For anyone interested in hearing me talk about you (I promise I’ll only say nice things) the CBC tv interview has been moved from today to tomorrow at about 10:45 – 11:15ish on Newsworld. It’s five minutes, it’s live…it’s scaring the daylights out of me.

Now if you’ll pardon me, the eggs are waiting, and I’ve got a tree to take down. It’s the 12th day of Christmas, Epiphany and the end of Christmastide. All the decorations come down today to avoid bad luck…and since I’m doing a live interview tomorrow, I’ll be sweeping up the pine needles pronto.

  5. Wow, I’m in the first 5? (Third, but someone may beat me out) The eggs are stunning! And all four survived. I’m going to see if we can get Newsworld — we ARE fairly close to Canada, albeit not Toronto. It’ll be worth trying, anyway. Happy Russian Christmas, Steph et famille, Happy Twelfth Night. We’re taking down our Christmas today too. And both of my kitties (Evangeline and Lilliane) get treats, because they were both angelic and didn’t raise havoc with the tree at all! (Color me astonished!)

  9. Here in Mexico ” Los Reyes ” ( The Kings ) is when children get their presents. The Kings bring them and not Santa.
    All stores are open throughout the night and all of Mexico eats ” Rosca de Reyes ” ( Wreath of the Kings ) a slightly sweet yeast bread with dried fruit and a few tiny dolls backed in. Who ever finds a doll in their slice of bread has to prepare a Tamale party on Feb.2nd the day of Innocent Children….this year I had three slices…..three dolls !!!! And in three different houses too…..most people have this with traditional Mexican hot chocolate…….I prefer strong coffee….
    Have a great ” Reyes ” , it officially marks the end of the Holiday season….for me a bitter-sweet day…….St. Valentine’s full steam ahead ( at least in the stores here )….isn’t that awful ?
    The beautiful eggs gave me a friendly push in the right direction; spring and Easter on April 8th……Thanks !

  15. I think most knitters have other – sometimes latent – crafty …uhh, “crafting” talents!
    About the interview (sorry I can’t get it), just be yourself! I’ve done a few of these (as have you) and it helps to just pretend you’re only speaking to the interviewer and then later, pour a glass of wine to forget you weren’t!

  16. The eggs are fantastic! Its also nice to know that other people celebrate Epiphany when so many people that I know think Christmas is over on Dec. 25. We celebrate with a cake baked with a bunch of things hidden in it (like a fish hook, a small anchor, a cross, etc…) that are symbols for Jesus.

  17. Great eggs! I have done very basic eggs in the past, but nothing as complicated as yours.
    Is the interview on the in AM or PM? Since I don’t have a TV, it is important for me to know these things, so that I can make arrangements.

  18. The eggs are beautiful and I decree that they give you dispensation from taking down the tree today.
    The eggs are a tradition among many Eastern Europeans and Ukranians, etc. Many of us follow the old calendar for certain holidays. Yes, we celebrate twice. But Christmas is not until January 7. So, I figure you have a few days grace.
    Oh, the eggs at Easter are deep red.

  20. Break a leg at the interview (I know a lot of theatre folk; I know better than to say good luck). The eggs are spectacular. Do you decorate them for Epiphany? I knew about the taking down the decorations and the tree today thing. My Mom taught us that but I don’t know the custom of egg decorating, other than Easter. P.S. I took down the tree yesterday because I didn’t want to do it on Saturday. I’d rather go out. Sorry, Mom!

    3) I’ll be a mere 150 miles from you while you’re in Washington, at the end of the month. I’ll be on vacation in Oregon during the same period. If I relocate, I’ll have a better chance of meeting you. For some reason, the Northwest is more wool-oriented than LA.

    And maybe I’m weird but I always feel less nervous about live interviews. Something about the fact that they can’t edit what I say to sound like I believe something I don’t. But maybe the risk of that happening with knitting is pretty low 🙂 (I’ve only been on TV to talk about families and you know how twisted that debate can be.)

  26. I have put a note in my calendar for tomorrow. I have set an alarm to go off 15 minutes before so I remember. If you get nervous, just think of all the friendly faces out their cheering you on, with our knitting in hand.

  33. The eggs are beyond gorgeous. I love the variety you’ve demonstrated on them.
    Either of the usual interviewers will definitely put you at ease tomorrow morning. And you’re going to be relaxed, and funny, and informative and witty, and personable and do a terrific pitch for the sport of knitting and the Knitters Without Borders fundraising!! And they will invite you back again!! And if you’re nervous, just tell yourself that this is the excitement to perform crawling around in your innards.

