After a week that can only be described as "challenging" (if one is being tactful) I give you the new Sock Summit Website. That sucker took years off of Tina and I. On that website, you'll find a bunch of information you've been hoping for, and a list of Classes. (A long list of classes. I'm pretty flipped out about the classes.)
Tah Dah! Isn't it nice?
(PS. Should I start a new sweater for Sock Camp?)
(PPS. Don't forget Earth Hour is tonight.)
Posted by Stephanie at March 28, 2009 4:02 PMYes by all means, have a new sweater. I look forward to seeing them in person when I see you.
Congrats on the website. It is all very exciting.
All set for Earth Hour -- we're playing scrabble!
And yes, a sweater would be a good break from endless socks . . . not that socks are bad!
Posted by: Shel at March 28, 2009 4:11 PMAh, yes, EarthDay! I intend to comfortably sit here knitting my daughters lace shawl while every darn light in the house is on! (Long time lurker and happy knitter who thoroughly enjoys this site!)
Posted by: dustoffmom at March 28, 2009 4:19 PMThank you for the reminder about Earth Hour. Will do. Also - is there some kind of sock sweater that you can knit for sock camp? Like little sock motifs around the neck or something? I hope next week sticks around a little longer so you can enjoy it, and get your work done - we are having some bee-you-tee-ful weather here (central NY) hope you are having some nice sunshine up there too!
Posted by: danana at March 28, 2009 4:19 PMAh, yes, Earth Hour! I intend to comfortably sit here knitting my daughters lace shawl while every darn light in the house is on! (Long time lurker and happy knitter who thoroughly enjoys this site!)
Posted by: dustoffmom at March 28, 2009 4:19 PMCongratulations on getting the site all ready to go!!! Wish I could be there. New sweaters are always good to have. And they give you blog fodder too, and we wait anxiously to see if the sweater will be done in time...... :)
Posted by: Samm at March 28, 2009 4:22 PMOMG! A sign that reason has gone by the wayside is that I've resorted to teenaged style text message lingo. But the Sock Summit classes have me all a twitter. It's time to walk away from the computer before the day is wasted away dreaming of August.
Posted by: heide at March 28, 2009 4:27 PMUm, sorry to tell you this, but the link to the sock summit site isn't working.
Drat.
Posted by: kittysweaters at March 28, 2009 4:37 PMthat list of teachers takes my breath away!!
Posted by: Gina at March 28, 2009 4:37 PMHoly cow, that's a lot of classes! Too bad I won't be able to be there, but I expect we'll see lots of pictures. Can't wait!
Posted by: DeeDee at March 28, 2009 4:39 PMDear Harlot,
Thanks to you and Tina for creating such a wonderful event to honor the knitting of socks!
You guys are amazing! It is absolutely beautiful! And clever, too. No wonder you've had this week, losing days, etc. It was worth it.
If I get a miracle, I'll find a way to be there!
Posted by: juliet Kauffman at March 28, 2009 4:41 PMI just want to thank you guys, so much, for making this event affordable. It means a lot to me, and I know it must to others.
Posted by: Anna at March 28, 2009 4:51 PMI love your site, but I have to tell you - I'm turning on ALL my lights tonight! I love the Earth and believe we should take care of it, but don't buy into the whole global warming scam.
Posted by: Sherral at March 28, 2009 4:55 PMWow, the website is terrific! Thanks so much for all of your work in organizing this and making it affordable - even the hotel rates are reasonable. You guys ROCK.
Posted by: Kathleen at March 28, 2009 4:55 PMI like Danana's notion of a sock sweater. Maybe a sweater made out of patched together sock forms, like sock tesserae making a sweater. Congrats on the website.
Posted by: Avedaggio at March 28, 2009 4:56 PMOne word, Yummy! Can't wait for August.
Posted by: Constantina at March 28, 2009 4:56 PMI still love reading your blog, and books, even though I don't comment often. However, I'm pleading, please don't start a new sweater. Every time you do, it ends up in my queue. You have the best taste!!! Seriously, though, I'm waiting to see which sweater you'll start. (note that I didn't say "if you'll start one")
Posted by: Dianne in MS (FL again soon) at March 28, 2009 4:56 PMThe website is wonderful! I really hope I can find a way to go, and that all of the classes won't be full by the time I figure out if I can go. Marvelous and great work!
Posted by: biomaj5 at March 28, 2009 5:15 PMOh Steph, the website is amazing. The classes are beyond description. The pricing is affordable and appropriate for what you're getting. I agree with another poster, if you build it they will come. Seriously looking at my pennies to see if I can swing it. Thank you for doing this!
