Melting

Like a big chunk of North America, Toronto is roasting in a heat wave, and like a lot of Torontonians, we've got no air conditioning.  Mostly I don't mind the heat, but when it's this muggy and hot- even the most die-hard summer lovers get a little weepy around the edges, and that's where I'm at.  The sustained heat has soaked into the house, and last night I slept downstairs because the upstairs felt a lot like Satan's armpit.   (Or so I've been told.  It's not like Satan's actual armpit and I are well acquainted.)

It's so hot that this morning I didn't even consider going on a training ride (and I'm pretty nervous about the back-to-back long rides over this weekend) and just now I thought about going out to run an errand - then opened the front door, and the second the blast of heat and sun hit me I thought "You know, there's nothing I want out there" and went back in, and decided to give up and do what you're supposed to do when it's hot like this.  I'm going to crack open a frosty beer,  sit myself down in front of a fan in the living room and relax until it's cooler.  (I don't know what exactly I'll do if that means I'm sitting here until September, but I'm going to worry about that in the morning.)

Spinning has been slow, since I've discovered a basic incompatibility between roving and a fan, not to mention sticky, sweaty hands,  but in the evenings when it's cooler I can manage - and even with just that little bit of time I've got the grey North Ronaldsay done.

I spun it to match the brown, and I'm going to do the white the same way - just the minute it cools down enough to make it all reasonable.  That tiny accomplishment brings my meagre Tour do Fleece production to about only 600 metres and about 300g- but I'm not worrying about it.

Until I'm emotionally ready to think about turning off the fan, I'll be knitting. I've got the back all done, and the bottom front wrapped up too.  Last night I did the provisional cast on that begins the top front, and with that...

I feel like it can't be long now before I have a new summer sweater,  which will be ironic, since I can't imagine putting it on right now.
Is it hot where you are?

Yes

100 degrees F in Louisville, KY. Forcast of 105 for tomorrow. The cold beer sounds like a good idea.

Posted by: Robin at July 6, 2012 4:08 PM

So hot and muggy here I put the top UP on the convertible. Trust me, that doesn't happen often.

Posted by: Carol at July 6, 2012 4:08 PM

Yes. "Satan's armpit" is exactly what it feels like. You're a real wordsmith. I can barely face my knitting and I have a/c. Wanna come to Green Bay and sleep in the cool? I can put fresh sheets on the guest bed.

We are roasting in St. Louis with a high temp today of 106. It has been in the 100's for over a week. Completely miserable! I water my vegetable garden morning and evening and pray it doesn't completely wither in the heat. I still knit, but only in the comfort of the air-conditioning. Hoping your heatwave breaks soon. Forecasted highs for Sunday here in Stl--93! After temps in the 100's, 90's will feel like fall.....Best of luck on your bike ride!

Posted by: kathy at July 6, 2012 4:10 PM

It's 104 here in Louisville, KY, and dry as a bone. All I want is float naked in a keg of frosty beer. It's miserable, and even the sock I'm knitting makes me hot. If only we'd get some of the rain that so many other states have gotten. . .

Posted by: erin at July 6, 2012 4:10 PM

I'm in Northern Virginia/Washington DC area. The temps are breaking records every day. Right now it's 98. I can't imagine not having a/c anywhere. Anything above 75 degrees and mine is turned on!

Posted by: Cathy at July 6, 2012 4:11 PM

Is it heck! Thick mist and pouring rain, not a good combination, really! Really, really, especially as this is supposed to be summer in GB. I do hope it gets warmer soon.

Posted by: Jenny D at July 6, 2012 4:12 PM

Scorching here in Iowa City, Iowa. Managable to walk to work in the morning at 6:30 or 7:00am but in the evening (temps at 100 and above) my husband picks me up. Wilting and not feeling the love for wool in anything except socks.

Posted by: blogless grace at July 6, 2012 4:14 PM

Freakin' A--it IS hot here. Having grown up in Montana, I find that there is no excuse for the weather in Oklahoma during July and August, especially in years when the misery begins in June.

It is STILL in the 90s at 9pm and the low temp is only reached at 5am, when it begins climbing again and reaches 90 again about 9am. Thank God for air conditioning.

Posted by: annie at July 6, 2012 4:15 PM

It's 101 in Ann Arbor, MI. I mistakenly did go out for errands - it's like walking around in an oven. Will continue hiding out in the AC the rest of the day.

Posted by: Gina Z at July 6, 2012 4:16 PM

Yup. I'm just outside Ottawa, and like you, I don't have air conditioning. It's 35C in the shade on my porch and 30C in the kitchen. So what am I knitting? Mittens....

Posted by: Alison at July 6, 2012 4:20 PM

Yes, very hot here in Philly, but the forecast is 102 for tomorrow. Not the best weather for a misplaced Canadian.

Posted by: CyndyC at July 6, 2012 4:23 PM

It was 102F yesterday. I went on my training ride. I got 35 miles in before I gave up. Was hoping for 50 miles, but you just gotta know when to stop. And it was time. However, my teammates keep telling me that riding in the heat and adjusting to it is part of the training.

Posted by: Shells at July 6, 2012 4:25 PM

It's nice in the shade.

Posted by: Ellen in Conn at July 6, 2012 4:25 PM

How about a picture showing how much roving has to go? It's so hot here I thought about trying to fry an egg on the sidewalk with the kids. But it's too hot.

Posted by: Leta at July 6, 2012 4:30 PM

I'm in Ann Arbor, too (what are the odds that two early posters are in good ole A2?), and confirm the 100+ degrees. Totally unlike Michigan in the summer, even the lower peninsula. We just got back from the mountains in western North Carolina where it was cooler than this...

Posted by: Margaret at July 6, 2012 4:31 PM

I live in Florida. Has it been hot since March? Yes. Will it be hot during Christmas week? Probably yes. Is it hot right now? YES.

The difference here is that since Florida is hot for eight months out of the year, every single building is air conditioned. That's because if they weren't, no one would live here but the alligators.

Posted by: Stardancer at July 6, 2012 4:32 PM

Hot and muggy outside, a cool 78 degrees in my house (1 big air conditioner downstairs, second smaller one upstairs). I'm actually a little chilly.... course it may have something to do with the fan blowing the air conditioned air right on my legs....

What about taking your knitting with you to a coffee shop where it's cooler or going to the yarn shop (heat & yarn fumes LOL!)

