Postcard from Squam

Very little time, and even less internet access, so it’s a wee postcard for you, mailed (when I find that elusive wi-fi again) from Squam Art Workshops.

We’ve had music and the lake, food and classes, and tonight I speak, and tomorrow – tomorrow is more of the same.  (Minus the speaking. I only have to do that once.) Having a wonderful time.  Wish you were here.

  1. Wish I were “here,” too. Oh, to be back in NH again. Enjoy every minute! Since I have a muggle day job, I feel as if I’m missing home and knitting.

  7. Looks great, the knitting and the fire very welcoming.
    Unfortunately I’m muggling today, though elder daughter is on a Teacher’s Only Day and is sitting in front of the Tyra Banks show with her knitting (you wouldn’t have seen that a year ago!) assimiliation is nearly complete – we went to a cafe for breakfast after watching younger daughter’s school assembly and she went to pull out her knitting but found she had left a needle at home, (I maybe getting places with the girl).
    Onwards and upwards, one boss has left work for me while he is off to Chicago’s ASCO conference, so when this lot of work is done it will be WOOT time. I may go looking for some sock needles (what was that about having 25 sets?, once I thought that OTT, but now I think it is quite reasonable, and wishing I had emulated you) – the purchase of new sets isn’t just to get started before you get home from LYS, but also because other knitting is on those needles, what a bother. I may start to purchase my way towards 25 sets. It is very tempting.
    Only June, and I think the adoption of my own Sock Club ziploc bags is going to become a reality.

    Just a note about Steven’s lace issue.
    I was looking through Vogue’s “early fall” issue
    today and there was a sweater very similar to
    what he was knitting, and it was called “cables and lace”. So is that a way to negotiate true peace amongst many?

  34. I’m lounging under the fan in a quiet house while the boys are asleep, and I have a table full of Shetland/Angora/silk to spin. Wish you were here! 😉

  36. Oh, I wish I were there, too! It makes me think of my Mom, who grew up in Meredith, and the summer when we spent time at the Roberts’ Camp (though I think that was on Winnepesaukee, not Squam). Lovely memories, thanks for bringing them back.

  43. I’m with Andrea! Shades of summer camp and my childhood. Two to four weeks every year were spent at lakeside summer camp (Girl Scout – no luxury here!)in New Hampshire. Haven’t been there since my daughter was eleven. That’s twenty years ago!
    Just got back from a month plus in the U.S. with a (very) sizable increase in my stash and a equally sizable decrease in my cash. It’s hot, hot, hot and I’ve been switching out the summer for winter clothes as fast as I can. Thank you for the postcard. It looks so cool and lovely. Wish I was there!

  49. Yup, getting to go to summer camp is one of the great advantages to your line of work. Enjoy! (I’ll have to settle for vicarious camp for now.)

  53. Year ago (like, the mid/late 70s) I recall going with a bunch of friends to Squam Lake and competing in a “non-boat open”, which meant build anything that wasn’t a boat, and get it from a very wet point A to a very wet point B.
    We did a stagecoach one year – it’s a beautiful area and I bet it’s even nicer with all that yarn!
    Isn’t Keepsake/Patternworks nearby? Maybe I’ll go after the kid goes to college…

  58. Sounds like a wonderful time…wish I were there too! Just heard about a similar event being sponsered by Vogue Knitting next January in New York City. Details to follow on their website in August. Sounds verrrry interesting……..you part of it? Hmmmmmmmm………

  69. I wish I could be there too, only I ‘have’ to be in Speyside, Scotland. Whisky sampling is compulsory. Knitting in the sun is optional, but very enjoyable. And I found a local shop that sells local Scottish alpaca – again, purchasing optional, but very nice.

  80. I drove by Squam Lake today on my way to Patternworks. I used to live in the area- what a beautiful spot for a knitting weekend. Enjoy!

  81. I wish I were there too, kind of. But only kind of, because it’s Fiber Frolic weekend, and I get to spend a weekend with my folks and at my favorite fiber festival. And this year I am here alone, which by itself is worth the price of admission.

  84. Squam is a beautiful lake. How lucky to be able to spend time there with friends and knitting, too!!! I grew up just a few miles from there and get back to visit NH (from WA) a couple of times a year. Visits to Patternworks (in Center Harbor), Inspire 2 Knit and Tea (in West Plymouth), and Elegant Ewe (in Concord) to pet and adopt yarn are mandatory when I’m there.

  86. Looks like a wonderful time was had by all. The setting plus the company, I’m sure, created a wonderful retreat-like learning experience.

  87. Looks heavenly!! You 4-season people must be absolutely living it up! I live in central California where we really only have 2 seasons: Cold and wet (winter time) or dry and hot (summer time) We usually have spring and autumn for about 10 days each. This year was unusual because we had spring for about 3 weeks! Oh, well, the hot weather set in, so I am an insider (as in: inside the house mostly) now.

  88. Wish I were there, too; it looks better than here! Good luck with the public speaking — I always hate the waiting when something like that is coming up. (Also, random, but I really love the colors in that braided rug!)

  91. Oh, we spent a week at Rockywold/Deephaven Camps one blessed June and we had the MOST fun! What a beautiful place. The screen windows in the cabins – NAILED into place; and the window sashes in the dining hall that go right down into the walls, out of sight. And the water bikes, and loons, and canoes, and owls, the ice house and ice man, the waffle machine, on and on. Did you get to Patternworks?

  92. Perfect setting for that beautiful green! I envy you havibg the stick-to-it-iveness to make actual wearables. I am hooked on lace, HATE setting in sleeves, and won’t do a bazillion rows of stockinette, so my work is voluminous but useless. I am really surprised at the color of Spring Tickle. I have had a skein for a couple years and not been moved to use it. Maybe now I will. So sorry you lost your needle down the drain. It’s like losing an old friend when that happens.