Posted by: Liz at March 28, 2009 5:15 PMOh, to be there: all my fetishes catered to at once, Portland being also a mecca of fine hand-rolled art glass (check out the cool people at Bullseye).
Posted by: fusedglass at March 28, 2009 5:27 PMWow... I think I can, I think I can...
Posted by: Aubrey at March 28, 2009 5:30 PMDear Stephanie,
The website is absolutely amazing & the class list is fantastic! I'll soon be blind from looking and reading it all----GREAT job one and all!!
Ok, the muggles are bound to think this has all gone just a little too far. "Fancy Heel Flaps"? Unbelievable. I think it's great. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the possibility of meeting Barbara Walker. While I'm not a sock devotee, I enjoy my occasional Eye of Partridge along with the next knitter. Hope to be there in August, in my beloved Portland. Sounds truly amazing. You and Tina and the rest of the team have outdone yourselves.
Posted by: Carolyn Little at March 28, 2009 5:35 PMThe website is beautiful! It's making me soooo sad that (barring a major lotto win) I won't be able to go. (I think the pricing is spot-on, no complaints at all on that account; I'm just pretty broke, and my long-term employment situation is quite insecure.)
I'm sure Sock Summit 2009 will be a huge success; hopefully so much so that it will become an annual (biannual? quadrennial?) event.
Posted by: yarnpiggy at March 28, 2009 5:35 PMOooops...sorry about the double post. I got an error message after the first attempt, and assumed it wouldn't show up.
Now I really know what happens one when assumes...
Posted by: yarnpiggy at March 28, 2009 5:38 PMThank you! Thank you! Thank you! The sock summit site is great. You guys have really put a lot of work into it. I've been waiting to see what kind of room rates you could get. I just got done booking my room right next to the convention center which will be great as my husband plans to spend his time driving around the state of Oregon so I needed some place close in case I need a quick nap. See you in Portland and again, thanks to you, Tina and all the others who have put so much work into the Sock Summit.
Now off to finish the second sock of my 1st BMFA sock kit so I can get started on the March sock - pattern compliments of our dear Stepahnie.
My hubby and I were trying to decide if, by the Las Vegas strip turning off its lights for Earth Hour, that would save more electricity than we use in (a) ten years or (b) the rest of our lives. We decided on (b), to no one's surprise!
I hope you'll repeat the Sock Summit in future years, even without the all-star cast, for those of us who can't make it to this year's! It looks like the best knitting event EVER!
Posted by: Laura at March 28, 2009 6:10 PMVery impressive! The first class I looked into was Knitting with Speed and Efficiency, taught by...you! So funny to have landed there. Everything looks great except... I'm already booked with family vacation plans that week. Dare I hope you'll be digitally recording some/all of it for distribution (at a cost of course)?
And yes, you'll need a sweater in August in Portland for the air conditioned spots. May I suggest one made of sock yarn? Possibly: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall05/PATTarisaig.html
Posted by: tree at March 28, 2009 6:11 PMOkay, ya know what? I was kinda waffling about sock summit and whether I was gonna go. I mean, yeah my sister lives in the area, and yeah the teacher's are gonna be amazing, and yeah it's a chance to be in the same room with true knitting goddesses, but I'm a newish knitter who hasn't tackled socks yet. I mean, just how interesting/entertaining could the whole event be? Then (there should be a big dramatic flourish here) I checked out the website. I AM SO GOING TO SOCK SUMMIT! Holy crap, I can hardly wait!
And a thousand thanks to The Team for putting it all together! It looks like it's gonna be a blast, even if I only knit a scarf while I'm there. ;-).
Posted by: Kris B. at March 28, 2009 6:14 PMThe site is amazing, and it's oh so exciting to see it up!
And, yes, I think a new sweater within a sea of socks would be nice. :)
Posted by: Brenda at March 28, 2009 6:22 PMThe hubby and I were discussing my possible Sock Summitting. It's iffy and I don't want it to be. Thank you for all the work you've been putting into it, meantime! I so hope I get to see the outcome.
Thank you for the Earth Hour reminder, too. My new solar panels are trying not to be smug.
Posted by: AlisonH at March 28, 2009 6:34 PM(After making very sure that didn't go through so I'm not repeating myself...)
Thank you for all your hard work on the Sock Summit! And the Earth Day reminder. (Waiting for the city to inspect our new solar panels...)
Posted by: AlisonH at March 28, 2009 6:39 PMI just started checking out the new Sock Summit site. It's awesome. Now I am getting even more excited to go! Nice work.