Posted by: NY Phoenix at July 6, 2012 4:33 PM

105 in the sun, 102 in the shade just south of Nashville, TN. Don't ask about the humidity. Quarter inch of rain since the end of May. Living in a tinderbox....

Posted by: Debbie at July 6, 2012 4:33 PM

lol i too know the fun times of fan + fiber.

Posted by: steven a. at July 6, 2012 4:35 PM

No. Not at all. It's in the 60s F here in Anchorage. But it is sunny. That's not something to sneeze about. In fact, I'm not complaining at all. I'm even wearing a sweatshirt, but it's not strictly necessary at the moment. Last night I contemplated putting on a nice scarf (Clockwork) before walking the dog. . . .

Posted by: nan at July 6, 2012 4:35 PM

Dear lord yes. I can't knit if there isn't air conditioning.

Posted by: Peyton at July 6, 2012 4:35 PM

It's stupid hot here in Kansas. 105f/40.5c. I am doing absolutely nothing, and will continue until it gets reasonable out there.

Posted by: Violet at July 6, 2012 4:35 PM

101 with 105 heat index down here in central Alabama. One way to beat the heat- drape yourself in a wet sheet, lie down on a lawn chair (in the shade) and let the fan blow on you-it helps to have a small child hose you down periodically.
Keep cool and carry on.

Posted by: Nancy at July 6, 2012 4:37 PM

It's still manageable in the San Francisco Bay Area, but it's been climbing. Supposed to hit mid 90s next week.

Posted by: Ann (WhizGidget) at July 6, 2012 4:38 PM

it rained for 10 minutes here near Chicago yesterday and I swear the pavement didn't stay wet! The rain evaporated as soon as it hit.
Cold beer in front of a fan sounds marvelous!

Posted by: wendy at July 6, 2012 4:39 PM

Also in Louisville, KY where temps every day have been in the low 100's for awhile now, and for the most part, no rain to be seen. The only thing that is helping is low(for the Ohio Valley anyway) humidity levels.
I am having trouble knitting my Malabrigo worsted shawl right now, even in the A/C. Can't imagine trying to spin fibers that stick to you in this...yuck! Good luck with the training rides this weekend...Keep Calm and Carry Beer!

Posted by: pattifromKY at July 6, 2012 4:39 PM

It is smokin', sweaty hot in Northern Virginia. The temps have been over 100 for days and days.
But we are blessed. We have air conditioning. But it's a great excuse not to cook because who wants to heat up the house by cooking on the stove top or turning on the oven.
I'm sad that you lovely Canadians are suffering too.

Posted by: Elizabeth@Transitional-Woman at July 6, 2012 4:40 PM

I guess this would be a bad time to note that it's 69, sunny and breezy at my place? It's a little warmer here at work, but just perfect at home!

But no worries.. next week you'll be here! Forecast for Oakland is 76 and 77 for your visit :)

I, too, can put fresh sheets on the guest bed. But can I trust you alone in the room with my stash??!!

Posted by: LauraK at July 6, 2012 4:41 PM

Yes, here in SE Michigan, my car thermostat read 104 while I was out a bit ago. Came home and am staying inside with the AC.

Posted by: Harriet at July 6, 2012 4:41 PM

It's been pissing down for two weeks, and is currently all of 57F (but I swear it feels colder). Welcome to summer in Wales!

(I grew up in Philly, I know what evil summers are like, but seriously, I would trade with any one of you right now. I think I'm getting trenchfoot.)

I just spoke with my daughter who lives near Ann Arbor, Michigan. My granddaughter's daycare was closed due to a power outage today. So, thunder storms are not helping to keep people cool. I am near Lake Michigan and it is 89 F. The web cam on the beach shows a lot of people in the water. I am not leaving my AC even though I want to go buy some new yarn.

Posted by: Mary Jo at July 6, 2012 4:44 PM

100 with the heat index making it feel like 105 here in Arlington, VA. But this is supposedly nothing compared to the expected temps. tomorrow....

BTW, Arlington sends a great big thank you to Canada for sending people to help with getting the power back to many of us here!

Posted by: Robin at July 6, 2012 4:45 PM

98 degrees here in Clarksville, TN, and that's on the cool side for the last couple of weeks. So thankful for air conditioning, although it doesn't function very well at work and so I find myself selling movie concessions in a 90-degree environment. Not fun.

Your yarn is so pretty. I can't imagine spinning if I didn't have AC though!

Posted by: Gillian at July 6, 2012 4:46 PM

In Santee, California (just East of San Diego) it is not yet "that hot" which is hilarious to this transplant from Scotland. I used to think I would die at 80ºF, and now that's just fine as long as I don't have to do any gardening in the full sun.

I recently discovered the idea of a "whole house fan": a large high powered fan that sucks the air up and into the loft space (where it is vented to the outside), letting cooler air come in the windows. This seems like an excellent plan for us, once the sun is down the biggest problem is getting the house to cool down after the roasting of the day.

We'll be suffering in August & September though, that's when we get our high 90's and over 100ºF stuff.

Posted by: RosemaryRiveter at July 6, 2012 4:46 PM

Unfortunately, it is hot here also...in North Iowa. Temp is 99 (f) and heat index of 105. Socks are about the only thing I can contemplate knitting at the moment. I don't care how hot it gets really--we just need rain!

Posted by: Claudia at July 6, 2012 4:47 PM

Hot hot hot here in Philly... I chose a perfect weekend to have girls weekend at the shore plans - I threw the knitting in the car just in case, but I suspect I will mostly be letting the sea and the sand do the work!

Posted by: Sue at July 6, 2012 4:47 PM

Love the new yarn! And yes, Gananoque is also hot. Luckily I'm in the marina and am considering 'falling' off the back of the boat but we went kayaking this morning and I don't know if my wet noodly arms would be able to pull me back aboard.

Hate to break it to you, but Satan's armpit is currently in Iowa (about 110 on the heat index and 101 in the shade...blech)

Posted by: MelissaW at July 6, 2012 4:47 PM

It was 103 degrees out here in Volo, IL (about an hour outside of Chicago). After my car sat in the sun for a few minutes the temperature read as 116. I'd like to say (with immense sarcasm) that it's awesome being pregnant that kind of heat. Your talk of cold beer is a horrible tease right now. And in case anyone is wondering...couples across the United States are having the following conversation pretty much every night (forgive me if it sounds a little gender biased):

Wife:"What do you want to do for dinner tonight?

