Comments: Not What I Planned

I love the color. It's so happy and bright and will be perfect for the beautiful scenery you'll be in. Good luck on the driving plan!

I always remember how you loved the "yarn pockets" on your new car! My boyfriend always drives on trips, but wants me to not knit so I can talk to him. I try to explain that, if he can drive and talk, I can knit and talk! At least the sort of knitting I would bring- no lace camping. Have fun on your trip!

Posted by vicki in portland at May 25, 2012 10:20 AM

I agree that I was more willing to drive back when I didn't knit as much. These days, it seems kind of like a waste of time! Next trip, you'll choose your copilot more carefully. Have a fun trip!

Posted by ccr in MA at May 25, 2012 10:27 AM

My husband doesn't knit but is an avid reader. It is also difficult to get him to drive the whole way when we take long trips.

Posted by Michelle at May 25, 2012 10:28 AM

Have a safe trip. I think you should definitely share the driving! Please post pictures of your destination. I would love to see pictures of North Bay in the springtime!

Posted by Lisa H. at May 25, 2012 10:29 AM

Wow, Stephanie, that first picture is not going to change many people's stereotypes of Canada! Hahahaha. I hope you have a lovely trip - it would be nice to see the north woods! I'm gearing up for my first Memorial Day weekend as an American resident: it's supposed to be over 30 C this weekend so I am planning to hit the beaches of Madison!

shawl is stunning. enjoy the beautiful drive and meeting more knitters in their natural habitat.

and THAT is why we need driverless cars like they have in Masdar City. More knitting time for all!

Oh the black flies, the little black flies, always the black flies no matter where you go; I'll die with the black flies pickin' my bones in north Ontario....

Just saying....

I think the solution to getting knitters to carpool is to rent a bus :D

That was the solution for some Indiana knitters who wanted to go to Stitches Midwest.

Posted by deepbluerenegade at May 25, 2012 11:06 AM

Oh, make her take the wheel. Bring that vast DPN collection or something. Tell her you've got very important readers who want to see your knitting.

Have a great trip! I'll be spending Memorial Day weekend not far from Lake Tahoe. Seventy percent chance of snow. Come to think of it, we were there last year on this very date and got hit with a blizzard. . .

Posted by stashdragon at May 25, 2012 11:28 AM

lucky the knitter who can go on knitting in a moving vehicle! I can barely look at my phone for 30 secs before feeling queasy...

Posted by tripazia at May 25, 2012 11:32 AM

I'm so glad to know that the snow photo is the LAST time you were there, not this time. Hope you have a great time!

Posted by Rhonda from Baddeck at May 25, 2012 11:32 AM

Have a marvelous trip! And thank you for the holiday wishes for those of us south of you. ^_^

Posted by KathyC at May 25, 2012 11:34 AM

I have this uncanny ability to convince non knitters to drive most of the time, especially on long trips. They are really confused about it afterwards when it slowly dawns on them. Then they feel tricked as they should. I'm not proud of it but whatever it takes.

Oh geez, when you said you had a sidekick you might be able to scam into driving, I thought you were talking about a Schacht Sidekick for a moment. Mighty confusing!! I need more coffee, clearly. Have fun this weekend!

Posted by Mary-Heather at May 25, 2012 11:36 AM

I'm very lucky that my guy loves to drive (loves!) so I get chauffeured everywhere and it's awesome. Of course, at least half the time I'm working on socks for him, so it is to his benefit as well :)

Posted by Caryl at May 25, 2012 11:38 AM

I always con people into driving for me!! It usually goes something like this: I drive and make some sudden, scary manuvers and out nowhere, I am not driving anymore! In particular I like the wheel turns and you drive to where you are looking manuver. Works like a charm!! :)

Posted by sweetpeajenny at May 25, 2012 11:40 AM

Never been to North Bay, but I remember very fondly a couple trips to Tobermory and the Bruce Peninsula just to the west.

Well... relatively speaking I suppose. From Seattle, Tobermory and North Bay seem almost like neighbors when the reality is that it would take several hours to drive between them! I guess visually I imagine the scenery being similar.

Have a great time!

Posted by Stuart at May 25, 2012 11:44 AM

If I lived closer, I would be your driver. I can't knit while riding in a car. :)

Posted by Kate at May 25, 2012 11:49 AM

Well, as I have labyrinthites, I always like to drive, because I cannot knit on moving transports... :-P
Want me to drive?? lol

Posted by Lia Domingues at May 25, 2012 11:53 AM

Enjoy being up north! How wonderful to see blue and green again!

Posted by Missy at May 25, 2012 12:07 PM

I tease my husband about learning to knit, but I'm actually terrified that he might someday, & then where would that leave me on road trips? That's the bulk of my knitting time these days.

Posted by Samina at May 25, 2012 12:29 PM

This is a big weekend for many of us south of the border. It is the start of summer! Trips to the beach, mountains, lakes, outdoor pools open up, all kinds of good times start. It is also Memorial Day when we remember all those who served in the armed services and we get to thank and remember the people who made all the above possible. Have a great weekend and remember to thank a veteran.

Posted by Maureen at May 25, 2012 12:30 PM

North Bay is my hometown! Haven't been up in years, but would absolutely love to see it, in any season (THAT's how much I love North Bay!).