Posted by: Jen at March 28, 2009 6:44 PMThe website looks great! I live in Boise, Idaho - have my wedding reception in New York (we eloped to Vegas in January) on August 1 - I can totally make it back to Boise and then out to Portland for the Summit - right? Not a crazy plan?? Right??
Posted by: Karen at March 28, 2009 6:47 PMSigh... I SO want to go, but we're in the throes of house buying and telling my husband I'm going to a sock summit will probably not make him too happy this year.. I hope this happens again!
Posted by: pia at March 28, 2009 6:52 PMTo say I'm green with envy about the Sock Summit is the understatement of the year!
Posted by: Helen at March 28, 2009 6:54 PMI'll be knitting Malabrigo socks by firelight for Earth Hour. ;) Yeah, new sweater sounds GREAT!
Posted by: Mary Ellen at March 28, 2009 6:55 PMAwesome! It all just looks fantastic.
I'd also like to sign up to be a volunteer and be your slave, but then of course there is also the matter of which classes. Hmm, decisions decisions...
Stephanie, the website and the classes are amazing. I love what you will be doing on the last day of the event, a truely historic event. I hope that it will be taped for those of us who can't attend, I would love to see the panel discussion and will pay for a dvd of it. You and Tina should be very proud of yourselves!
Posted by: tracee at March 28, 2009 7:10 PMHoly Shit, batman. No wonder all those days disappeared.
Posted by: JoVE at March 28, 2009 7:25 PMOMG!
Completely gobsmacked!
Am planning vacation as I type...it's a loooong way from TX, but how could I possibly miss this!
And how can I carry all my socks, my wheel, fiber, needles, etc. on the plane??????
(Looking for you in a new sweater, BTW!)
Keep up the good work!
Wow! You guys never cease to amaze me!!!
I think a new sweater sounds great :)
Posted by: Knitter Kitter at March 28, 2009 7:25 PMYou did it again!!! Fabulous list, excellent prices--no wonder your week vanished!! can't wait
Posted by: alison at March 28, 2009 7:56 PMwonderful website stephanie. congrats to you and tina for awesome work.
one thing though, and my apologies for spoiling the upbeat mood. but it's really upset me.
what's with all these people who are posting to say they plan to sit with all their lights on, just because you gave an "earth hour" reminder? this sort of comment is not just rudeness-in-the-guise-of-"honesty," this is intentionally, deliberately rude, rude with intent. apparently, it's getting time for another my-blog-is-my-living-room post stephanie....please, please don't let this go. ideological differences or different scientific models don't justify such crassness.
Posted by: vb at March 28, 2009 7:56 PMVery cool. If I had the money, I'd be there! By the by, I live near Columbus Ohio and I and my husband took our kids to see the Columbus Crew play Toronto FC today. Boy, those FC fans take their soccer seriously! After the game, I had to keep moving the kids around to avoid the fights!
Posted by: Whitney at March 28, 2009 8:20 PMOh if only we were all so blessed with the gift of keeping our extraneous opine to ourselves...
My city, 'Bloomington, IN' and I will be proudly dark in 17 minutes. Thank you for the reminder.
BRING ON THE SUMMIT!
Posted by: OneAprilDawn at March 28, 2009 8:23 PMOMG! Barbara Walker!?! I started out saying I couldn't afford this, but may have to find a way. You & Tina are rock star organizers. If I can't make this happen it's not for lack of adequate incentive. Amazing
Posted by: Sandy at March 28, 2009 8:31 PMSock summit... the Woodstock of knitting. This will be legendary!!
Posted by: Trish at March 28, 2009 9:01 PMGuess what? I'm new to blogs, feeds, etc. I read in your January 2009 blog that you created a lovely ringed scarf. 62 rows, I think. Have you published the pattern? If so, where can I get the pattern? Thanks for your time. Becky
Posted by: DallasAlice at March 28, 2009 9:04 PMThank you for the Earth Hour reminder, Steph! I am now sitting in my kitchen, knitting by candlelight and drinking tea. I have a deadline for these socks-Monday. The house is so quiet. I could get used to this.
Just stopped by to say thanks (computer is on battery, BTW). ;-)
Yay! I can afford to go. I've already sent the link to my knitting buddy-- we'll be driving up together, from LA.
Now, to decide which classes to take...
Posted by: Marina Stern at March 28, 2009 9:37 PMLoved the finale and I love those socks! I'm going to buy the pattern...
Posted by: Allison at March 28, 2009 9:38 PMIn re Summit:
Snarf.
In re: gratuitous "nya,nya" light-burners:
Light or dark, why in the world swing the harsh in here? Gratuitous rudeness; badly done, Emma.
