It turns out that whatever viral bad guy knocked me arse over teakettle last week was just the nucleic acid equivalent of a warning shot over the bow. I was feeling better, I really was. I bucked up, trouped myself over to my Mum's for The Big One....
Wait...hold on. You want pictures from the big one?
The big hit this year was "Photobooth" on my MacBook. A few samples of the big fun...
It would appear that the urge to photograph oneself with a computer camera is overwhelming and spans generations. (Erin really got the hang. There are several shots that I can't show you. We have standards here at Chez Harlot.) The universal reaction to seeing oneself in realtime on a computer screen? "Hey...that's me!"
For Auntie Rams, one of the dancing pictures...
This year we focussed on teaching the next generation of dancers. Get 'em young, that's our motto. A very good time was had by all, yours truly especially. I felt like I had really kicked the virus, was feeling way better and then whammo. Saturday morning woke up and could hardly move. Misery abounded. I remember very little (blissfully) of Saturday and Sunday...and only the vaguest miserable patches of yesterday. Last night I took three extra strength cold/flu pills and lost consciousness, and today I've almost regained the will to go on. (I may not have regained the ability to write coherently or with any real wit, so forgive the lack of entertainment in this post, will ya?)
While I don't remember doing it (bless Neo Citran and it's amnesiac fog of decongestant twilight) it would seem that I finished the Rock and Weave socks. (Yarn: STR Pink Granite mediumweight.)
I've always suspected that knitting was pretty much an automatic function for me, and here we finally have proof. Knitting I don't remember doing.
The tally continues to rise, really slowly...thanks to our good friend Mr. Influenza. (This flu is absolute revenge for the conversation I had with Ken last week where I totally dissed the flu shot. Never let it be said that viruses don't have a sense of humour and a poignant grasp on irony. They totally do. I am weeping, feverish, snotty proof.) I'm almost finished with the emails up to the 19th December. (Sorry, sorry...I suck.) If you haven't had a confirming email from me, then your contribution isn't recorded yet. This means the number is headed for epic, epic things. Be amazed.
Happy New Year. More tomorrow, when I am theoretically less sick, more engaging and playing with eggs. (You'll have to wait and see what that means.)
Posted by Stephanie at January 2, 2007 5:12 PMIt is the flu from hell--glad you're coming out from under. Very cool socks.
Posted by: Jo in Boston at January 2, 2007 5:16 PMGlad you're on the mend, and had a glimpse of health mid-week so you could really get down with the festivities! Tupper looks like he makes a pretty great dance instructor... :)
Posted by: Sarahfish at January 2, 2007 5:17 PMHappy New Year, Harlot! Now, would you get some rest and get healthy already?? and Holy Toledo, look at the donation totals!!!!
Posted by: Karen in Toledo at January 2, 2007 5:18 PMWow! Look at the tally!!!
Playing with eggs?? Am I thinking way too far, but you aren't joining Alison (The Blue Blog), aren't you?
Posted by: Elemmaciltur at January 2, 2007 5:21 PMWow, and I can only hope that my conscious knitting looks as great as your medicated coma knitting. Very beautiful!
Posted by: Mary McK- at January 2, 2007 5:21 PMHmmm. My quarter million prediction (on December 19th if my memory serves) may have been a little under! Woot. Snotty, weeping and feverish in Ottawa, Grace
Posted by: grace at January 2, 2007 5:21 PMNice to meet you on the other side. My family was ravaged by whatever is going around, sparing only my mother, my baby, and myself (details, but no pictures, on my blog).
Count slowly, I still need to send you some money. Or was December 31 the deadline I never saw?
Posted by: Beth in WI at January 2, 2007 5:22 PMGreat socks. We love the camera feature on the Mac, it is a big hit in our house. Glad you are feeling better.
Posted by: Wanda in AR at January 2, 2007 5:24 PMHappy New Year! I hope you feel better soon...this virus sounds very bad. I'm impressed that you continued to knit and actually completed the socks. I have enough trouble completing things quickly when I'm at the top of my game!
Posted by: Teri S. at January 2, 2007 5:24 PMI had the flu 4 years ago for christmas. Knocked me out for 2 weeks. . . I feel for you! Even laying down hurt! This year I just got a nasty cold, but ended up staying home as well :(
Take it easy and get well soon! *cough! hack! hack!*
Happy New Year! If it's any consolation you could have gotten the flu shot, then picked up a cold bug and still ended up sick with bronchitis. Same result -- spend New Year's in a fog of decongestants and antibiotics.
But someday, someday I hope to be as good as you are and finish gifts despite the haze of illness. Sadly, I'm not there yet, and not all my gifts were finished in time . . .
