November 1, 2006

I don't even unpack anymore.

I am throwing wool into a suitcase to catch a 12:15 flight to Lake Tahoe for SOAR where I am giving the keynote address. I'm very nervous. To help ease my anxiety (and because I leave at 10:00am and arrive at my hotel at 9:00pm tonight...that's some time on my hands) I have packed a mitten kit, three socks in progress, three things to spin, a backup skein of sock yarn and my knitpicks options so that if I run out of yarn I can still go get more and have needles. I am still wondering if I should take more. (Maybe a shawl....)

Today is my darling Joe's birthday. We're not celebrating properly today (what with the plane) but I couldn't let the day go without marking it. I've said nice things about him on his birthday before (here and here, for those of you so compelled) and I only care for him more today than ever.
There is nothing more that I can say about this sweetness of a man this year, except that I love him, he's a good learner, he is more ethically decent than I could ever convey in words and he's handled an extraordinarily difficult few months with grace, good humour, and less whining that you would ever believe possible. I'm truly proud to be his wife and I'm glad I'm with him every day.

You're a lucky guy to have a wonderful, funny woman like Stephanie. She clearly is still besotted. Sigh. Isn't life grand?

I hope you have a very short time "at liberty" and can find the perfect space to resume your music production. The best of luck on your day.

The idea of sharing a cake tonight with the girls is good, as long as you have another one with Stephanie when she returns.

Steph? I think you have enough wool for a while in your suitcase. Remember to pack some clothes.

Happy Birthday Joe! May this year be the best one yet.

As I get ready to pack for Mabel's Needler's Retreat (yes we Knitwits turn a 2 day event into a 5 day weekend) I'm laughing at the amount of wool I'm packing. My justification is that this time of year, in Canada, you really could get snowed in somewhere.

Socks - needed - portable and easy pattern, bring to all meals and outings.
Shawls - latest passion, bringing 2 patterns and required wool
Sweater - gotta finish it one day.
Throw - just bought from Philophers - must be near the yummy goodness!
Baby blanket and jackets - friends are due any day now!

and random skeins for decoration.

Now to find the trunk space for it all...

LOL... I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks fiber before clothing in the suitcase. Last week it was a possibility that I'd have to make an extended stay at the hospital for some tests, so I came home and started throwing balls of yarn into a backpack saying "I'll need this if..." if I finish that project, if I make it to the end of this ball on this project, if I get bored with that project, if I'm there for more than three days, ect. My husband laughed at me until he realized that what I was really doing was saving us both from the pain and anxiety of having to request that he dive into my stash and bring me exactly what I asked for.

You posted a little bit ago that you will buy additional needles on the way home, especially sock needles, needles that you already have 5 pairs/sets of. Could you keep some of those multiples in the car so you yuo can spend that money on yarn? You could fit a few sets of sock needles in the glovebox.

Have a great time at SOAR. I wish I could be there, it's even in my home state this year. For reasons I won't bore you with, I can't leave my dog. That means no trips until he's gone which I hope will be longer that the few months the vet thinks he has left. I'd rather have him than travel.

Have fun at SOAR, Steph. I know you'll do well. Remember, you LIKE talking to knitters. And I know what you mean about packing the knitting. I'm coming to Toronto next weekend for a MUSIC weekend, but beyond packing my instrument and sheet music, all I'm thinking is how much knitting can I get in my bag and still have clean underwear for the trip. I'm thinking thrummed/to-be-felted mitts (note to self: pull thrumms off wool cake before packing), a hat on circs and socks. All small projects. All Christmas presents. Heck, I might even be able to pack extra socks to wear.

A gloriously Happy Birthday to you, Joe. After reading the material from the hotlinks, I too am in love with you :-). I think the Universe must be very pleased with the union of you and Stephanie; you are a wonderful pair of human beings. And Stephanie...you must have some bit of awareness of the great love knitters have for you, yet you still say you get nervous before speaking? I can't say I understand that, but it's just one more endearing trait among many. May God (ahem...I think you previously said you are a heathen), or the higher power of your choosing continue to bless and smile upon your union. ((hugs))

First: Joe: May this be the first of a thousand days, each better than the one before! Happy Birthday to you...
Second: Steph, blessings to you for recognizing a Good Man; I have one too, and they're not all... Let me quote Anne Bradstreet (Am. Poet, mid-17th century) whose words I use on my Beloved Muggles' valentine every year:
"If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can."

