I've decided that with all the bookbookbookbook going on in the comments that I would finally have to deal with the rumour that I'm writing a book.
I can absolutely 100% DENY that I am writing a book. The truth is,
I already wrote it! (Kindly insert maniacal, hysterical laughter here)
By the way? No matter how hysterical you imagined that laughter, I assure you that you didn't even come close. This is the cover of my very own book, being published by Storey Publishing and being distributed by Workman in the US and Thomas Allen in Canada. Every time I look at it I get a little woozy.
The book is so real that it has it's own page in the sales Catalogue. This truly freaks me out. Truly.
(I made this a thumbnail in case you didn't want your whole page eaten up by the dumb catalogue page that I love but you don't care about. Click if you care. Cruise on by if you don't). The book "officially" comes out in March, but you should be able to see in on Amazon in a few weeks. (I can't believe I just typed that. It's like a dream, except I don't think it would have been so much work in my dream...)
I am proud like you wouldn't believe....and I really need to have a little lie down now.
Gifts for knitters Day 3,4 and 5 (it's the weekend, I'm stickin' extra in.)
Very funky jewellery for knitters.
The Sheep Thrills mug from here. (Which is very cool and on my table right now)
These. 24K gold knitting needles. Only $2,585. (Thanks Kat...I'll run right out and get them. Maybe 2 pair. Hell, I'm a writer now.)