Posted by: Shel at January 2, 2007 5:27 PMOh yeah, right, sure, you SO suck. I think we can all agree that Stephanie really sucks, right? We all know this; we have seen the evidence. The knitting; the fund-raising; the generosity; the humor; the loving legion of commenters; the... oh yeah, these are definitely a small subset of the earmarks of a woman who just totally sucks.
Yeah, right.
Somebody let me know when the pigs come in for a landing....
Posted by: Lisa Grossman at January 2, 2007 5:28 PMWell, Stephanie, this flu put my hubby in the hospital for four days several weeks ago, getting IV fluids the entire time. He's still taking a diuretic to get rid of all the water his body held on to as a precaution! He was sick as a dog! And, he's diabetic on top of everything, so it only adds to the complications. He actually didn't eat for three days. You *know* he was sick!
I'm glad you're starting to feel better, cuz I know how nasty of a bug this one is.

Posted by: Robyn at January 2, 2007 5:30 PMGreat pix of the family, and wowsa, the finished socks are fantastic. Love the dancing bit; that's how our family did it too, start 'em when they're babes in arms! As for going slow on tallying due to the Terminator flu - geez, you know we'll understand. Besides, we know we made the goal, you managed to get that up there, bless you. We can wait for the rest. ;) Hope the Neo Citran keeps kicking the flu and you really get better this time around!
Now I have to go make some ramen or similar. I've got this cough that started up last night and now I'm kinda achey all over... (I'm very, very glad I managed to get a flu shot this year! Don't diss the flu shot. It'll getcha every time.)
Posted by: MonicaPDX at January 2, 2007 5:32 PMHappy New Year, and take care of yourself... You should know better than to ever say something negative... like... My child would never do that.. as I turned around and saw her doing that... its just karma...
Get better, and since you can now knit w/out knowing it... what a way to catch up on all your projects! lol
bear Hugs

Posted by: Sue at January 2, 2007 5:32 PMthose socks are beautiful! and the family is absolutly wonderful. Happy New Year.
Posted by: Nishanna at January 2, 2007 5:34 PMApparently not only knitting but also sewing on buttons is right there with blood circulation as far as you're concerned. (I was going to say breathing, but you've probably been a bit too aware of doing that lately.) Needless to say, the socks are splendid.
Eggs? Please do not tell me it's Easter already. Much as I would love to skip the rest of winter, I am so not ready for another holiday involving the overconsumption of chocolate.
Posted by: Lucia at January 2, 2007 5:36 PMI am so very glad you all had such fabulous holidays (well, they're not over yet, the 12 days of Christmas). So sorry to hear about that virus rearing it's ugly head again, sheesh.
Feel better soon.
trek succumbed to the flu in mid-December and had an encore of bacterial bronchitis. We are still dealing with the exhaustion which accompanies the flu. Do not, repeat, do not dis the flu shot again. Repeat after me, "I will get my flu shot in 2007." And so will I.
Posted by: trek at January 2, 2007 5:40 PMLove the cuffs on those! Way to go! I'm one of the knitting-obsessed, but I don't think those socks are something I could do in zombie mode! That's some serious knitting auto-pilot...
Hope your new year is off to a great start,
ali
Playing with eggs? Intriguing :-)
Those socks are beautiful! I got your "Knitting Rules" for Christmas, and it inspired me to knit socks for the first time(eek!)...I shall embark on the journey once I have a couple more WIPs finished :-P
Glad to see your computer troubles are gone, too!
Posted by: Louisa at January 2, 2007 5:41 PMBeautiful socks.
get well soon and do not overdo...flu really sucks.
Take care of yourself! We can wait for wit until you're well.
Posted by: SallyT at January 2, 2007 5:42 PMFeel better. Personally, I cannot wait to see what the total will be. Cannot Wait.
Posted by: KT at January 2, 2007 5:45 PMThe next time I knit or crochet something that makes me say, "What was I thinking?" I'll totally blame the over-the-counter meds.
Knowing it will grow makes the TSF/KWB total all the more awesome.
Posted by: Micki at January 2, 2007 5:52 PMNot that I expect this to make you feel even a little bit better, but the only time in my whole life that I have ever had the flu was also the only year I've ever had a flu shot.
Good luck for getting back to 100% quickly.
Posted by: Stephanie at January 2, 2007 5:52 PMHang in there...drink lots (of fluids!)...and rest. Aren't you glad Christmas has 12 days so even if you are sick for a few you'll still enjoy most of it? Just trying to look for the silver lining.
Great socks...very retro with the pink and black...especially cute with the buttons.
Posted by: Barbara A.M. at January 2, 2007 5:53 PMHappy New Year to all at Chez Harlot! Sure hope you feel better fast. I KNEW you could knit in your sleep!
Posted by: Carol at January 2, 2007 5:54 PMOoh, the flu bites!!! I hope you get feeling better quickly! Looks like you all did have a glorious time! Happy New Year to all the Harlots!