Oddly enough, my family is not understanding why I wouldn't want to be on vacation with them instead of knitting socks. ("But you do that all the time anyway!")
And we were at the movies during Earth Hour; does that count?
And is the beautiful website's background reminiscent of BattleSTAR Galactica??? Hmmmmmm??????
Posted by: inky at March 28, 2009 10:00 PMI say yes, start a new sweater for sock camp because...I did and I'm not done and now I'm in Seattle and I'm not done with homework and I'm now too busy looking at the darn Sock Summit website.
Posted by: Mya at March 28, 2009 10:43 PMWHOA! The site is incredible! I am trying to gather some friends for a road trip to Portland from our hometown of Milwaukee. This sounds like it's good for the "sole"....Sorry..just hope to join you there!
Posted by: Judy Miller at March 28, 2009 11:05 PMi'm retired, so my time is my own, and my latter-day-hippie son says i can crash at the house he shares w/several other dudes if i can get to portland somehow.
so if i get a big enough tax refund i'll see you at the summit. otherwise, i second those suggesting dvds or paid downloads of some of the sessions.
and let me suggest indianapolis for sock summit deux: good air service, crossroads of several interstate highways, friendly people, compact downtown, plentiful hotel rooms as long as there's no basketball or football game, fabulous children's museum (remember the dino, stephanie?), great lys and indie dyers, and TONS of knitters.
Posted by: ellen in indy at March 28, 2009 11:21 PMI've been hyperventilating ever since seeing the site - there's so much I want to do and I'm afraid I'll somehow be the one person who doesn't get into any classes!! (Paranoia is one of my most attractive qualities, clearly.) You should definitely get started on a sweater -- I just ordered the yarn for a sock summit sweater myself :)
Posted by: Jocelyn at March 28, 2009 11:26 PMI can't go so I third the suggestion for DVDs to be available. (I'm not so into downloading stuff.)
Posted by: =Tamar at March 28, 2009 11:58 PMThe website looks great!! I wish I was going to be in Portland that week and in in Milwaukee!
Posted by: Shayna at March 29, 2009 12:26 AMSigh...
The Sock Summit would be so awesome!
I wonder if y'all are offering any scholarships? I would love to attend but got laid off on Thursday...for the second time in five months.
Sigh...
I will have to live vicariously through your blog.
Posted by: Nathalie at March 29, 2009 12:45 AMLong live Rams!!
Posted by: Aileen at March 29, 2009 1:06 AMJAZZED
Plain and simple. That endless list of classes has me spinning dizzying circles.
Wooooooooo-Hooooooooo!!!!!
The Sock Summit site is beautiful. Lovely. Dare I say a bit reminiscent of Battlestar Galactica? The starry skies are great! Better yet, it's cleanly designed, straightforward, and the text is just like a skirt -- long enough to cover the subject, short enough to keep it interesting.
Huge congrats to you and the rest of the ST teams. I can't wait to attend! (Oh, knitting fates, please let there be a slot in the "Put Spinning on your Feet" class for me on Friday or Saturday!)
Posted by: Annalea at March 29, 2009 1:49 AMgahhhh!
(words fail me)
I am so, so, so excited. I will be penniless and eating Ramen for weeks afterward, but it will be WORTH IT.
Posted by: Lauren at March 29, 2009 2:58 AMWhile I didn't find out about Earth Hour until reading your blog this morning, I did carpool to a folk dance event and so left the lights off at the house during that time. Hopefully that counts!
And I undid a bunch of rows on a lace shawl when I got home - hopefully I'll get it right today!
Posted by: fibersong at March 29, 2009 9:48 AMLove the BSG theme of the new Sock Summit website!
Posted by: Trish at March 29, 2009 10:43 AMI would love to come to the Sock Summit. I have never knit a pair of socks but because of your blog and reading your books and everyone's comments, guess what? I bought sock yarn, DPN's and a sock knitting book. So if I can't be there in the flesh I'll be there in spirit... a sock knitting spirit :)
Posted by: Barbara L at March 29, 2009 12:12 PMmaybe it's my browser ... only one other person says they had a prob w the otherwise beyootiful sock summit website ...
anyway my browser shows the navigation bar at left OK but the main part of screen is blank, you have to scroll down.
way down.
it's worth it, though.
So if I have eight classes that I'd like to take, chances are good that at least three of them AREN'T scheduled in the same time slot, right?
Thanks for including spindle spinning. I've one quick training session at The Mannings (outside during Spin Out Day) and one class where I was told that I spin leftie. Interesting since I'm primarily a rightie in every other thing I do. I guess I inherited some of my dad's ambidextrous nature after all. I can only spin when I'm within 20 feet of a spinner - can't remember at all by myself at home! Even then it's "designer thick and thin".