YOU ROCK, STEPHANIE!!!! If I buy the book and mail it to you, would you sign it and mail it back? Oh, I can't think of anything better to own, besides a thrummed mitten kit! CONGRATULATIONS! You are more on par with a yarn goddess than a yarn harlot now!
Posted by: sue at December 3, 2004 12:02 PMbookbookbookbookbookbookbookbookbook! How AWESOME and AMAZING is that!?! and it'll be out just in time for my birthday. I'll be sending out reverse birthday presents this year! congrats!
Posted by: carolyn at December 3, 2004 12:04 PMbook... book...book?
WHEN IS IT COMING OUT????
That's awesome Stephanie, I can't wait to buy the book. I hope you will still come and SnB with us even though you are a published author now
Posted by: Dani at December 3, 2004 12:05 PMCrap! I was just about to swipe your image and stick it on my blog under a big bold title along the lines of "to the person who picked my name in the gift exchange, hey doesn't this book look cool?", then I go to the part where we can't actually buy it yet. Sigh. So I guess I'll have to delve into your hint suggestions instead and buy the book for myself later.
Congratulations! I'm sure I'm not the only one who can hardly wait for it.
Posted by: jodi at December 3, 2004 12:09 PMokay, I jumped the gun. March. When in March? What cities are you touring? Where when how? Spill.
Posted by: Cassie at December 3, 2004 12:10 PMWahoo! My warmest heartfelt congratulations to you, Dear Stephanie. I can't wait to preorder 10 copies. I'm so glad you put this up before I hit the road. I couldn't have stood to be driving five hours and not having known this!!!! I'm so proud of you and I know this will be a BIG HIT.
Posted by: Norma at December 3, 2004 12:11 PMI am so far beyond impressed, I can hardly stand it. I will buy it!! Can't wait.
Posted by: Ginnie at December 3, 2004 12:15 PMI need a little lay down myself now. I think the first run is already sold out.
Posted by: valentina at December 3, 2004 12:17 PMLord liftin' love a duck! When I read the line, "I already wrote it", I physically felt a jolt of excitement. And then I leaned in to ensure I had read it properly! yay! A real, live book! Tell us, please, is there a book tour and if so, is it taking you to Atlantic Canada? Halifax/Dartmouth, perchance? If so, I'll be the one in line, wearing bells. hee hee!
Posted by: Stephanie VW at December 3, 2004 12:22 PMBookbookbookbookbookbookbookbookbook - YAY!
Now, there was never any question as to whether you were writing a book or not (I've been reading it, I even clicked all the way back to January 1, 2004, where it starts). There was not even any question as to whether you were writing a book that was going to hit paper (Storey Publishing don't just hang out with cool knitters, I'm sure).
But it's so nice to see its face. March 2005. Hmmm.... ...that may be a tad late for Christmas. I will, however, buy a dozen or so (Amazon doesn't have it listed, yet, FYI. I checked) and give them to deserving readers, most of whom don't knit.
And I predict a huge bestseller. Really. (I'm good at predicting bestsellers - I used to work in publishing, in another country, and have a pretty good hit rate...)
Posted by: Dena Shunra at December 3, 2004 12:22 PMCONGRATS!!!
Posted by: Kari at December 3, 2004 12:22 PMWow, Steph! That is truly an awesome surprise that it will be out soon. We'll be anxiously waiting and we know it will be a very popular book!
Posted by: margene at December 3, 2004 12:22 PMOh, amended to say... does your 8-city tour include Seattle? If not, why not? We knit a huge whole lot around here - AND buy a lot of books... (ok, I'm 3 hours from downtown... ...but still!)
Posted by: Dena Shunra at December 3, 2004 12:23 PMCongratulations! March is awfully far away though.
Posted by: Christina at December 3, 2004 12:23 PMAwesome! Can't wait to read it -- from a long-time lurker, first time commenter.
Posted by: Trudy at December 3, 2004 12:24 PMOh, yippee, yippee yippee!!! I am SO pleased, beyond pleased. And I really like the cover art which works really well with the upper title. I will say, however, that I do not believe that it is possible to knit too much!! Thanks heavens that the catalogue copy reveals that you do not believe it either!
The thumbnail page has some VERY interesting stuff one it! For example, do these publishers actually think that your meditations are "tongue-in-cheek"? Don't they knit? Here is where I confess that I have always assumed that you are absolutely serious but willing to see the humorous side of your seriousness! It also indicates an 8-city "Confession sessions" author tour -- Harlot-fans everywhere want to know: where will you be going??
I can seriously understand your need to lie down for a little now. You will let us know EXACTLY when it shows up on Amazon, right???
Posted by: Laurie at December 3, 2004 12:24 PMCongratulations on the bookbookbook! I will be pre-ordering a copy from Amazon. Be sure to let us know how you like those fancy knitterin needles.
Kat in Boston
Posted by: Kat at December 3, 2004 12:24 PMI have my fingers crossed that there will be a book tour.
I'm so excited for you!
Posted by: Christy at December 3, 2004 12:24 PMPUBLISHED!!! I would say that I am very excited to have it in my hot little hands, but that would be an understatement. So now, how about booktourbooktourbooktour?
Again, a thousand congrats-you truly are an amazing woman. All that you do, and you do it all so well.
Posted by: Teresa at December 3, 2004 12:25 PMCongratulations. That's so awesome. :) I'll definitely be joining the line of pre-orders at Amazon.
Posted by: Cathy at December 3, 2004 12:27 PMCongratulations! Mazel Tov! I remember very vividly the first time I went to a bookstore and picked up the journal that had my first published story in it. I started giggling and held it to my chest and did everything but burst into tears. And of course, I bought it. Even though I already had a million copies at home.
Can't wait to pick up a copy of your book. Again, congratulations. There is nothing better than seeing your words out in public on the page.
Posted by: Cara at December 3, 2004 12:28 PMOoooh, I'm with Cassie. Are you touring to promote it? Also, I'm curious: Did they make you change the Canadian spellings?
Posted by: Susan at December 3, 2004 12:30 PMCongratulations, Stephanie,
I can hardly wait for a portable copy of your wit and wisdom.
I too am on my way to Amazon, to pre-order, but I will still want to buy another copy, when your book signing tour comes my way.
All good wishes.
Hooray Harlot! This is truly awesome news and I can't wait. I already searched for it on Amazon (even though I know it won't show up yet). I'm hoping to create "a buzz" for you.
And a tour! This is truly exciting stuff!! I hope you visit the Pacific NW (we do a lot of knitting out here). We do have great coffee and chocolate...
Posted by: Laurie at December 3, 2004 12:33 PMCONGRATULATIONS, Stephanie! That is so exciting for you (and for me, as I can't wait to order it!)
Posted by: Bethany at December 3, 2004 12:37 PMSQUEE! *claps hands together and bounces up and down*