Posted by: Kim at January 2, 2007 5:55 PMAwww. Poor Harlot. *pat*pat*pat* I've been exactly that sick and it's always MISERABLE. The last time was about 3 years ago and I still shudder when I think of it. May you soon be healthy and snot-free.
If you need any help with the totalling for MSF, just let me know. I'm willing to help.
Ugh, sounds miserable. At least you got some partying in between rounds one and two. Hope you keep getting better!
Posted by: KittyMommy at January 2, 2007 5:57 PMThose are some damn fine unconsciously knitted socks! I hope you recover quickly - that flu's everywhere; there's lots of talk of it here in central/coastal CA.
Happy New Year - thanks for helping make my first year back knitting (after 30-odd missed) such great fun!
Posted by: no-blog-rachel at January 2, 2007 5:57 PMNever dis the flu shot. I finally caved and got mine. After reading about your bout, I'm so glad I did, and so incredibly sorry that you didn't get your flu shot.
Flu med: 101 Wild Turkey and honeyed tea. After a few of those, you don't care if you're sick.
The socks are lovely!
Posted by: d2 at January 2, 2007 6:03 PMGlad you are feeling. Next year, get a flu shot! They are worth it! The socks are great. I love the pink granite color.
Posted by: Sheila at January 2, 2007 6:03 PMThe only year (so far) that I have been BLASTED by the flu was the only year I got the shot. This year I have gotten one for my son (daycare was bound to get him otherwise) but for me, I continue to hope that no one shares germs. Feel better soon.
Posted by: Carrie at January 2, 2007 6:07 PMHoly Smoly you can knit socks on auto pilot!!! What next !!! It's actually scarry. Hope this bug leaves you SOON or sooner even. Thank you for the posting and the great pictures , now go rest.
Posted by: Joan H at January 2, 2007 6:08 PMDude. Not only can you knit socks w/o conscious thought, but you can knit really pretty socks. Very impressive. Feel better (if it helps at all, I swear by that Airborne stuff - it really helps get you over the hump a whole lot faster).
Posted by: Stephanie at January 2, 2007 6:10 PMThe fact that somehow you and Emma have shared your viruses with me and my friend Michelle here in Seattle has convinced me that I really have no clear idea how the Internet actually works.
Posted by: Patti at January 2, 2007 6:11 PMJammie dancing! Dancie jammin'! "Raise a child up the way s/he should boogie and when s/he is old s/he will not depart from it." Did you see the footage of James Brown's funeral? Very similar aesthetic, bless him. The presiding spirit of your revels -- "I Feel GOOD!"
Hmmm. Or am I to understand that's not the current theme song? It's not that I'm not sympathetic, it's just that I'm trying simultaneously to wash my hands and brace myself for all the Canadians about to praise Neo Citron, which I forgot to score when I was in Stratford this summer. Butter tarts, yes, NeoCitron, no.
Just remember that Nyquil and Screech are about the same proof, and one of them has tradition behind it. Meanwhile I'm off to join Lisa in porcine air traffic control, suckor.
Unconscious knitting, that's a *new* one: It goes Unexpected Knitting one better (and prettier), too!
Look on the bright side. You started the new year in bed, with pointy sticks and fiber. And if you don't remember it, you know it had to be good!
Posted by: gaila G! at January 2, 2007 6:12 PMHappy New Year and hope you get better soon! :)
Posted by: denise at January 2, 2007 6:19 PMSo sorry to hear the flu caught up with you again. I missed my flu shot in December. I'm thinking I now need to RUN to my doctor and get one. Feel better soon.
Your powers of long-distance infection are waning. The kid only as a goopy runny nose right now.
Feel better, lady.
Posted by: cari at January 2, 2007 6:23 PMThat would be "has." My keyboard is apparently congested too.
Posted by: cari at January 2, 2007 6:24 PMThank you for all the family pics--makes me nostalgic for the many multi-generational family Christmases I enjoyed growing up and then with my sisters and all their kids--our family unit now lives away from them and I miss all the delightful chaos and buzz but we tend to do Christmas in July when we all gather at the cottage and have ourselves a serious family party complete with feasting, singing and dancing (best part is the four "ancient" sisters showing the teens how to "shake yer booty") with an odd "polar bear swim" thrown in for good measure!!
Feel better soon, dear Ms. Harlot-- KWB totals can wait but WOW they sure blow me away and you're not even finished yet...rock on darlin'! I suspect you are so good at multi-tasking you usually don't like to ask for help but perhaps this is one of those times when you might actually succumb and ask for help from a multitude of little elves eager to help you tally the totals...just a thought.
Cheers!
