This morning dawned bright and early (one way in which life with a five year old is different than that with teens. The five year old gets up in the morning where you have to hold a mirror under the teenagers nostrils around 11 to see if they are actually alive) and Hank went to the front door and got this.
I don’t talk about it much, but I write books. Knitting books. Silly knitting books, just little wee ideas about knitting, like in this one….
![]()
“At Knit’s End : Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much” (Stephanie Pearl-McPhee)
or longer stories about knitting, like in this one.
![]()
“Yarn Harlot : The Secret Life of a Knitter” (Stephanie Pearl-McPhee)
No patterns, no help, nothing useful at all…just thinking about knitting and knitting humour. (I know. Don’t ever try to explain this genre at a party. Say you write books and then pull the fire alarm to get out of there before they ask you what kind. Trust me.) From time to time I get an email from someone who wonders why the books aren’t plastered all over the blog and why I don’t mention them all the time….and, well. I don’t know why. I’m certainly proud of them, and I certainly don’t think that there is anything wrong with standing up and saying so when you’ve done a big job fairly well. As a matter of fact, I regularly applaud other people, especially women, and especially knitters, who give their work it’s proper due and take credit for their own intelligence and achievements.
I think my reluctance to do the same for myself comes from some very early lessons taught to me about things like being humble, not blowing your own horn and pride going before a fall. Or perhaps my family’s belief that if your talent happens to be writing books, it doesn’t make you any more special than someone who’s talent is accounting or working a factory line. It could also be that while I have been extraordinarily successful in this life in all the ways that matter…I have many friends, a very good family, healthy children….yarn. I have never been very successful in the ways that society measures it.
My house is very small, my clothes are ratty, I can’t seem to accessorize and I don’t get my hair cut often enough…and since Joe and I both work freelance, money is always, well. Interesting. A lot of this is my own fault, money wise, it was important to me to stay home with the girls (I knew I wouldn’t get paid for that), it was me who decided to do LC and Doula work on a sliding scale, and some of it was the fates…like Joe and I both getting completely wiped out of our jobs at the same time when SARS rolled through Toronto. Really, waking up one morning two years ago, making a decision that I would take a stab at my goal of being a writer (what the hell. I was unemployed.) and having it go so well, being this lucky, having all of the stars aligned in a way that let me not only support my family in a way that I love, but realize a dream for myself…. I think I worry that any minute now the planet is going to notice that I’m getting so much of what I’ve always wanted, realize its cosmic mistake and send me right back to where I belong. This fear is compounded by knowing with absolute shining certainty that much of the good fortune I have had in the last year is the product of timing and luck, for which I take no credit. There are many smarter, more talented writers starving in crappy basement apartments all over the world who deserve to do better.
So when something like this happens, when a book I wrote appears in my mailbox from the printer with charming notes like “hope you like it” written on it I’m completely torn. Part of me wants to scream “Look! A book! With my name on it!” and throw a big party, and part of me wants to say. “There. Good job.” and quietly go back to my knitting before Mr. Washie breaks down to remind me of my place.
I have positioned the book with the latest skein of Joe’s Gansey yarn so that Rams won’t think I’m losing my focus. I know where her priorities lie. In fact,
a closer look, just for Rams. The book that it lies upon is my third. (You can get a better look here, though Amazon still has the old cover and title.) I did some checking this morning and looked back at my archives and lo and behold, it was March 15th of last year, exactly one year ago today that I held my first book in my hands for the first time. What a crazy 365 days. I’m so very grateful to everyone who has contributed to this wonderful journey and kept the whole thing from being a public humiliation.
This book has stuff like the first two in it, stories, ideas, funny things about knitting…but it is also the first book I’ve written that pretends in any small way to be useful. My sock recipe is in there, some stuff I’ve found to be helpful…
and anything I could think of that I could tell knitters before they learned the hard way.
It’s still that bizarre “knitting humour” genre that you can’t discuss at parties, but I’m proud of it and I hope you like it, and I hope that it doesn’t disappoint. It should start turning up in stores next week.
Now move along. Nothing to see here.
(PS. There will be a tour, it will be in April, August and September, and I’ll give you the details when I know ’em.)
Congratulations! Group hug. We are proud of you, too!
I saw I could be the first to post and so I had to jump in! Loved the first 2 books, can’t wait to see this one. Take your blessings Stephanie!
OK, you be humble, I’ll be proud for you. Congratulations!
Aah! I’m not a fast enough typist!! 🙂
Stephanie- You have every right to be proud of yourself, as well as the knitters in the GTA for putting us on the map. You’ve made your dreams a reality, and not many of us can do that. Well done Girl. Looking forward to the new book!
woohoo! congrats! it looks fantastic! I think it’s great and you should be proud and happy about it! woo!
[and the yarn for joe’s gansey looks fantastic too.]
YAY! Congrats on the third book, the great year, and here’s to many more successes for you and your family. (I think that was some really terrible grammer, but what the hey, it says what I mean.)
Congratulations, Stephanie! Love the cover!!
Wow! 3 books in a year. I still need to buy the first one (the library’s sending out their bloodhounds to get me)
you go girl! I’m glad the stars have aligned properly for you in the past year…………keep up the good work on putting Christmas stash away early
Congratulations! I just finished your first book last week and loved every minute of it (although got some weird looks from fellow bus riders for my chuckling). Can’t wait to get my hands on this one.
look out people, outa the way, gotta get the new book – quick quick quick – ouch – dam door!!!
Shelley
It’s hard to explain to people “it’s a book about knitting” when they ask what you are reading that has made you laugh so hard. They think you’re a bit touched in the head.
Ah well, can’t wait to read it!! I do hope the bookbookbook tour brings you through Boston again!
Yay on the third book! I can’t wait to add it to my collection of Yarn Harlot humor. 😀
Oh, it is so very cool! I know its hard to toot your own horn, but you deserve it. You need to realize that the universe also recognizes hard work when it sees it and you have worked very hard! You’ve also put up with Mr. Washie, strange tellers who have no clue about the Knitting Olympics and many other obstacles along this road. We’re very proud of you. Can’t wait to get my hands on it now that I know its really real! Congrats!
Humility. Bashful Nature. Down to earth. these are all the reasons I’m wild about you.
COME TO KANSAS! The eastern part, Kansas City or Lawrence would be nice. Just sayin!
I’ve got the book preordered and I can’t wait 🙂
Oh, how wonderful! I’m so happy for you, and I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on it 🙂
Oh, for your sock recipe alone, this is the book I have been waiting for. Just to be like you. Congratulations.
It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. Your writing spreads warmth, love and laughter to everyone. Congratulations on BookBookBook3.
Eh, there’s only so many pattern books I can handle. I can’t take a pattern book to read in bed. Well, I can, but then I’d have to start knitting something and then I’d never sleep. So I say “knitting prose” is a necessary genre, if only to make sure I get enough sleep.
New book? Yay!
Congrats! Definitely like the new cover, but “where is yarn boy?”
Ditto all the others. Congratulations! I have never posted comments here since there are always 50 million others and really there is nothing brilliant or witty that I could add but since there are so few comments yet today, I just wanted to let you know that I greatly enjoy your blog and your books. Thank you so much for such wonderful contributions to the world of knitting.
Congratulations, that is so wonderful! I understand your mixed feelings, but I know we are all tremendously proud of you! Hurrah!
Can’t wait to read it, if ANYONE can make me learn to accept swatching, it’s you! 😉
Great! I can’t wait to get book 3. I’ve read and reread and reread Meditations. I also read the second book, but had to give it back to my daughter to whom it belonged. Congratulations on all your books and on things going well for you.
Awesome. If the humor in your book is even remotely like the humor in your blog, it will be a huge success. Congratulations! I can’t wait to read it.
Congratulations, Dear Harlot. You are indeed successful at the most important things, and this other stuff, too.
Just remember, if you spend too much time looking over your shoulder to see if the planet is sneaking up on you, you are gonna walk slap up into a lamppole.
Lucky Hank – has the new book in his chubby little toddler hands — I’m so jealous!!!!!!!
Yeah – the 3rd book! I can’t wait. I’ve loved the 1st two to shreds. I’ve gifted the first one many times over and simply can’t wait to get my hands on the latest installment.
WOOT!!! Congrats! So very very very exciting!!
(And yes, I know full well the bizarre looks regarding knitting humor, or hell anything knitting. If I had a $1 for every bizarre look I got when trying to explain the Knitting Olympics I’d be a very rich woman.)
I much like the new cover vs. the one shown on Amazon.com
I may have to memorize the gauge chapter and say it aloud during classes while people are making the required gauge swatch and complaining about it.
And I can relate on a MUCH smaller scale – I gave up a lucrative job in nursing to…well…to rear children, chickens and knitted things. And now every time someone looks at a pattern and says how stellar it is I am torn between leaping around the store cheering or just nodding and saying thanks – or – the worst – pointing out every imaginable error and flaw.
Congrats on a very crazy year! You deserve it. I mean just for surviving March break, you deserve it. 🙂
I can’t wait to see the new book. It’s always so cool when I see your books on the shelving cart at the library. I think, “Yay, this has been checked out again.”
yeah, where IS the yarn boy?
That’s ok – we’ll blow your horn for you. Dude – great job.
And by the way, society? We don’t really care what they think. We like you. That’s all that really matters.
I just checked Amazon – my copy hasn’t shipped yet. I’ll be waiting…
Yee-haw! The new bookbookbook!
Be humble all you like. But at least do a few little secret dances around the house, won’t you? 😉
I pre-order your new book months ago, delivery estimate: March 13, 2006 – March 15, 2006 – will it be there when I get home?
Congratulations!
Congrats Stephanie! I can’t wait to get my hands on the new book. I hear what you’re saying about being proud and humble at the same time. I think it’s a Canadian thing in large part. But what a shame we almost have to be reconditioned to tell people we’re proud of the work we do.
I think your humble nature makes us all the more proud of you. Don’t stop now! You’ve really got something going.
Congrats! The Ides of March are a great day for celebration (at least in my world anyway.)
Good things come to those who deserve them but life happens, too. You write books that make us laugh and bring us together as knitters. That deserves respect and a good pat on the back. Way to go grrl! That is one awesome 365 days!!
Eee! Can’t wait till my store gets it. We (the staff) may, um, have plans to buy at least half of the copies we receive on the first day so they have to send us lots more. Heee.
Stephanie, The most admirable thing about this book–granted I haven’t seen it yet but can’t wait–is your humility in the face of it. You’ve made many sacrifices along the way, and deserve every success. Congratulations.
I’m so excited! I can’t wait to buy and read the new book. I gave one of the other books (can’t remember which) to a new knitter that I recently “created”. She took to knitting like a fish to water, and I was so embarrased to learn the crappy practice acrylic I gave her to make a learning swatch ended up being her first “scarf”. We quickly went to the LYS and bought some real yarn. I’m definitely going to be buying a copy for her to enable…er…I mean encourage her obsession, as you do that so well. =)
Thanks!
Congratulations! I’m very excited about reading your new book! This time, though, I’m going to avoid taking it as my “subway reading” because your other books turned me into “that crazy subway lady who’s laughing out loud to herself.” And it’s so hard to explain to non-knitters what you’re laughing about!
Yay bookbookbook3!
Congrats Stephanie! Accept the blessings that life has given you and revel in them. Lord knows that enough not-so-good stuff happens to us all at different times in our lives, so do enjoy the blessings (including seeing your name on the cover of bookbookbook!)
Take credit where credit is due – three books in one year is an incredible accomplishment (never mind a complete sweater in two weeks). I want to know, however, where are the exciting socks on your feet?!
Come to Ottawa for the tour, please!
Where’s the yarn boy? 3 books in a year? I just might have to buy them.
I’m wounded. Far from feeling the yarn should cover your glorious (though, as Rosa austutely points out, sadly yarnboyless) book, I think your book should be the apex of a glorioux gansy-yarn pyramid, temple, ziggurat. I’m sure there’s enough by now. So much that I’m approaching the moment where I quit nagging about spinning and start nagging about casting on.
But not today. Today’s for basking, today’s for gloating — girl’s got a BOOK. Damn. That IS something.
I too wondered where Yarn Boy was. *sigh*
I have the book on order. I stumbled on bookbookbook 1 and 2. They are fabulous. I try to explain the books to people and just break down and read a section to show what I am trying to tell. Even non-knitters understand and enjoy.
As I was told many times when I worked at a church: “he who tooteth not his own horn–the same shall not be tooteth.” It is alright to say “I did this and it is great.” Writing and telling stores is a wonderful gift to add to all the rest that you do so well.
Thanks for bringing all of us along for the ride!