Posted by: Liz at December 3, 2004 12:42 PMBook? Book?! BOOK! BOOK! BOOK!
Mazel Tov! Mazel Tov!
Wait a minute, released in Canada in March 2005? I have to wait that long to get my grubby US hands on a copy?! Can I even *buy* it in March since I'm not a Canuck in Canukland?
Posted by: roggey at December 3, 2004 12:47 PMOH if you could see me now, standing on my chair clapping. Congratulations Stephanie, I've loved your published writings already and NOW a whole book. Guess what I'm gonna buy as soon as it hits the stands for all my knit friends :)
Also for your knitter gifts I got a wonderful knit gift from my best friend for my birthday this year. Check out:

It's very well made and I wear it daily.
Posted by: Anne at December 3, 2004 12:48 PMCongratulations on the book!!! Sure hope your 8 city tour will include Boston...I'll be sure to come see you.
(If that's not incentive...heh)
My friend and I faithfully read your blog each day. We both thought you must be a professional writer, because of your way with the English language...
too cool, and thanks for all of the gift ideas...they're awesome.
Posted by: Mary in Boston at December 3, 2004 12:49 PMCongratulations! I second Laurie & Dena that you need to come to the Pacific NW. I too would drive 3 hrs to Seattle if that was the city. Although the Portland/Vancouver area would be my personal pick! It's definitely going on my Amazon list today.

Posted by: Gina W at December 3, 2004 12:52 PMMost heartfelt congratulations. So very cool -- I've been looking forward to your 100 Things list, but this is even better. It'll be on my St. Patrick's Day gift list... I've never had one before, but I'm going to have one this year just for this! You must be walking on air.
How fabulous! Congratulations!
Can we somehow buy a copy from you so it can be signed?
YAY!

Posted by: Nathania at December 3, 2004 1:01 PMCongrats, I can't wait to get a copy! My b-day is the end of Feb so I'll start dropping heavy duty hints so that someone pre-orders it for me. Another source for fiber lover's jewelry is www.ramshornstudio.com. I got sheep and spinning wheel earrings from their booth at Rhinebeck and they also have brooches, clasps, buttons, etc in fibery and Celtic themes in silver and pewter. Very cool stuff. Almost as cool as your BOOK!

Posted by: Janet at December 3, 2004 1:05 PMDude, you have your own 8-copy counter display. You're an impulse buy! Hee.
Posted by: Donna at December 3, 2004 1:06 PMHave been out of town for 8 days I had a lot of Harlot to catch up on last night and I read it all in one whack. The mud room roof, masterbation and Estonia were all very intersting topics, but Number 5 on your "The Harlottiest Month" entry (Dec 1) caught my eye. I KNEW you must be publishing a book this month. There's no way you'd slip that in otherwise you sneaky Harlot.
Does that count as something I know about you?
Many congratulations. You are a wonderful writer and talented knitter.
Posted by: Nancy at December 3, 2004 1:07 PMWe can hardly be surprised that her harlotness is being published - of course she is!
Such talent can not be, should not be withheld from the world at large.
I shall of course be among the first in line to purchase Volumn One... .

Posted by: Julia at December 3, 2004 1:15 PMStephanie
you must be thrilled down to your hand-knitted socks covered toes to be a true blue author!!!! CONGRATS! I do want to be in the running for the mitten kit--- so here is my entry. "The talented, amazing, intelligent Yarn Harlot is so creative and amazingly energetic that she changes almost all patterns before she knits them so that the knitted object will have her special stamp of individuality."
Congratulations Stephanie! This could mean a lot more yarn buying for you, which means a lot more fiber reading fun for us! It's a winwin book deal! nice cover, too.
Posted by: Elizabeth at December 3, 2004 1:18 PMBig congratulations!
And look at you now! I remember the days when I would eagerly read my knitlist just for a Stephanie Pearl story. Then I spotted your essay in on of the knitting mags. Made my day and made my sides hurt.
You've come a long way, baby.....
P.S. Let me know when you're in Chicago!
Posted by: Lynette at December 3, 2004 1:23 PMSee now it will pay off to know people who are book buyers (like me). Suddenly all the courses here at NYU will have At Knit's End as a required text!