Posted by: Barbie O. in Montreal at January 2, 2007 6:26 PMKnitting that you don't remember doing is the Universe's way of balancing out 900-stitch rows at the end of a lace shawl. :)
Posted by: Laureth at January 2, 2007 6:39 PM$19,000 past the goal and only up to December 19?!! Wow! Epic is an understatement.
Here's wishing you Neo-Citran dreams. During which you will apparently be knitting. Maybe when you awaken the total will be $300,000 and Joe's gansey will be finished . . . Take care of yourself!
Posted by: Linda V. at January 2, 2007 6:39 PM
Heh...I got a cold for Christmas, too. Still trying to hack up a lung a week later. I hope we're both feeling better soon!
Posted by: Imbrium at January 2, 2007 6:48 PMAs the Executive Director of a dance company, I strongly encourage teaching the next generation of young dancers! Hang in there...the flu can't last forever.
Posted by: Angela at January 2, 2007 6:51 PMTake it easy, Stephie. The world will wait, while you get well. Lots of rest, and happy dreams.
Posted by: Marina Stern at January 2, 2007 6:54 PMHappy 2007, Stephanie. I am glad you are feeling better.
I got a MacBook for Christmas and when I started playing with the icons this wrinkled thing shows up on my screen. It took me a while do realize it was my forehead! I did not know there was a camera in the computer. It agree with you, it IS addictive. I have been taking photos non-stop.
Posted by: Judith in NYC at January 2, 2007 6:56 PMYou have to get better. I wished everyone a happy, HEALTHY new year. That makes it mandatory.
Whether you remember knitting it or not, that STR yarn looks SO NEAT with that cuff stitch.
Posted by: kristen at January 2, 2007 7:00 PMBummer about being sick, hopefully you're able to give that nasty bugger the boot soon. Happy New Year!
Posted by: Adam at January 2, 2007 7:02 PMOh yuck, that flu is really going around. Everyone here got it except me! I'm sorta jealous that you can't remember those days cause I wish I could forget mine. I got lots of knitting done though between nursing 3 boys & 1 man/boy (he's 5 when he's sick)
Posted by: elan at January 2, 2007 7:02 PMHappy New Year! Sounds like the flu is international. My husband spent Christmas in bed or the bathroom :P
Hope you are 100% soon!
Posted by: Michele at January 2, 2007 7:04 PMTwo words (and some numbers):
Homeopathic Influenzinum C200.
I feel a hippie like you should know that already. As to the flu shot, I am a VERY conscientious, and totally cynical, objector.
Posted by: Shannon B at January 2, 2007 7:18 PMPlaying with eggs. I see. Please don't tell me we're going to have to have that little talk about whether or not it's ok to introduce real genetic material from Babydoll sheep into those killer robots you and Joe are making in the basement again...
Posted by: Rachel H at January 2, 2007 7:19 PMoh i am so glad you are feeling better! i had the flu last year! it was dredful! i made sure i got the flu shot this year!
Posted by: Jenni at January 2, 2007 7:27 PMHoly crap, is it gonna be $300K? Do I/we/you dare think it? That would be pretty cool, now, wouldn't it? Not that it isn't cool right now, but holy crap.
Carry on with the getting well. ; )
Posted by: Vicki at January 2, 2007 7:40 PMSo glad you are feeling better...Happy New Year!
Posted by: Julie at January 2, 2007 7:41 PMI can sympathize. I got sick the day after Christmas (stomach virus from hell) and I'm still worn out. Now I have a cold/sinus thing, I don't know. Something like that. I'm sick of feeling sick and it's time to take down all the Christmas stuff. Ugh.
Knitting you don't remember doing? Autopilot? Now that is cool.
Can't wait to hear about the eggs, whatever that means.
I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so awful.
In that last let's-make-funny-faces-at-the-camera picture, I love the big smile on your face. We always seem to do more staged photos of ourselves on blogs, and I really love seeing people when they're just truly happy.
Posted by: Leisel at January 2, 2007 7:50 PMThose are great socks. Get a flue shot next year, it will spare you the misery you just went through.:-)
Posted by: rositta at January 2, 2007 8:05 PMI will not get sick, I will not get sick,I will not get sick.

Posted by: denny Mcmillan at January 2, 2007 8:10 PMDon't mean to change the subject, but, Step's new book is now up on Amazon....WOW! Can't wait!!! Check it out, let's get her up in the top ranks!
Posted by: Wendy G Sikes at January 2, 2007 8:16 PMI just made a big pot of chicken mush with loads of garlic (a favorite here when the flu hits) in honor of your whammy-slam of the flu. Glad you are feeling better--but remember--the flu lies. It is evil and it lies so even if you think you feel better, keep taking it easy for a few more days.
And drink lots of orange juice.
Happy New Year!
