at December 3, 2011 7:46 AMYou dont need my 2cents- but I vote for the black!
Both are so pretty, but I'm loving the black more. Thanks for posting all these gifts for knitters too. Makes me covet even more lol.
Posted by Tara at December 3, 2011 8:11 AMWith!
Posted by violinknitter at December 3, 2011 8:32 AMOh I love how the colors pop with the black! And thanks for the gift ideas, hubby and family are getting copies.
Posted by Syd at December 3, 2011 8:42 AMI love, love, love the black and colours!
Posted by Appaloosa at December 3, 2011 8:49 AMBlack! Black! Black! It is gorgeous with the black!
Posted by Alyson at December 3, 2011 8:54 AMWithout the black reminds me of a nice warm fire in the winter. Without black is my vote.
Posted by gretchen at December 3, 2011 9:13 AMWith the black
Posted by Ellen at December 3, 2011 9:31 AMWith the black - it makes the colors really pop.
Posted by CaroleD at December 3, 2011 9:35 AMBoth are good, depends on what you're making. With the black is obviously heavier in appearance and suitable for afghans, blankets, pillows, a jacket perhaps (?) but the pattern without the black is more harmonious, lighter, prettier - lets one enjoy the colours themselves without the distraction of the black. I say, whichever suits the project best, as always.
Posted by StrongCat at December 3, 2011 9:39 AMLove it with the black--makes the colors pop!
Posted by Ruth in N.J. at December 3, 2011 10:05 AMwith black.
Posted by carolyn at December 3, 2011 10:08 AMI saw with the black...you can never go wrong with black...good luck!
Posted by Suzanne at December 3, 2011 10:19 AMMy fav is the one with the black as the Color really pops. I would save the other combo for a project where your goal is a more blended Color feature. Both are great and you highlighted the importance of playing with tests before beginning a full project.
Thanks
I like it best with the black.....can't wait to see what this will become.
Posted by Melanie at December 3, 2011 10:24 AMWinter is coming. Do I detect a Game of Thrones fan?
Posted by Delia at December 3, 2011 10:30 AMDespite usually loving black with anything, in this case I prefer the one without, just having the black as a border.
Posted by Melinda at December 3, 2011 10:32 AMWith the black. The colors really pop. Just finished your new book that Justin (Austin, Texas) bought for me. Loved it!!!
Posted by Donna at December 3, 2011 10:37 AMNormally like with the black.... But here I'd go without, looks kinda waves on the ocean-ish
Posted by Pauline at December 3, 2011 10:40 AMWith!
Posted by amber at December 3, 2011 10:42 AMWith black if sweater or larger. Without if scarf or something small.
Posted by Deborah Nelson at December 3, 2011 10:42 AMDEFINITELY with the black - makes it pop!
Posted by Monique at December 3, 2011 10:46 AMWithout the black, for sure! Usually I like the way the black makes the color pop, but not this time. Save the black for later.
Posted by Sherry in Idaho at December 3, 2011 10:52 AMAnother gift idea...someone makes a pendant that's actually three different sizes of cable needles. Wearing it around one's neck decreases the odds of it sneaking away to the universe of lost cable needles.
Posted by Mary Mary at December 3, 2011 10:55 AMDefinitely with the contrast, but what about a dark loden green instead of black?
Posted by lsj at December 3, 2011 11:00 AMNo black in between. I'm surprised to think that the colors pop more next to each other.
Posted by Laurie at December 3, 2011 11:03 AMwithout. definitely. and I'm surprised as normally I love how black punches the colours - but on this the colours and shapes all look lovely smoochy together - the black makes them look like odd sheep.
Posted by Jan Morrison at December 3, 2011 11:17 AMI'm not a multi color person, and don't like orange and yellow. I like the black at first, but without, the colors are unified and easier on the eye. The "with black" version would be good only in small doses.
Posted by Rosemary at December 3, 2011 11:29 AMBlack.
Posted by Jan at December 3, 2011 11:39 AMWithout even though both are beautiful!
Posted by michelle at December 3, 2011 11:45 AMWithout black. It's WINTER. Who needs more black. Plus orange and black remind me of Halloween.
Posted by Chloe at December 3, 2011 11:51 AMBlack, hands down!
With!!