Oh, brava! Must tell the folks at my LYS to get it in as soon as it's avaiilable!
I don't suppose Philadelphia's on your book tour? We have lots of chocolate and knitting!
Posted by: Jenny at December 3, 2004 2:07 PMNathania, let the treat-baking and punch bowl-dusting begin.
Ms. Harlot, are you by chance in need of an official tour attachee to carry your notions, keep you in caffeinated beverages, and take the hand-off when your 18-hour bra goes off?
Posted by: Lynneski at December 3, 2004 2:18 PMYAY!
Posted by: Ellen in Conn at December 3, 2004 2:18 PMHow exciting! It happened much faster than I thought it would. Trust the Harlot to not fool around. My birthday is in March, and I want a signed copy. If your tour brings you south of the Mason/Dixon line, I am there. Can I add it to my Amazon Wish List yet? You deserve those gold needles, go ahead, you know you want to. Congrats and thank you.

You really are an inspiration, Stephanie.
Congratulations! What a wonderful accomplishment!

Posted by: Jill at December 3, 2004 2:32 PMHow exciting! There'll be a mass stampede (with me in the lead) to be first on the preorder list. Now, all I need to figure out is how to get my copy signed by the author.... Oh, yeah, bring that book tour to Florida, will ya?
Posted by: Samina at December 3, 2004 2:32 PMCongrats on the book! You should definitely treat yourself to a pair of those 24K gold knitting needles as a reward for such a great accomplishment!
Posted by: Theresa at December 3, 2004 2:35 PMIs Canada thawed out from winter enough in March for you to even go on an author tour? If you make it to Ohio (well, Cinci or Dayton) I'll be there. :) Congratulations!

BTW, those yarn and needle earings look a smidge dangerous, no?
Posted by: Jeni at December 3, 2004 2:51 PMIt would be unrealistic to expect that your book tour will come to Waukesha, Wisconsin (though truly this is a place in need of thrummed mittens)... so I hope you will be stopping in Chicago (which would be a manageable journey to pilgrimage for a signed copy.)
Posted by: Jessica at December 3, 2004 2:51 PMYou are so unbelievably cool!! I must have it, MUST you hear me!
Posted by: Vicki at December 3, 2004 2:55 PMYay!!!!!!!!!!!! Here's another vote for putting Boston on your tour! Or, umm, anywhere in the general Northeast area? I'd drive to Maine, or New York, or Philly even...
My boyfriend's response when I sent him the link: "I guess I should plan something to do by myself that day."
Posted by: Kat at December 3, 2004 2:56 PMWow! Congratulations...a tour and everything! I can't wait to read it; I'm sure it will be as wonderful as your blog.

Posted by: Eklectika at December 3, 2004 3:08 PMOh BOY! I can't tell you how excited I am, for you as a fellow knitter and for me that I get to buy your book! A big congratulations to you. I can hardly wait. I think I'm going to read it to my husband too. (I've learned that while he won't read just anything he'll listen to anything and enjoy it if I read it aloud.) Heck, I'll read it to my two-year-old too!
Posted by: Joni at December 3, 2004 3:08 PMCongratulations on the book! I "BINGE" knit. i.e. - knit like crazy for 6 months, take a break for 2-3-4 yrs. Latest binge started last

All the best, Pat

Posted by: Mary at December 3, 2004 3:20 PMI just want you to know that my eyes hurt now that I've been squinting at the screen on the catalogue page trying to read the fuzzy print from the sidebar preview, because I can't wait until march to read what you wrote. Warm fuzzy (as in mohair) hugs, and hearty (as in Aran) congratulations.
Posted by: julia fc at December 3, 2004 3:21 PMBrava!! Have you experienced the wonder that is Ohio? With congratulations and crossed fingers that you're heading this way....marylee
Posted by: marylee at December 3, 2004 3:26 PMCongratulations, Steph! Woo-hoo!! Oh, now how do we all get autographed copies, since I'm pretty sure Minneapolis, Minnesota, isn't a stop on your tour? Altho.... let me tempt you... we have over 20 yarn stores in our metropolitan area - yup. That's not a typo - read it and weep and I'll take you on a tour if you drop by.
Oh, yeah, so what size are those darn 24k needles, anyway? :) I suppose that much gold might make them too soft for any serious knitting. Hmm.
Posted by: Chris at December 3, 2004 3:28 PMHmm. Rochester, NY, is really close to Toronto. So close, it could easily be added to the tour list if it's not one of the Big 8.
Just saying.
Yay, Stephanie!
Posted by: Kristen at December 3, 2004 3:31 PMI can't even imagine how much joy a full book of your writing will provide for me :)