Posted by: Karen at January 2, 2007 8:21 PMGet better! We are having a round of sickness here too. I can't wait to see a total and what you have next to show us.
Posted by: Beth K at January 2, 2007 8:26 PMsuch beautiful and intriguing socks! i LOVE that yarn...i bet it's as nice to work with as it is to look at.
i hope your flu decides to leave you alone soon. i hate being sick and hate when others are sick...no one should have to feel so miserable.
you look like you had much more fun with your family than i did with mine this holiday season (not that they're bad...they're lovely folk, i just o.d. on family quickly).
p.s. is it wrong that i automatically comment on the knitting before anything else?
Posted by: minxy at January 2, 2007 8:27 PMBeing able to knit while unconscious is just more proof of being an astonishingly fab knitter.
Now SEAMING whilst comatose - THAT would make you perfect.
Get well soon!
Posted by: Eclair at January 2, 2007 8:29 PMDo hope you are feeling lots better real soon Stephanie!!
Posted by: Shelley at January 2, 2007 8:31 PMI had the flu for the first time in 17 years last April. On my birthday. While my sweetie was away and dealing with his own sick from hell. I got the flu shot for the first time in my life a few weeks ago, then promptly caught the cold from hell, which sustained itself through the holidays and holiday travels and continues to play hell with my sinuses. I truly, truly empathize.
Posted by: Mel at January 2, 2007 8:44 PMThe flu shot totally works! Last year I skipped it for the first time in at least 10 years. The two weeks after Easter are only a painful, aching, hacking blur in my mind. Couldn't even eat. Lost 10 pounds in a week. (Gained them back since, unfortunately.) Blog if you feel well enough, but first take care of yourself. We want you healthy most of all.
And if you can knit like that when you're sick, you're a better knitter than I. Beautiful socks! Julie
Poor dear. Glad you got a chance to intergenerationally party down, but now it is time for real rest and renewal. Take days, a week or two even. But, do tell, is that your sister in the fourth party shot? She has your smile.
Posted by: tree at January 2, 2007 9:18 PMnext year, get the flu shot! you can't afford to lose valuable knitting time!
Posted by: rocko at January 2, 2007 9:20 PMSorry you are feeling so under the weather. Being sick sucks! Have some tea with lemon and honey (my grandma's remedy for many things. I had the flu about 10 years ago and it totally knocked me on my duppa for a full week so since then I join the masses and get myself a flu shot. Even drove my pregnant self to Hamilton to get a flu shot the year they weren't available here in the US.
Posted by: Sharilyn at January 2, 2007 9:23 PMOh, man. I feel for you. Hope you are feeling better real soon!
Posted by: Francine at January 2, 2007 9:27 PMCrap! I guess I had better get off my butt and get a flu shot. That flu with a sense of humor line got to me! I haven't had a flu shot in years, but did not get the flu, but it will probably happen sometime, won't it. As a teacher, I really can't afford to miss a week. Ewww, I hate shots.
Posted by: Jocelynn at January 2, 2007 9:32 PMSo, I am still very curious about the Perennial Dog. Will we get the story one day?
Posted by: Andrea at January 2, 2007 9:48 PMSteph, shame on you for not getting a flu shot. Last time I had the flu, I wanted my husband to put me out of my misery. Feel better, girl.
Posted by: DebbieT at January 2, 2007 9:59 PMI am so deeply, terribly sorry that you got nailed with this flu. Ugh. I hope you feel better really quickly. The flu sucks, big time. Lovely socks, btw. Oh yeah: happy new year!
Posted by: regina at January 2, 2007 10:06 PMSo, you're on really good meds? Try not to drive anywhere right now. Think 'sleep' and fluids. Automatic knitter or Alzheimer knitting, we shall see. Just kidding. Remember to get some extra rest.
Posted by: CarolynD at January 2, 2007 10:19 PMErf! Sorry you had to start the New Year on such a yucky note. On a much more positive note, that total is looking pretty darned good!
I've been fighting something off as well, but not as severe as what you're dealing with. I do have to say, you knit beautifully even when you're knocked out ;)
Posted by: aba at January 2, 2007 11:05 PMUnder the circumstances, Happy New Year seems a bit of a misnomer, but it is the thought that counts!
Hope the horrid flu goes away and I am might impressed that you knitted stuff whilst under the influence 8-)
I was wondering what had happened to you. I am glad you are starting to feel better. Drink your tea and rest well.
I keep trying to tell people that knitting is easy, that not only can my 5-year-old knit, but that I've done it while sleeping. They never listen.
The Rock and Weave socks are most lovely and...
..eggs?
I am afraid, but curious.
Posted by: Jess, of the Bugs at January 2, 2007 11:26 PMYou can't get sick! We need you at the Madrona Fiber Arts Festival. :-D For a sick person, you really can whip up some people stuff. Gorgeous colorway, I hope those are for you to keep warm and comfy and get well soon!