Husband: I don't know but there is no way I'm going outside to grill.

Wife: Well that's fine but if you think I'm turning on the oven in this heat you're out of your mind.

Last night we did take-out.

Please keep posting pretty pictures of your spinning. It's very comforting to see what lovely things you are still cranking out despite the heat and with no AC. You are a wonder!

Just got back from 10 days in Switzerland, Alsace region and the Black forest, areas not known for their heat and humidity. I swear I saw temps at 40C. On return home to New England the temps are just as bad (but we have A/C here). Not going out until the temps drop.

I'm not rubbing your nose in it, really. I don't know how y'all back East can handle it. You dudes are made of strong stuff.

Ironically, I came up from the southern U.S. to visit my family and escape the heat in the midwest, and it's hotter than Virginia here now, and nearly as humid. I wonder why I left... at least there I could have my cat, my stash, and ... power outages. Oh well, life is good.

just wanted to wish you the best of luck for your upcoming ride! that's a feat of strength that takes fortitude and true dedication--things you've clearly got in spades.

I'm writing this from a bar that graciously sold me a pint of beer in a frosty mug. Amen. Good Luck on your training rides this weekend. It is anything but hot here in North Yorkshire (UK). I woke up to thunderstorms, we have had severe weather alerts and flood warnings at work, the cloud is so low I feel I am living in a dome. All in all a typical British Summer!

Posted by: Jo at July 6, 2012 4:57 PM

Here in Casper, Wyoming it's been in the high 90's F since the beginning of June. No rain, lots of fires and smoke filled skies and I feel like I'm back in Los Angeles. Today for the first time in weeks it's in the low 80's and I am loving it! It actually rained last night for the first time in a couple of months. I wasn't sure what it was at first. My flowers and lawn look scorched....no amount of water can save it from the hot temps and hot winds. Thank God for A/C! Thankfully, I can still knit without any problems.

Posted by: LouAnn at July 6, 2012 4:59 PM

yes, it's hot here - but we expect it from June to the end of September and we have A/C.

Here's a trick from my no A/C days in the desert- take a piece of lightweight cotton fabric (old style baby diapers are perfect - but who has those anymore?) and get it wet - not drippy -soaky wet, but wet. Then lay it over your fan - the cloth should not be so wet that the fan doesn't lift it up as it blows the air.

There you have it - home made evap cooler!

The air coming from your fan will be much less cooler - remember to re-wet the cloth as it drys out.

It's insane here in Chicago. I have decided two sticks is too challenging and have gone back to crocheting squares for a baby blanket. 5x5 is not too big to generate a lot of heat. After reading your post, I'm feeling very grateful for my one little box air conditioner on the first floor, laboring away to bring it down to 85 degrees F!

We are getting a month worth of rain in a few hours sometimes and there are floods all over the country. Oddly, when it is wicked hot out, biking isn't as bad as you would think. When it is 33 C (92 F) the big benefit of biking it that you are going fast enough to have your own breeze. Just try to bring more water than usual, or refill whenever you get a chance.

Since you're headed down here within the next week or so, you'll be glad to know that here by the San Francisco Bay we are having absolutely gorgeous weather. Nice foggy mornings (in the 60s F.)which are great for knitting and warm afternoons all the way into the 70s F. for lunching, wine/beer sipping, and more knitting in the natural breezes. We are expecting a "heat wave" next week where the forecast is into the 90's inland, but here by the Bay it probably won't even break into the 80's. (Sorry - I am Centigrade challenged.) I know you'll enjoy it!

Posted by: Gina in the San Francisco Bay Area at July 6, 2012 5:22 PM

Yes, misery loves company. The heat has been horrendous and I'm not understanding how we can have high humidity when we are in the midst of a drought (less than 1/2 inch of rain this summer)...shouldn't that moisture just evaporate?. I have a photo of the thermometer in my car indicating it was 127 degrees (my car was sitting in the sun)...ok the actual air temp was only 104. This weather has proven to me that there is no chance EVER of me moving to Phoenix. Complaining aside, my thoughts are with those who have lost family and homes to the heat and fires throughout North America.

Posted by: Char at July 6, 2012 5:23 PM

Ditto the Satan's armpit. Five days of near 100 degree heat, and over 100 degree heat indexes, I am darn near melting. Thank GOD for the little window air conditioner, or I'd be sleeping at the local gas station.

I told God that if he would just make it rain, I would dance naked outside. Then I thought about the neighbors...oh, what the heck. They think I'm nuts anyway. Why not let them know for sure?

After watching FireFighters from 34 US states battle the Waldo Canyon Fire here in my city, I have little to complain about. They marched up day and night in the upper 90's and fought that bugger to 95% containment. God Bless them and their families.

Yep. Atlanta in July. Satan's armpit is the most apt (clean) description I've ever heard. But I just got back from spending the long weekend in Toronto and it was almost as bad - what's up with that? And I hear it's going to be worse there this weekend?! Nearing 50 degrees C with the humidity?! I don't know how you can even look at anything wooly.... I'm on a desperate search for clothes that don't touch my body in any way.... Come on, September!

Over a week of 100 degree F temps here in Washington DC exacerbated by a multi-day power outage due to some freaky storm that came through last friday.

I live in a badly insulated russian type of prefabricated building, which has windows on one side to the east, on the other side southwest... No shades or airconditioning either.... last morning at AM I had 36.6 Celsius in my kitchen, and it is constantly above 30 C everywhere else... So I think i got it pretty bad... last night there was agigantic storm though, which mase the heat move around at least so I spun about 2 ounce of rowing to laceweight single...

When you come visit the San Francisco bay area in a little over a week, you will see why many of us live here. It's not that it doesn't get hot here, it does. It usually only stays in the 90s or more for a few days, and then cools down quite a bit every night. An hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge, we are having temps in the upper 70s to mid 80s with nights in the 50s. There is not much humidity on this part of the west coast in the summer.

I grew up near Boston with 95 degrees and 95% humidity in the summer. The winters are the other extreme with temps and wind. There are many reasons why I live here, and the weather hits the list many times. I have too many health issues for extreme weather. One must be well enough to knit!

Posted by: Diane at July 6, 2012 5:40 PM

Ironically here in Tucson AZ, where it's always a blast furnace in the summer, we had a high of 86F one day this week, a record low. (This is monsoon season when we actually get rain and even hail...the washes really do get major raging water even if it's only for a day or two).