Have a wonderful weekend!

Posted by Karen at May 25, 2012 12:36 PM

For a minute I was worried you were heading in the direction of the massive fires in northern Ontario, and then I checked the map and discovered that North Bay isn't really all that far north. Have a great road trip.

Whine about how you have to rest and get mentally ready to speak. Guilt usually works with adults; not so much with children.

Posted by Leta at May 25, 2012 1:06 PM

Posted by Julie at May 25, 2012 1:07 PM

It was scary to see that picture of you in the frozen north. For just a minute I was worried you had booked a speaking tour in the high Arctic. :-)

Posted by kristieinbc at May 25, 2012 1:08 PM

Have a wonderful time, and wow, the doubletake on that photo at this time of year! Too funny!

Posted by AlisonH at May 25, 2012 1:12 PM

Boy, you hit it with the knitting co-pilot thing!!! I'm going to Squam next week with a friend (via Niagara Falls.....KY-Buffalo-NH); we'll be lucky to make it; we'll both want to be the "navigator" (ahem.....that's the knitter!) If we do make it, I'll see you Thursday; I'm not exactly "speed knitting" through my Omelet, either. (Started it months ago!) Maybe you can remedy that.

Posted by steph at May 25, 2012 1:29 PM

Have a lovely time! Amazing snowfields there in the background...a good reminder to those of us broiling farther south to keep on knitting!

Posted by alison at May 25, 2012 1:52 PM

Don't forget your bra.

Posted by Presbytera at May 25, 2012 2:34 PM

I'm lucky. I married a control freak when it comes to the car. He doesn't want anyone else to drive. Ok by me. :-)

I used to read but that was before I started to knit. A long road trip sounds like a good idea. I need to plan one.

Posted by Robbie at May 25, 2012 2:50 PM

Stephanie, in the photo advertising your talk, the blue sweater you are wearing--is that pattern available somewhere? Thanks!

Please wave to our old trailer park on your way north! When you get to Katrine, it's on the right, way back off the main road. :) I miss Owl Lake and our trips to North Bay.

Posted by samm at May 25, 2012 5:49 PM

Your omelet has inspired me to get back to my shawl. Although driving or not, I'm sure yours will be done and blocked way before I finish the chart repeat I'm on. And I've got the weekend off.

Posted by seeherknit at May 25, 2012 6:00 PM

I know you'll have a great time. I love to see the omelette growing exponentially. Just a few more repeats and it will be perfectly beautiful.

Memorial Day is particularly important this year. So much has happened and so much is about to happen good and bad. I just hope we all keep thinking about what is really important...on both sides of the northern border.

Keep knitting, weaving, crocheting and anything else that brings something beautiful into being.

Hmm is anyone else having problems with the pictures on this blog loading? I'm trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it's the blog. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by CREREEATTAIRM at May 25, 2012 10:37 PM

We actually plan who drives which leg on our road trips by the road conditions so I can get in more knitting. I don't knit in canyons with switchbacks but I can drive without getting carsick.
That shawl is lovely. Have a great trip.

The wife, kid, and I were supposed to fly out to visit my parents, who live 2 hours north of Seattle, next month. Her work got in the way and it started to look like wife wasn't going to be able to go.

I admit that the thought of flying 10+ hours alone with a 14 month old and then driving the two hours did not make me happy. But honestly, the first thing I thought about when she told me she might not be able to come was the fact that I wasn't going to be able to knit on the drive from Seattle to the 'rents house.

Luckily, things worked out and she is coming with us. Yeah! Knitting!

Posted by Barb at May 26, 2012 12:38 AM

It's a really good thing my husband doesn't knit. I love our road trips and I really love my shotgun position with pointy sticks in my lap.

One of the joys of being married the first time was he was a TERRIBLE passenger. I got an awful lot of knitting and quilting done those 8 years! Omelet is so beautiful so far, I'm wondering what's in my stash...

My boyfriend likes to drive. :)

Posted by Riin at May 27, 2012 3:03 PM

I second the above person who said that their boyfriend likes to drive! :) And has accepted that me knitting does not mean I'm ignoring him or that I'm bored. :)

Actually, though, I went on a road trip to VT sheep and wool last year, and we split up the driving pretty evenly. Actually, one gal loves to drive, so she drove most of the way. :)

Ah, you made me homesick for northern ontario. I used to live in Sudbury, then Kitchener, now in Oregon, soon to move to Colorado.

North Bay?!!!!! That's ONLY 3 hours "south" of where we live...LOL!!!! Soooo near....BUT soooo far!! Hope you had a grrrreat w/e Stephanie!!...(:

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Posted by bayan escort at May 28, 2012 5:49 PM

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Posted by bayan escort at May 29, 2012 1:54 AM

The driving is yet another reason that teleportation would be so awesome. You'd get there faster, and be able to get a bit more knitting time.

Unfortunately, you would no longer get to see all the interesting sites along the road as you travel.

Posted by Seanna Lea at May 29, 2012 9:26 AM

I like driving...besides I wouldn't get much knitting done in the passenger front seat, now maybe put me in the back where there's more space and air, I might be a happy camper. That would only make the driver feel like a hired hack though.

Posted by MB@YarnUiPhoneApp at May 29, 2012 9:28 AM

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