Glad you're feeling human agian. Happy and content new year to you to.
Posted by: Sil at January 2, 2007 11:42 PMHey, Ms. Harlot.
You got mentioned (sort of) in the January 1, 2007 edition of Maclean's (a weekly national newsmagazine, for you non-Canucks)! It's too bad the information regarding you is erroneous. IMO. I feel a letter to the editor coming on...
Bottom right of p. 82, for those who subscribe.
Posted by: Misty at January 3, 2007 12:12 AMHope you feel better soon!
As I recall, linen stitch is pretty rigid. Are these adorable sock's cuffs stretchy enough to get on and stay up? Are they snug-fitting, or sort of stand-alone?
Posted by: Deborah in Flagstaff at January 3, 2007 12:34 AMOh that is exactly when you need to nab 'em: YOUNG. Everyone needs to learn to love to dance! Good work YH.
Glad to see you are still able to enjoy time with your family even when it is interrupted by the flu. Don't fall for the flu shot hype! It won't save you!
Knitting you can't remember. That is some kind of sick lady.
Feel better soon.
(No one minds how long it takes to add up the tally - you are sick and with your family - priorities!)
Add up the tally?!
Redundancy is my 2nd middle name.
Don't you just love the Rock 'n Weave pattern! That is my favorite pattern from the Sock Club this year. I also loved that yarn although my fave for the year is the one we just got, Mustang Sally! It is great to know that knitting is automatic for you. That means we expect to see many more FO's since you can apparently knit in your sleep! :)
Posted by: Tiffany at January 3, 2007 3:42 AMOhh, I hope you feel better soon! At least you've got a great pair of socks out of the deal, no?
Posted by: Katie at January 3, 2007 4:38 AMPoor Steph! I hope you feel better really, really soon. Just so you feel better, the flu shot is not all it's cracked up to be for everyone. My husband is diabetic and his doctor recommended a yearly flu shot when he was first diagnosed. He got the shot for 3 years in a row and he was much sicker than normal. He was sick with the flu at least 4 times the first two winters after receiving the shots. The first two years we thought it was a just a weird coincidence. The 3rd year, when he was sick several times again, we knew it wasn't. So after that, no more flu shot. The following winter he only got a cold. His average now is once a winter he gets some bug. So don't beat yourself up too badly. Everyone around here has some kind of creeping crud too. I think it's the weird weather. What I find amazing is your socks! You are some amazing knitter to do that and not be conscious of it! I can barely manage when I am conscious LOL! Happy New Year!!!
Posted by: Dyepot Girl at January 3, 2007 5:32 AMThe flu visited here many times, too, and I have recently dissed the flu shot... hmm. I didn't realize karma was working in that direction. Yay for dancing! Good on ya! And, finally, for the next big event, I'm bringing a computer cam. It looks like fun! =) Hope you're all better now!
Posted by: carrie at January 3, 2007 6:32 AMDear Stephanie, I certainly hope you feel better soon. That sounds like a horrible wallop of a flu. Thinking of you, and senidng good energy and healing vibes. Love, Kathleen, Lactnet mama and knitter/spinner. PS Are you doing SPA this year?
Posted by: Kathleen Bruce at January 3, 2007 7:04 AMStephanie, you poor baby! A few years ago, I had Influenza A during the Christmas holidays. I wavered between thinking I was going to die and praying that I would. It was horrid. You take things easy for a while, now. No housework whatsover, just knitting and reading. And next year, got goodness' sake, GET THE FLU SHOT!!! I cannot stress this enough. Influenza can kill people, even in 2007.
God bless.
Katherine
PS I like the socks, BTW, but that's no surprise.
I think Sonya got us all sick - I've been feeling a big can of whoop-ass on me since the 12th really. I was feeling better for a while, then the cough came. I'm just finally starting to eat 'adult' portions again.
Feel better - Flu shots are really just for old people (aka live-in nursing homers and really sick people. We need to rely on our bodies to fight these things off. Be strong!
Posted by: TrickyTricot at January 3, 2007 8:04 AMHope you are feeling better.(you will, this too shall pass) Glad you felt good for the bash.
LOVE the stenciled border round the top of the wall--or is it a paper edge/band. either case, its a treat! are the fish stencils too? or decals (or holiday decorations?
Sometime, not now, but someday, you'll have to take some mid weight cotton and knit up some simple lace panels for your french doors.
(loved getting glimpses of the house)
Rest, drink tons of fluids and cuddle with some yarn until it is alllllll gone (the flu not the yarn)..your in our prayers Steph for a full recovery.
