Some knitters.

The oven worked. Low heat, big pan, door open, frequent turning.
Good thinking. Where would I be without you guys? (Besides sleeping in a damp wool-smelling bed....which I think is sort of sexy, but I do not sleep alone.)

Go look at this. I thought my project was big.
I was wrong.

You put your knitting in the oven!!!!!! Are you CRAZY!
(I suppose that the fact that it worked means that you're actually a genius.)

Posted by: Vickery at May 3, 2007 6:19 PM

Huh. Never would have thought of that. I guess my heat lamp idea was close.

Did you notice Claudia saying that she sets occasional, sensible knitting goals? Unlike some who shall remain nameless who entertain us all by setting outrageous goals for herself, while we watch her fail to meet them? Wonder who she was talking about ;-)

Posted by: Colleen at May 3, 2007 6:31 PM

Knitting in the oven at low temp with lots and lots of turning. Good going! I'm glad you could do it in your oven--mine is much too sticky and dirty. You must clean your oven regularly--or, maybe you don't use it??
As for the hand-chair glove, I don't think even your pink thing could top that!!!

Posted by: gail at May 3, 2007 6:33 PM

Correction...struggle to meet them (I was remembering Christmas always being on Dec 25!), sometimes it happens (congrats on today!) and sometimes not...but always entertaining!

Posted by: Colleen at May 3, 2007 6:34 PM

So that's what the skin of the teeth looks like is it? A big pink thing and a giant glove.

Posted by: Dorothy B at May 3, 2007 6:35 PM

Way cool! So glad you got it dried.

I've seen those chairs in person at Archie McPhee (http://www.archiemcphee.com) My DH's family lives in the area of the main store. Heck, we were registered there for our wedding! ;)

Mm, neat hand.

I would have thought the oven would be a little risky, I'm glad to hear it worked out so well.

Posted by: Kit at May 3, 2007 6:43 PM

That hand is so cool. It gives me some ideas. I have wicker furniture that need covers. I might have to get creative but it just might work.

I am so almost afraid to ask about the oven thing. But I can't *wait* to see what the Big Pink Thing is!

Woo!

Posted by: Sea Anemone at May 3, 2007 7:02 PM

Ok --you said obcession is normal and I have been obsessed with seeing The Big Pink Thing. I have no idea how many times I've checked on your blog to see it or at the very least to find out what the heck it is . On the other hand , I did really have a gut feeling that you would make us go through the weekend without knowing soooo Monday it is eh ? Sure hope you took a picture of it before sending it out or we will never know . As for the LARGE glove--I cannot think of the proper words so HOLY CRAP!!!!

Posted by: AJ at May 3, 2007 7:10 PM

I saw the oven comment and I couldn't believe (though I really should have) that you were crazy enough to try it! I guess it's one of those things where you're not going to just "set it and forget it". ;)

Posted by: Mary at May 3, 2007 7:18 PM

All I could think of when I saw the oven thing is that Seinfeld where Kramer baked his clothes instead of paying to use the dryer. It worked a few times, but in the end... well, let's just say, be careful how often you tempt the fates. ;)

Posted by: Theresa at May 3, 2007 7:19 PM

The oven worked - I'll remember. I've tried that and sort of steamed things LOLOL; must not have kept the air flowing correctly. Also, your oven must be spotless...very impressive - mine would smell up the TBBPT (the big beautiful pink thing). The humongous glove boggles my mind and she kept going at it with broken cables and everything. WOW. Still can't wait to see TBBPT.

Posted by: cecelia at May 3, 2007 7:36 PM

How about the giant pink knit bunny in Italy?

"Artists erect giant pink bunny on mountain

An enormous pink bunny has been erected on an Italian mountainside where it will stay for the next 20 years.

The 200-foot-long toy rabbit lies on the side of the 5,000 foot high Colletto Fava mountain in northern Italy's Piedmont region.

Viennese art group Gelatin designed the giant soft toy and say it was "knitted by dozens of grannies out of pink wool".

Group member Wolfgang Gantner said: "It's supposed to make you feel small, like Gulliver. You walk around it and you can't help but smile."

And Gelatin members say the bunny is not just for walking around - they are expecting hikers to climb its 20 foot sides and relax on its belly.

The giant rabbit is expected to remain on the mountain side until 2025."

Can you lay it on, say, a chaisse lawn chair, so it has ventilation from both sides while it's being blown with the fan? Is there any sunlight in your part of Canada during the day (my friend from Edmonton told me it's cloudy by her)? Set it outside?

Still sending evaporatory thoughts...

