October 2, 2006

I did, I did not and I do.

I did finish the book. (Or very much close enough. It's gone to the Editor and I feel an ethereal lightness. I don't think Joe could be any happier either.)

Didntmakit

I did not finish the shawl before our event on Saturday.

Ganswynot309

Nor did I finish its companion, Joe's gansey. These two projects were intended for greatness this weekend, and sadly...the limits on this knitters time were too much. It's quite funny though...that out of all of the times that I have pulled off a completely wild amount of knitting on an insane deadline, it strikes me as hilarious (and perhaps a smidge ironic) that these are the two projects that didn't make their intended event. The event?

Nuh-UH!!!!!!!!!!! How awesome! Congratulations to you both. I too love your flowers - and laugh at the irony of the WIPs That Almost Were. (I already have grand schemes for knitting my own garter, shawls for each of my bridesmaids, pocket squares for my groom and his attendants, plus a fabulous reception shawl for myself. Any guesses on how all that might turn out?)

Congratulations and all.... but ARE YOU NUTS?!?!?

Not about the wedding of course, but the combination of wedding, book, gransey and shawl.

Reminds me of when we moved from NY to VA - I was 8 months pregnant with 2 small children, building a new house and living in a 2 bedroom apartment with just about everything we owned in storage until the house was ready. Any one of those would be enough for a sane woman, but we had all of it. It's a wonder we are still married!

Posted by: Nancy J at October 2, 2006 3:07 PM

Ha Ha! Sorry, I'm glad you're finally married, but it just cracks me up that you would plan a wedding for the same weekend as a book deadline, and then try to finish two massive knitting projects at the same time. Best wishes to you both. I'm sure the gansey and the shawl will be adequately appreciated whenever they are done!

My sweetie finished his PhD, got married, moved to a new state (in the process, becoming a first-time homeowner), and started a new job... granted, not all on the same day, but in about ten days. A very, very memorable ten days. (I did all that, too, minus the degree and the job).

Or was the purpose of the gansey and the shawl to provide distraction to we readers out here?

Best wishes always, and many more happy years together!

Congratulations all around!

(Why do I picture your sanity just standing on the front stoop with a hobo stick/bandana pouch wondering whether it should come in or go back to riding the rails?)

Posted by: Debbie at October 2, 2006 3:37 PM

So. . . does this mean the "godless heathen union" is now an official union? What made you guys decide to formalize things? (okay--that was a nosey question and none of my business) You two obviously have a special relationship so all I can wish you are many healthy, happy years. (and astronomical book sales)

Posted by: Natalie at October 2, 2006 3:46 PM

Oh, Steph, fantastic! Congratulations and big hugs to you and Joe and the girls! Beautiful picture of your hands with your rings...gorgeous bouquet... And hey - the gansey and shawl aren't 'unfinished', they're 'symbols of how two beautiful and intricate works come together as partners in the process of knitting together a union'. (Or something like that. [g]) Which togetherness I hope will last for years and years and years. Blessings!! I hope you had a magnificent party and honeymoon. And yes, if you can share, we'd love to see more pix.

(Ok, now *I'm* sniffling, 'cause Mike and I had our own little GHU, then eloped to Reno on a Labor Day weekend, and simply had a big party for a reception in October. It was great. Only we compressed the whole thing into about 5 months before our wedding, LOL. And no one was writing a book under deadline. Wonderful memories. May you have equally wonderful ones.)

Posted by: MonicaPDX at October 2, 2006 3:46 PM

I must say that your nails look TERRIFIC in those pictures. If I was under the amount of stress that you've been in the last few weeks, er, months, er, years...my nails would probably be sad jagged stumps.

Congratulations Steph and Joe - many, many, many more happy years to come.

I may be the first to say this, but HEY...just because it's legal doesn't mean it's not still a godless heathen union! Only the "union" part has been (slightly) redefined...but if the members are still godless heathens... :)

In all seriousness, mazel tov to both of you! What beautiful flowers...what beautiful knitting...and what a beautiful life you have together. Many general-purpose blessings as you enter the new phase of ring-wearing!