Posted by: Syd T. at January 3, 2007 8:38 AMDon't rush the emails, Steph--your bro-in-law is right up to date with the personal notes to knitters from MSF. (Let's hear it for wonderful in-laws!) Be well as soon as possible
Posted by: granny purple at January 3, 2007 8:50 AMHappy New Year! I always enjoy reading your blog. And I love those socks! They are adorable!
Posted by: Beth at January 3, 2007 9:03 AMMy kids still enjoy giving the Photobooth function a workout and our computer is about a year old. They use some of the really odd effects to make really strange images for the login page next to their names.
Sorry to hear your New Year was spent in the fog of flu. And here I thought you were having some epic parties and just not telling us (or maybe you did and don't remember it). There are still a few more days left until Epiphany, so party on! Aren't you glad Christmas has twelve days?
And by the way, you have earned a star in the charity fund raising galaxy - you are miraculous!
Karen
Best wishes for feeling better! Stab the flu with a DPN!
Posted by: Holly at January 3, 2007 9:25 AMI was feeling very sorry for you, untl I woke up this moring wit the most invredible nasty ass migraine, same symptoms as the flu with more head pain and all that jazz,.At least i know this will go away faster, maybe, enjoyed the pictues of your family, right now I am in the antisocial stage of my headache, all i want is a warm blanket and a dark room .hope to see you soon
kristy
Don't lament not getting a flu shot for too long, mine doesn't appear to have worked as I was kicked in the teeth on Christmas Day and am still in recovery mode from that nasty bug. It certainly is a mean one. Feel better soon!
Posted by: Bethe at January 3, 2007 9:35 AMThose socks are really interesting. What a neat cuff and stitch pattern. I love the colorway as well - I just got some yarn that is similar but with a brown rather than grey, called Neopolitan!
Posted by: Heather at January 3, 2007 10:03 AMSorry to hear you've had a case of the creepin' ghodawfuls. It's especially nasty to get it during the holidays, so be sure you drink lots and lots of warm fluids, and rest as much as your family will let you.
That MSF total is looking amazing!
My dearest Harlot...I you have my heartfelt sympathy and empathy. I had my own case of the Arse/Teakettle Flu and was more or less flat on my back for a week. It just happened to coincide with my vacation. I still feel schmutzy.
My Grandmother, may her memory forever be a blessing, would have prescribed The Cure: 2 shots of lemon juice, 2 shots of honey, and 2 shots of whiskey in a big mug, filled to the top with hot tea. Drink The Cure in 5 minutes (this is medicine, not sipping whiskey) and get in bed with extra warm jammies. In the morning, take a lukewarm (not hot, not cold) shower. You'll be a new wo/man.
Alas, I finished a lifetime of drinking rather sooner than one might have expected, so the cure is not an option for me.
I hope you fell better soon.
Posted by: Aidan at January 3, 2007 10:19 AMJust want to say - HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER! Being that sick really does suck.
Also - i loved the Xmas list. :) Course the ball winder and all was already on my list and that's what i'm getting from my inlaws. They felt guilty about forgetting my xmas present :-D
*HUGS* and feel better!
Posted by: ilanna at January 3, 2007 11:00 AMGood luck with the flu. Kick it's little viral arse. I had the same problem with the bugger three weeks ago- was home sick from work for two days and slept all weekend, felt better, returned to work only to miss another work day and a weekend. Jerk of a cold.
Beautiful socks! I can't wait to get my first shipment from the Socks That Rock club. Yummy, unknown yarns and patterns that will arrive every three months? Glorious idea. I hope you are on the band wagon. :D
Posted by: Sara at January 3, 2007 11:55 AMLove the socks. Buttons on socks. How cool!
Get better from the Boomerang flu (it always seems to come back.... ).
Happy New Year and love the gradually rising total. Makes for great suspense!!
Posted by: Cath at January 3, 2007 12:09 PMGo dancing family gooooo!
Posted by: shanny mac at January 3, 2007 1:29 PMBoy, that Boomarang flu can really wipe a body out. I get a flu shot every year now and have for the last 7 or 8 years. It doesn't work on all the bugs but if one does manage to sneak through your body seems to battle it a bit better.
The sock are lovely lovely. Amazing what auto pilot can achieve (eh)
I sent you an email on 12/15 on my donation. I haven't gotten a confirmation yet so just wanted to check and be sure you got my email.
I am so glad you are feeling better. I loved the family photos too. What great fun teaching the younger generation to dance. I have photos of my Grandpa teaching me...49 years ago. Precious.
Posted by: Sherry at January 3, 2007 2:44 PMWhat?! You guys didn't even do any of the weird face changing photos? Or were those the ones you can't show? I am taking a photobooth photo every day this year. Wheeeeee!!!
Posted by: lee at January 3, 2007 2:56 PMFeel better pronto, Stephanie! Thanks for sharing photos of the big one. What fun! And congratulations on starting another big thing that's gotten totally out of hand. You rock!