Posted by Sheryl at December 3, 2011 11:53 AMWith the black. I like both color schemes, but I don't like the shape of the little balls, with no black. I don't like that one pointy stitch at the bottom. It lacks the beauty/symmetry of the black framed one. Good luck! You know this project won't just die.. I say push it forward, not backward.
Posted by Jessica Dion at December 3, 2011 11:56 AMThey are both very pretty, and the play of the colors is lovely. My own personal bias is without the extra black dividing the colors. "With" looks very nice, and is very traditional (though that stitch pattern for me is forever associated with wash cloths and towels). "Without" seems a little more unique, and much more striking. If you go that route, you may want to play with the idea of a periodic black band separating sections of color repeats (maybe after 5 rows of drops or so?) to add to the visual interest.
With that said...I'm assuming that you're using the comments as a sounding board and not as a binding vote. The final deciding factor really is who the ultimate recipient will be, and what best matches THEIR taste. Either way, the final product will be lovely (and I'm really hoping that you'll post at least the stitch patterns for both versions!).
Posted by MadTatter at December 3, 2011 11:57 AMThe black makes the colors go POP!
Posted by deb sheets at December 3, 2011 11:58 AMI have to just say it: WITH black!!
Posted by betty at December 3, 2011 12:11 PMWith the black!
Posted by Ki at December 3, 2011 12:17 PMI think without the black...my first instinct was with the black but I like the way the colours sit together and the shape of the individual balls of colour better without the black. Plus the black looks like other patterns done before...the colours together looks fresher and more inventive! :) Just my 2p. ;)
Posted by Edith at December 3, 2011 12:26 PMDefinitely WITH
Posted by Pauline at December 3, 2011 12:30 PMI vote for the black - it has better definition and crispness to my eye.
And condolences/congratulations on Amanda getting her own place. I remember how glad and sad I was the first time Noa moved out on his own. Another milestone met! Never ceases to amaze how quickly they go from crib to first lease.
Posted by Baraka at December 3, 2011 12:36 PMI like it with the black better! Lovely colors either way though
Posted by Holly at December 3, 2011 12:50 PMI loved it with the black, until I saw the swatch without black!
Might depend on the size of the piece, because "without" might be too much in a large piece.
Can't wait to see the final result!
With black
Posted by Marta at December 3, 2011 12:59 PMWithout, it has more of a Baby Light My Fire look to it. Hunka Hunka Burning Love to knit.
Posted by AlisonH at December 3, 2011 1:04 PMWith the black, if you're still reading comments !
WITH the black! I love the way it makes the other colors stand out. Your idea would make great socks (always my first impulse). I can also see it as mittens, a hat or even a sweater (but there's no time for sweater knitting this month). I.can't wait to see what you make.
Posted by Nancy at December 3, 2011 1:21 PMAnother vote for without.
Posted by Laine at December 3, 2011 1:22 PMwithout!
Posted by janice at December 3, 2011 1:47 PMThe swatch with black looks a little too familiar. There's something fresh about the other!
Posted by CSK at December 3, 2011 1:55 PMIf you are looking for warmth, Without. (It looks like fire.) Otherwise, With has more style.
Posted by Judith B at December 3, 2011 2:08 PMAll about stained glass windows!!!!
Posted by JennyB at December 3, 2011 2:18 PMSocks = without black
Mittens = with black
With!!! :-)
Posted by Trish at December 3, 2011 2:33 PMI'm with those who like black. Your swatches reminded me of years ago knitting toe mittens for one of our family members with their leg/ankle in a cast. I've always liked swatches to get gauge, but this opens up a whole new category of usefulness.
Posted by Ardi at December 3, 2011 2:44 PMMy vote is no black...the colours are
poetry
With black, definitely! Makes the colors pop and I love how they look like tiny bits of stained glass. I can see that as a mitten cuff ...
Posted by Anne at December 3, 2011 3:40 PMWithout looking at any of the other comments, I think I like the one without the black better. Although, if you asked me tomorrow, I might change my mind. I like them both.
Posted by marjorie at December 3, 2011 3:40 PMWith. :)
Posted by deborah at December 3, 2011 3:42 PMUmmmm, Christmas is coming pretty quickly - which one knits up quicker?
from the really slow knitter who is still trying to figure out how to carry a sock on double-pointed needles everywhere without stitches dropping off them every so often ...