Posted by: Plum Texan at October 2, 2006 4:14 PM

Lots and lots of congratulations are in order, right in line with what everyone else is squealing.

I have a sneaking suspicion Joe's happiness isn't entirely due to the book being finished. It seems you two are stuck with one another all official-like now. He's a lucky man...and as a side note, I'll never know where you manage to generate the extra hours in a day to do all that you do.

Posted by: Pixie at October 2, 2006 4:14 PM

All the best! As a former GHU club member whose wedding anniversary also is in the fall (Oct. 2), I can tell you that either way is pretty excellent.

Did you keep it a secret just so you could post that short, cryptic blog entry and have us all falling off our chairs in amazement?

Hope the event was a blast; best wishes for your futures and for adding another anniversary (otherwise known as a "reason to party") to your life.

I guess you can't really use the term "heathen union" anymore, which is a shame. Comedic gold.

I hope we get to see a few more pics - especially of your now so-much-more-legit daughters. Did they cry? Did you cry? I bet you did. Maybe it's a good thing the shawl wasn't done - it would have been too easy to get it all wet and salty.

Ah, but the picture of the shawl in progress with those gorgeous flowers and the beautiful hands in beautiful rings...perfect. The shawl did its duty, I think, finished or not, and the unfinished gansey emphasizes the continuity of marriage - the wedding *shouldn't* feel like it's over all at once, should it? :-)

I, too, had assumed you were already married. So much for assumptions! And no wonder you were so hot to finish the lace. But, the others are so right...it, and the gansey, will be a wonderful first anniversary gift for you both.

Best blessings and congratulations to you all!

While I'm sad that you're no longer in a godless heathen union (I'm in one myself), I'm very happy for you! I can't believe you had a wedding AND finished a book in such close proximity. You must be exhausted (but very happy), and kind of insane. The good kind though.

Posted by: Specs at October 2, 2006 6:19 PM

CONGRATULATIONS and best to you both.

I didn't finish knitting my shawl or my husband's aran vest for our wedding either! I guess it's a knitter's curse (or blessing) to always get things done for others first...

Congrats once again!

ok, i never comment here, but

OH MY GOD! CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations! My husband and I got married after living together for 10 years. I was fine with just living together, but I kinda like being married too.
Now we just have the "years together" issue. If I tell someone next May that I've been married 3 years, I have to add "but we were together for 10 years before that!" and it gets a little cumbersome sometimes. :)

Best wishes for many more happy and healthy years together.

This boggles my mind that during the constant blogging, finishing a manuscript and everyday life, you also were planning a wedding. I can't blame you for not mentioning it on the blog while trying to finish everything else. That is just so crazy! Congratulations to you and Joe. That is wonderful. Many more years of togetherness to you both!

You get so many, it's already been said, you have a deadline and no bizness reading repeats, blah, blah, blah. But omigosh, you never cease to surprise, amuse, amaze. Hearty congrats & keep up the good work. (And tell me really, could you have worn such knits at this time of year??? We have just cooled to the mid 80s F and just imagining those makes me sweat.)

What next? Are you going to leap tall buildings in a single bound?

I REALLY hope you took a photo with the sock. Many, many congratulations to you both from those of us still in GHUs. There's only one thing I love more than weddings, and that's babies. Would you consider delighting us all with one of those too?

Posted by: laureth at October 2, 2006 7:33 PM

Oh, Steph and Joe

Congratulations! And, even if you are/were godless heathens, I really hope you used the 1662 Book of Common Prayer for the service. The one that has:

"With this ring I thee wed, with my body I thee worship..."

In my estimation, that is the most romantic line in any wedding ceremony I've ever heard. I blame my Puritan ancestors for the fact that it was removed when the American Episcopal church wrote its first BCP in 1792, or thereabouts. Leave it to the Puritans to take all the fun out of *everything*.