Posted by: LisaDinPA at March 29, 2009 1:19 PMHoley Lace! I was reading--ok drooling--over the website, when my Geekheart suggested we go as part of a belated honeymoon!!! I may be in a wheelchair by then so I was dubious but he said we can do it--wheeeeeeeeeeee. I'm so excited! We can be in Portland, and later go up to Seattle and Vancouver.
Btw, the website was one of most enjoyable to read I've looked at in some time. Plus, the geek in me really liked the starry background and the logo that is stunning and also suggestive of some sort of knitting space time continuum.
Oh heck. I am almost 50. Must NOT go all fangirl giddy at the thought of listening to that Luminary panel. Must Be Composed.
But..but...I might see YOU! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
ps get this! Not only is he offering spent part of our honeymoon to take me across country (from Ga), and put up with me communing with my Rav girl posse, and willing to mail back boxes of yarny market goodness, Geekheart says he might let me teach him to knit, for the occasion! I am sitting here feeling quite over the moon.
This is so fantastic! I am hoping to get someone to work my booth for a few hours so I can take a class or two.
Posted by: Sabrina F at March 29, 2009 3:32 PMI'm shredding my shirt in despair that I can't attend. How could my brother schedule his wedding on that weekend.
Posted by: Diane at March 29, 2009 5:14 PMSee the post above by "say pahvray". Me too. Big white space, with the info below the fold, at the bottom of the screen.
Is it because I'm still on IE6?
Posted by: Elizabeth in VT at March 29, 2009 8:11 PMOohh Stephanie! Can't we just send a deposit to hold a registration place???? Plleeeeze?
Hyperventilating in the sock-shaped state.... Marjorie
Posted by: Marjorie at March 30, 2009 12:10 AMLike several others I will be watching and living vicariously through your's and others blogs due to financial restraints. However I do second (third forth?) the idea of a Sock Summit DVD for sale afterwards for those of us unable to attend for whatever reason :-)
Posted by: Danielle from SW MO at March 30, 2009 7:54 AMLet's all do a "little less"
Google "The great Pacific Garbage Patch"
It is an island of plastic larger than the state of Texas.
"Shiney" is that a Firefly reference?
Posted by: Red at March 30, 2009 11:12 AMI'm hyperventilating again over the summit, especially the EZ memorial panel discussion. Any chance it can become a videocast for those of us who can't make it? I'd pay for the DVD or watch it online.
Posted by: Su at March 30, 2009 3:00 PMThanks for the reminder of Earth Hour! Hubby and I enjoyed carry out Chinese in bed. That was pretty fun. We could do that more often!
Posted by: jmcmjoan at March 30, 2009 3:07 PMSo why didn't I receive an e-mail about the new site since I did sign up for the mail list?
Posted by: Anne M at March 30, 2009 3:50 PMIt's so bright it burns!
Posted by: shanny mac at March 30, 2009 7:50 PMDude, I am SO THERE!!1! I have wrangled my way to Sock Summit and I am going to be the MOST PSYCHED PERSON THERE!
>sorry, psyched, not psycho<
Posted by: bipolarbear at March 30, 2009 11:31 PMShiney indeed. Very frackin' shiney.
Posted by: Willa Jean at March 31, 2009 12:32 AMOh, the description on the Luminary Panel page is incredibly inspiring and wonderful. I wish I could be there, and if not there, that there could be a live feed so I could watch it going on online. Not going to beg and add to your burden. It's just a wish I send to the universe. Thank you for the wonderful writing on the website. :)
Posted by: Sans at March 31, 2009 1:24 PMI am so excited that it is happening in the town where I live--and just across the street!!! I don't know if I can handle it. Thanks you so much Yarn Harlot and your co-conspirators for putting it all together. Uh, I hope I can get the time off work to go just one day, hehe.
Posted by: Robert Hein at April 1, 2009 4:57 PMThat web site is phenomenal! No wonder you got sucked into the time-space continuum. I may remorgage the appartment so I can come! ; ) (kidding)
I was at a meditation retreat on Earth Day. There were lights on there. I think I forgot all about Earth Day when I got home. 12 hours of meditation gets me forgetting many things, except sleep. I think it will turn out to be good for the Earth, all that meditating. : ) Thank you for pretty pictures of candle light.
Posted by: Leah at April 1, 2009 5:43 PMOh Rams - thanks for the "Emma" reference - not much knitting in Austen, but lots of other good lines --- The Jane Austen Society thanks you too!!!