Posted by LynneW at December 3, 2011 3:43 PMI like the one with the black for a hat, and without for a scarf. So I think with the black for small areas, maybe, and without for something larger.
Posted by Candi at December 3, 2011 3:44 PMWith the black, except that I would make it navy instead.
Posted by Caralyn at December 3, 2011 3:49 PMWith the black. Decisions, decisions...
Posted by Jenink at December 3, 2011 3:49 PMDefinitely with the black. It seems to pop more :)
Posted by Anna at December 3, 2011 3:52 PMI like it with the black, but both are nice. Compulsive knitting! Love it!
Posted by Helena at December 3, 2011 3:59 PMblack is the new black, the one without just does not sing the way the one with the black does!
Posted by sharon at December 3, 2011 4:09 PMWith the black!
Posted by Sara at December 3, 2011 4:19 PMwith the black - I have seen a baby blanket in this stitch in various shades of green and blue with the black, and it was really beautiful.
Posted by Fancy at December 3, 2011 4:22 PMBlack...they look like the backend of dyed sheep and sometimes they look like trees.
Posted by cecelia at December 3, 2011 4:53 PMDefinitely with the black, it reminds me of a monarch butterfly's wing
Posted by Jess at December 3, 2011 5:01 PMMittens? use the 3 colors as a stripe, bordered in black, for the hands. (Fingers and thumb black, I think.) The stripe idea would make a nice matching hat.
With the black it does pop more, but depending on your result, will it pop too much?
Both are lovely, when you get right down to it. What are you going to do with all those other lovely colors?
I'm not going to wade through 600 comments, and I doubt you will either. I vote for the one without the black, although I think my color scheme would be somewhat rainbow-ish with all the primary colors, and might look, oh, I don't know...like I was carrying around a leprechaun in my pocket?
Anyway, beyond that, using the black "here and there" might help break up the colors from struggling against each other--perhaps a burst of color here and there (or if it's a scarf, color only on the ends). But I suppose it would help to know what you're making too.
Posted by Tenna at December 3, 2011 5:30 PMIt appears that this goes without saying, but... certainly, with the black. Happy Holidays :)
Posted by Tara at December 3, 2011 5:41 PMI love it without the black. And THANK YOU for the gift ideas, I've told my husband and kids to read your blog. I'm hoping they'll get an idea or two.
Posted by Laurie at December 3, 2011 6:08 PMHi Stephanie,
Hubster loves the black but I like the pure pops of colour edged by the black :0)
Looking forward to hearing more about the idea :00
Love Mel x x
Ok, didn't read all 500+ but I am hoping that NO BLACK between is winning. That is my favorite by far but I could not give you a reason if I had to! Guess I don't like all the colors being "seperated". There is enough of that in this world in other things. Let the colors go! LOL
Posted by SnargleMom at December 3, 2011 6:17 PMI like both because I always like stained glass effects but I prefer without this time. It's brighter.
Posted by Diana at December 3, 2011 7:15 PMI prefer the version with black, because it has more depth, and the colours look like jewels or lights against the winter night sky. (I'm a huge fan of Christmas outdoor lights, as well, because they make things much more cheerful. I wish people would leave them on through March.)
Some years ago, there was a company making rhinestone pins that spelled out words, and I kick myself that I never got the one saying "YARN DIVA". (I never got one that said anything, in any case.) I keep hoping one will turn-up in second-hand store frequented by one of my friends, who will buy it for me as a prank gift and then be astonished when I fall over in glee.
Posted by Ted at December 3, 2011 7:51 PMI vote for with, though both are quite nice.
Posted by Leigh at December 3, 2011 7:57 PMDefinitely without black. It looks too polka-doty with the black. I like all the colors supporting each other together. :)
Posted by Terri at December 3, 2011 8:09 PMLooks like my comment won't be necessary at this point - but I'd vote BLACK!
Posted by deb at December 3, 2011 8:19 PMWithout. I like the vintage feel.
Posted by Laura at December 3, 2011 8:40 PMWithout the black ! Reminds me of a crackling fire......
Posted by Jenny at December 3, 2011 8:43 PMWITH!! Love the black!
Posted by Kristen E at December 3, 2011 9:00 PMWith the black...looks like a fine stain glass!
Posted by Mary at December 3, 2011 9:58 PMThe black.
