Not a good sign

I wasn’t going to blog today. I was going to catch up on the housework, do my real job and go shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, which in some insane moment fuelled by only by caffeine, I have decided to host at my home. Clearly the sleep deprivation caused by my demanding relationship with Rhinebeck is starting to effect me. I have decided to stay with the sweater, even though it continues to thwart me at every turn. I’ve made this decision, not because it’s such a great sweater, but because I am a stubborn, stubborn woman who cannot take the public humiliation of being beaten by skeins of wool.

I am beginning to dream of other projects. Just a little hat, or maybe just a row or two of a mitten….In a weak moment I wound the yarn for a pair of Fleece Artist socks.

I am ashamed that I made Rhinebeck watch, just to threaten it. I am more ashamed that I may have come to believe that this sweater has an actual personality, and that it may not like me.
Pass the coffee.

  1. Oh MY! The Rhinebeck sweater *and* Thanksgiving dinner? That must have been some strong coffee!
Rhinebeck is looking wonderful, despite its rebellious streak. I don’t think you ought to be ashamed of making it watch the winding. At least you didn’t physically rub the Fleece Artist wool in the RC’s face though… right?
Happy Thanksgiving! Maybe this is the year that your girls cook the turkey…!

  2. Hey, Rhinebeck knew what it was getting into with you…knew you had expectations…I think drastic measures are called for, all things considered, and having Rhinebeck watch some other yarn get your attention..well, it just proves you are a highly sought-after knitter and if it doesn’t watch out…well…you could move on.
    🙂

  3. But do you really care if it likes you? What you want is respect. And even more important is that it knows that you like and respect yourself. You want to show it that you can stand on your own, and you don’t need it to like you in order for you to be a happy, cool guy.
oh, sorry. My stepson has been home for a few days, after a suspension for fighting in school. Apparantly the speech works for sweaters, too.

  4. Oh, Steph — the sweater makes me woozy it’s so gorgeous.
Tease me: What’s the weight, gauge, and amount of yarn you’re using? Maybe I’ll go shopping for yarn for mine….the one I’m going to make….as soon as you make this pattern available…..
Offer for first-born still stands, if you need the incentive.
I forgot to mention a few posts ago that they had deep-fried Twinkies at the Virginia State Fair. (You’re gagging; I was squealing and pointing.) I resisted those but did splurge on a batch of deep-fried Oreos.
Speaking of woozy! Of course, I don’t expect the sweater to cause the fat-and-sugar hangover that I willingly experienced after the Oreos….
Now: back to work! We can’t have you dawdling around reading comments, can we now?

  5. Wait, WHAT?!?!?
Thanksgiving is THIS WEEKEND in Canada?!?!??!
Oh, see, I didn’t realize how seriously insane this sweater had made you. Thanksgiving in the US is at the end of November, so I figured you had committed yourself to something that happened AFTER RHINEBECK. You crazy lunatic, you agreed to host a family Thanksgiving THIS WEEKEND!?!??!?!?!
Fellow blog-readers, what do you think — do we need to do an intervention on Steph and the Sweater?
    Yowsa. THIS weekend?
Oh, this is getting more and more fun to watch.

  6. Good gods, you’ve been reduced to participating in fiber voyeurism?! I suspect its what it has wanted from you since the very beginning, Harlot. Naughty, bad little RS!

  7. Ever since the Latvian Mitts episode, I have been checking your photos carefully.
O.K. – indulge me here. I see your centre cable. Then, moving to the next cable to the right (in the photo), looking at the third “twist” from the ribbing, is it going in the correct direction? On my monitor, it doesn’t appear to be going in the same direction as the ones above and below. If so, I trust you don’t have my address. A caffeine-overloaded, sleep deprived woman with an “oopsy” cable is not someone I wish to encounter.
Note to your kids. Here is an opportunity to shine in the Thanksigiving-Dinner cooking area. Go for it!

  8. Golly, that’s beautiful.
How do you do it? It would have taken me days, nay, WEEKS to do one sleeve, and you’re running up the back like no one’s business. And planning Thanksgiving dinner. AND working and raising three girls and a husband.
I must humbly bow to you, Queen Of Not Only The World, But Also Of Multitasking.