Posted by: Molly at July 6, 2012 5:41 PM

Actually, it is quite cool on the coastal NW corner of California. 60F is average for us, 70s are a heat wave, and 80 is rare. Can't stand the heat anymore. It does make it easier to wear knits. :-)

A whole string of 100 + days have broken all kinds of records in Colorado. Add to that the smoke from several in-state fires and at least 2 out-of-state fires. No one is going outside unless we really have to.

Indianapolis. 103 F. The only thing that doesn't make me sweat is sitting in front of the fan, with the A/C going, and trying not to breathe hard. And you're right about fans and roving. I had the beginnings of a deep green snowdrift going in here before I abandoned the effort. Knitting some gift socks, because they don't like in my lap like part of a sweater would. Supposed to cool off to a positively arctic 88 next week. If the weathermen are lying about that, there could be a problem. (Smacks fist into palm.)

Only about 105. or for metric people like me 41 C. Although 105 on sounds much more impressive. I am going for a ride tomorrow morning in the cool morning temps of (hahahahahaah) 28 C. But remember that training only works if you rest properly. You should do at least 2 rest days a week (seriously).

Posted by: Petra at July 6, 2012 6:02 PM

Actually, it's not all that hot here by the lake in Kingston, ON. Nice cool breeze coming up the street off the water. The grey skein is luscious, and I totally agree with you concerning the incompatibility of roving and fans. I'm in the midst of a design, spin, knit (DSK) project, but fortunately have air conditioning, a minor miracle in this pre-Confederation house.

Olympia, Washington is a quite pleasant 78. It has been cold and rainy most of this "summer" so the clear blue sky and warm sun are most welcome. I understand it will get rainier here with global warming - with only 57 clear days a year I can't imagine!

Baltimore is hot- hot- hot! Just regained power after 7 days - wicked thunderstorm/derecho derailed electricity last Friday. I would have traded my firstborn for a working fan during the week. It was too hot to knit (that's saying something). Now I just sit here watching my frig regain its temp with a stupid smile on my face.

Posted by: Jeannine in MD at July 6, 2012 6:05 PM

In DC it has been over 100 or just below for about a week now. It hasn't been conducive to knitting outside, so I have hunkered down inside to work on the baby blanket that I am currently working on.

Remember when I posted last week that, "sure as shootin" something was going to happen to screw up your Mom-cation. Looks/Feels like Mother Nature is having her turn. It's been hot here in Mpls also, 5 straight days over 90, one over 100 and records broken both daytime and overnight record-high lows (does that make sense?). It's supposed to break here tonight and be "normal" for 5-6 days before reaching into the 90's again.

Posted by: Friday's Mom at July 6, 2012 6:09 PM

Not hot here yet, only 86 degrees right now in Sacramento, CA - but we'll hit the low 100's next week for a few days. Cranking the A/C down and staying inside after 10 a.m., except for the days I work at our cafe. No escaping the heat there... Your spinning is beautiful! I'm still learning, can't imagine I'll ever produce anything so lovely.

Yup Stephanie - it's beeping hot in Guelph - something like 34c (37 with humidity).

And I picked today of all days to do really stinky natural dyeing with black walnuts, so the pot had to be setup outside. I left it were I could watch it from the kitchen window, so it only bubbled over a couple times. Argh - I'm not going to repeat that anytime soon. At least the fibre came out pretty.

We had summer here in the UK in March this year. It was lovely. We all joked that this was probably it for the year. Day after cold and rainy day, we are no longer finding those jokes funny. What a pity we can't share, so that you could have some of our cool (read, bitterly cold) breezes, and we could have some of your hot sunshine.

It's 99 here in West Virginia. No air conditioning at my house either. The best approach is a glass of iced tea or hard cider, a shady porch and a book. Which usually leads to a sweaty nap. I just can't touch yarn right now. I just can't. Can't wait til Monday when it's supposed to cool off a bit.

Posted by: Brooke at July 6, 2012 6:23 PM

It's warm here in the Boston area, meaning we're down to the upper seventies. It's supposed to get to 91 tomorrow. No air conditioning, but I'm on a hill that gets a lot of wind, which helps. I'm knitting Christmas decorations from Arne and Carlos 55 Christmas Balls to Knit. I bought the book at Sock Summit, so Stephanie? This means you are a pusher. I'm addicted to the things. I was at Crater Lake (Oregon) on Monday, and there was still a lot of snow on the ground. As night fell, a pea-soup fog came right down to the ground (visibility about 6 ft) as we drove down the North Entrance. When we arrived in Portland on Tuesday, it was raining and about 55 degrees. In the middle of the day.

However, as the local weathercasters are saying, Summer has Arrived in Portland. Weather is sunny and the highs are, get this, 74. Nights are still in the low 50's. It's the first week of sunny warm weather this year.

Hot as blazes here on the Maryland side of the DC burbs. Some people have been without power since last Friday. We were out for only 48 hours but even that was too much.

Totally hot here too in Minnesota - currently 98, but with humidity feels like 107.

According to my hubby, who likes to ride, the wind created while riding helps cool you down on hot days and you don't really feel the extent of the heat until you stop. Granted his comment was during a 'feels like 94' day...

Eighty million degrees here in n.w. Wisconsin, although it was downright pleasant until about noon. Tomorrow (Saturday) the temps are supposed to drop, which means your 'hood should become bearable in a few days, too.

Elder Son left Long Island at 4am today to drive to Ann Arbor for grad school. As of his phone call 5 minutes ago, it is 101˚ F there. He said he plans to go to sleep now, get up early to unpack the car, and then go to Sears to pick up the air conditioner we just bought him online. (Poor baby wilts whenever the temp is >60˚F. We've had so many days of around 95 degrees here in the Northwoods of northern Wisconsin. It was *supposed* to rain at 2pm this afternoon, but no. I work at a camp; I cook. Inside the kitchen it's got to be 10 degrees hotter than outside and the dishroom? Can we say 100% humidity???!!! Yikes!
Lots of the campers are in the woods camping for the night or two; so we're only cooking for about 200 instead of the usual 450!

Yes, it's hot and steamy here, but it's Florida, so we really kind of expect that. We got a major thunderstorm through here last night and this morning, which helped to cool things off a lot. Tonight, the frogs are happily rapping to the cicada's beat. My dogs are doing their best to look like the picture next to the definition of "dog days."