I, for one, can’t wait to read it! Thank you!… and what happened to your ball boy? Just let the yarn hit the floor, did he?
hooray! i just finished the second book and am eagerly awaiting this one’s arrrival in our local independent bookstore.
please oh please come to vermont on your book tour…i’m campaigning heavily for you and also for kay and ann of mason dixon to come to our parts on their book tour. the local bookstore won’t know what hit ’em!
cheers!
And I actually meant to say “Yay,” and “Congratulations” before as well.
congrats! I can’t wait to read the new book. 🙂 I must say, I thought the idea of a knitting book devoid of patterns, instructions, and such was a strange concept – until I actually picked up your first book! it had me laughing out loud in borders and not feeling the slightest bit embarrassed either. 🙂 thanks for all the entertainment – in both book and blog form.
Yay, congrats on bookbookbook 3!
Please be sure to come to northern California on your book tour! I missed your previous visit but I’ll be there this time, come hell or high water!
I have had the great pleasure of hanging around for this ride of yours. You have inspired, tickled and moved many people with your words. I can’t think of many who are more – yes! I’ll say it! – deserving of success. Here’s to many more.
If I’m not knitting the next best thing is reading about it. I loved your other two books and can’t wait to read this one. Keep on writing!
I admire your courage to do what you really want and your ability to actually put “pen to paper.” It is all I can do to write this simple email at times. Congradulations again, cecilia
Hurrah – something to demand (oops, ask for) for my birthday next week!! CONGRATULATIONS Steph! It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it. Can’t wait to see if you’ll be out this way on the tour (just north of Toronto’s GTA).
You deserve all the celebrations you can have!! Congratulations! And where can we get a Yarn Boy? (I mean, without writing three books and all that other stuff…) Oh.
You have found your purpose, and there is so much power, and good, in that. Yes, of course you are grateful (the good people always are) and it’s only natural to feel guilty and to wait for the other shoe….but enjoy the ride! Heck, if you don’t enjoy your life, who will? And you are giving joy, and knitting, to so many. The Universe taps the right souls, it seems to me. Congratulations!
oooo, thank you I can’t wait. I’ve thouroughly enjoyed both your other books and blog.
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who does a breath check on my teen-girl.
I promise to yell, “Look! A book with Your name on it” if you bring it with you to the SnB tonight! My wee boy is so excited about meeting my ‘knitting club friends’ this evening he told me he’s gonna wear his tie. There may even be a haircut happening today.
Many, many congratulations, Dearheart. I cannot think of many more worthy of having wonderful things come their way, and you should be very proud of all the hard work you’ve done to make that happen. A toast to you!
p.s. I’m using your sock recipe being in there as an excuse to buy Trekking tonight. Just so I’m ready.
oooo, thank you I can’t wait. I’ve thouroughly enjoyed both your other books and blog.
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who does a breath check on my teen-girl.
Huge congrats Steph. You deserve every bit of good fortune that you have received. I hope to see you at the SnB tonight so we can celebrate (bring Hank, he will fit right in!)
“I have never been very successful in the ways that society measures it.”
Ah, bollocks to society’s measure of success! You’re happy with what you do every day. That’s something I’m working hard towards now, something I’ve come to realise is a lot more important to me than how much I earn or the car I drive. After all, it’s something money can’t buy.
You’re successful, I’d say 🙂
Part of what’s fun about reading your work and seeing your tour is that your vibrant, engaging personality is as big and open as it always was. You still seem like a *real person* who doesn’t turn up her nose when buttonholed by admirers; you haven’t closed up your life the more we want to know; you haven’t changed the things you value. (You know, like if Mr. Washy breaking two years ago were suddenly on the same scale as “my laundress machine-washed my handmade sweater.”) Maybe we all feel prouder for you to kind of fill up the acclamation bank–if you were self-congratulatory, there’d be less of it coming back from the universe?
I dunno. You’re like the knitting Annie Lamott.
Nice handspun!
Yay! The Book really exists! Now all I need is for Amazon to get their excrement accumulated and send me the copy I preordered eons ago!
Thanks so much for the giggles, belly-laughs and (occasional) sniffles you provide with your tales of the knitterly life.
You go ahead and (humbly) stand over there while I’m over here doing a happy happy dance.
(Dancing, dancing, dancing . . .)
Can’t wait to get my hands on this one!
(Still dancing . . . la, la, la, la, la, la, la.)
Congratulations! Do not pooh-pooh your talent, or your well-deserved success. It is good, hard, work to do what you are doing (even if you love it).
Congratulations. Here’s hoping the confluence of good luck and enormous talent continues to make you deservedly successful, in the visible ways. You’re too humble to say it’s all you, but I agree–women, knitters, moms…I’m all in favor of a little bit of curtain calling. And you, my dear…it couldn’t happen to a better person.
Can’t wait to see the book in person.
yay!! can’t wait. must get you to come to the central coast for a signing. come to california…come to california…come to california…for there is much yarn and excellent weather and so many books to sign!!
congrats and i’ll be buying it at my LYS (which i support so they can bring you to california). hint hint
Someone else said it already “I can’t read a pattern book in bed” I need to read you books as I certainly enjoy your blog.
bookBookbookBook 3!
OMG OMG OMG
DES MOINES – that’s in IOWA, please please please…
It looks so cool and shiny, like a REAL KNITTING BOOK. Hurrah! Obviously, you’ve put out some good energy and it’s coming back. And you keep putting it out. Thanks for that!
Stephanie, much of the concern with this fab new book seems to be the absence of a hot dude holding yarn… just something to consider for the next one, maybe shirtless and holding yarn? It’d probably be on top of the bestseller lists for years. Congratulations on the book, I’ll be putting it on my wish list right now!!
Go ahead .. throw yourself the party! You deserve it!
Can’t wait to see you when your tour hits Portland, Oregon!!! 🙂
Congratulations on #3! The hardest thing to accept in life–okay, the second-hardest, right after “I have no control over any of this”–is that we don’t always get what we deserve or deserve what we get.
I can’t wait to pick up my own copy.
Congratulations, Stephanie.
I can think of no other contemporary writer who deserves success more. Honest.
I’ll take your books over the – what’s the name- Da Vinci Code anytime and I will be in book store for the new one.
Diaries of Geisha? Phaaa, I would rather be knitting and reading your book at bedtime.
Kite Runner? Ridiculous. What a waste of time.
You have a huge audience because we love your humor, you disarm us with your humility and we share your passion for knitting. Enjoy your success. Time to pop the cork. vj.
Though there is some truth to the notion that success has something to do with luck and timing, it also has to do with having the smarts, talent and courage to take advantage of the luck and timing. You are completely responsible for the smarts, talent and courage. ‘Tis a very big deal.
I’d be blowing a tuba, were I you. I’ve been saving my B&N gift certificate just for this book.
PS I’d like to borrow Hank. He looks awful cute with the book.
Congratulations…I am reading book 2 and know when I hit a knitting snag or just need a good laugh that it will do the job. Being humble is rare in today’s world and VERY refreshing..it is why so many of us read your blog regularly and why we buy your books.–Suzanne
Congrats!! It’s the Canadian in you telling you not to be boastful (as a Canadian, I suffer from this in my career also) and it’s your amazingly diverse audience demanding a little more “look a me” and less circumspect-ness. 🙂
I bought your first 2 books and ordered the 3rd from Amazon purely on the strength of your writing in your Blog. Loved the first two and can’t wait for the new one. Congratulations from a fan in Ireland!
Happiness is a new Yarnharlot book! REal happiness would be a book tour visit to Eastern Ontario-specifically Belleville/Trenton/Kingston area. We need you!!!!
As far as we are concerned you are Bon Jovi, Madame Curie* and Brad Pitt, all rolled into one (an interesting concept in itself). You rule! Congrats!
I will be purchasing several copies of your newest oeuvre as soon as it appears at Willow. Anything to keep Anxious Dave happy.
And for heaven’s sake, for however long or short your 15 minutes may be, ENJOY YOURSELF.
*You should have a unit of yarn named after you.
Can’t wait to read it! 🙂
It will be in stores next week, but I am in Ontario now (that sounds a little more whiny then I intended). I am going back to NJ next Wednesday, hopefully to finally defend my thesis. How am I to get the book, find you at Lettuce Knits and get at least three autographed copies if the book is not available.
Are you going to go to Maryland SW this year?
Oh and I finally gave into blog pressure and started my own blog. Since I decided that living in two countries, buying a house and finishing a thesis weren’t enough on my plate.
Teresa
Congratulations! I’ll be standing by the mailbox until mine arrives. 🙂
Congratulations! It must be so exciting to actually hold the book in your hands. And hoorah for you and other women who have the courage to try to make a living doing what they really love. Can’t wait to read the book!
Well done! I wonder if I can find it in England. I’ll keep my eyes open!
Steph: from someone else who works hard to leave a small footprint on the world, and who knows that her children are very, very strange – thank you. Thank you for believing in yourself and in the knitting community around you. What does it matter if your wardrobe is not from (insert favourite overpriced store/designer here) if you’re (largely) content with the way your universe is unfolding?
Heading to LettuceKnit tomorrow on Toronto fieldtrip (my 1 day March break, as boys will be at sitter, and mom/teacher will go play) – any chance the book will be there?
I know what you mean!! I just got my copy of my first book the other day.. now mind you .. I had to actually BUY mine.. and then found a mistake.. (there’s not mine.just for the record.) and it was sort of.. anti climatic.. (sp?) you know.. though it’s really rather cool.. and it’s helpful and all .. despite the mistake…
cheers!
(and thanks for commenting.. that WAS the highlight of the day!)
Congratulations! I guess you don’t need to beware the Ides of March as they seem to be kind to you. Most of the books I read fall into unique genre categories- knitting and quilting murder mysteries, a caterer who solves crime, crimes in the Navaho nation, a cat and dog team who solve crime…hmmm, that’s a lot of murder and mayhem. See why I need your books Steph? I need balance and humor, and I understand knitting, and wonky gauge swatches, and ravenous teenagers who sleep like the dead, and explaining why even tho I have many huge bins of yarn I still have to order this particular yarn ’cause the other stuff isn’t quite right. I like the final book cover better than the previous one, and if you make a life size cardboard cut-out of Hank holding your book (like in the photo) to use as a display stand even non-knitters won’t be able to resist buying the book!
You are an awesome writer with great humour and equally great humility. You make me laugh . . . all the time.
Timing. You got to write like that by a combination of luck and timing.
Uh-huh… right. Whatever. I don’t care what your theory is, just keep writing, girlfriend, and I’ll keep buying, reading, laughing, and crying about the way you show me the world.
Congrats, and may you be mothfree forever.
Darling, you are just sweetly and classicly Canadian. No downer on any other nation (what does she have against Burkina Faso, anyways?), but we seem to have a culture that reveres the amateur over the professional (how crass, those professionals!)
However, I do think that three books doth a professional writer make. Time to step up to the plate and AT LEAST give BookBookBook-1 some company on the sidebar. And be really daring: move them a little higher up the page.
Cripes, did you say NEXT WEEK??????
Today has been a hard day for me (long story). I read your post and cried with joy for you. I cannot wait to read bookbookbook.
🙂
You have most gentle gracious spirit, Stephanie. Good karma can’t help but surround you!
Congratulations on holding another of your wonderful books in your own warm hand.
Yay! Congratulations on bookbookbook III!! Anyone who reads your blog on a regular basis definitely knows what knitting prose and knitting humor are. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I had to go back and read all the archives just to catch up on what I’d missed before I discovered it.
I’ll definitely be picking up the new book… think the book tour will come to Austin, TX this time?
Wow, fantastic! Congratulations! I wish you loads of success.
I dunno, the clothes on the cover look pretty good 🙂
I suppose I need to stop giggling now about you in particular writing a chapter named “Gauge, swatches, and how to accept them”
Congratulations! I’m a big fan of your books and your blog. You sound like you have some Chinese in your background because (no offense intended) you sound just like my mother. I was always told that you don’t want to attract undue attention from the fates ;o) I say, toot your horn, you deserve it! I can hardly wait until you come to Vancouver.
Can’t wait for the book–I check Amazon almost everyday. As for the tour, please, please, please be coming somewhere near me! Great big congratulations, you deserve all the success!
Congratulations. I love the cover of the book, and can’t wait to see the inside.
Since you’re reflecting on a heck of a year, I feel compelled to note that it was about a year ago that I discovered your blog and was inspired to learn to knit. Thanks.
Girl, I am just so proud of you. Even though I don’t know you (well, I heard you talk once) and you don’t know me. You just make us all proud. All in one year. Yowza. Would you mind concentrating on world peace for this next year?