A veritable shower of birthday wishes to you, man Joe. Will you be hoisting a few at Lettuce Knit???

Posted by: inky at November 1, 2006 5:57 PM

Happy Birthday, Joe--

I've got one of those wonderful men of my own (I call him Mate and he will be mine and I'll take care of him forever) and you should never underestimate the divine gratitude of a woman who knows what a wonderful husband she really has. He is the merino/cashmere lace-weight among men, and she will treasure him always.

Happy Birthday Joe!! Glad to hear that you're "one of the good guys". I got one of those, too, so I know how much you are appreciated. :-)

Stephanie - I ALWAYS overpack yarn and projects for trips. Heaven forbid that I should get anywhere near running out of knitting while gone. The horror.

Posted by: Sheri at The Loopy Ewe at November 1, 2006 6:27 PM

I am looking forward to your talk tomorrow night.

The group I just came in with probably just missed you - our shuttle left the Reno airport at about 1:30.

I packed way too much, but I left lots of room for what I know will be mine at the market tomorrow.

Happy, Happy Birthday Joe!

I am so glad that you both have eachother as love like yours gives everyone else hope and something to aspire for. Glad to see that someone else thinks there husband is "all that and a bag of chips" too!

Stephanie, as far as overpacking goes, THANK YOU so much for making me feel normal. I thought only I did stuff like that with my knitting.

Posted by: knittingnurse at November 1, 2006 6:40 PM

Happy Birthday Joe! May you receive studio space for a gift of a price by the end of the year.

I overpack for everything and that's before I even start throwing in yarn and needles.

Happy Gansey er,..Birthday Joe!!

Posted by: amylou at November 1, 2006 6:58 PM

Happy Birthday, Joe! Bless you, dealing with the studio bit, trying to fit into a small house, *and* Stephanie having to take off - we women really, really love the good 'uns who handle such situations with patience and humor. Consider yourself hugged (in a sisterly way [g]) by many, many women who appreciate all you do for Steph and the girls, and the way you share her with us. Thank you! Now go pick up some beer. ;)

Steph, safe trip, have fun, if you get a spare hour or so to just do some scenery looking (hah!) take a drive even partway around Lake Tahoe if you can. It's gorgeous! And stop worrying about the keynote thing. You'll do fine. Or try what you did in Portland. Take a hike from a yarn store partway to the venue. Tahoe has *hills* - you'll be too concerned about catching your breath to worry about facing the audience. ;) Knock 'em dead, woman!

Hope you threw in a few FOs to wear as well; chance of snow in the next few days... enjoy Lake Tahoe. I wanted to attend but only the "real" participants are allowed (those who signed up six months ago before the dang thing filled up). Our illustrious guild member, Sara L. will be teaching so hug each other. A lovely tribute to your man.

Congratulations, Mr. Harlot, and the happiest of birthdays to you! May you enjoy a little time all to yourself with the telephone and not miss Stephanie overmuch.

Happy Birthday Joe! Hope you have a great day and many more wonderful birthdays! Have a wonderful time at SOAR dear Harlot. They will absolutely love you! I won a scholarship and got to attend a few years ago, and had the best time ever. It's the absolutely coolest thing. Everyone there is a die-hard fiber junkie/addict and tend to be on the "Oh my gosh you made that!" talented side. You'll be in heaven. I mean, where else can you ask Sara Lamb dyeing advice in the ladies bathroom? I'm hoping that I can go again in 2008. Sigh! I just have to wait until then. Please keep us posted! You are going to have a blast!

Happy travels...

Posted by: Sandi at November 2, 2006 9:11 AM

Hey Steph - If you get hard up for some new yarn - check out Jimmy Beans Wool on McCarran and S. Virginia in Reno on your way back to the airport. Great place (I use to work there). Well, still kinda do - as I teach classes for them. And I know that you are really busy, but if you are going to stop by there, please, please, pleeeease email me! :-) I would so love to meet you. I so wanted to go to SOAR this year, but finances didn't allow. Maybe you'll meeet my friend Allison there. Anyway, have a great time.

And seriously - enjoy the view. Too bad you didn't see the Lake a little sooner as this year was absolutely gorgeous what with the fall we've been having. I was just up there a couple weeks ago...and there are simply no words!!! I hope you don't get snowed on, but as I'm posting this it's raining outside, so I'm sure it is a lot colder up the mountain. :-) Hope you brought your woolies!! :-) Have a great time!