Well, you just shot down my family's plans to move to Canada. We live just about in the exact middle of the United States - and it has been hotter here than in most of the country. 108 degrees(Farenheit) today. Our dinner conversations for the past two weeks keep reverting back to "let's move somewhere cooler" - and Canada came up more than once. Apparently my 8 y.o. was correct in suggesting the North Pole.

Yep, hot in Tucson. Usually a dry heat, but this is monsoon season, so we get humidity too. Right now, at 6 p.m. it's 97F. The compensation, though, is that the desert smells fantastic when it rains. If you wafted that smell under my nose anywhere in the world I'd know it as "home". I'm knitting with cotton tonight.

Posted by: Lois at July 6, 2012 9:19 PM

Almost 9:15 p.m., and it's 91 with a heat index of 101. It's supposed to be over 100 again tomorrow, and hoping it cools off a bit on Sunday.

The yarn is beautiful.

It has been so lovely here today--1.5 hours south of Portland, Oregon--sunny and sweet. The high was 76.5 F. I "braved the heat" and went outside to trim shrubs wearing my hat, long sleeved cotton shirt, long pants, cotton socks and tennis shoes. This is the first week that I have set aside my woolens to enjoy cotton clothing. But I keep my sweater handy....it has been soooo damp and chilly since last September that we are thankful for any blue in the sky. I knit on...

100 F in Columbus Ohio today with 100 predicted for tomorrow. We are lucky, we have power but there are still 79000 people in Ohio with no power thanks to the lovely wind/rain storm we had last Friday night. Aggravated by 3 or 4 more thunderstorms since then. We are having an extremely dry summer and while we have had rain it is not enough. We need a 3 day soaker.

Posted by: Ellen at July 6, 2012 9:24 PM

It was a cool 91 degrees today. I work in an enoumous wearhouse and the concreat has soaked up all the heat from the prior week and kept it just for use order pickers. We can't walk a few feet without sweating! Tomorrow it will be 98...again. We have window air conditoners that are mad at us because we have not turned them off since 30 June! I am weaving on my Kromske Harp and knitting a pair of socks. I am not worried. By October we may be up to our noses in snow.

Just seems to go that way.....

Ironically, if you want to cool off, come south. It's been a 107 F or so in South Carolina, but the A/C does wonders for one's mood. I still wore a knit shrug inside today because my office is chilly. (You can laugh at us in February when we don't know how to drive with half an inch of snow. Fair is fair.)

What you could probably try though is Iced Tea or Sweet Tea. (We usually just call it "Tea"). Take your favorite hot tea, stir in lots of sugar while it's hot, then add ice or cold water and put it in the fridge for a few hours. Make it by the pitcher, not the cupful.

Southerners have taken the edge off of Satan's Armpit weather with sweet tea for centuries. This kind of weather is why it exists. Cold beer is great, but you'll either get dehydrated or strange looks if you start drinking it at 9:00 a.m. Stay cool, Stephanie.

I moved to Bellingham, Wa 2 years ago and I have been feeling sad about the lack of light and warmth, until I saw the cnn map of the US. The whole thing was red with a little yellow around the edges except where I live where is was a cool green color. My former home in Maryland is experiencing a state of emergency and I am still wearing a sweater to work at 7am. I feel pretty lucky and not at all sweaty!!

Posted by: Jeannie at July 6, 2012 10:08 PM

Yep, hot and really humid in Ypsilanti, MI. No AC in our humble abode. The heat is meh, but I can barely think in the humidity and I'm surprised that between my sweaty fingers and the humidity, that the computer hasn't shorted. No knitting for me today except while sitting in a hospital waiting room with a family member. Knitting is a sanity saver for me and a distraction for the non-knitting family members as they make the typical comments about "cute, not having patience, and time." (you know) Due to the crisis all comments were forgiven.

Not everyone has power in NJ after last week's storms. Happily I do and I am sharing my home with my electricity-less parents. My mom and I are having a blast talking and knitting until all hours of the night. They're calling for 102 tomorrow. My mother says they used to put wet towels in the open windows as a type of primitive a/c when she was a kid. Who knows- it might work.

Some wiseass apparently accepted this weather package meant for Arizona this week. It was 105F degrees this afternoon. This is eastern Iowa, and it was freaking 105F degrees. I can't even begin to enumerate the reasons why this is so wrong.

Posted by: roggey at July 6, 2012 10:16 PM

YES! It's been miserably hot & humid in Atlanta, but ironically, it's hotter NORTH of us. This is beyond comprehension and difficult to fathom. Or maybe the heat has finally melted what is left of my brain. I am knitting as a reason/excuse to remain inside, but am avoiding any fiber that might spontaneously combust.

Posted by: Amanda at July 6, 2012 10:16 PM

It was the second warm day in Seattle. I was sitting in the shade on the beach and was glad to have my almost-finished Central Park unhoodie in my lap since my legs were quite chilly :) I am glad that I am finally warm enough at home that I don't have to wear wool socks, lol. And I do believe it was the first day this summer that I didn't bring a wool garment to wear.

Posted by: crazyestonian at July 6, 2012 10:17 PM

After three record-breaking or -tying days here in Chicago, my best advice to you, dear YH:

Get a window air conditioner. Now. Before you and the cat spontaneously combust. You're going to have this $%&^% at least through Sunday.

It doesn't have to be a big, expensive one designed to cool an entire floor of the house. Just cooling and dehumidifying your bedroom or the living room should be enough.

Otherwise, consider sleeping in the basement to stay cool.

Posted by: Anonymous, too at July 6, 2012 10:17 PM

Here in the PNW we were delighted to climb to 26 C today. Most of us out here also have no AC.

Good luck in those two hot training rides. Heat is the worst. Be sure to dump water on you as well as in you.

Posted by: Cindyh at July 6, 2012 10:20 PM

Boy oh boy - is it hot here in the great state of Minnesota! We've had a week-long run of excessive heat in a house with no air conditioning. But relief is in site! Tomorrow (Saturday) we expect a BIG drop in temperature and should reach the mid to low 80s. Hang in there Yarn Harlot - I'm sending the cool air your way!

I flew 6 hrs south to Costa Rica and it's not too bad here, actually. Rain every evening really cools things off. Also, I'm knitting silk thread I dyed at a knot hysteria retreat. It's looking pretty nice.

Yes, it's very hot and muggy here in Ottawa, 41 C with humidex today.

Posted by: Carmen at July 6, 2012 10:36 PM

I feel for you.