Now go celebrate – buy some yarn!
In my work (I manage an indie bookstore) I am ambushed by authors on an almost daily basis: “Do you have my book? Why don’t you have my book? I wrote a book and you don’t have it? What kind of a bookstore are you anyway?” I would give practically anything to have just one of them speak about their work as you just have. I would leap from behind the counter and hug them, and I would stock and read and recommend their books, as I will yours. Thank you, Stephanie (and sorry for the long comment).
Congrats! But I’m not sure I’ll ever swatch, no matter what that chapter says.
As for the tour, I have it on good authority (a poster in the library) that you will be in St. Louis on April 26th. My 6yo is dying to meet you, since you both knit and are both named Stephanie. She has announced that we are free to refer to her as “Stephie” that evening so there will be no confusion as to which of you is who. I replied that yes, people would be bummed out it they drove 100 miles to see you and ended up having the wrong Stephanie autograph their book, but hopefully people realize you (Yarn Harlot) have glasses and curly hair.
Can you request that you go to Utah? Can *I* request that you come to Utah? There are a lot of us here that would love to meet you!
I am just about crying with pride that your picture is on the cover of this book. You are an author. And I love you. And I think you like me too. This is happiness.
🙂
I have been thinking about the world TOLERANCE all day since I read your comment this morning (by the way, you leave comments at 1:51 am?????!!!!) I love that you can plant a word and have it grow. Love that.
Am I loving too much here?
xo
Stephanie, I am so happy for you! I can’t wait until the new book comes out. And I know I speak for a lot of people when I say I hope you make it out to Arizona for the tour. August and September will suck, but April is really nice. Way to go!!
Three books in one year is a HUGE accomplishment, three good books in a year (which you are at least 2/3s of the way towards achieving) is close to a miracle.
Congratulations.
I read somewhere that something like 82% of North American adults think they could write a book, and I swear that that is the 82% that asks stupid questions at social gatherings. (I write odd genre books too so I get it.)
Good for you – when is the fourth one coming out?
Congratulations! I just pre-ordered 🙂
Please please please come to lovely Mystic, CT. There is a wonderful shop here – Mystic River Yarns; Norah Gaughan has been, Lily Chin has been TWICE – I’m sure they’d love to have you and plenty of people would come to see you! Heck, I drove nearly 2 hours to see you in Massachusetts and dragged two muggles with me – if I would do that, I’m sure others would do it to come here to a lovely – truly, in September? It’s freaking gorgeous here in New England… Can we entice you with a knitter friendly authentic Irish pub 5 blocks down the road, perhaps? Hmmmmm?
It warms my soul to know that somebody else reacted the same way I did when published. I didn’t tell anybody I was even writing, kept thinking they’ll come to their senses and realize they made a mistake.
When it finally arrived, I would only tell my husband. Three years later, the librarians are yelling at me for not telling them so that I could have done a book signing. Like I could ever have done that!
But you wrote exactly what I experienced. That’s what I get from you, the expression of my feelings that previously had no words.
Now have some wine and chocolate, and feel some bliss.
Stephanie, the fruits of your labors are SO COOL. I join everyone in dancing and hooting in celebration.
I think it is very common for women to not celebrate their own accomplishments. Common, and sad.
Cloth, Paper, Scissors (an excellent mag!) http://www.quiltingarts.com/cpsmag/cpshome.html invited us last year, well, *challenged* us, really, to make Brag Books. They suggested that it was healthy for us to recognize and celebrate our accomplishments, and invited us to put them down (on paper, fabric, what-have-you).
I have have been working on mine (distracted in part, aside from knitting, by making one for my dad’s 80th last year).
I think having something concrete to pick up, to look at and enjoy and remember that we have many important achievements, is an excellent thing, when we are feeling low and small and disregarded.
Your books accomplish the same thing — you can look at them, and have a quiet glow (if not a lunatic celebration 🙂 ) that YOU did it…….
I also join everyone in thanking you for enhancing our world. Your footsteps are light on the planet, and lighten our hearts as well.
Thank you.
Hey Steph? I’m here in part because last November, when I was learning to knit, I went looking for a book to enhance my new obsession. I found Confessions of a Yarn Harlot, and immediately had to buy it when, one chapter in, I was struck with helpless fits of giggles on the B&N floor. Imagine the looks of the people walking by when they saw me on the floor, laughing, in the knitting aisle. Now imagine my boyfriend finding me this way, and me, gasping for air, trying to explain that it’s about knitting, and it’s really, really funny. I didn’t understand a lot of what you were talking about at that point, ’cause I was new and all, but a few months later finds me still obsessed, half a country away from where I started, and picking up Meditations at the LYS because I needed bedtime reading. Now you tell me there’s one that actually has useful stuff too? And I can get it on amazon for ten dollars? Can I hug you?
Seriously, come through Boston if there’s a tour.
You are awesome! I’m sure I will love your third (fourth, fifth, etc.) book as much as I have the first two.
I can’t wait to get one!
Many, many congratulations. As far as I’m concerned, you are totally living The Dream.
I just wish bookbookbook3 was in stores now so I could snatch up my copy. I’m guessing it’ll be another week or so. I hate waiting.
Woot! Congratulations! I can hardly wait to get this newest book in a long series. But please, we better get Ken to put the second and third books on your sidebar already!
Please come to Indianapolis– please!
I have been stalking this book online and looking at the release date (amazon keeps saying March 1, 2006.) and looking at the calendar and becoming perplexed.
Yay Steph!!!!!!
Hank is a truly darling little boy. Congratulations on the third book, Mme. Harlot. I’ve loved the first two and I’m sure this one will be the best one yet!
Oh, how wonderful! If you won’t pat yourself on the back, we will! I’m breathlessly awaiting its arrival in my local bookstore …
And you know what? You’re a whole lot like me, except for the part about you being a successful author. I, too, put my family and spirit above material gain, and I’m not one bit regretful. Just remember, there are more of “us” in the world than you might think.
I ordered my book from Amazon in February. I’m waiting for shipment now. I check every day.
I can’t wait for the book to be at my LYS. Obviously this was the picture without your “yarn boy”! I also have trouble explaining about the blog I read (yours). I say “It’s a knitting blog, but this lady is really funny …”. This comment will show my age, but I finally figured out that I can tell people your blog and books are like Erma Bombeck – if she had written about knitting.
Congratulations on the book and fun with the cutie holding your book.
OHMIGAWD! Congratulations!
There you go, sneaking books past us again! Oh, I’m so happy for you, sweetheart!
And oh, yes, the new cover is much better! I think it’s because every time I see it, I’ll think: “…Yarn Boy!…” and snicker! (The old cover, I just thought, eh, she’s not *that* shy anymore, is she?)
Three books in one year~~how cool is that!?!?! How appropriate to hold your third in your hands exactly 365 days after the first. Thank goodness kids don’t come along that quickly :o)
Congrats! I loved your first two books and can’t wait to read this one!
Please come the the Atlanta GA area! We would love to have you come!
Congrats! 🙂
You are way too humble. Your writing and sense of humor are first rate!
Congratulations, Stephanie! I think you can quit looking over your shoulder now to see if the planet’s sneaking up on you…this IS where you belong! (And I can’t wait to read bookbookbook, though I may have to promise my husband not to read it in bed. Laughing too hard really makes the bed shake something awful.)
Well done Stephanie. You have made your dream happen.
Congratulations! You are an inspiration to all of us. 🙂
Hooray! Now starts the incessant “search” features of the Borders Bookstore computers! Please, please come to Eugene, OR on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday (my days off!). We have wool!
YEAH!!! Finally, some new good bedtime reading. When can we expect the next book??? You deserve all the kudos in the world, for keeping us knitters in stitches.
Congratulations! No Big Deal? This is a HUGE deal. Pat yourself on the back, do a little happy dance, wear a smug smile around for a day or two or a week even. Celebrate this. I know I’m going to by hopping over to Amazon and buying your book as soon as is humanly possible.
Also, since you will be on tour, can I put in a good word for Spokane, WA? Pretty please. It would be great if you came to my neck of the woods.
I’ve already pre-ordered this one. I’ve gotten my money’s worth from your first two. I’ve loaned each one to three different people and all of them said they enjoyed reading your books.
Wow! You not only wrote three books but you have them PUBLISHED which is a lot more than many writers can say. I loved the first two and can’t wait to get this newest one. However, my favorite piece of yours is the one you wrote for KnitLit2 about knitting while skating. I read it and laughed until I cried. I wanted to read it to everyone in the house and have them laugh with me but it was 2:00 am and they wouldn’t have appreciated being wakened for it. Keep writing. Keep enjoying. You deserve it.
Taking a chance to do what you love is an awesome undertaking. Sometimes the circumstances of our lives push us toward that love whether we want to go there or not. Enjoy your big “push”. (Yeah, you could see that in a giving birth sort of light.) Congrats.
Aig! I just bought bookbook and now there’s another one! =)
I want you to know, I laughed all through the first one, laughed a lot at the second (and cried a couple, too), and I surely will pick myself up a copy of this one 🙂
Congratulations – apparently the Ides of March is better for you than for, say, Caesar. You rock, and I can’t wait to read this one.
(I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind Sarah the Wonder Publicist that she promised that you would visit Arizona for more than just a layover this time.)
Again, congratulations. Enjoy the ride!
I’m so glad you decided to write. Your books, your stories, your humor inspire & delight me. Thank you. And take a few moments (or days, or weeks really) to enjoy the fact that you did something big, and huge. It probably seems a bit strange when you’re use to helping people bring life into the world, but these books are probably no less your children, birthed from your own brain like Athena carrying a wicked set of DPNs and using yarn and stitch markers like a slingshot.
Be proud! And knit on!
Outstanding! And congratulations. Timing and luck may play a role, but you’ve got the talent and skill it takes, too, so go ahead, be proud. And start releasing DVDs of your speeches!
Woo hoo! Congrats on number three! I’ve been meanin to let you know that I’m just about to finish up book number two and I’ve loved every word. Bravo! 🙂
Congratulations on the book!
I’m so glad you altered the cover to include a head. I think there are far too many headless bodies in knitting photography these days… it’s getting a little creepy.
Please come to ABQ!
Congratulations, Stephanie!!!! I can’t wait to read it, and to see you on your tour! Be proud, girl, you’ve done an amazing thing.
First of all, I talk about you and your books to my non-knitting friends all the time. They think the stories are funny and wonderful. But these people are so used to seeing me with knitting in my hands that they no longer think it’s a strange thing to do anywhere you are. They think I knit at red lights! How silly, right? Second of all, I’m SO GLAD your book is out! I’ve been holding up my Amazon order waiting for it. CAN’T WAIT TO GET IT! Write some more, will ya?
What do you mean you can’t discuss knitting humor at parties? I do it all the time….oh….is that why everyone suddenly has to go to the bathroom…..when..I…talk…to…them…at…parties..
Can’t wait to read it. Loved the first 2.
The planet won’t send you anywhere…you are right where you belong. Congratulations, and hope to get this book signed later.
Stephanie,
I totally understand the onus on particularly women not to blare your horn loudly…I think it’s given to some of us at a cellular level.
However, you are truly an inspiration. Not just for your writing some damn fine books, but for sharing your daily truths with us; making us laugh and cry and nod our heads in understanding of knitterly frustration.
So please enjoy your moment, ok? You really do deserve it.
And I’ll be really obnoxious and quote something that has always meant a lot to me:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?”
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of G*d.
You’re playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of G*d within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people the permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Nelson Mandela
So, a sincere thanks for the liberation, chica.
Congratulations! I can’t wait to read your latest book. Hey, don’t be too humble–you’re very talented. We women tend to put ourselves down when we’re successful. We say its just luck, or someone else did most of the work, or some such rubbish. Come on, stick out your chest and be proud. Enjoy the glory!
You just go on being your fabulous self. I was a serious reader & writer before I was a knitter, and as such, am very grateful for you, for I have found the prose in most knitlit books to be, well, not exactly my taste–but you rock. You’re basically living my dream life, which is inspiring and heartening to read about. I am at the top of a growing waitlist for your books at the library I work at, and once they come in (I’ll be pestering the acquisitions librarian to order the new one, too) I’ll be pressing them into the hands of the huge population of knitters among my colleagues and patrons. Most heartfelt congrats on the new book! (Cute kid holding it, too.)
Awesome! I can’t wait.
Stephanie-I absolutely do not believe in luck, good or bad. You worked hard and you are now gleaning from your efforts what you gave. Good for you! Blessings, Julie
Will Texas be involved in this tour? I’m looking forward to the next book simply because I loved the first two. Hooray for Harlot!