  9. That’s right, show the damn sweater who’s boss. Show her that there are other hanks of wool waiting to be wound up & knit. I guarantee that’ll whip her into shape.
Not that it’s worked for me yet.

  10. Stephanie, would it help any if I told you the Rhinebeck Sweater is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen and that I’ve set up a permanent altar to it in my home?

  11. Stephanie i also worship at your feet! and it was good to show the RBSweater who is boss!! hee..hee.. i love the analgy stories.. 🙂 looking forward to seeing you up close and personal at the fest.. will you be there sunday i hope!? karola

  12. Rhinebeck is a most stunningly beautiful sweater. And it’s grown ! I have complete faith in your ability to finish it on time.
You are so very funny.Such a great wordsmith.I don’t even try to be amusing in my comments as I simply can’t compete.

  13. But the sweater is so gorgeous! You must be neurotic as well as stubborn. And hey, if you run out of time, you can always make it a midriff-baring sweater.

  14. Maybe Rhinebeck and you should think about seeking relationship counseling? Itmust be so hard not to turn to a pair of socks or a simple, easy, pleasant little hat. But hang in there. It looks like this relationship could pay off in the end.
After all just pour yourself another cup of coffee and try and be rational(????) 😉
    And have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. Look, Harlot, if the sweater’s really driving you insane, and you just can’t make it work out for you, I have the perfect solution:
    Give. It. To. Me.
No, really, don’t thank me! I’m happy to help.

  16. Love the Rhineback – can’t wait to see a pi with you wearing it ! Have a Happy Thanksgiving !

  17. Oh, my. You must be a long lost cousin or some such thing. Which is why your plan seems perfectly reasonable and workable to me. Heck, you should actually get in a few hours of sleep here and there before Rhineback. Carry on.

  18. You ARE insane. But at least in a good way.
Am I the only one who thought “being beaten by skeins of wool” sounded kinkier that it should be?

  19. Oh my lord.
Like MaryB, I thought you had lost it, shopping for Thanksgiving (a November holiday) not only a month and a half in advance, but… during a time when you have, what, five days to finish the lovely Rhinebeck Sweater??
Then I kept reading more and more comments that just nonchalantly wished you a Happy Thanksgiving, as if nothing was amiss…. so to sate my curiosity, I had to Google ‘Canadian Thanksgiving’ and lo and behold, I have revealed my ignorance of Canadian tradition.
    So um… Happy Thanksgiving! 😀

  20. Dude, I got an email from Rhinebeck this afternoon:
“When you C those 2, Sylvia and her syster, on Sundae, if you kut the sleeves off there new sweatres, I will come live with U when shee’s dun.”
On the one hand, it wants you to be triumphant at the festival. On the other, it wants to defect to the West Coast. Not sure what to make of it, but I thought you should know.

  21. hello remember me the french girl from england
your sweater look’s lovely , i like it, this is a very god job and the colors wouah ohlala!
    happy thanksginving …
just i do not know about this i know halloween but thanksgiving?? just i know you eat a turkey
but where this day come from?

  22. I googled on Canadian Thanksgiving, too, and came up with a moose steak recipe. But you’re vegetarian, right? Are there any tofu moose steaks out there? I know that here near San Francisco, you can get a tofu turkey with up to six drumsticks on it.

  23. That WILL be a great sweater, you CAN do it! Had to laugh at your earlier post regarding Canadians reluctance to fire up the furnace. We still have yet to do so, compared notes with the neighbors across the road today and they HAVE! Pansies, HA HA HA!! In fact, I am refusing to admit fall is here and still wearing SHORTS (albeit with wool socks and a sweatshirt..) What is it with us crazy Canadians?! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

  24. You can do it. Just have the sleeve you haven’t finished in the bathroom. (kidding)
It’s beautiful, it really is. And, I was thinking…It has to be finished by Rhinebeck, right? How about the END of Rhinebeck? No one ever said anything about it being done at the START of the friggen festival.
    Just a thought.
    Bippy

  25. Hello?! um, Are you okay?, It’s been two days since you’ve posted, did they have you commited over the Rhinebeck Sweater? Kick That Sweater’s Ass!

  26. Things this US resident likes about Canada:
    1. Canadians celebrate holidays on the actual day, like Thanksgiving.
    2. Your holidays actually mean something, instead of our Columbus Day.
    3. You get so many holidays.