Woah, that's a big glove! Hmm, I wonder what the Thing is, if it didn't fit on your bed. Is it, perhaps, a quilt/blanket-type thingie, sized for a bed larger than a Queen? Sooo curious...

Mmm, oven-roasted Pink Thing. That sounds kinda dirty, doesn't it?

slightly OT, but wrt The Gansey - my mum began knitting my dad A Gansey (super trad Michael Pearson styles) when she was a few months pregnant with my little brothers. If I remember correctly, her Gansey was finally finished when my little brothers were about 6 years old. & my mum generally gets projects off her needles pretty promptly. So I think you're going along at a pretty impressive clip, we can't all be 19th century cottage knitters, after all. Glad you're feeling better, can't wait to see the Big Pink Thing in all its glory.

Posted by: denny Mcmillan at May 3, 2007 9:43 PM

I just saw that hand a couple of days ago somewhere! I guess it is making its rounds this week. As for BPT.. wow, you're braver than I. Which I guess, is why you are the yarn harlot and I am just me. But for future blocking adventures where speedy drying is needed I suggest a set of these - http://createdby.artsygal.net/index.php/a/2007/02/26/p61

The darned thing was drying before I could even finish pinning it out! And my bed stayed nice and dry as well. Definately a bonus.

Posted by: Artsygal at May 3, 2007 9:47 PM

I was not brave enough to suggest the oven, never having tried it myself, and having once turned a pair of navy socks brilliant orange in spots by drying them on a wood stove.

My neighbor has those chairs, and it would never have occurred to me to glove them. Clearly I lack vision.

Posted by: Lucia at May 3, 2007 9:48 PM

So the question is, should I be glad this year's degree work is mostly over so I don't have to come in late at night and see something like this, or should I be worried that someone who comes home and thinks she sees giant gloved hands and reads about a trusted and esteemed colleague baking her knitting...well, should we wonder if she's been dipping a little too deeply into zee Postmodern Narrative?

Posted by: rams at May 3, 2007 10:02 PM

I think you should know that I am writing a term paper have set my personal deadline for finishing whenever you post the results of this giant pink thing. Keep in mind that the paper represents 100% of my grade and is necessary for my graduation, which is scheduled for next weekend. So, if you don't post soon, I may just keep writing and miss my due date, fail the class, not graduate, lose my job, and be forced to live in my parents basement for all of eternity. No pressure.

I also think you should know that I have a cousin who once tried to dry a pair of jeans in the oven. The scorch marks are legendary, so be careful!

I really hope that some really good pics of the BPT or a pattern are going to make it to the blog. I've managed a credible version of the "wee bit of knitting" at the tip and have figured out the 3 stitch lozenges (don't know what else to call them) but can't figure out how to connect it all. Love your work.

The glove thing is unbelivably cool, I can't wait to see the big pink thing!

Posted by: Belle at May 4, 2007 3:45 PM

Well... I have to admit to microwaving my still-dampish fingerless mittens to get them to hurry up and dry. I figured it would be ok: after all, I didn't expect them to felt (no agitation, no detergent, and the radiation of the microwaves in a microwave oven is at a frequency which causes rotation of water molecules... no reason to cause felting of the wool). So, anyhow, I put them in at high heat for 2 minutes, and then would take them out for a moment to let the steam from the heating escape, and repeat. It worked nicely in terms of blocking, the steam really set the stitches... besides, they were ready to wear that day!

Posted by: lanajoh at May 4, 2007 6:31 PM

Dear Stephanie, I'm way behind on reading your blog-on vacation, no internet access-but just have to tell you how much you've meant to me. Quick history--knitted a little when in my childhood and 20's, put it down 'cause my girls were little, picked it up again in my 40's. Read "Knitting in the old way" and started to get free, discovered Elizebeth Zimmerman and GOT free, THEN my sister-in-law gave me "At Knits End" and found a soul mate/bosom knitting friend. I've read it at least six times (i read several pages a day), just finished "The secret life of a knitter", now reading "Knitting Rules!", and you just bless me with your humor and insights. It's so good to have a connection with someone who knows what, and how much knitting means, even though we've never met, and you are able to put the incredible, hilarious world of knitting down on paper. Thanks for all the laughs and the inspiration you give!

I will not criticize the oven -- given that I burned out two blow dryers one Christmas Eve drying a sweater meant for a gift the next morning.

And -- uh, wow. That's some knitting project. A friend suggested I knit something to cover the ugliest chair in the world (which resides at my home). I said he was crazy. After this post, I wonder if she's available for contract work?