That said, may you so live together in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that your home may be a haven of blessing and of peace.

Posted by: Sarah at October 2, 2006 10:18 PM

Wow! That was a shock. Congratulations and all the best to the both of you!

But, let me get this straight, now. You were facing a book deadline, traipsing around the U.S. visiting with all these crazy knitters, trying to complete your wedding attire, raising three daughters AND planning a wedding. And you still managed to post up until the last week. You're either the most amazing multitasker in the world or completely insane.

Maybe a little of both.

Again, congratulations and we must see pictures of the whole family on the special day.

I've always been of the opinion that marriages are important, and weddings are a gut-wrenching, tense, necessary evil necessary to achieve the end result of the marriage. But I guess not, eh? You guys had the marriage already, and stuck the wedding in the middle! Good on ya!

(You know your wedding with its many deadlines (!) was just practice for the BIG events coming up in your life, right? I'm talking the GRADUATIONS!!! (EEEEEEEKKKK!!) )

Posted by: Tuuli at October 3, 2006 2:02 AM

HOLY BAT, COW-MAN!

Does this mean you are NOT A HARLOT anymore?

I am happy for your happiness.

My Irish Grandmother once told me ... there is an old belief from the fishing communities in the Aran Isles ... the belief is that the bride's wedding shawl and the groom's wedding sweater must be started before the wedding, but not finished until the first anniversary of the wedding, in order to assure a long and happy marriage. Traditionally, and to ensure good luck, the bride borrows her mother's shawl, and the groom borrows his father's sweater for the actual wedding, and then the young couple's mothers finish knitting the wedding garments while the couple is on their honeymoon. Upon their return, there is a ceremony in the village church where the bride and groom are presented with their wedding garments. The last yarn-ends are left unfinished on each garment, for the bride to weave in herself on the day of her first anniversary. Then, in an even more ancient ritual (upon which the Church frowns) the bride ties the last snippet of yarn from her own shawl, and the last snippet of yarn from the groom's sweater, together into a "Knot of Bodaceia," which she buries (along with a red rose and a four-leaf clover) at the foot of a standing stone by moonlight, to ensure a happy union.

Actually that's a load of crap.

But you deserve an Ancient Irish Wedding Tradition of your very own, so I made one up for you.

Really, congratulations! What smashing flowers, and fingernails, even.

Hugs and best wishes to you and your Big Man Of Canada.

Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Now get off the computer and go do what you're supposed to be doing on your honeymoon.

Dez

A wedding to plan, a book to write, 3 kids and all that knitting. I'm moving to Canada, they obviously have 50 hour days (although v. short summers, perhaps that's the payoff).

Congratulations!!!! Amazing!!! Just Amazing! You make the rest of us look like slackers LOL! I would have needed to have a guest blogger for 6 months to pull all this off. You are just a trifle insane to schedule all those things at once, but I think that's one of the things we love about you. Your flowers were absolutely stunning! I hope you'll be kind enough to share more pictures with us because we're such a nosy bunch. Many blessing to you all. Congratulations again!

Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth to the other.

Now there is no more loneliness,
For each of you will be companion to the other.

Now you are two bodies,
But there is one life before you.

Go now to your dwelling place,
To enter into the days of your togetherness.
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

I don't think we need to mourn the ending of the GHU (godless heathen union). You don't seem any more god-full, any less heathen (if you take that word in its broader sense to mean somewhat less than well-mannered and civilized), and you're certainly only MORE unified.

Holy shit. Congratulations! I can't believe you kept it a secret. And I'm not sure you're going to even see this comment because you have something insane like 850 comments already. Congrats on the book too. You're one amazing lady.

Congratulations/Best Wishes!!!! I hope the shawl & gansey were at least invited to the wedding, even if they weren't worn.

Mazel tov! Many years of happiness.