Posted by: pattiblaine at January 3, 2007 3:11 PMYep - I've heard it IS the flu from hell. Hope you feel better soon!
Posted by: Wystful at January 3, 2007 3:26 PMScrew updating the total - after all, it's not as if MSF doesn't get the money until you tot it up. Just concentrate on getting completely better instead. You don't want this thing still lingering when it's time for you to tour again. :)
Posted by: Kathleen at January 3, 2007 3:50 PMHope you're feeling better soon! Very curious about the eggs.....
Posted by: Rebecca at January 3, 2007 3:56 PM so sorry. the flu really sucks. i got a flu shot myself, even though i'm deathly afraid of needles (excusing the knitting kind). morphine might work.
now, as a teenager, i understand you can't get morphine for the flu (people constantly blow their windbags to teens about substance and drug abuse. the insulting thing is, they talk about it like we wondrous, brilliant adolescents can't afford to lose brain cells. the nerve! not that i'd be insipid enough to try). try this:
1 bottle of choice beverage
1 delicious pattern
20-25 balls of scrumptious yarn
1 pair, quartet or quintet of lovely needles
1 deadbolt for the bedroom door
1 forgiving/understanding spouse
1 soundproof room with a sturdy door
1 comfortable horizontal surface
10 pillows
tylenol (optional)
if this recipe doesn't work, you might want to consider an emergency trip to the yarn store. even if you risk infecting everyone you come in contact with, you will still have New Yarn. and since i have (still am) been raised in a household where yarn is comfort food (my mother and i both knit), i know how satisfying it is to be cooped up in a house with New Yarn. mmmm... mooohaaaiirr...
By all means keep dissing the flu shot, it's full of evil things. Taking it every year increases your chances of Alzheimers as well.
On that happy note, Happy New Year, dear Stephanie! I'll pass a tissue.
Oh no! Glad you're starting to recover. I think I was hit by something similar at the end of last week.
Posted by: Kat with a K at January 3, 2007 4:50 PMGood Heavens girl! The cold/flu bugs just never pass you by. Do you do the Vitamin C thing daily? Really seems to work for me - won't tell you how long I have been cold -less as I don't want to make the flu bugs sit up and take note!
Posted by: Sheila at January 3, 2007 5:09 PMHi Steph - I hope you feel better soon! I am very sad because - while I am lucky enough not to be sick (yet)(knock on wood) my right arm is so sore I can't knit! I am under a doctor's care, trying to figure out what is wrong. I have a few weeks vacation between classes etc. so have a lot of time to relax and it is so boring because I can't knit. It's driving me nuts! Your socks are beautiful. I hope you have a wonderful and HEALTHY New Year!
Posted by: donna at January 3, 2007 5:23 PMYou poor soul - I got hit with a cold on the 27th and am still battling it. But that's nothing compared with what I've been hearing about from other folks! I'm counting my lucky stars. Just wanted to let you know I e-mailed info about the DWB/MSF challenge to CBC and also to Stephen Lewis Foundation. Someone will get this out to the world in general! Now about eggs - they have been sadly neglected in most of the comments here - but I'm betting this has something to do with eggnog - the home-made kind, with brandy and wonderful stuff like that. Please don't tell me you're working on Easter stuff - although I have to admit I've started to save onion skins to do the traditional Latvian style home-dyed eggs. Can't believe I'm that organized - OMG. Get better soon - and enjoy the rest of the 12 Days.
I had to get the flu shot because of the college program I am in but guess what? I'm lying in bed sick as a dog. The flu shot is a guessing game and this time it did not work. Bah humbug.
I have a Mac as well - Photo Booth is always a hit when I'm in school. :)
Get well soon!
Posted by: Leigh at January 3, 2007 5:41 PMCan I tell you that I just did a whole project with that linen stitch on itty bitty needles and I was just about ready to gouge my eyes out afterwards. Then I brought it to my taping of Knitty Gritty as possible set dressing. I turn around and the set dresser is squeezing this item meant for a 4 year old onto one of their full sized boobied models. I nearly fainted. It's all OK now, but the fear of having to reknit all that linen stitch was almost too much to bear.
Do you find it at all weird that the photobooth software flips all images backwards? Just wondering. Anyway, happy new year. Hope you are feeling better.
Posted by: Marnie at January 4, 2007 6:24 PMI see what you mean about the cover. Not flattering. Where are the people who designed the last two covers?? Get them--they'll fix it (unless, of course, this was their idea...)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. The eggs look great, though!
Posted by: Beth Mahoney at January 5, 2007 6:54 PMYou don't look old enough to have 3 teenagers.
When my daughter was a teenager she tried to make an escape hole in the wood flooring of her room. She almost succeeded. Be vigilant!