Posted by eva at December 3, 2011 10:08 PMI like the way the colors move along "without the black".
Posted by Anne at December 3, 2011 10:31 PMWith, with, WITH black!
Posted by Erin at December 3, 2011 10:57 PMTough choice, but I think I like the sample with the black, making the bubbles of color look like stained glass.
I used that stitch pattern -- in a much less interesting color combo -- on a pair of mittens:
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/kmkat/dimorphous-mittens
I agree with the black votes. Love the stained-glass look.
Posted by Jo at December 3, 2011 11:47 PMWith the blank, definitely.
The one without reminds me of granny squares (which I do like), but I think with the knitting the 1 stitch at the bottom of each colour looks odd, out of place somehow.
Dieing to see what it will become!
Posted by Ninjabex at December 3, 2011 11:50 PMThanks for mentioning our knitting abacus in your blog, Stephanie. I've been a big fan of your writing for a long time now.
If you tell hubby to email us your favourite colours, I'll design a style just for you! You may find one in your stocking.
;)

I love the Sassafras bits and bobs (especially some of the earrings) but they also remind me a little bit of the sadistic neighbor kid from the original Toy Story movie. (maybe that's part of their appeal for me!) :)
Thank you for your devotion to us, the knitters who will be gifted this Christmas!
Posted by Kristy at December 4, 2011 12:54 AMWithout please; it looks so warm and cozy and firey good. Maybe it wants a rich, dark sable brown for the borders instead of the black?
Posted by kere at December 4, 2011 1:13 AMDefinitely with black - it reminds me of stained glass too.
Posted by Lorraine Weir at December 4, 2011 1:38 AMOh dear please don't listen to all those who said with the black!! I love black myself but in this case WITHOUT the black.
Posted by Rachael at December 4, 2011 3:39 AMWithout black
Posted by Susie, UK at December 4, 2011 5:57 AMVersion with black. It looks so pretty. Can't wait to see what you make.
Posted by Nancy va at December 4, 2011 8:15 AMThe black really makes the colors pop! Both are pretty.
Posted by Merwin at December 4, 2011 8:53 AMHoly Sheep! I don't normally look at comments—or make one—but your request for opinions on which method to use made me look at the comment counter at the bottom. When I saw over 600 comments I had to check it out. Wow! Is somebody keeping track of which version got more votes? Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, thank goodness you use your power for good.
Posted by Peony at December 4, 2011 9:03 AMwithout the black.
Posted by cheryl berg at December 4, 2011 9:10 AMBoth are pretty, but I like without the black best.
Posted by Pat at December 4, 2011 9:29 AMNo black...looks more "youthful".
Posted by Connie at December 4, 2011 9:37 AMI am always a sucker for the stained glass look. The black makes the colours pop!
Posted by Boo's Mom at December 4, 2011 9:49 AMTough decision. Personally I like the one with black.
Posted by Knittripps at December 4, 2011 10:41 AMWithout the black! both look great, but I like the more subdued look without the black...
Posted by angelbis at December 4, 2011 10:45 AMNo doubt about it for me, with the black.
Posted by Jeremy at December 4, 2011 10:50 AMAbsolutely NO black - it overwhelms the beautiful colors
Posted by Anne at December 4, 2011 10:59 AMWith the black. Definitely.
Posted by Gear at December 4, 2011 11:12 AMBeautiful without the black. Although the black is also attractive, I find it a more jarring effect to look at. And maybe a bit dated? I think it would "wear on the eyes" sooner than the other one.
Posted by Marie at December 4, 2011 11:17 AMDefinitely with the black.Makes the other colors pop out!
Posted by di wolter at December 4, 2011 11:52 AMgo with the one with the black. I think it looks more interesting than the one without.
Posted by chloe at December 4, 2011 11:53 AMWith.
Posted by Martha0051 at December 4, 2011 12:17 PMWithout...just cuz!
Posted by delia at December 4, 2011 12:26 PMYou didn't seriously count all these reply, did you? My random selection of the 621 comments here is with the black, which is the right answer.
Posted by Linda Healey at December 4, 2011 1:03 PMBoth? The without looks like a cuff, the stained glass portion could be the mittens, or maybe some other pattern there (is that what the project is?...that may affect the preference.)