Posted by: Jen at December 3, 2004 3:43 PMAll right, I've had enough!! Can i just say hello from Missouri? I've seen enough east coast-west coast comments.....I want you in MY state!! I have a clueless yarn store that I'm sure doesn't even know there is a whole world of blogliness out here and no one to share the joy of bookbookbookbook with!!! Can this first time commenter/knit lover/blog reader/ midwesterner get a little love?!?!?!? Congratulations Ms. Pearl(Purl?)-Mcphee

I second Chris, come to Minneapolis MN.....
I am so excited for you.
TIme to break out the screech for a celebratory round
cheers
Not just a writer- a PUBLISHED writer!
Love the comment about stalking men in grocery stores for their sweaters. A friend posted a photo of his new gf and my second question was about her scarf and the edging. And I randomly rub sweaters to feel the fiber, even if they're still on people.
Hilarious.
Come to California and send happy sunny postcards home to the family. Never mind that it isn't tanning weather, the postcards will make it feel like tanning weather. That'll get them and their trans-fat ways. Though hm. Perhaps you should start boycotting the laundress duties so the family can fend for themselves while you're gone. And practice signing your autograph 'cause we're going to want them :) Your promo item should be a set of needles with your info printed on it. Hey, they can imprint pens- why not needles! Or a needle gauge ;) bookmark.
Posted by: freecia at December 3, 2004 4:12 PMYou naughty tease of a harlot! How fabulous!
When did you get the time to write it? No wonder the washing has been suffering. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, Superwoman!
WHAT NATHANIA SAID! Big party in Toronto! Knitters fly in from everywhere, Woot and double woot!!! Tell your publishers, "Make it SO..."
Wheee!
Oh, yeah, great idea, Nathania - a huge party in Toronto to celebrate the release! And make sure Storey doesn't schedule it for Steph's house - if she ripped apart the mudroom and painted walls for an afghan assembly gathering, I cannot even imagine what she would do in preparation for 1,000 knitters dropping by to congratulate her and buy signed books.
Boggles the mind. Screech would probably be the best course of action.
Posted by: Chris at December 3, 2004 4:29 PMCongratulations!! How very exciting and exceptionally well-deserved!

Posted by: LauraA at December 3, 2004 5:14 PMThat is awesome news, you must be so proud. I really like the cover illustation too. I imagine non-knitters buying this for a woman they know who knits a lot because they think "Women who knit too much? Hey, that's my mom/sis/aunt/grandma/daughter/friend/boss/co-worker, she will LOVE this!" And of course knitters will buy it for themselves too. :) Conga-rats!

Now, my question is which 8 cities have been picked for your book tour? *points to catalog page hoping one of them is nearby* huh? huh? And what do you plan on confessing to? *grin*
Congrats!

Posted by: Leslie at December 3, 2004 6:02 PMCongratulations!!!! I cannot wait to get my hot little hands on it. I am a knitting book junkie. Ask my boyfriend. His ankles are perpetually in braces from tripping over my piles of patterns and variously yarn related goodness. :)
Posted by: Erika at December 3, 2004 6:22 PMWow! Congratulations!!!! That is just way too cool and exciting! Peace, joy and lots of love to you and yours! Happy, happy holidays!