You’re gonna have to face us Southern folk sooner or later you know. Just sayin’.
go harlot!
That picture of Hank is priceless! I’m going to go check out your tour schedule. There’s no way my knitting group is going to miss you this time through!
I can’t wait for your third book….I’ve had it on order from Amazon for forever! Hurry, book, hurry. I can’t get enough Stephanie! Congratulations on your accomplishments. I love your blog and your gorgeous spinning and knitting!
You make a lot of people smile and in today’s world that’s a really big deal. Thank you.
Please come to Madison, WI on your book tour this time! Thanks.
Stephanie,
you are very prolific! all I really wanted to say is that I’m so glad you changed the book cover to keep your head. headless is just not right : )
congratulations!
btw, if you’d like to come farther south, we’d love to have you
Yum! Gonna order that one right now along with a book by the Dalai Lama. Gotta keep the gurus going.
OMG I am so excited for your book. I loved the other two and give them as gifts.
congrats steph! i totally get the “not bragging” thing … are you familiar with sarah ban breathnach? (simple abundance) i believe one of her essays deals with this stunning mostly-female phenomenon … you are brilliant, funny and loved by many – we want to share in your joy and benefit from your books so *thank you* for telling us! and hank is the perfect little spokesperson 😉
best, tara
Congrats on the newest book! Come to Oshawa centre Chapters PLEASE!!!!! I need to bow down before you!
well done, missy! well done!
Congratulations! I’ve had this pre-ordered for months and am so excited . . . for you, for publishing your THIRD book, and for me, because soon I’ll get the chance to read it!
Ahh… it’s here at last…
I have a galley of it so I could review it prior to your trip to St Louis!
It’s an awesome book!
Congratulations on the new book, Stephanie! It’s your measure of success, not society’s, that really counts.
This one really is bookbookbook (the others should now be known as book and bookbook)!
I can’t wait to read the third book. I love everything you write! Consider Charlotte, NC on your tour. We have some wonderful yarn shops here.
Dearest Harlot,
Here I was, trying desperately not to comment on your blog. I didn’t think that it would be fair to point out that I’m not dealing with 90 teenagers every day, and how relaxed that’s making me feel. I thought, perhaps it would be cruel to giggle and grin at your exploits with your own dear ones. But every day, like clockwork, I found myself reading.
Today, however, I see you have a bookbookbook III! Congratulations! And, better yet, a Bookbookbook III tour! So, I put my head together with my darling wife, and we’ve come up with a bribe…I mean incentive…for you to come see us in Ottawa (or at least to stop in at Yarn Forward again). See, we have this bottle of mead. OK, we have several, all homemade, but now we have one labelled “For when Stephanie comes to Ottawa”.
Sooooooo, how about it? It’s not screech, but it’s homemade, alcoholic, and tasty.
FANTASTICAL!!!! I’ve had the book on order for a long time now and I’m glad to hear that it is SOON going to be in my hands. I’ve read and re read the other two and enjoyed them both. Can Hanks eyes get any bigger ? Lucky him has your bookbookbook. Take all the bows Steph you deserve them . Hope I can get to see you when you are on tour and get you to autograph them.Better rest up your fingers for said task as I’m sure there will be LOTS of us wanting the same thing from you .Take care, enjoy being at home for now. THANKS for the books and this blog . The girls must be very proud of their Mom.The gansey wool is looking GOOD!
There is nothing to be timid about!! The only reason I found this website in the first place was from reading “Yarn Harlot” a few months ago!!
I’m a VERY beginning knitter and both “Yarn Harlot” and your website have given me incentive to keep going. After all, if YOU an get frustrated, then I’m not alone.
Congratulations on your new book. I just ordered it through Amazon.
Congratulations! Wishing you many more books!
You make me laugh so much! Thanks I usually need it.
Absolutely splendiforous of you!!! Bask away!!
Congratulations–I wish I could be at a party with you–I’d LOVE to hear all about all your books and talk yarn with you! (My family just doesn’t appreciate a good yarn story!)
Congrats Stephanie, I loved the first two and can’t wait to read the third. Hopefully one of your stops will be the east side of the GTA, somewhere in my area. Would be good to meet others with the same obsession, especially with the multiple projects issue….I drive my girlfriend who is also a knitter nuts with my MULTIPLE “on the go projects”. 😉 Looking after young kids it is the only way to go. Right project for the the right place!! Again congrats and wishing you ongoing future successes, you deserve it!! bets
isn’t it scary when we get what we want! Mazel Tov!!! Come to New Mexico on your next tour please… I’ll even skip school to show up!
Congrats, congrats, congrats!!! Sing it proud girlfriend – as we your readers are proud that there is someone out there who is not only as nuts as we are in the yarn department but is a bit crazier because she write about it and admits it freely! You’ve made us cool – and we love you for it!
Yay Stephanie!!! I’m so happy book 3 is finally out. Can’t wait to read it – I loved your first two and your blog. You deserve all the blessings you are lucky enough to have…and more! Hope this book is successful. Look forward to seeing you on tourf
I love your books and am glad that the 3rd one is coming out. Thank you for writing and thank you for helping me find a passion and relaxation.
I was planning on buying it anyway. But when I read that your sock recipe was in there, my heart jumped! I have your other two and love them lots. When I read through the first one, I was laughing out loud constantly. I kept looking around to see if anyone thought I was nuts. Yes, not only do I knit in public, I read stories about knitting in public.
Congratulations!
🙂
Congrats on the hat trick! And I’m officially stumping for a visit to Salt Lake City on the next tour!
I’m a new knitter..and LOVE your books. I love your style of writing and the way you tell your story. Congrats and keep ’em coming!
Hello! I’ve never commented on your blog before, but I read it all the time, absolutely love it, and have sent a few friends over to read it.
Many congratulations on your book! I can’t wait to get all three of them, and really hope you’ll come to a LYS near me.
RE: your earlier post — I once told my 16 y.o.son that I never felt like I had enough food in the house for him, because he would eat all of whatever amount there was — so what would the right amount be? His answer: “No amount that we’ve ever had.” I wasn’t sure whether to feel more or less guilty.
You are an amazing person and an inspiration to those of us who live extraordinary, ordinary lives…..who have good friends, good family and good yarn…..and can laugh out loud because you express everything we are so well. Thank you seems a small way to express our gratitude
Congrats on the new book!
I’ve got a short story that won a ‘contest’ and was printed along with several others in a book that was just put out this past week as well. I don’t get anything for it, but I knew that going into it. However, it was experience and practice and it put my work ‘out there’. I have to order it through Amazon as well, but I don’t think this book is available in stores.
Happy, Happy Dance For Book III! Congratulations! Your writing always brightens the day for me. I enjoy popping into your blog after a rough day at work for a quick pick me up. Hoping that your newest comes to the LYS soon as I’d rather buy it there than elsewhere. And if you don’t blow your own horn now and again, who else will?
Happy knitting!
Lana
Forget being humble I own and adore your first 2 books and cant wait to buy your third one, Its great to read your stories about life & knitting you are a great author. Congratulations 😉
Dearest Steph!
First of all congrats on the book. Cant wait to read it!
Second of all: If somebody deserves all this its you. You bring so much joy to people all around the world every day. You move so many people and move them into doing good, connecting with each other in a way they would have never thought of being possible. Trust me, you deserve this. Dont doubt yourself. Having read your blog for well over a year by now you brighten my day whenever I read it, you inspire me above and beyond anything I thought possible, both as a knitter and a person. Trust. Me. You. Deserve. This.
Bravo!! Wonderful news. I don’t believe in luck – you’ve worked hard for this and you deserve it. Enjoy the ride, you wacky knitter, you.
Re: the cover.
Nice pants.
(this is my best impression of a Canadian saying “Congratulations!”)
LOVE your first two books and am looking forward to this next installment! Congratulations for a job well done:D
Hurray for the new bookbookbook! Please, please, I’m putting a vote in for NYC – we really don’t bite, honest! You said you liked it here last time… Do you think you might be able to make it to Rhinebeck again? Hope hope?
Huge cheers, loud hooting, sounds of many hands clapping! Seeing your name in print is something sensational – and definately deserves celebration.
thanks for something wonderful to read through – I’m already sure it’ll be great!
Stephanie, people who read your blog love your writing. If you tell us you have a new book out there, think of it as doing us a FAVOR, not tooting your own horn. How wonderful for you to be doing what you love and to find out how many other people love it too. The first books were as fun as reading your blog daily, I’m sure this one will be too. Thanks for the heads up!
Sweetie, you deserve every wonderful thing you get, and then some. Now, I will begin haunting my post office until my copy shows up. And check w/ B & N, since I haven’t had an e-mail saying it was sent. hmmm. Will you be popping in at MD S & W?
Congrats to you-it has been a crazy 365 days indeed. You deserve what you have and so much more. It is called talent, and you’ve got it in spades.
But the Yarn Harlot unravels the mysteries of-did I read this right-*swatching*? Oh hell yeah, this I gotta read.
😉
Congratulations on the new book! I’m glad that it’ll finally be available soon. I sure hope that your book tour will include a stop in Denver. So, what’s next? Do you have an idea for your next book?
I’m gonna bust a gut for you then. Congratulations. That’s the best FO I’ve seen so far this year, dude.
I’m slightly overwhelmed by the swarm in your comments section, but I had to pop in and say I think this might be my favorite book of yours so far, though I’ve enjoyed them all. And I for one am glad that you can balance out writing three books with a prodigious amount of knitting; after all, you are almost wholly responsible for exposing me to the Latvian Mitten virus, for which I’m truly thankful.
congratulations Stephanie…. I’ll call you next week to arrange getting the writing books back from you, as I think you are well on your way now with that writting “thing” and probably don’t need them anymore…. This is just fabulous… any chances your going to write a doula book too? Because you did a fab job there too…
Hugs from the little guy too…
If you still are looking for some finnish knitting terms check out this blog:
http://lenealve.blogspot.com/
She updates with finnish lessons in pictures, mostly about knitting.
You rock. And that yarn…how can you not start knitting with that yarn?
Thought of you today…a half pound of black shetland arrived on my doorstep from Toronto (Robin Melanson sent it to me to thank me). All I could hear was your voice saying “told you so…”
It spins itself into laceweight. I’m enthralled.
AMazing WONDderFUL FABulOUS!!!!
YOU YOU YOU!!! :o)
I’m just so excited!
For YOU!
For ME!!!
*going to amazon to add you to my wish list*
um. AGAIN. :o)
Amazing Job and Honking Bravos and a pinch on the arm to satisfy the karma gods wherever they lurk.
Congratulations, Stephanie, on publishing your third book! May the Fates bless you with another wonderful year of book signings, royalty checks, and yarn, yarn, yarn.
It might be hard to explain because you invented the genre and other than you, not much has been published in it! Congratulations to one of my blogging and knitting inspirations.
I still can’t believe you haven’t made it to the Twin Cities (MN). Do you KNOW how many yarn stores we have here?! An unholy number. Over 20.
YIPPEE! another book! I preordered it awhile back…now I have to get your other two back from my mom. She has been hogging them for months.
If I were you I’d throw myself a little party every time a book I wrote came from the printers. Actually, probably a big party. With lots of wine.
I am soooo excited to see that your new book is done and ready for me to buy. I have been watching amazon like a crazy women, waiting for it. I love your writing. It’s real! I often laugh out loud while reading it. I have had so many of the same knitting experiances It let’s me know I’m not crazy or if I am, at least someone else is with me.
Dear Harlot. Come to California. I’ll cook. You can stay here. We have a coffee shop and you can talk to..well, me for starters. I can find great hordes of coffee swiggin’, yarn hoggin’ readers here. (We’ll name a high octane drink after you and won’t think you’re boastful in the least).
Congrats! Three books in one year is an amazing accomplishment! As far as the fates and luck, we make our own luck, it seems to me. Some people never take advantage because it’s too scary, and others jump right in with both feet and figure that things will work out. Happy for you that they have!
Brava, bravissima! You touch so many of us on so many levels, brave lady, and generally with such a keen sense of the absurd.
Many congratulations and felicitations!
YAY!! Another knitting book and Hank looks so proud… well what you can see of him:)
Stephanie – Congratulations on the new book! Can’t wait to read it. I adored Yarn Harlot – I’m sure there are more people than you know who appreciate knitting humour. I laughed so hard about purchasing the yarn for the afghan that I couldn’t read the passage out loud to anyone – as much as I wanted to share it! I’d go for the big party – or at least the big bottle of wine!! Well done. I do believe that if you do what you love, you will have success (which, of course, can be measured in many different ways!).