After the summer from hell last year, I find that 95 F feels almost balmy - at least for a while.

And we do have a lot of air conditioning down here in Texas, so we're prepared.

I am amazed that you can even touch wool in the heat, however. Serious knitting cred for that!

Posted by: Ellen at July 6, 2012 10:38 PM

In Washington DC it is going to be 102* tomorrow. With the heat index, its going to feel like 105*. And there are still many people without power from the storm last week. Not even a fan to coll them off. I'm so lucky I got my power back after only 16 hours.

Posted by: June K at July 6, 2012 10:43 PM

Yes, it is hot here in Connecticut. The lawn is starting to go brown, the birds aren't singing as much and the heat makes everything seem much more of an effort. Here's to fall.

Posted by: Lydia at July 6, 2012 10:46 PM

Actually, Satan was seen at Wal-Mart, buying an air conditioned & a 12-pack of Coronas.

Here in the PNW (Washington State) we have been waiting and waiting and waiting for summer to arrive which it finally did in time to celebrate our countries birthday. It was actually possible to sit out on my front porch and watch the neighborhood fireworks without having to bundle up in a blanket. The joke here is that summer arrives on July 5th in the PNW and that includes beautiful Oregon.

Yep, hot here on this side of the lake...high of 95 today. We put water in the pool to cool it down a bit.

I thought I was going to melt taking pictures of fiber earlier today. I think I'll just weave for a bit, then call it a night.

Posted by: Diane at July 6, 2012 10:58 PM

Our house over here across the lake isn't too bad, but I know what you mean. An old house smells different in the heat. Kind of dry and woody. Like ironing dirty clothes.

Should cool off a bit Saturday and Sunday.

Posted by: helena at July 6, 2012 11:05 PM

At temps above 95F, you can turn your vehicle into a solar oven. Line windshield area with aluminun foil. A small pan of cookies will bake in about 4 hours in full sun.

And it keeps your neighbors/co-workers entertained! ;-)

I'm from Singapore and it is 34-36C with 80-90% humidity. Why knit? Knitting is an addiction and knitted work has little practical use for outdoor tropics. I'm working out knit instructions to shorten the hemline, sleeves to make the next cardigan suitable for the air-con ;)

Posted by: DC at July 6, 2012 11:15 PM

Posted by: artiscentral at July 6, 2012 11:17 PM

Yeah, we're pretty hot out here in Mesa, Arizona... it's pushing 110 degrees F AND we're experiencing some humidity because we've been having rain on and off lately, which is so nice. The rain, not the humidity. But the rain cools it right down again and I love it. We have A/C, of course, so we're probably not suffering quite like you are, but I totally understand what you're saying about opening the door and realizing that there's just nothing that's worth it. I've learned how to substitute almost ANY ingredient in ANY recipe I have specifically because I become a crazed little hermit during the summer. There is virtually nothing that will drag me from the house in the heat of the day during June-August. I tell people that summer is like winter for other people. In winter, people tend to gather around their fire and just spend time together rather than face the elements. For us, we gather around the fan drinking cold water and eating freezing cold berries from the fridge. It works. ^_~

Remember the rain that you have, um, trouble with in the Pacific Northwest?? We are currently experiencing our reward for putting up with it all fall/spring/winter: dry gorgeous days in Portland that hit about 80 in the afternoon, cooling to 60s at night. Time to come visit Tina and start planning that 2014 sock summit!!

Yes, it's HOT . . 102 degrees F in Minneapolis fercryin' outloud! I guess I won't complain too much. A cool front moved through and dropped temps about 12 degrees in 15 minutes. Down into the mid 80s for the Twin Cities this weekend. Lovely spinning, Stephanie.

HOT here too in SE Wisconsin - and no central air, but at least we have a window unit in our bedroom. I used to hate A/C, but as I get older, I hate the heat more, so someday might succumb and get central air. Have been thinking of you training in this heat - I think the fan and the cold beer sounds infinitely better!

Posted by: Lael at July 7, 2012 12:29 AM

Yep, it's pretty hot here. Over 100 (F) for 3 days in a row in Madison, WI, and that is unheard of here. Just ridiculous. We are in a bad drought, too, so farmers are desperate, which is distressing and sad. Of course this is the one week in who knows how many years both my brother AND our cousin (and their respective spouses) are up here to visit! So much for all the fun outdoor stuff I had in mind for us to do. Cold beer has definitely been on the agenda ;)

Good thing you'll be in Vancouver next week! Our summer finally came this week and it was up all the way to 22 today! Not much humidity. It'll be a nice break for you.

Posted by: Mandy at July 7, 2012 12:38 AM

Much sympathy with the humidity and heat! 39 C (102 F) here in Minneapolis. Stopping at a long traffic light with the cohort of bikers on the way home after work felt like some cruel god was toasting us for dinner.

I also used to be anti- air conditioner, but I can justify it for a week or two out of the whole year. Taking that humidity out of the air just in one room is worth it to sleep in one's own bed. The spouse and I too have done the sleep on the floor in the living room as the upstairs was ridiculous to think about inhabiting.

Keep cool, hoping that the north wind also is blowing through Toronto Friday night.

Gawd I love living at 7000+ feet. 76F for the high today here in Santa Fe, NM. No A/C but we haven't felt the lack too much. Granted it was in the 90's last week, but it's a dry heat. Anyone who says that doesn't matter has never spent the summer in northeastern Oklahoma. It ain't pretty.

All y'all still living in the armpit of hell have my sincere sympathies!

Almost midnight, and it's still 91F in St. Louis. We're not just hot during the day -- we don't turn it off at night!

And, of course, we went to the baseball game last night, and the Muny tonight. So we were sitting out in the 100F plus heat like a bunch of crazies. I think we're starting to acclimate. It's sort of scary to think about.

I can't believe how many people are still biking around, though, right in the middle of it. A dedicated bunch!

If it makes you feel better, your stats about spinning mean nothing to me. I'm just a knitter, not a spinner, and I don't know anything about grams or whatnot. I'm just impressed that your doing it in this heat at all.
At all.