Posted by Amanda at December 4, 2011 2:26 PMWITH the black!
Posted by Kathy at December 4, 2011 5:51 PMI like the black but hubby who makes web page stuff liked without.
Posted by Cheryl at December 4, 2011 6:01 PMI love the black!
Posted by ErikaC at December 4, 2011 6:35 PMI like the black the best.
Posted by Judy M at December 4, 2011 6:39 PMthe black just makes those colors pop!
Posted by marianne at December 4, 2011 7:05 PMI like the black........Do the blacks win?
Posted by Arlene Oswald at December 4, 2011 7:13 PMBlack. Definitely with the black. After all, how many other people can say that they wear stained-glass mittens (just an abstract guess here)?
Posted by Mallory at December 4, 2011 9:31 PMWithout black
Posted by Susan713 at December 4, 2011 10:01 PMOoh, so many comments. Does poor Natalie have to tally them up in categories?
I prefer the version with black. But the other one might be nice if the colour combo is''just so'. No, not really helpful, I know, sorry.
Love your 'dear non-knitter' series. I'm leaving prints of it around the house.......
I like the way the colours pop wit the black, but the without black reminds me somehow of upsidedown scale mail. Winter Is Coming.
Posted by tiff at December 5, 2011 10:23 AMI like it with the black. I think it makes the colors pop more. Thanks too for the non-knitter gift tips.
Can't wait to see what happens in 36 hours.
Posted by Kate Mc at December 5, 2011 10:36 AMGo with your gut!
Would you mind telling us what yarn that is?
It's so beautiful :-)
Black, definitely - it adds that extra oomph. Although I'm sure it will be beautiful either way.
Posted by Ten Words at December 5, 2011 11:53 AMWithout the black. As a winter-warmer scarf, I'd go for firey-bright. The black might look better with purples and pinks. Here, though, let the color blaze!
Posted by Michelle at December 5, 2011 12:30 PMMy eyes keep going to the one with the black so I guess it depends on if you want that part to stand out.
Posted by Julie at December 5, 2011 1:44 PMI love the without black better, because I like the shape of the scallops better that way. Maybe if you did the full scallop shape with the spacing and the plain black row (so it looks like each scallop is bordered by the black but still comes to a point) it would be better.
Posted by Seanna Lea at December 5, 2011 2:16 PMThey both look kind of 1972 - is that what you're aiming for?
Posted by kittenknit at December 6, 2011 1:34 AMI like the black and I LOVE the series for non-knitters. Been emailing the posts to my husband, you know... for inspiration.
Posted by Simply Gabriela - Living La Vida Normal at December 6, 2011 1:56 AMWith the black!!! Definitely with the black! I have been reading your blog for years, and this is the first comment I have ever left. THAT is how much I think you should go for the black.
Posted by Jamie at December 6, 2011 6:33 AMI love the black and violet one but then the orange one without black is lovely. Oh I don't know but I do know that I NEED that pattern! Where can we buy it?
Posted by Lily at December 6, 2011 12:22 PMLove the mittens with the black - more definition.
Posted by Tracy at December 6, 2011 4:52 PMWithout the black.
Posted by Nicki at December 6, 2011 10:28 PMReally difficult choice... I think I'd need one of each! The black does have that nice crisp and bright stained glass look, but the softness of the other might offset some styles better. Are all your decisions so tough? Great blog. So glad to have found it.
Posted by Wendy Harrington at December 6, 2011 10:43 PMI think the black is quite lovely, but in my house it is a fur magnent. Three cats ( one furry Persian and two shorthairs ), a Pekingese, and a Japanese Chin contribute more than their share to my FURniture and anything dark in colour. I think you need to move to the US and give Pres. Obama much needed help on the health care issues. I had been without insurance after our factory was bought by a Norwegian company, and we all lost our jobs and benefits. Not being able to access affordable insurance means you can't afford health care. You are so wise and talented!!!
Posted by baglady at December 7, 2011 2:00 AMFirst time I've commented, read you often and attended sox class when you were in Sacramento. I love the no black look.
Posted by Leslie at December 8, 2011 1:03 AMI know that I'm a little late but I prefer the one without the black, except at the cuff. That said, I have to admit that they are both beautiful!
Posted by Stephanie at December 11, 2011 7:23 PMImpressive brain power at work! Great awnser!