MEGA-CONGRATS!!!! 😀 We are so proud of you! Go Steph go! There is only one Yarn Harlot and she is well worth spending the money for yer book on. Can’t wait to see it in the stores! 😀
Please go to Minneapolis in April, between the 11th and the 23rd! I’ll be visiting my folks then. I’m sure you’ll never make it to Montana, so Mpls is my best bet. Congrats. mdp
Encore! Have you started on the next one yet? 😀
We’re taking a trip to Paris next weekend (can. not. wait.) and if I can pick it up in time this will be in my read-along bag. I’m sure I’ll love it. And I’m very proud of and for you, for all that we don’t know each other from Adam. I admit to living vicariously through you a bit; my own career as a world-renowned public speaker has yet to take off, probably for want of actually trying it, as you have. So good for you. /nodnodnod
And please keep in mind that while writing books may not make you any more special than the accountants or factory workers among us, you are, nonetheless, quite special. Even more special is that you know what it is that you *do*. So many people stumble through life never really discovering that, or never really owning it when they do … 🙁
Toot!!!! TOOT!!!! That’s me tooting your horn since you don’t like to. It’s definitely ok to pat yourself on the back for a job well done. CONGRATULATIONS. Go ahead, throw that party! I can’t wait to get the book.
Wendy
Seems I’m late to the aprty again. Congratulations, honey bun. You deserve all that’s coming your way.
We all think your genre is the best, don’t worry!
i can only get to your blog later at night and am always WAY down on the list, but still, i hope you see how many good wishes are coming your way from ohio!
i can’t wait til my copy of knitting rules arrives; it’s been on order for awhile and i am SO looking forward to it. many congratulations, stephanie!
Whew! Scrolling down all that way took some valuable knitting time. 🙂 Congratulations! Can’t wait to get it.
Congratulations on your third book! Wow, three in one year, eh? That’s fantastic. Enjoy your success, you’ve earned it and we applaud it.
Another book tour… means another opportunity to meet you and stumble and not know what to say. 🙂 Maybe I’ll prepare something this time.
Can’t wait to read it, congratulations! I’m sure it will be just as wonderful as the last two.
My copy is on order. Can’t wait to receive it, as I loved your first two! Great job, and congrats Steph!
Please, please, please come to MD Sheep and Wool to promote your book (which I have on pre-order at Amazon) I so regret that I missed you last year. Besides that place is a yarn orgy.
Man, can’t wait to get my hands on this third book. This time I will carry that book all over the Maryland Sheep Show and this time you will get to autograph it!! Can’t wait to see you again.
Nancy
Woooooooooot!!!!!!!
How wonderful for you! You express very eloquently the sense so many women feel that they are not ‘entitled’ to whatever good fortune they have. But, Stephanie, you have contributed immeasurably to the community of women, of knitters and the world’s awareness of the power of both – just a bunch of chicks with sticks and string – to effect positive change in our world. And no one, trust me on this, NO ONE will ever forget the immense pleasure they have had when they met you. I hope you come to LA again!
Congratulations on bookbookbook#3. I can’t wait to get my paws on this one. Now that you’ve written a trilogy, when does the movie come out? And who stars as you?
If I knit something beautiful with Fleece Artist yarn and offer it as a sacrifice to the knitting gods, do you think it would please them and that they in turn would whisper things into the ears of your book tour manager while she slept at night… things that would perhaps encourage her to send you to the East Coast of the country you love so dearly? Even as far as Halifax?
I am not holding my breath, but I will cross my needles.
(I was going to burn the Fleece Artist as a sacrifice, but it just seemed so contrary to the spirit of the knitting gods.)
Squeeeeee!
Has it only been a year? I can’t beleive it’s only been a year since your first book came out. Look how much you’ve accomplished. Wow.
Congratulations. While I won’t argue that timing and fortune are wonderful things and that you got your share – they wouldn’t have been enough if you didn’t have the goods. And you do, in spades.
Thanks for sharing your gifts in your books and on your blog.
You are what I consider outstandingly successful in a way that is not easy for most to achieve. You have managed to live life on your terms while doing something useful that satisfies you. Not to mention raising three amazing daughters (c’mon – I can tell how button busting proud you are of them even with the “complaints”). Not to mention bringing a smile to our faces. I can’t wait to get your new book.
Is that a scar on Hank’s eyebrow? I don’t remember an eyebrow injury . . . Hey! What’s that he’s holding??!!
I think it’s absolutely lovely that you’ve been getting to do what you want. I don’t believe in the rebound effect.
Steph,
The best part about your writing, besides the fact that it makes me laugh out loud, is the fact that it helps me to accept myself as I am, with all my imperfections. Thank you for that. Can’t wait to read this new one!
Ang
congratulations from eastern canada too. Maybe out here we will get third time lucky and your tour this time will include atlantic canada?
Just this evening I was in a local independant bookstore and they looked up your new book up on the computer system and it was still listed as not yet published.
congrats stephanie! i’m glad you decided to add your head to the cover…
How exciting! Congratulations to you and may we get many more. I preordered mine so hope to get it soon. Very best of luck with it
3 books in one year! If anyone needs to toot their own horn it’s you! You have made knitting so much more fun to me. I hope that the rest of this year proves to be as wonderful as the last for you. One question though, do books (YOUR books) bought with stash money still count as stash?:) Just wondering… 🙂
BOOOK!!! Its beautiful! I want it! 🙂 (yes, my inner 3 year old is coming out)
Congratulations!
Still don’t know how you do this three-books-in-one-year thing. Is there some kind of HumorMaster 2000 machine that you crank up?
You’re a wonder, I tell you, right up there with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. OK maybe not so dangly.
So delighted for you, and for us who get to slurp up your writing!
xoxoxoxoxoxx
wow! Congrats! I really need to get hold of some of your books…wonder if I can get them in Germany…or at least through Amazon.de, although I’m in Thailand at the moment. We’ll see…
Congratulations!
Congratulations!! I can’t wait to get my copy!
I adore reading your humorous twist on all that is knit! Keep up the great work. Really.
Ahem.
Stephanie Rules!
Yay! Another book by you that my mom will buy for me! Woo-hoo! Well done you. And I like the cover photo.
Dear Stephanie
I bought the first two books and i am still laughing out loud.. Kept saying to my fellow colleagues in Toronto that they should hear my big fat laugh all the way from Montreal. Now i know you guys are lucky – and very close to Lettuce Knit – can’t believe i went there between two TO meetings – with my suitcase and all !!! So most of you guys live in La Ville Reine – however what about touring Montreal ??? i know of a charming little LYS where you can come to… or at Chapters/Indigo downtown.
And Steph – you have a witty sense of humour – WE ARE LUCKY that you decide to write about our beloved hobby and our obsession with yarn in such a way.. Plus all those fantastic and crazy ideas you share with us i.e.: Knitting Olympics, TSF, etc… It all brings us together in a silly way – ways that only us knitters can understand the scope of it all… WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES !!!
Three in one year is amazing accomplishment. The cover shows you off to be a lovely, slender, sophisticated knitter. Imagine! Give yourself a pat on the back, credit where it is due. Congrats!
Maybe Juti ordering your book while ordering a book by the Dalai Lama at the same time will even things out with the fates? Ditto on coming to GA! Anne Modesitt came, so you can come TOO! I live as far as southeast as you can get (without getting wet) from Atlanta, but I’ll drive to Atlanta to see you. I was actually planning on making a caravan in April to see you at Knit Happens! in April, until I realized your Harlot on Tour schedule was for 2005. This finally made me understand that this is 2 0 0 6. My knitting group is very mad at me now, as I berated them all into making the trek to Virginia *with* me. Maybe if you come to Atlanta, they’ll forgive me?
Congratulations!! It is so very nice to have access to a group of people that share not only my love for knitting but my clearly off-beat sense of humor. Thanks for bringing us together.
Just a quick WHOOOOO! Yay book! Yay Steph!
Stephie’s got the needles
She knitting to the beat
Harlot of the Yarn
Her blog is really neat!
CONGRATULATIONS on your new book…. you sneaky thing I didn’t know it was coming. How exciting! I’m proud to live in your knitty city.
Yay! Hoo-rah for book book book-that’s three books for book the third!
Actually Stephanie, this IS a big deal.
Three books in one year. Over $100,000 collected for TSF (and who cares if that is Canadian or US $; it’s HUGE either way). More than 4,000 Olympic knitters. Newborn snowdrop shawls. A newphew who knows how to use a ball winder. Persistent, if not fast, Gansey spinning. Weekly conquerings of Mr. Washie. Almost daily FREE entertainment for your large, devoted group of blog readers.
I would say that by any measure, you are a HUGE success!
Ratty clothes? You looked fine when I met you in Tacoma, WA last month.
Heartfelt congratulations.
You look great, so obviously the Yarn Boy did a superb job! Congrats!
Wow Stephanie, you are an amazing woman. You really don’t need to be so humble you know 🙂
Well done – there are lots of us who get knitting humour!!
Looks soooo good! Congratulations!
All I know, is I want YOU at my shop. It’s time that you see California’s capital of Sacramento. I don’t think you went north of Oakland, last trip.
Maybe your people can call my people. ;o)
Congratulations on a job well done!!!

What is it about Hank’s shirt that is so great for 5 year old boys? My son has one and so does a classmate. Congratulations on your third published book! Being who you are is best–now how do I tell my daughter?
Good job. I can’t wait to get my own copy!
HI, I’m a high school English teacher in California. I know fabulous writing when I see it; and Stephanie, you’re a fabulous writer. Can’t wait to buy all of your books!
I’m new to your blog, but the positve and empathetic tone makes me feel as if everyone’s friends here. That’s another sign of your talent! Best wishes 🙂
CONGRATULATIONS STEPHANIE!!! Be proud, seriously. You’ve earned it. 🙂 Are you coming to MD Sheep & Wool?
Love “Knits End”. Not many knitting books I can read and laugh out loud! Can’t wait until the others get over here (Oz)
Like HECK it’s all a big, cosmic mistake you are where you are!
It’s talent, and compassion, and wit, and hard work, and a whole lot of other things that have you in this wonderful position. You have the gift of connecting with people (even non-knitters) and that is a rare and special thing.
Do not think even for one minute that you don’t deserve every nice thing that comes along. I know that you and your family have sacrificed to provide us with a bit of knowledge or a funny story just when we need it most.
And what about KWB? You didn’t think that the good karma you sent out into the world with that would be ignored , did you?
I know you’d be giving this same speech to your daughters if they had tried to tell you they didn’t deserve the good things they earned, wouldn’t you? Try to read this post in the same scolding “Mom” type voice. It loses something in the translation otherwise.
Love you, keep up the good work!
Can’t wait for the new book to hit my local bookstore.
I think it’s a Canadian thing – the not drawing attention to yourself. Remember what Clara Hughes said when she won the gold medal at the “other” Olympics?: “This is what I do. And I should not be afraid to be the best in the world.”
Stephanie, knitting and writing and blogging and living your life is what you do best. Don’t ever apologize for being yourself and stop putting yourself down.
Congratulations on your third book! Love the way you write your blogentries. Have to get one of your books soon.
Steph–
Way to go, babe. You are awesome. When I discovered the first book I nearly cried with relief that someone else was so obsessed with fiber and knitting, and STILL saw the oddness of it all, and also could state it all so clearly. Book two was full of anecdotes I’ve told to others as if they happened to a friend of mine, Though I’ve met you a couple of times at book readings and fiber festivals, I know I’m just one of your millions of fans, and have never really had a conversation with you. But I want you to know how you have really moved me, helped me understand how knitting is part of me and what I do in the world. You’ve inspired me, motivated me, and amused me. And also introduced me to the wider knitting blogosphere, where I find lots of joy and amusement (not all of it kind… have you seen youknitwhat.blogspot.com?)
Anyway, your reticence is part of your charm, so let us all sing your praises, if you don’t want to do it for yourself. You go.
Dude, I wish you would stop calling my home a “crappy basement apartment”. It’s the “lower suite”. (By calling it that they can charge $200 more in rent.)
And congratulations on your book and your success. You deserve it, babycakes.
I do think what you have achieved so far is awesome! You’re such an inspiration! 🙂
Congratulations, Stephanie!!
Can’t wait to see the new book!
So, can we order the book directly from you? Will you have a button on your website to order the book using Paypal? I’d rather buy it from you full price than order from Amazon and get it autographed.
Will you start taking pre orders?
Will you come back to Arcadia Knitting? Now I know where to find it.
Robbi
A party in your honor would not be unmerited.
Congratulations on your third book, and thanks for all the knitting humor. I most certainly enjoy it…but I’m not sure three books is enough to make up for the pain caused by the sight of a cut sweater. Do demands for more sound greedy or stalkerish?