Be good in Tahoe, Steph. With all that you're taking, there probably won't be room in your suitcase to take anything home. Huh? Don't forget to breathe.

Posted by: Stephanie at November 2, 2006 10:16 AM

You go, Joe!!

When we moved to Spain for a year, I packed one suitcase of yarn and one suitcase of clothing!!

Posted by: gail at November 2, 2006 12:11 PM

I'm astounded by the amount of yarn you're taking, but then again, it'd take me like 5 years to use up all that :)

Posted by: Ken at November 2, 2006 1:13 PM

Happy Birthday Joe!

I was looking at the knitpicks options, and I have to say that the needle size tags are a brilliant idea - I haven't been able to knit anything circularly on my US8s because the tips are currently on the sleeves of my springtime hoodie that I ran out of yarn on, and I know that if I take the tips I'll forget what size I was using. (I haven't gone to just buy more yarn because I was using my stepgrandmother's yarn stash that she left me when she died, and some of the yarn's got to be 20 years old or more... one skein was from Woolworth's and was marked 97 cents. And Red Heart's "Pale Yellow, no dye lot" then was a different shade than it is now. I should've planned better when I was picking the yarn for the sweater.)

Happy Birthday Joe! My dear Brother's birthday was yesterday. Scorpio he assures me is the best sign in the Zodiac to be.

Safe journeys Steph, and I packed almost as much yarn and projects for a 6 day car trip, along with two books and the Knitpicks cataloug....
I just got home and have been enjoying playing catch up on my favorite blog.
LOVED the Shawl and you have every right to be proud of it.
I am working on the Feather and Fan lace scarf project from knitpicks. My first ever lace attempt...slow going but loving it none the less.
The sock is gorgeous and with the beads? oh my!!!

Happy birthday, Joe! My birthday is this month, too. November babies rule.

I love that you were throwing wool into the suitcase. That's the way to do it. Forget the clothing. Just remember the wool.

I can identify. I'd be terrified if I had to speak in front of people. I can interpret a play in sign in front of a theatre full of people but don't ask me to speak. That won't fly at all.

Break a leg, as the theatre folk say...

As I sit, watching a torrential downpour outside my window, I am thinking, the Yarn Harlot is in Tahoe....probably getting snow, cause you are right up the hill from where I am sitting. Hopefully, you are settled in Granlibakken and enjoying it....

I look upon all those knitters with such envy, those who travel to fairs festivals and criscross the continent and the ocean. I came to motherhood late in life and enjoyed my salad days while in my 20's and 30's. Now I must pad my nest egg because children, even one, are oh so expensive to keep. I am grateful to those with the time and resources to travel and then share their experiences in words and pictures. Keep going, just keep the balance.

Posted by: Kristen at November 2, 2006 8:58 PM

Wow, the Granlibaken? That's just...I mean...well, I lived in Kings Beach (about 10 miles away from Tahoe City and your "mountaineque retreat site) and feel like you're going down to my old haunting grounds...

I miss being underemployed and frozen in Tahoe...

Posted by: Mary at November 2, 2006 10:34 PM

Dear Harlot,

I'm absolutely crushed. It's 7:32 pm Thursday night and I just read that you're speaking in Tahoe City. I'm just a mere 18 miles up the road. And you will never be in the area ever ever again...will you???? What can I say...I'm not even worthy. I hope you have a wonderful weekend in our beautiful mountains. The rain is supposed to clear up Saturday and Sunday. Maybe there are still a few of our mega-gorgeous autumn leaves left for you to enjoy against the backdrop of Lake Tahoe. Enjoy Enjoy. If only Joe were with you. Happy Birthday to him. Love you and love your books and blog.

You're going to be in my backyard. I've never been so bummed that I don't spin. With any luck, I'll make it to the market.
Sorry, but the weather is going to be pretty crummy while you're here.. Of course, we skiers are happy that we're starting to get some snow.
I join everyone else in sending Joe happy birthday wishes.

That's what I love about KnitPix Options - I just take the whole dang thing with me when I go on a trip; no worries about switching needles for gauge. But I've had trouble twice now with the purple cord coming loose at the join. Anyone else having this problem? They sent me a new 16" the first time I called, but I'm embarrassed to call and say the 24" cord is doing the same thing now too!!! Did I just get a bad batch or is this common????