Very, very hot here in Southern Michigan/Northern Indiana.
So hot that the heat index was 110F today.
So hot that I switched my car's thermometer to C instead of F because 38C made me feel cooler than 100F.
So hot that I did not work on my Stage 4 Tour de Sock socks this evening. I spent the evening in the pool, instead.
So hot that my best friend in Shreveport, Louisiana actually felt a little sorry for me...and I NEVER get any sympathy from him about heat in the summer.
Yep, it was hot. But you know what? It won't last long, and I still have knitting! :)

No, at leats not in daylight, it is warm to cool in the Betherlands, but at night.. oh boy, nighttemps are almost like days, too warm to sleep comd=fortable withoud AC. But.. look at England, they are flooded over there. Have you ever heard the organisation of a big event like the Formule I racing cars ask people NOT TO COME to the training sessions on saturday in order to keep the parkingsites (meadows) in a good enough condition for the races tomorrow to be used as a parking. They had 20.000 tickets available for today and waving goodbey to that income, now, that is foul weather in my world. Keep cool and enjoy your beer. Cold coffee with icecubes is lovely too.

Music festivals and other events are being cancelled on a daily basis. Soon there will be more slugs than vegetables, and we shall probably be drowned. The only thing saving me from utter despair is that it's not too hot to knit.

It is hot here in Massachusetts, although the weather reports claim it is cooler on the island where I live. It is hot enough for me. I got up at 5 to walk the dog and do what needs to be done before retreating to the fan and knitting. It is too hot for me to think about going to the beach, but I know that is where everyone else is headed.

About 100 for temp, not sure what the heat index was yesterday here in rural NC. Fans are doing a good job of keeping the worst of the heat at bay. Unfortunately the baby thinks 100 degree heat is the perfect time to snuggle, and she is a human furnace like her dad.
No AC for us either but MIL has central air so we can go over there if we need to cool down.

Try misting your sheets with water before going to bed, makes it nice and cool for a bit. Also mist yourself then sit in front of the fan.

Anyone over the pond fancy a house swap for a fortnight??? You can escape the heat whilst we embrace it (lush) and you can get so wet you'll develop gills to breathe and flippers for feet. A little bit longer and you may even be fluent in duck!!!! QUACK QUACK is duck for %$^*^ rain BTW!

Here in Fort Wayne, Indiana it's forecast to be 103 F with a heat index of 105 - 115 F. I actually left the house yesterday afternoon and had the terrifying sensation that the tires of my car were melting into the asphalt as I drove. My town is hosting the Gold Wing Rider's Association annual Wing Ding this week. People on large motorcycles from across the country are driving around wearing long sleeves, helmets, and gloves. I can't imagine how hot that must be since I can't even imagine taking a deep breath of this hot, humid air.

With 10 days solid of in the 100s, we are basking in 106 today with a heat index of 113 in St. Louis. After a few days fighting it and staying indoors I'm getting a severe case of cabin fever. So I'm heading out in it now. Moving sloowwly.

Finally. Not hot, but 80ish, which is about 27 in Canadian. It's been in the 50s & 60s here for quite awhile, so it's a welcome change for us in Bellingham WA, USA.

I'm quite amazed that you still have the energy to spin, or anything else for that matter.

Satan was Here last summer. I'm in TEXAS, between Huntsville and Bryan/College Station: high today, 94F - normal, bearable temperature (and we DO have a/c). After scrolling all the comments above, I believe the world has turned up-side-down! I sincerely empathize with the everyone's struggles with the heat. Do like the cows... just lay down where the air moves and wait.

So Stephanie is in one of Satan's armpits, and Lynn in Newmarket said she's in Satan's OTHER armpit. I'm about 50km/35miles south of them in St. Catharines ON, so that would mean I'm in Satan's ..... oh, ick!!!!!

(Although, it's been somewhat better after our tiny little thunderstorm this morning.)

Yes Steph,
It is hot even after the small bit of rain we had here in Oakville. *sigh* I love the warmth but I can do without the heat as of late. Still all in all I'm glad it's not snow, silver lining and all that.

Posted by: Kim F at July 7, 2012 2:53 PM

If you'll pardon the badly mixed description ... what we have is the tip of the (melting) iceberg of global warming, with its eccentric weather events. I don't have air conditioning either, Stephanie, so I get your dilemma and feelings of general weepyness. I admire that you are able to blog, and knit, and count stitches and follow a pattern. Perhaps this is the time for knitters to unite - sort of - by becoming involved with a local environment group.

Be well!!

Here is the SF Bay Area, it's really not hot at all - very non-summer like, particularly those of us that live a little inland and are used to summer weather in the 90's. However, it's good news for you because Berkeley is only supposed to be in the low 70's and 80's when you are here teaching/talking. Can't wait to take your sock class!

I'm going stir crazy staying in the house, with sir, and took a sweaty bike ride this morning and then sat out on the front porch with ice water. The weather is suppose to break tomorrow and be in the 80's the rest of the week. Now if we would only get some rain, we haven't had any good rain since the first week of April and are almost 9 inches behind. Even so I'm knitting wool,it will get cold someday.

It is currently 103 F, at 6:25 PM near Washington, D.C. My dad made the comment this morning that it's finally getting warm. He's funny. It's so hot, the cats are panting. I've never seen a cat pant, but they're walking around with their tongues lolling out.

We don't have AC. Last weekend our power was out for several days and boy, what a difference fans make.

Needless to say, Starbucks is looking like home these days to me and my knitting.

(I was at my LYS yesterday and the lady tried to interest me in mohair. I couldn't even think of it.)

Posted by: tubesock patti at July 7, 2012 6:51 PM

Just a note for pet-owners, especially those with cats: if your cats are 'panting', they are in severe heat distress! Dogs help themselves a bit by panting, but the only way cats have to cool down is through evaporation - they groom themselves to dampen their coats, and hope for a breeze to come their way. Help out both cats and dogs by gently wiping their head, neck and back with a cool, damp cloth (repeat as they dry off) and making sure that there is a fan moving the air at their level. If necessary, confine them to the coolest area in your home until the heat breaks.

Oddly, it's only 89-90 here in Texas. I feel a wee bit bad because we expect the heat, it isn't a horrible surprise.....ice, that is what always shocks us. The heat won't last forever though, because you'll be happy to know that the craft stores are already putting out Christmas decorations.

Posted by: katie metzroth at July 7, 2012 9:00 PM

One thing that I've discovered can help during horrible heat waves is a lukewarm shower at night. I can actually feel my body cooling down. And all the sweat and stickiness is gone, so when you go to bed you aren't as miserable. To those without power, I can't help you. I wish I could. I can't imagine surviving without power in such miserable weather. We're comfortable here. I hope your misery ends soon.

