Oh, They’re In There

Remember my to-do list? The one that required 20 rounds to be knit on Pretty Thing?

There they are. That there, my knitter friends is 42 rounds. What’s that you say? You can’t see them? Well they’re there. The first 20 were knit, and then I started thinking that the gauge was wrong. Well, that’s not true, technically. Technically I started thinking that the gauge was wrong on round 2, but why stop while you’re thinking about it? Not this knitter. No, no – I kept knitting. I kept knitting until I had 24 rounds, and then I ripped them all out and started again.

Things went pretty well for the first 7 rounds of the third attempt (oh, sorry – did I not mention the second attempt? The one where I beautifully executed the "not quite long enough tail cast on"? I specialize. I’m very good.) On round 7 of the third attempt, I established the lace.

On round 8, I realized that I had done no such thing, and instead of ripping, I tinked back, found the place where I’d slammed in an extra yarn-over, fixed it, and knit on. I knit on, that is, until the end of row 8 (again) when I realized that the lace was correct, however the total number of stitches was completely wrong.

Attempt number four, I made it to round 4, realized that the gauge was still crap, and ripped back again. Now I’m on the fifth attempt, and I have knit 6 rounds, and that means the math goes like this.

24 + 8 – 1 + 1 + 4 + 6 = 42

42 is way more than 20, and I don’t care if most of them are invisible rounds. I’m totally leaving it crossed off on my list. Damn straight, and screw you, knitting.

And yes, those rounds totally count. You knit them, they count, even if no one else can see them.

BTW, I finally finished Romi’s Brandywind Shawl after 2 almost-complete rip outs and the discovery that 4mm needles ARE NOT US size 4 during the third version. I know what! Two years in the making. No, I didn’t rip out a third time, just kept on knitting more repeats. It’s lovely.

Blame it on the heat! I just love to hear how you screw up, because it makes me feel so much better when I do the same. In fact, I just spent 2 days knitting a cowl neck onto a jacket. Actually I knitted it 3 times because apparently I couldn’t follow my own instructions–and I can’t blame the heat because our air-conditioning is on.

This happened to me last week withy the hemlock blanket… I ripped it out so many times I could have probably finished the blanket…my solution was to rip it out and crochet a beautiful shawl with it…

I love it! This kind of roundabout thing happened to me once when I started a hat with a lace edge. The yarn was mainly silk. Add to this the fact that the yarn was black with its low-visibility issues. So the combo of lace, slippery silk and hard-to-see-black left me feeling like I was all thumbs. The thing wasn’t right until the 4th start-up attempt. Now it’s one of my favorite hats!

That’s the great thing about to-do lists. You get to decide what goes on there, and then you get to decide when it is sufficiently completed enough to cross off. It’s really all about piece of mind and creative self management. Some days, when I’m feeling very unmotivated, showering goes on the list. Also, I do agree with Brandi that tinking back is technically knitting and therefore you can give yourself at least 43 rows…

I had some qiviuk/silk which I had saved for a couple of years till I felt confident to use it. I made a Pretty Thing. Disappointment cannot describe the outcome. There was absolutely no elasticity in the finished piece, and it lies in a drawer awaiting the time when I will start the dreaded tink. It looks great till you put it on, then it just falls. Too exquisite a yarn to waste.

Gee, that has certainly been my kind of experience with lace. As soon as I think “I’ve got it this time!….”; eventually, 4 -8 rows later I’m humbled and cursing and unknitting once again. Hey, the same thing happened to me when I tried to make a Pretty Thing. I was so sure the yarn wanted to be a Pretty Thing. I could just hear it telling me that was its destiny. I could even visualize the final product. Oh goodness. The casting on, the tinking back, the ripping, the casting on (again!), mix it up and repeat at least twice. And when I did, finally, get on track somehow I just wasn’t feeling it. That yarn became something else. And Pretty Thing is still calling me. And then I see it in gold quivit/silk. I still want a Pretty Thing. Maybe it is time to try again. It is strangely comforting that even the pattern writing is having trouble with the pattern. Only there is no lace weight lurking in the stash for such a project. Hot pink fingering but without a haze, which is part of what makes Pretty Thing just so very nice. Maybe a wee trip to the LYS is in store… hmm…

Love it. Sorry to say, but I’m glad it doesn’t just happen to me. About half my projects go that way. Worst yet is my attempt at Cookie A’s Monkey socks. I discovered after finishing the 1st one that it was too small in the instep (after forcing it on my foot and managing to get it off).
As you know, a good sense of humor and a tasty beer help a lot. Vinho Verde is a great sub for the beer.

I know it’s hot which doesn’t help at all. How about some time at an AC’d place where you can bring your laptop and knitting and sit by yourself for a while?

Then we find out that maybe we are not in the right frame of mind, maybe the needles and the yarn is just not right. (mostly the yarn is not the right yarn for the project) …which is why we have ‘re wound balls in our stash closet.
Test swatches usually only measure 4×4 so we don’t make us crazy, and it’s taken me 4 years to realize that I need to swatch if I’m not using the exact same yarn that the pattern requires.

I’m knitting a scarf, and the stitch count is coming out wrong. I took it out and re-did it, and it’s still coming out wrong. Somewhere in the last repeat, I have a mistake I can’t find….

You know the secret to never having that long tail problem, right? You cast on with both ends of the ball. (pull from both ends of the ball, or from two balls, make a slip knot with both ends held together, use those two strands to do your long tail cast on, cut one of the ends, then slip off and undo the slip knot when you’re done.) Voila, never have to worry about running out again!

Thanks for this post! I really related to it. I’ve been knitting a slouchy lace hat and having problems. By the time I finished the first one, I gave it away just so I’d never have to look at it again. But of course, I tried knitting it again, in a different yarn. Gave that one away too! LOL Since then, I’ve knit it two more times and I swear, I’m gonna keep knitting this pattern until I can knit it straight through without a mistake! May take awhile! rofl!

I must be a bad person, but this makes me feel somewhat better about my knitting. I spent 2 hours last night tearing out over 20 rows of a shawl and getting the bloody stitches back on the needle in the correct orientation.It wore me out so much that I couldn’t even knit a single stitch and had to go to bed. And today I am still knitting the same yarn over again. I will feel so much better when I have to pull virgin yarn from the skein.

I was in the car for 10 hours today. I knit for most of it and my sweater isn’t much bigger than when I started knitting this morning. I think I’ve knit the same 10 rows at least 6 times because the stupid increases didn’t line up properly. I have an extra stitch but I’ve decided I don’t care.

Hi, Stephanie,
This is my cure for long tail cast on issues. Take the thread from the inside of the ball and the thread from the outside of the ball and tie a knot. Lay the knot over the needle, arrange the threads in your fingers as usual for long tail cast on and begin casting on. When you get to the correct stitch count (count twice) cut the outside thread and continue with the inside one. You are never too short or too long this way. Great for mega-stitch cast-ons. Like the Estonian lace shawl that begins “cast on 740 stitches since it begins with the entire outer edging first”. Except with lace I like the knitted on cast on. It will give as much as needed for blocking the edge.

And I know about the tail on the cast-on. I thought I’d be thrilled with a knitted-on cast on – either the one where you knit each stitch on, or knit between the prior stitches, but those always look too lacy to me.