How does it feel to be a celebrity in a culture of obsessive oddballs…um, I mean, ‘dedicated fiber artists’? Do you get worried knowing there are people out there aspiring to be you? Not that I’m implying anything about myself…no, not at all…
Well done! If you ever happen to be in London, UK, drop me a line and I’ll take you to my favourite yarn shop (I’m aware that your upcoming tour might not stretch quite far enough for this). Nota bene, we’ve got pretty amazing wooly yarns here – well worth a visist :0) I’m looking forward to your new book.

When are you coming to Germany to sign??? 🙂
I’ll host, I promise!
Congratulations, Stephanie.
Congratulations! I can’t wait for it to arrive here!
Congratulations on the third book! I can’t wait unitl this book comes out. Your last two had me in stitches (no pun intended).
Oh wow! Congratulations and you should be proud! You are a wonderful writer and have earned the right to talk it up. I had never had any interest in books that just talked about knitting until I came upon your second book while I was organizing the knitting section at work (I work at a Barnes & Noble). I figured if I was going to read a book about knititng, it was going to be a pattern book, I mean why waste my time just reading about someone else knitting when I could be knitting myself. Well, my break rolled around at work and I accidently carried Yarn Harlot into the back with me, so I figured “why not?” I am so glad I did! I was laughing my head off and getting weird stares from co-employees. I bought the book that same day and then checked out your blog as soon as I got home. I can’t wait for the next book! Thank you so much for what you do, it never fails to inspire me.
Very excellent Oscar, I mean book acceptance speech.
Yay Stephanie! I have your other two books and the knitlit3 book and just love to hear you speak…in fact you have signed all my books and that makes them even more special for me. I’m planning to meet you out on your tour in April in MA and hopefully have you sign this one too!
Most of the time, trying to make your dream happen is a huge leap of faith and I applaud you for being strong enough to go for it. I’m so happy it has worked for you. You are an inspiration! Congratulations!
congratulations! 😀 must be such a thrill to get that in the mail 🙂
I appreciate being torn between staying humble & quiet, and excercising full bragging rights… I recently got a painting framed to go into a very public display,, and I’m giddy with pride, but afraid if I’m TO happy, someone will take it down 😛
I just bought your At Knit’s End book and loved it…on at least half the pages I was nodding and saying “uh huh…yeah…that’s me” You might find it interesting to know that it was at the Sacred Path bookstore attached to Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, and shelved in the women’s spirituality/meditations section. Now I’ll have to go back and see if they have this one. And if not, go to other bookstores. Many others, if necessary. (You and yarn shops, me and bookstores. 🙂
Oh Steph! That’s wonderful! Don’t you love it when photographers work to your benefit and make you look a good 6 to 8 inches taller? I like the new cover art much better, too…:) Hopefully you’ll make it to Ottawa on tourtourtour. Congratulations!!
I’m very impressed – 3 books published in a year with 3 teenage girls in the house?? WOW.
Silly question, perhaps, but when are you coming to Sweden? A European leg of your forthcoming tour would me much appriciated, I think.
I have bought (and read) At Knit’s End, and I loved it! I will definitely buy your other books as well!
Way to go…you should be proud!!! You are marching to your own drummer and keeping pretty good time doing it. The scary thing is that there are many, many of us who can hear the same drummer. Thank you for articulating what we feel about our knitting so well.
Stephanie!! – T’is a Gift, AND an act of Courage, to be able to spread Fun and Friendship, Joy and Inspiration thru out The Land with your storytelling. Truly you have been born with the gift of The Bard. Thru blog & book *THANK YOU* for Courageously sharing YOU with all of US. The Planet has already sent you there — YOU have arrived !!! —–*ENJOY*—–!!!!!!!
I’m actually right there with you – I don’t entirely know the balance of talking about it vs not – self promotion always seems so annoying to me. But, for what it’s worth, you do just the right amount, I think…
Looking forward to seeing this on the shelf… and of course buying it. Maybe yours can make friends with mine…. 🙂
Your books have freed me (and probably others!) to enjoy and express our feelings and ideas about a hobby that is often seen as old-fashioned and dowdy. I no longer apologize to anyone for the time I spend with my needles and yarn. Your books (and a severe back problem that limits my ability to do things around the house, mixed blessing?) have allowed me a new enjoyment and insight to an almost life long hobby. Thank you for what you are doing for the knitters of the world!
And when you come to Sweden (there is no doubt about it, is there?), could you please come to Finland, too ! I bought your first book when I was visiting Boulder, CO, and I actually gave it to my brother after reading it. My brother works for a publishing company and he was interested to see if your book could be translated and published in Finland (as you maybe noticed a couple of days ago, we have got lots of knitting fanatics here…).
Wow. You go girl. Your books are a great insight and help many of us realize we are not ‘Alone’! Thank you for taking the plunge, you’ve found your niche, whether you can talk about it at parties or not. 🙂
An avid fan!
Congrats on your new book, I would love be able to hear it on a CD, that way we could all continue to knit while listening to your wonderful thoughts. I am not sure if you go back and check comments from before, but I did leave you a nice one from the entry about the Bird hat. Jessica Dogers
Was wondering how the basement floor is? Just impressed you knit and do basements, both extremely useful.
Also, I think it all depends on the kind of parties you go to whether or not you can relate knitting humor, could also be the telling.
Third and last, Love the newest cover much better, cut off head reminds me of malfunctioning camera.
Congratulations! I’m looking forward to hearing you read from it and talk about it in person. 🙂
You’re so charmingly humble about your genius and wit. Thanks for something new to add to my Amazon wishlist.
Congratulations, Steph! It takes a certain amount of oompah to use timing and luck to one’s advantage. That is no small skill. I look forward to Amazon’s delivery and your word skills.
Bravo, Stephanie!
You may be as humble as you wish – I was absolutely DELIGHTED when you posted a comment to my blog – I felt as if I’d won the lottery! You tickle me, I live to read your blog daily, and I cannot wait to get my hands on this book! You deserve your success! The Meezer and I send our congratulations!!!
(Now, PLEASE don’t get writer’s block, ok??? I’m going to keep looking for more of this same genre, weird as it might be!!!)
(((hugs)))
After 296 comments, what is 297?
Well, this #297 wants you to know that there’s a big difference between shameless self-promotion and letting your faithful readers peek into your heart for a moment. From the comments I read, that’s what we all love about you: the very real and very funny Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. I know that *I* immediatly popped over to Amazon to look at covers, and I bet loads of others did too. We like you. Dontcha worry.
As a Librarian (in training) and a bookseller, I look forward to shamelessly promoting your book FOR you. That’s my job.
And just when do you think your tour will head over to Montreal ?
Can’t wait to see your newest book !
Congratulations !!!!
woot!!
How cool is it to see all these people begging you to come to their towns? Me, I’d be overwhelmed! Me? I’ll just politely mention that Kitchener holds this small little yarn get together in September….. but hey, just mentioning it, no pressure…..
Love the books Steph, keep it up, you’re feeding my habbit.
I’m glad they changed the cover so your head isn’t cut off. Next time you’re trying to explain your genre at a party, tell them, “You know how cream is just a small part of a pitcher of unhomogenized milk? Think of knitting books as the whole pitcher of milk and my sub-genre as the luxurious indulgence floating on the top.” And I mean that in the best way.
I’m late to the comment game- I read the entry a day late- but I wanted to say Congratulations! Seeing people on blogs publish things like this makes me realize that people who do things like this are real people.
Your “yarn stylist” did a great job with the ball of yarn on the cover 🙂 I was excited to see the picture I recognized from another blog entry.
And is there something about curly hair that makes you not want to cut it often? I get mine trimed about once a year and cut it off to really short as soon as I have 12 inches to donate. My straight haired sister gets hers trimmed once a month. That’s just crazy. You could use that money for yarn!
Just had to add my Too Cool! I’m so glad you are able to support yourself now with the writing. We need you in this manifestation, I just hope you never feel pulled too thin by your many fans. Daryl
Like so many others before, I’m going to say it: Huzzah! Huzzah! And again, Huzzah! Three published books in just one year is AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. A bit of giddiness could be warranted, even in the face of your impressive Canadian modesty. Go celebrate, you’ve earned it.
Now, to plan my trip to B&N and the purely-coincidental sock yarn spree at the nearby Rosie’s Yarn Cellar… (I’m sure they’ve already ordered the cookies and “bacon powdah” for your visit.)
I pre-ordered three copies a month ago and can’t wait to see it. Congratulations! Since I started knitting 14 months ago I haven’t read much except your books!
But, you post all the time about your book tour. So, perhaps the humble front isn’t all that genuine? It’s amazing to me how many people have such uncritical admiration.
Well done (we British don’t do effusive well!). I’m really looking forward to reading it, and I hope the book tour includes London (England).
*YaY* Grin. I’m so proud.
I totally understand what you’re saying. But I truly believe we should celebrate and mourn things from our hearts. I bet your heart is singing a loud song today!! Let it sing. You so deserve it.
You folks out there need to catch up – I pre-ordered my copy (you know, like the Harry Potter books) on Amazon weeks ago! Way to go Stephanie! And I think instead of pulling the fire alarm you should go into fine and enthusiastic detail about what you write, and have the fun pf watching someone’s eyes either glaze over with incomprehension (philistine) or light up with interest (enlightened eccentric.) You have every right to be proud – hell, you organized 4000-plus people around the globe with just a suggestion and knitted an insanely complicated Norwegian sweater in a week – I don’t think there’s anything you can’t do!
I’ve preordered the book on Amazon…as of about a month ago! I can’t wait to receive it. Write on! By the way, you share shelf space in my house with Anne Lamott and Catherine Newman–both of whom write funny books about parenting, writing, etc. These are IMPORTANT books! Keep it up!
I can’t wait for your tour! I had to miss your last visit to Winnipeg because I had to work. I’m booking the night off of work this time! My DH was sure that I was completely off my rocker when I was reading “Confessions”, I can’t wait to see what zingers you have in store this time. My HBC Booger, bookbookbook 1, 2, {and soon} 3, and a sock will be waiting {im}patiently for you.
Oh my goodness, Stephanie! Congratulations on the book!
I don’t know you. I’ve never met you. But I love you.
Rosane. 🙂
You seriously need to toot your own horn more. I have not read your books…yet. I only started knitting about 3 months ago, but I honestly have you to thank for part of my success.
After a couple of baby hats (not knitted in the round) and scarves, I really wanted to try socks. But I was scared. The knitting olympics made me order that sock kit and try. And guess what….I did well. I’ve since did more projects in the round, I’m not scared of dpns anymore, and I’ve learned to do more than I ever thought possible in such a short amount of time.
That is why, next week for my birthday, I will be requesting a copy of your new book. I need to take some time away from knitting and read.
Steph-That’s Great!!! We’ve been quite patiently waiting for the next one! You are such a wonderful writer!! My husband still thinks its weird that I’m laughing at loud while reading a “knitting book”!
Sooo, this book tour…South? You haven’t been South yet! We bribe people with food! Atlanta would LOVE to have you!!
Congratulations! I hope you swing through Calgary, because I missed you last time and have been kicking myself ever since!
Looking forward to reading your latest book, I love the last two! You’re a wonderful writer. Hmm… Atlanta, then maybe Florida? We are determined knitters here in the subtropics!
Congratulations! I loved the first two and will order a copy of the new one as soon as I post this comment. I wish you continued success and good luck. You touch a lot of lives.
I am so happy for you. Stay focused on all the joy you feel and there will be a lot more of it for you! There was a little boy I was helping in school, he was about 6 years of age. I was testing him to see how many words he could read. He could read very little, however when he had a six word right streak he jumped up and down cheering his success. “Good for me, good for me!” That was a very important lesson for me, we don’t say that often enough for ourselves and others. So,(jumping up and down) Good for You!
You are amazing and talented, gifted and a gift to others (not only your family, but strangers like me). You are a blessing to this planet- and I thank you so much for putting out another book- which I am going to rush out and buy IMMEDIATELY!
Blessings you knitting Goddess you!
you know what? i preordered this. i don’t remember ever doing that before with any book, not even a knitting book. and, i also ordered both of your earlier books for my aunt — my knitting idol — who is recuperating from a hospital stay. i had to order her new copies, b/c mine are on loan out to friends, again, unusual for me with books, but they are just so friggin’ satisfying to read i had to share them.
glad something good came out of sars 😉
Congrats! I preordered, let the mailbox vigil begin!
Congratulations! Can’t wait to get my hands on it!