Posted by: chicagowench at October 3, 2006 12:43 PM

Wow! What an amazing testament to the many people's lives that you've touched... there are currently over 840 congratulatory messages out here (and counting!). I hope that you print them all and file them away to enjoy again on a future anniversary with a glass of wine, nestled in that shawl and gansey! Congratualtions and best wishes for many more happy and healthy years together.

Posted by: AngieWink at October 3, 2006 12:48 PM

I second Paula's comment:

Mazel tov. May your marriage be as happy as your Godless Heathen Union.

As happy as everyone is for you both, we all know (I hope) that it is not the rings, paperwork or ceremony that actually makes the marriage. (Spoken as someone who's been married lo these last 32 years come the first week of November with all of those trappings.)

What, going for some sort of record in the number of comments?

Posted by: Iris at October 3, 2006 12:48 PM

Congratulations! I never tought that I would comment on your blog, but I guess I couldn't let this ocassion pass by, sadly I chose what it seems to be the most commented on entry (will you read all of them?) to tell you how inspiring you are to me and all the other knitters out there. May you (and your family) have years and years of health and happines together...with lots of knitting time.

It's as if the gansey and the shawl are in no hurry for their wedding either (they are now personified to me!), and see no problem with being "heathens"! It's so inspiring to see such lovely people such as yourself and Joe, raise such lovely girls. Congratulations on making it "official".

Okay, what do 894 commenters know that I don't? Here I've been assuming that you and Joe have been married and the picture was an indication of an anniversary, maybe a big one. But all the comments appear to imply that you just got married. Really?? Well, hearty congratulations either way.

Congratulations! Your parents must be thrilled.

Posted by: Dee at October 3, 2006 2:38 PM

Lessee if I have this right. You had A. A major book deadline, and B. a wedding to pull together (on top of running a household which, in and of itself is more than enough for some of us.) So, since life wasn't interesting enough, you just sort of figured that you would also throw together a lace shawl and a custom-designed gansey for the man-mountain you are marrying? I bet your adrenal glands are just squeezed DRY! We'll probably have to get the dart gun and hit you with the animal tranquilizers to get you down off the ceiling.

Heartiest congratulations! I wish you every possible happiness (and a prolonged, restful honeymoon.)

More pictures! What did the bride wear? The groom? The attendants, parents, etc. Did the sock attend?

The bouquet is frabulous! Never before have I seen hands looking quite so happy.

How could you keep this secret from us for so long?

Posted by: roxie at October 3, 2006 2:40 PM

BIG CONGRATULATIONS!! (But Sweetie, have you never heard of stress units?? They assign them to major stress-causing life events in different numbers--new job, relocating, etc. Getting married and having a book deadline, not to mention just coming off the book tour. . . You were stacking them up! Hope you and Joe (and the girls) have some down time to relax a bit.)

And that is an incredibly beautiful bouquet, what an inspired combination of flowers, traditional and exotic, who would have thought it, but they pair marvelously. Oh yes, congratulations on the book as well, I can't wait! The shawl and Gansey? You need something to do now that you're married and the book is done, right?

Posted by: Adrianne at October 3, 2006 6:39 PM

Oh, how wonderful. Elizabeth Z. would agree, though, that you didn't tie a knot; you're now woven together. (Much more knitter-ly.)

Add this congratulation to the confetti-like shower of felicitations coming in from around the world on this, the best-kept secret EVER. Unless you're, like, going to totally have another kid on the day your next book goes to press, or something, and not tell anyone...

I am not sure how far down all these gazillion comments you'll actually ever get, but I wanted to at least join the ranks and say a heartfelt Congratulations to you both!!

I'm beyond thrilled about both the marriage and the finishing of the book. As someone who has both written books and gotten married I can't even fathom how you crammed it all into so short a time. You're amazing!

Holy cow! It couldn't have happened for two better people. I'm sending love, strength and patience your way, not that you need more than you already have. Major happy puppy butt wiggles happening here for you guys!!

Can you fathom the good wishes?