Posted by: Kay at December 3, 2004 6:30 PMThat's great - but what about us men who knit too much?
Posted by: Timothy at December 3, 2004 7:16 PMThanks to your book catalogue page, I now know what "pithy" and "cogent" mean...well, a little help from Merriam-Webster on line too. I am at the "How do I cast on again?" stage of knitting but you have definitely been inspiring these past few weeks since I discovered your blog. I look forward to the read. Sadly, I crochet faster than I cast on. But you should see my doilies...
All the people asking for signed copies reminds me of a great blog by a writer who handles those requests quite well. She teams up with a local bookstore - if people order the books from the bookstore, she provides the store with signed copies to have on hand. At least I think that's how it works. She gets to support a small-time bookstore instead of big biz, and we get signed copies. Maybe a yarn store would consent to such a deal for you? Worth a thought. Here's her blog page: http://saralaughs.com/blog/
Posted by: Pam at December 3, 2004 7:38 PMHey, completely aside from the contest, I wanted to thank you for putting up information about the thrummed mits. My sister, who is currently living in Madison, WI just emailed to say her car died - the clutch went out. She's going to have to get between two jobs (70 hrs a week, poor thing) via the bus, which means a lot of waiting outside. So I'm using the links you've provided to maybe scrounge up the ingredients for thrummed mittens to send her ASAP.
So thank you for making the information available and known, because it's going to help her out A LOT.
*snugs you and squeezes your Cold Canadian Hands* :D

Posted by: Jennifer at December 4, 2004 10:31 AMCongratulations Stephanie!
If you come to Springfield, Illinois I will show you all the Abraham Lincoln sites and my WASHING MACHINE! I'm pretty sure my machine is a bastard offspring of Mr. Washie, since we do as much laundry as you do (1 husband, 1 teenage son, 3 mostly teenage daughters, 3 dogs, 1 bird, and various children that show up claiming to live here). I'll even let you felt in my machine.
So will you be appearing on David Letterman as the world's harliot's knitter?
Stephanie! Woofeakinhooooooooooo! The web is one thing: actual printed eternity is another. You'll be so portable--I can't wait to see it! Congratulations!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Mason-Dixon Ann at December 4, 2004 11:43 AMWhat can I say that hasn't already been said! I'm thrilled, excited, and creating my list of who I will buy this book for! I have six people already!
You are a bright spot in my day. I look forward to reading what you have to share each and every day.
I feel lucky that I live in northeast Massachusetts. I'm close enough to travel to more than a few locations.
Can't wait to see where your book tour will take you.

Posted by: Carrie at December 4, 2004 12:18 PMI don't knit. That's just the way I am. I don't dislike knitting, I just don't knit myself. However, I've known Stephanie for more than twenty>mumble< years, since a time when knitting was just for old people (i.e. a long time ago). A few years ago, I became a published playwright and I have a collection of theatrical reviews from around the world. I'd proudly announce show openings to Stephanie and she'd politely comment how nice it must be. Now, once again, she's topped me. She's got a REAL book. Not some silly little play, but a REAL book, to be read by real people. Well... I'm still ridiculously tall and you're still ridiculously not tall. So there!
Seriously, Stephanie, congratulations. This is a great thing and you should be proud. Gloat on. You've earned it.
Love you.

Posted by: Tom at December 4, 2004 12:18 PMStephanie, you truly are the mimi smartypants of the knitblog whatsit. Your book is on my Christmas List, I don't give a monkey's when it turns up, so long as it does. I *heart* you with all my heart.

Posted by: susanna eve at December 5, 2004 4:45 PMI had to post a second comment. When I tried a google search for your book's title, google suggested that perhaps I might mean:
"At Knight's End: meditations for women who knit too much"

Posted by: Eilene at December 6, 2004 7:48 AMCongrats! This is such fantastic news - I can't wait to get a copy myself! Let me just add my push for a stop in DC on the tour! Seems to me that's right around cherry blossom time...
Posted by: DLJ at December 6, 2004 9:29 AMHey Stephanie- Every major work project has to be accompanied by a Tempter. Otherwise the satisfaction of managing to turn said project in on-deadline would be flat and de-motivating. Last time it was a novel (or four) by JD Robb. This time it was your archive.
Fortunately I'm done and I still have a week until deadline. (Lets not think about what I'll find to procrastinate with. Maybe writing comments to blogs.)
I can't tell you how fun it was to scroll to the bottom of each month and zig-zag my way up the archive to read the blog in the proper chronological order. I'm sure you understand.
Regards,
Cat
Right on! Keep on truckin'! Rock out with...well...I'll just leave it at that. ;)
Posted by: Stacy at December 6, 2004 11:00 AMSorry I can't make this long (finals this week, no time to breath) but I can't wait to buy your book.