And until you tell us where you’re headed on tour, I’ll be praying that you grace one of the many Pittsburgh area yarn stores with your lovely presence. There is one in particular that is huge enough for your legions of adoring fans…www.knitone.biz…and I just saw your first two books there on tuesday night.
Molemmista pist means from both sides/endings. Just received that info from a daughter’s friend in Finland. If you tell me the name of the pattern, I promise more translations.
You’ve written 3 books in one year! *stares in awe* My God, woman, you should be standing on top of a tall building screaming your fame to the world! I know people that can’t accomplish one minor little project in that space of time, much less contemplate writing just one book!
Now go spin more gansey, while I *sigh* go do yet more tax returns. And dream of being an author, a la Stephanie.
I can’t think of a nicer person to have all the fates align for. Congratulations, hurrah.
I am so very proud of you!…Not just for the public acceptance of your fabulous writing, but for being a strong, savy woman who has made a career fit a lifestyle, instead of the other way around. Rock On!
Another book! How exciting – Congratulations!
I can’t wait to buy the book. Your humor is healing and yes, spiritually nourishing. Keep writing.
It’s amazing how things fall into place when you’re doing what you’re *supposed* to be doing. I knew you’d be good at this back when you used to post side-splitting posts to the knit list.
Uh, could you tour in Upper Michigan? Yarn and Threads is an excellent yarn shop…
Congratulations dearest. You deserve every bit of it.
Brava! Really, life is supposed to be good!
Congratulations, Steph! This is wonderful, and that doesn’t always mean karma is waiting to take it away from you. 🙂
I’ll be on the lookout (and thanks, while I’m at it, for always making your books so affordable. Much easier to justify to myself. ;))
Blow your horn loud and proud! You make knitting fun! I loved the first two books and can’t wait for the third!
You rock!

HANK has the most beautiful eyes! And they are so excited looking – I wish we could see more of him! I think your books are Philosophical…try that genre the next time you talk to the book people!
Must call around and pick up a copy of the new book. Any idea of when you will be in Calgary A.B.?
What? That’s YOU? I have seen those books, but never made the connection…Yay! Go, Stephanie, go!!
**hug**
🙂
Congratulations! Look out bookstore, here I come. I have read your other two books and have reread them and … well, I was looking for more. Now your third book is out …. Yeah!
Way to go, Stephanie… you have a gift for words, and I’m glad that you have graced us with them. You encourage me not to take myself too seriously, to be grateful for the things that really count… and to explore everything I can do with two pointy sticks and a hank (or ten) of yarn.
Mokihana
Congratulations! What a beautiful baby!
Yay! I can’t wait to get it! I’ll be haunting BAM since I bought the last one there-surely they’ll get it soon.
Congratulations Steph. 3 books in one year is such an accomplishment. I actually have to wipe the sweat off my brow just thinking about it. Please keep it going at a slower pace so that you don’t get tired of writing these very entertaining books.
Bravo! I have the book on order with Marsha at Needleworks. In 365 days, you’ve written 3 books (amazing!) and soon, in not much longer, I’ll have read ’em. I regularly share “At Knit’s End” with my knitting buddies — and with my quilting ones. “Stash” means the same thing in many fibre languages!
Congratulations! May the Muse be with you. 🙂
Touring, you say?? Why not come to Madison, WI where we have one of the largest Knitters’ guilds in the US and where there are more bookstores percapita than elsewhere in the US!! Great yarn shops, great knitters……
Don’t be modest, you and your books are great!
I had two thoughts on reading this post. (Well, three: one being, ‘Isn’t she lovely?’). 1) Wheeeee! I’m so excited that I’ll finally be able to get my mitts on some practical advice from the Harlotty one. 2) Are you ever coming to Britain? Please?
Yay, book three! 🙂 Congratulations, Stephanie! 🙂
I say now would be a perfect time to make the European Grand Tour. Starting from, um, let’s say… Finland? 😉
Screw Humble! I’m jumpin up an down for ya girl!
Come back to Chicago and we’ll throw a big party!
Since “my” Ottawa probably won’t make it onto the book tour itinerary, would you sign a copy if I mailed it to you? Hint, hint, smile, poke, huh? And congratulations!
YAY!!!
Three books in one year is a truly amazing accomplishment. Congrats!
(and I know that North Dakota isn’t really on anyone’s tour maps, but we do knit a lot up here. It’s useful for staying warm and all….)
Way cool! I browsed through your “Meditations” book at Borders last month and made people look at me funny when I was laughing out loud. I need to buy a copy for each person in my “Fiber Enabelers and Terrorists Society”.
Thanks for the update on the new one!
Thank you for sharing your story about how you got to write and how your life trail developed.
What Susanna said (above.)
You were such a treat to meet in Tacoma. Thanks for coming and sharing your particular brand of knitting humor with us. You brightened an amazing weekend. Thanks for being so generous with your time, autographing books, etc. Your energy is contagious, and we knitters love that! I hope to see you again at the Madrona Fiber Retreat (or if you find yourself in Seattle on another book tour), and I’m eager to read your new book.
Best wishes and congratulations on all your (well-earned) success.
Mary B
Stephanie!
for 15 years I helped run a smart little inde bookshop, and worked at an inde publishing house…be very proud of yourself for 3 books! This is a HUGE event, writing, publishing, and bookselling is a crazy, fickle business – ride the high wave of sucess! I will wish that I NEVER see any Stephanie McPhee book in any remainder pile 🙂
Rock on Stephanie!! And you are headed to St. Louis. Your humor and insight are such the inspiration. Enjoy! And definitly indulge in some red wine and chocolate to celebrate.
Be proud of you. We all are. 🙂 There may be others who haven’t had the success that you’ve had, but that’s not because YOU had it. There’s enough for everyone, and we’re glad you found yours.
Of course I’ll like it! Congratulations!! You are too humble … you rock the knitting world … have that party sistah!!
On your tour will you make it to Virginia? April and Sept. are beautiful in Virginia Beach. hint hint.
Mazel Tov! May there be many more to amuse us all. We’ll brag for you.
I read your first two books and really enjoyed them. I look forward to the third book.
Congrats on the new book! My dh thinks I’m nuts because I still giggle at your books even though I’ve read them 20 times. I hardly ever buy books, but I’ll be buying this.
Jen
Congratulations! Your writing is so great and you are such an inspiration to so many people. I can’t wait to read the book. I hope you will make it to the DC/northern VA area again. If you do, I’ll bring you a batch of my grandmother’s “butter tarts” made with currants — it’s an old recipe that she got from the English mother of an elderly neighbor of hers. (And I’m 60, so just do the math to figure out how old the recipe is!)
Hooray!
Thank you for your lovely writing and fabulous self. I bought your second book before seeing you speak in Chicago, and my Beloved gave me your first book for Christmas (after we had decided not to give each other anything). I can’t wait to see what joy will come when I get your third book!
Hooray!
Mazel Tov! I will add this newest one to my harlot library as soon as it gets to my LBS. You continue to surprise and delight us all with your humor and insight. Love the knitting olympics, love your books, love this blog–it’s everywhere–feel the love? Thank you for all the fun.
When you pat yourself on the back a little, don’t feel bad! Remember, there are people that deny themselves any credit at all and come off pretty boorish. “Oh, that family I saved from the fire? Finding Fluffy in the basement? Putting out the fire one handed? Oh, that was nothing really.” Gimmie a break! It’s OK to feel good after a job well done!
Congratulations on the newest book! I hope your tour brings you to Minnesota this time – there are scads of yarn stores here & tons of knitters.
Bless your heart for making birth and breastfeeding support affordable & accessible to more women. I’d like to do that when my kids are older and not so dependent on me 24/7.
Huzzah to Hank! for ushering in the next Harlot era of reading. Great job Steph!
I guess this is as good a time as any to say hi, I’ve been reading your weblog lately. I was at Borders just before my birthday in January and saw these books on knitting, which I absolutely had to get because I was getting interested in knitting again because of my friends at school. Then I read your book, Yarn Harlot, and found the web site on the back – and have been coming back since. Thanks for the laughs. =)
It’s a sad commentary on the state of affairs, I suppose: there are many people today who don’t READ three books a year, much less write three!
As one who is as addicted to books as she is to fiber, I’m proud to “know you”. Congratulations!
I can’t wait to get your new book!!! 🙂
Sometimes, Stephanie, we get what we deserve in this life. You deserve this “success”!!
Congrats from Connecticut! Looking forward to another good giggle and read!
Steph, you truly are a wonder, it is the way you recieve your blessings that makes us love you so. I too believe that one should measure sucess in terms of how well you mother and how good a person you are, but damnit a 3rd bookbook, be proud of yourself girl, we are!!!! And in amongst all of the book frenzy, knitting olympics and all the other stuff you give to us, you are still an awesome mother, wife, friend, daughter and person, well done!
Well Done, Stephanie!! Congratulations!!
I look forward to finding and capturing a copy in the wild. I’m sure it is wonderful.
ohhhh get excited!!!!!!
I’m rushing over to amazon to order my copy now.
And I am so glad to read that you really are happy with your life and everything you’re doing. As a pretty lost and confused college student, you give me a lot of hope and assurance that if I just do what I like, it will probably work out.
I wasn’t going to say anything.
But it is a big deal. A really big deal. I started reading you just before your first book came out. I remember the post where you were holding your book for the first time… I don’t know. Some of us really love books, and some of us have longed to be a writer. What you wrote in that post made me believe that you were someone who had that longing to see their name on the cover of a book. It was really great to read your blog and know that you were having that experience.
So, I know why you are saying “No Big Deal”. But I’m saying it is a huge deal, and if the Universe wants to smite anyone for undue pride, it knows where to find me.
I’ve just had this wonderful thought. This UK knitter is due to be somewhere in N. America in August/September. I wonder…..could it work out? Keeping my fingers crossed for that perfect time and place on your tour.
Congrats, honey! That’s great. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Congratulations Stephanie! You are SO Canadian. It’s wonderful to know that there are people out there who remain unaffected by stardom! I can’t wait to read this book. You are like a Canadian version of EZ.
I don’t know about Hank, but I’ll put my 5 year old boy against your girls in a food eating contest!
I hope my Meg grows up as cool as yours! (I swear, I forgot it was you with a Megan).
And hey, if I knew of you two years ago, I would have hired you to be my LC. In fact, can I hire you right now? (as I gulp down more fenugreek and blessed thistle. Sigh.).
I totally live vicariously through you. I’d even take your hair.
Tracy
How come the book on your website has your full body on the cover and is red, but the book on amazon is missing your head and is yellow? What are the differences?
Congratulations Stephanie, You are an inspiration to lots of us who have hidden ambitions and talents and yet choose to take those gifts and make their home and family the lucky receipients of those talents.
It lets us know that we too could one day find ourself in your position. Although I doubt I could find the eloquence to express myself about success in such a humble, real and down to earth manner.
You are an actual Everywoman succcess story and you deserve all the love and praise your readers and friends, who see themselves in you, can give
BRAZEN suggestion here: make more than one stop in Chicago!
You were at one of our best yarn shops last fall, but I bet you could fill the house at two of them this time!
My husband was assaulted with readings from ‘Yarn Harlot’ when I bought the last book. He actually found the funny too. Now if I could just get needles into his hands….. I’ve already ordered my copy and will be sneaking it into the house the day it arrives. Cheers!!
Ahhhh!!!! I’m so excited!!!!!!! I can’t wait!
Congratulations! I am a frequent visit to Amazon.com with a 2-3 page wish list that includes your first and third (the present) book…I received your 2nd book in the mail yesterday. It came along with 4 others from Crafter’s Choice and I was so excited. I LOVE getting packages in the mail. I’ve comme to know that I will often be disappointed by the books I order and that was the case again, BUT NOT by your Book Knit’s End. It was way more than I expected. I flipped through it briefly, laughing out loud as I read it and (duh?) finally got the subtitle: Meditations for women who knit too much…Hilarious. I have a small library of meditational type books, but they are of a serious nature, e.g., one was a gift from a friend who is a recovering alcoholic who wants everyone to be a recovering alcoholic, even though they may never have had a drinking problem; another is one I bought in the hope it would help me get through the grieving process following the death of my Mom; others were gifts are from well-intentioned, but mostly annoying overly religious types who push their own beliefs at every turn. But Your Book of Meditations is the one I will treasure. Thank you for making me Laugh Out Loud ‘cuz laughter really is the best medicine! I heart you. And BTW, your handspun wool for Joe’s gansey is looking gorgeous and if you have to much just let me know and I will gladly take it off your hands.