Posted by: Melissa at October 3, 2006 7:45 PM

Well, NOW what are you going to do? I mean, what is life without life-changing deadlines? What are you going to do with all that time on your hands? :> I love the idea of Mr. Washie as best man, and I assume the sock was around somewhere. Very best wishes -- though I have to admit to being partial to Godless Heathen Unions myself, I hope you two had a wonderful celebration of your commitment to each other.

Just goes to show there's wisdom in trying the out the wool before you buy the sheep!

Inquiring readers want to know:
Will there be a suprise author name on the new book? (This is important for those advance Amazom.com orders, y'know)
Will Joe come to be known as "Mr. Harlot"?
Some couples combine BOTH their names into a hybrid.
You could be Stephanie Pearl-McHarlot-????

Well! As someone who finally ended their GHU when "it's going to be a real pain" was not a good enough excuse anymore, and have never looked back, CONGRATS. Hope it was FAB!
Re all those casting aspersions on you Harlot-ness, I think this merely increases it! Being harlot-y while in a GHU is kind of expected, but now that you are legal or holy or whatever, you are more harlotty.
And, for all those who call the knitting blogsphere a periphery - this comment is in the 4-digit land. I didn't think they counted that high (other than movie star blogs, which don't count) Yes, knitters can count!
I guess Rhinebeck is out this year, huh?
Lots of love and best wishes

Coming out of lurkdom to offer a heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS!

Several months ago I met my 80-year-old neighbors in the elevator, dressed to the nines. I commented on how nice they looked and was told that it was their anniversary. A few days later she stopped me to tell me it had actually been their FIRST anniversary – they had lived together for 50 years before getting married! I asked her if she was happy they did it, and she replied in her very prim and proper voice, “Oh, yes. He’s always been good to me, but this past year has been even more special. You know, commitment really DOES make a difference.”

I hope this proves to be just as true for you.

Many congratulations and best wishes to the both of you, the pictures and flowers are beautiful and I'm sure it was a wonderful day.

Here's to the rest of your lives together!

Everyone knows that "happily ever after" is only in fairy tales. May you have "happily ever after" as much as possible, and the love and support of your family and friends to get you through the rest. Many congratulations to you and Joe, as well as the girls.

Posted by: Karen at October 5, 2006 9:38 AM

I made a fool of myself and "whooped" loudly when I read your post. And how much of a fool did I appear to be? I was in France for the wedding of a good friend's daughter (another heathen union biting the dust on the same day - Sept 30) and needed a Harlot fix. The whoop I let out was in a crowded internet cafe in Paris! (Just another American behaving questionably). Heartiest Congratulations and many happy returns. The 30th would also have been my parent's 56th anniversary.

Posted by: phunkette at October 5, 2006 11:01 AM

Awww.

May your "holy" union of matrimony be as happy, joyous, exciting, thrilling, wonderful and amazing as your "heathen" union ever was.

And always remember to take time to make out in kitchen regardless of the squeals of disgust from various teenage girls.

It seems I'm the last person on Planet Earth to get this news. Stephanie, I always read ALL the comments on your blog, contrary to the popular belief that nobody does. Today, however, I just had to skip to the end after the first 1000. I accept that no human eye may ever see this message, but I couldn't be happier for you and Joe. Congratulations and warmest good wishes to both of you. My own theory is that the Mr. Washie Incident, wherein Joe saved the life of your cherished friend, finally convinced you the guy is a keeper. Duh!

Congratulations to you and your family! Here's to many more years!

Posted by: Dana at October 5, 2006 1:20 PM

We did this (almost) six years ago after being common law for several years and thinking it didn't make a difference if we were "legal" or not but it really does in the way we feel about our union.

We wanted to have a "godless" wedding too and it wasn't easy since we were going the City Hall route and were obliged to have a minister officiate. We wrote our own vows, and at least they accommodated us that far.

I'm happy for you and that you had the kind of wedding you wanted. Joe does sound like a keeper.