But having once survived five days without electricity following a January ice storm, believe me. You'll feel proud of yourself once the ordeal is over and you've had a chance to recover.

We're generally frugal...but my husband didn't even wince at the expense.

His Dad was with us and wanted to go home from our destination a different route, which took us a lot longer than we planned...It was 2 pm and miserably hot before we got home. Even on the motorcycle, it's just scorching hot air blowing on you. Holy Hades, Batman! Will this heat and drought stop anytime soon?

Posted by: Melissa Anderson at July 8, 2012 8:09 AM

In Central Virginia, it was 101 yesterday by 7pm it had cooled down to 99. It will probably be close to that again today. A terrible storm came through last weekend, leaving thousands without power. Most have power now, but there are still hundreds of people in 100 degree heat with NO electricity. No AC is one thing, people stealing AC units from churches is another.

Posted by: stephanie at July 8, 2012 8:11 AM

Here in the southern USA, we have AC but it is almost too much of a contrast. If I go out to get the mail (in the heat) and then come back inside, I immediately start to shiver. Makes for good knitting but also causes "reverse" cabin fever. If I can't get outside soon, I'll go mad.

I just had to share...I live in Florida and it's quite a bit cooler here than in the rest of North American right now. It maybe that because we are so used to the heat that 85-90 degrees is blissfully comfortable for us! Of course we only live an hour from the coast (as the crow flies) and we get those blessed Gulf breezes! The Florida interior (I am told) is miserable! (That would be Disney and the Orlando area.)
However, thanks to TS Debby, we are breeding mosquitos the likes of which I have never seen before...they are as big as rats!!!

When I was young (about 40 years ago), my mom's rule for going to the community pool was "only if it's above 70 degrees before noon". It's been "hot enough to go swimming" by 7 a.m. for most of the last week.

Here in central PA we're actually looking forward to highs in the mid-80s as predicted for next week....because that will be fifteen or more degrees cooler than what it has been!

The big arts festival in Centre County is usually the hottest week of the summer. If the weatherguessers' predictions come true, this will be the second year in the row that it's "not too bad"!

It is NOT hot here in Prince Rupert, BC. Wiki states this town has the most rainfall and the least sun of anywhere in Canada. We had about 2 nice weeks in May (sunny, but not warm) and that's it. How I would love to live somewhere again where there are seasons (as opposed to rain, rain, overcast and more rain).

Down here in Adelaide, Australia it is only hot because I have a lovely electric blanket. Our overnight low a couple of nights ago was 2c. Frost on the front lawn, lemon tree in the back yard. No wonder we all froze, the houses down here are built to keep the coolth in during our incendiary Summers, keeping the cold out is a foreign concept. I've been wearing layers and layers since moving back here from 14 years in mostly centrally heated NJ. My NJ friends and I are trying to work out we could arrange a heat/cold transfer, since they're all melting and I'm an icicle.

I'm in Normandy at the moment, where the temperature has been struggling to get much over 60F this week - in July. So much rain, grey sky and wind that it really does't feel like summer, except on the odd afternoon when the sun manages to peep out for an hour or two. Why can't the weather be spread around more evenly? Hope it cools down for you and warms up for us before long.

Posted by: Perpetua at July 8, 2012 1:58 PM

You know that old Mark Twain quote? The one that goes: The coldest winter I've spent is a summer in San Francisco?

We're not that cold. But the fog has been pleasantly cooling us off at night, and the daytime temps reach up into the 80s. Without much humidity.

We're due for a heat spell later this week - which means it will get drier. Imagine walking out, having the sun touch your skin and feeling it burn off one molecule at a time. I'll be hiding inside, too.

AND THEN, the already-over-90-degrees-HEAT smacked me upside the head. And I decided that, um, I should probably...seeing as how I am a SUPER-dedicated mother and all that kind of junk, well, I should NOBLY sacrifice my planned and beloved gardening to tend to the needs of my EVEN MORE beloved family! Knitting with Habu Gima cotton, so no worries about it being too warm. Although I despise the texture of the stuff ... but that has absolutely nothing to do with the heat. Re-doing the sleeves as I completely messed up with the row gauge; then blocking and sewing it all together and moving on to a nice cotton sweater for one of my daughters.

Since you closed the comments on the post I wanted to comment on, and I came to the party late, I will comment here. Stephanie, I am very disappointed in your post about the USOC flap. I understand about trademark - if they had been polite, it would have been fine. After that, I disagree with you. The insulting language of the letter went far and above anything tolerable. (And the apology and request for free items was not much better.) I am not a athlete-worshiper, and I think that the fact that they work hard at what they do does not make them inherently better than non-athletes. The point of any sort of "lympics" is that people do things to the best of their ability. To say that it's not a big deal that the USOC insulted a non-athletic endeavor just because the athletic competitors work harder, is almost as insulting as the original letter. Stephanie, I think that you let the knitting and crochet community down on this one. Are my knickers still in a twist over this? You bet, and I wasn't even part of the event on Ravelry.

Posted by: Jane at July 9, 2012 3:43 PM

Maybe this makes me a bad person, but I'm feeling a bit schadenfreude in the fact that for once, the rest of the country understands for a very small portion of the year what it feels like to be in Houston for the majority of the year. And knitters understand how miserable I am and how I can't even think about knitting a sweater in this heat, much less wearing one EVER (unless I am lucky enough to get some cold weather when I travel north for Christmas this year)!

Someday I will live somewhere where I can knit AND wear clothing. Until then it's blankets blankets blankets.

And the first 2 were 103* This has been the hottest driest year I can remember & I'm getting close to 70. And then a week ago Sunday, when we had planned on taking the grands to a water park (they were visiting from SE Louisiana where it was in the 80's most of the time they were here). My daughter's mother in law says it's her fault - wherever she goes, the temps go through the ceiling. They left the Chicago area for DC Saturday morning & Sunday the temp dropped here. But it was 100 in DC.

It's been in the upper 90s (I refuse to look, because if I know then I will feel worse) during the afternoons when I was off last week, and I spent a lot of that time over the stove, making custard bases (and non-custard bases) and caramels. It felt like a bad idea at the time, but the results were delicious!

As an aussie, I was going to tell you how it wasn't REALLY that hot, but did some googling first to make sure, and yeah, you can whinge about that :P
you DO aclimatize to temps like that if they're consistent, but when you get a few days here and there they're killers.
But i grew up with summers with several days above 40 and no air con really. tub of water in front of the fan helps, so does very little clothing :)