Congratulations! Your books are wonderful and you deserve to be wholly proud of them and all your accomplishments, including raising lovely daughters – even if they eat everything in site. It could be worse, teenage boys eat more =O
Oh, Yaaaaay! I’ve been waiting SO long for this! Congratulations! Now pile them all up in the middle of the floor and roll around in them and squeal (you might want to add a bit of yarn so your skeins don’t get their feelings hurt)!
All done? Good. Now, when ya comin’ to Minneapolis?
CONGRATULATIONS Stephanie! We are all SO proud of you – and the guy at Indigo has told me to STOP pestering him for your book. He promises to call me when it comes in. I dont’ believe him and am off to check again now.
Also, came accross your name with a reference to Dr. Freud. Fans everywhere I tell ya!
http://shesitsandknits.blogspot.com/
Congratulations, Stephanie, may the goddess continue to send her blessings.
You brighten up my day everytime I visit your blog.
Thanks for being you!!
Monika
That mussed hair! Those big eyes! You have an ADORABLE little boy there.
(Oh, and congrats on the book! I’ve ordered my copy – also, I’m really glad they decided to include your head on the cover.)
First, congratulations on the book! I can’t wait to read it.
Now for my pressing question. I know from having listened to one of your podcast interviews that you do something called “armpit knitting.” I also recall that you find it a bit odd when people want to see you do this live. I think I’m picturing it correctly, regardless of never having seen it done. BUT on the cover of your book, it doesn’t appear that you are armpit knitting, or am I wrong??
Did the Hollywood photo shoot types make you feign knitting? Do you sometimes knit like this while at other times stick the needle under your arm? I am dying to know the truth! 🙂
congrats steph. i’ll be in line to buy the newbie.
I knew it seemed like I’d waited a year for your next book. Oh, wait a minute… I did! I’m so excited and proud for you, Stephanie.
Any chance you’re going to be near Oklahoma on your book tour?
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I’m going to run out RIGHT NOW and pick it up! No time to write. Must buy book. Thank You!!!
I love it when your books come out, i look forward to it for months and then i read portions to my non-knitting family, who look at me oddly as tears of laughter (and, with your last book, a few tears of sadness) run down my face.
Great work. You should be proud. And we all like you so much because you ARE so normal.
I hope you come to my local bookstore!
Stephanie!
Of course you should be proud!
But it is your very humility in the face of all that yarn that we love about you. You err. You make all of our mistakes. Then you make us laugh at them! And we are inspired.
Knit on!
I’ll second the vote for a visit to eastern Kansas or western Missouri – Lawrence or KC area.
But I also wanted to say something about your choice to not be succesful in the way that many people choose to be succesful – money, the right shoes… That’s a difficult choice as we all watch not just strangers but friends gain success in careers and financially. To choose a different path that makes our lives have more texture but less security.
I appreciate this more than the rest of what you write. knowing that there are people taking financial risks to pursue their interests and to have more time for family and friends and still holding their heads high and enjoying life. Thanks.
Could that picture of you be any more stinkin’ cute? I love it! And I can’t wait to get it (I always pre-order hoping to show the store there is a “buzz”). I do think three books in one year is an over achievement. Not that I want less Yarn Harlot material! And kudos to keeping up the blog while all this is going on. But man! You must have consumed a small harvest in coffee this last year.
Pat on the back Steph!
Just devoured your first two books. LOVED THEM!! You really have a gift of saying it like it is. It’s nice to know someone has a similar sense of humour! Can’t wait to get my copy of the new bookbookbook!!
Hello Stephanie,
Im fairly new to your blog. I actually just discovered it Sunday. My honey and I went to the book store and since he is a very good honey he pointed out a book about yarn to me. I was excited as one always is when finding a book on yarn. I took it from him with no idea what it was about and read the title, Yarn Harlot: The secret life of a knitter. I dont think a book about knitting or yarn will ever have such a fun colorful title I only looked through it briefly before I decided I HAD to have it.
I was filled with such glee and joy as I began reading. Its like reading a friends blog I thought. (Only you can read it in bed!) Its personal, touching, funny as hell and without pretense. Then I thought to myself, this reads almost like a blog. I wonder if she has a blog. I flipped the book over and there was the web info. YAY! So Monday I looked through your blog back through the Olympics and was hooked. I promptly emailed my best friend and sent her the link and told her about your book. She said she KNEW about your blog but not about the book. I was stunned. I thought friends shared. She knew of a cool blog and didnt tell me. Shame on her. We had a talk and she will keep me updated about cool stuff from now on.
Why am I telling a stranger all of this, you may be wondering? Well Im just that way. Ha! No its because I love your book and find your writing and your daily blog to be very interesting. I love all the pictures you post. Very Good.
The funny thing is I dont actually knit myself. Not yet anyway. Im quite new to yarn arts. I didnt grow up knowing anyone who knitted or even crocheted. My Best Friend is a knitter and crochets but Id never really seen how it was done. Over the years she has give me many wonderful creations. Its an amazing thing to get a handmade yarn item. Like a hug that never stops. Its always seemed so magical and beyond my capabilities. Heh. It may very well be. In January I had a friend teach me a few crochet basics. (This was after I got a book and cockily thought I could just teach myself.) Everyone I know says Crochet is easier than Knitting and to start there. So now I can do the very basics. The first three weeks I couldnt stop. It was like an addition. I had no idea how to read a pattern or count stitches but I made stuff. I made an iPod holder, a camera case (Complete with a button and button hole) a hat and scarf set for my cat and a cat Blanket. (The cat is okay with wearing crocheted yarn garments. Really. Its not abuse and it was just for a photo so I could humiliate her in my own blog.) It taught me one very basic thing, Im pretty damn clever er wait no, it taught me that Claw Hand hurts. Ack! Then I had to take a break or risk permanent nerve damage and possibly freaking my honey out as I was obsessively experimenting with new projects every moment I had.
During my self imposed health break I did what any sane person would do. I shopped for yarn. I learned about yarns and got a feel for what I like. I even got some knitting needles so that Ill be ready to learn as soon as I master Crochet. I bought beautiful wools that are quite frankly beyond my limited skill level. So far beyond my level of knowledge, although an enthusiastic level that I simply cannot bring myself to touch them with a hook. Ive looked at them, held them, imagined what I could make from them, but I just cant do it. I cannot waste good yarn on a cat hat. Its just not right.
So I havent done anything for a while. Im looking into some classes. I think Ive found a teacher close by that can get me up to speed. (My best friend lives three hours away so that wasnt a viable option sadly.)
I hope I can learn quickly. After reading your book I dreamed about knitting. In my dreams I make beautiful socks. *L* I can only hope the reality is just as kind.
So all in all, you shouldnt feel bad about mentioning your books here. You seem to be a very down to earth person. If you feel weird about promoting your book think of it this way, the more books you sell the more yarn you can get for your stash. 😉 Even a small text link on your sidebar would be better than nothing. As you grow as an author more people will be coming to your blog looking for information on your books and things like that. Making it easy for your readers to get information about your books isnt a pompous thing to do, but a courteous gesture so that we arent looking all over Google for how many books you have and the titles. Just a thought. 😉
Congratulations of your literary success. 😀
Congratulations! And thank you for helping me get ahold of your publicity assistant to become one of your early reviewers. I got to see bound galleys which was a first for me.
It is amazing and a must buy for everyone! You can read my review at http://www.armchairinterviews.com/reviews/categories/project_craft_book/knitting_rules_the_yarn_harlots_bag_of_knitting_tricks.php
Thanks again Stephanie, and congratulations again. It is a great book.
Way to go… can’t wait to get a lookey at it!
You deserve it… go ahead, be a little proud 🙂
Oh, Boy! Can’t Wait! Loved the 1st 2 & buy them as gifts for new knitters (& old knitters, too!!)
Thank you! Thank you! for deciding to become a writer. You keep writin’ & we’ll keep buyin!!
Ok–so I sat and laughed myself sick in the book store when I read the first one–to the point that people actually stopped and asked WHAT I was reading that was SOOOO FUNNY! Then, I got to laugh just as hard at the look on their faces when I said it was a book about knitting.
I can hardly wait to read this one, even if it is not as funny. Congratulations! When do I get to purchase the autographed copy????
I never comment because you must wade through so many, but I really wanted to write that, while I completely agree with you when you write
Or perhaps my family’s belief that if your talent happens to be writing books, it doesn’t make you any more special than someone who’s talent is accounting or working a factory line.
what is important to remember is that accountants and factory line workers should also do a little bragging every once in a while, so why not book writers?
wow..that was really moving..Thank you for sharing. I can’t wait to get the new book! And I’ll share it with my knitting guild.
I understand how you feel. Women especially are taught not to brag, not to put themselves forward. Most men don’t seem to have that issue :-D. It’s still a huge acheivement! I’ve always wanted to write, and as I’m currently unemployed who knows. Blogging is my very first experience with exposing my writing to other people.
Congrats on the Book(s). Love your sense of humour.
looks fantastic! congratulations!!
YOu are so inspiring…. for my future possible fortunes like: life coach/therapist/or possible rock star!

You, Stephanie, are wonderful and warm and witty and wise and you deserve all the good things that come your way.
This is a belated comment but I hope you get it anyway.
You deserve everything you can possibly want for the books. When Ed left me I was devistated, and he went on a busniess trip two days later, while I was packing my things in the beautiful house that I lived in, that I was going to have to leave, because the wonderful man I loved wasn’t happy with me. To make this all more interesting, I was having two surgeries in the next two weeks (pre-cancerous lump and wisdom tooth removal). Things were NOT going well for me.
I read At Wits End and laughed. I laughed my ass off. I was alone in a dark house and my life was falling apart around me, and your writing was able to give me joy and make me laugh.
You deserve all kinds of wonderful things because your books are marvelous and delightful. Don’t underestimate the power of your work just because it’s light. Sometimes that is exactly what people need.
I know your book saved me from an entire night of bone-wrenching, heartbroken, sobbing. Instead I laughed until my sides hurt. For that, I will always love you.
The Mad Pirate Bippy
dude….knitting TOTALLY rules.
Nice Room! If the book thing doesn’t work out you could always go into home renovations :-)!
Can’t wait for the book – hope you’ll be coming to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in May – I couldn’t go last year and missed seeing you!
416 comments, wow!
I was at an independent bookstore and looked for “At Knit’s End” but found “Yarn Harlot” instead. I’ve just started it but love it already! Keep on writing.
I salute you with my Crystal Palace dpns.
When I went to the Amazon website and reviewed their page on your new book Stephanie, I was proud, very proud, to see that your book was, at that particular moment, ranked #127 in sales. Super. Great. What a success. All the best Ann
I lead a little knitting group at my church (in Missouri)on Sundays nights. Been teaching them to make socks. I read to them from Meditations and they laugh hysterically. Very exciting for me because I taught most of these women to knit in the last 3 years and they’re just now getting experienced enough to understand most of the humor. Very fun! Thanks for all of your quirky insights!!
Forgot to add – that I can’t wait to bring in your new book and share it with my little group! Hooray!
The world is such a better place with you in it, Stephanie.
i think it’s funny that in your name is the word pearl… it’s like you were ment to be a knitter!
Throw a party and be proud! It is a honorable to be humble, but we must relish everyday for what it is worth. Enjoy the positives!
Aniously awaiting the book..
Judi
Congrats!
It feel’s so good to read about someone who made a successful change of career. (I’m sorry, my English is soooo bad.) And it makes me happy to hear that it’s in fact possible.
For myself I went back to school three years ago. Its not just any school its a kind of art school. Before then I had worked since I graduated high school 1982. Yes, I felt quite old sometimes in a group of mostly 18 20 year olds. But, what the heck, Im much younger inside.
Today I work really hard to make my application to the university of fine art. Maybe Ill be accepted, maybe I wont. At least I have to try. Anyway I will really make an effort to support myself on my art. My good fortune meantime is that Im married to a man that can support me during my struggle and he loves art too. Our kids (girl 15, boy 11) also keeps pushing and cheering.
I can really relate to your thoughts about when does all this good things disappear again but Im trying to live my life a day ahead (of course you have to plan about bills and payments and all that stuff) and not to worry about bad things before they actually happened.
I dont earn a lot of money. I probably never will. But Im really happy doing the best things of all (well except when Im knitting though) and what more can a person wish for? Maybe to learn some better English?
Ill look out for your book here in Sweden.
Best wishes,
Annelie
I can’t wait to get the new book. I have the other two and love them. They made me laugh, made me cry, made me look at my yarn stash and smile 🙂
Hi! I don’t come here much…but I have all three of your books! Great job! I picked this one up in the bookstore and was like, “When’d she write a new one?” When I flipped it open and saw the comment about gauge, I knew it was a must have too. 🙂 Congrats!