Posted by: Nancy at October 5, 2006 1:50 PM

I'm all teary-eyed at your description of the overwhelming feeling of family.

All the best to you and Joe and your beautiful girls. Congratulations!

Keep doing what you've been doing and you will continue to be an inspiration to us all on what marriage really means.

Posted by: Christienne at October 5, 2006 1:52 PM

You did, you did not, and you sure did!! Best wishes for a continued happy union. (I hope the sock got to attend the festivities.)

As a former common lawer myself (albeit in the States, so it didn't have all the benefits you guys have in Canada), I can say that when my husband and I got married last December 31st (!), things did change a bit for us. It's kind of like we were on the same page, maybe because we were officially in the "book." Anyway, congrats to you and your entire family. This is very exciting news!

Posted by: Brenda at October 5, 2006 3:05 PM

I'm so happy for you and Joe, I'm sure that what I'm saying (or rather typing) has been repeated many times by many people, but I can truely say with all my heart, that I am excited beyond words for you and your husband, and your family.

And even if they weren't finished in time, the shawl looks gorgeous in the photos with the flowers and the ring. All the best, Ona.

Congratulations! May your lives together be blessed with much happiness, yarn, and knitting.

Hands are so important to us knitterly types. And that's a wonderful picture of your hands. Ready to continue the work of creating a beautiful life together. It's mushy, but I think it's true.

Congratulations!

Rituals are meaningful because they tie us to one another and, in the moments of the ritual, we exist outside of time. We find ourselves reliving teh rituals that have come before and those which have not yet happened.

Well, congratulations! to you both!! That's wonderful. 3 years ago after 13 years of living in glorious sin and thinking it doesn't get any better, John suggested we get married. We pulled together a great party (with ceremony of course)in 2 months! It was amazing getting 4 kids to research their calendars (they all live away, all grown up!) but they were integral to the day, had to be there, and I wasn't going to risk the weather at Thanksgiving and not have one of them not get here. So we did Labor Day weekend. It was wild and so much fun!! Obviously the children are from our respective first marriages. Anyway, what you should know is that that little ceremony, in front of friends and family and anyone else who happened to be watching ... just made a great relationship even better! Enjoy!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. Thank you for saying feelings I've had. (got married on our lunch hour - went back to work and coming in the door to my husband was THE VERY BEST) It is different. It is special. BOTTLE it it's a feeling worth reliving often with the one you love.

Posted by: Joanne, The Canuck in Colorado at October 6, 2006 10:54 PM

I'm hiding this a few days back, hoping you get it anyway. First, congratulations. You deserve much happiness in this life.

Second, thank you.

You can't know the depth of my thanks, but I will try to explain. You helped save my life.

I deal with depression and a few other things that make life more than mildly complex. Not long ago, I had reached my limit. (I'd even lost all interest in knitting. Try not to cry.) I don't know why I picked up your book (Yarn Harlot), but I did. It was a rare jaunt out into the world and a grudging one at that. I read to keep myself from thinking. I'm trying to keep this short and proper, but it's hard. Anyhow, you made me remember things and people I love and why some things are just worth it. I even picked up my needles again. Since then, I've been struggling, but I haven't given up. Seems odd that a knitting book can have that kind of effect, yeah? Yeah. I thought so, too. But however it happened, it did. And I'm grateful.

I promise I'm not scary or a stalker. Just wanted you to know.

So thank you. Again.

I am working through a backlog on my rss feed, so I saw that you got married in another entry - Congratulations! But this entry is so sweet, and the photos just lovely. Sigh!

Posted by: Heather at October 16, 2006 12:09 PM

Congratulations! I am a new visitor to your blog and was totally lost when you said you were getting married. I was so worried that something had happened to Joe (I just read "At Knit's End") and was furiously trying to backtrack two years worth of entries. Now my reading can be more relaxed and enjoyed.
I am a relatively new knitter as well and have enjoyed the entries and patterns. One day, I will be adventurous enough to try some of them.