  50. Thank You so much for the posting . I’ve been listening to the CBC all morning and just gave up hope of hearing you .I’ll be glued to the radio again tomorrow morming. We put all the Christmas stuff away yesterday does that count for good luck too ? Those eggs are absolutely beautiful, and you STILL have four!! You certainly have the “”touch “” for them as well as knitting. What is around the light green one ? It looks like a tiny lace trim on there . Keep up the good work–fun I should say –and all the BEST for the brodcast You ‘ll be just fine as always.

    I should hope I could see/hear your interview tomorrow. After all, the kids’ shows are all done in Canada, so why couldn’t I get grownups’ stuff from Canada also? (I know, I know, shut up, quit thinking such silly thoughts and get back to knitting the mohair.)

My name is also Stephanie and I am a knitter. I’v been knitting since I was 11 and I’m almost 15(I’ll be 15 on the 20th) Knitting is a big part of my life cuz in 2006 4 of my family members died(2 of em in 1 week) and knitting has really helped me.   64. here is a good trick to look good on camera–
    let there be air
    between your back and chair..
    it works, (use pillow or prop if needed to stop yourself from leaning back into the chair.)
    the rest is easy.. just talk!

  74. Wow cool eggs girl!! I am not sure I understood what you will do with them, but they are mighty nice. This reminds me of the ever occurring situation at the health supermarket: cashier always says: “have you checked your eggs today?” and I always think, MY EGGS, how do I check them? what could be wrong, should I count how many I have left and what’s it to you anyway? what a BOLD question…. until I realized she means the ones in the carton on the belt, duh, EVERY time… I hate going shopping 😉

  77. Can you tape the interview and show it on your blog?? Is that even possible? Those of us living south of beautiful Canada (USA-but I bet you knew that duh!!) won’t get to see you. I also don’t get knitty but told my husband we are upgrading our satilite package when your show is finally broadcast. He understood.

  78. You may want to let people know that your interview will air in Eastern Time, since it’s live on Newsworld. Most Canadians know to adjust if they live in different time zones when watching Newsworld but just in case.

    I said ‘crap’ live on the radio when I was 16 (won a contest, prize was tickets to a movie premiere but the family vacation conflicted) and the sound of it still rings through my brain from time to time.

  91. It’s only five minutes, by the time they’ve introduced you to non-knitters it will be down to four. I couldn’t do it, I’d be stuck with my head down the toilet all night. You’ve done it before without disgracing yourself or being forced to surrender your passport and I’m sure you’ll do it again. Treat yourself to something small and expensive afterwards (silk maybe?)
    My Christmas trees are down, the baubles packed and your eggs are lovely.

    Speaking of Ukrainian traditions, around here the people would think they were being rude to the Ukrainians if they didn’t keep all the deco’s blazing until Ukrainian New Years (Jan.14)! Of course, our town is at least half Ukrainian descent.

    We got some of our Christmas decorations down today, but not all of them. Personally, I’d rather leave them up & use the time to knit, but I don’t think my husband will let me get away with that…

  96. I went to the place Harlot had mentioned, browsed through tomorrow’s radio listings, and ended up downloading some sort of free Windows Media Viewer thingy. I don’t know if I will get it to work in time, but it’s an option I will try.
    How I’ll do all this while I’m in church at the same time remains a mystery.

  109. When I was in grade school I had a friend who’s mom used to do traditional Russian egg decorating, as you have, with wax. She had a whole case of them. Yours came out great. I particularly like the blue flowers.

    You were great!! You speak so well, and the interviewer didn’t interrupt very much which was also great and unusual. I enjoyed it and also enjoyed watching you knit. You are fast!!     You were great!! Pity the girl interviewing you didn’t do enough research to realize that, in fact, almost all knitters can talk AND knit at the same time. We are a talented bunch.

  131. Those eggs are divine. I covet them. The one on the upper right looks eerily similar to my grandmother’s bedroom wallpaper. Seafoam green background, turquoise daisy-like flowers, and white lacy ribbony pattern overall. Funny how well I remember that!
    I also adore the one on the lower left.

    It’s nice to know that places besides South Louisiana celebrate Twelfth Night. Down here, we don’t simply end one holiday season on Twelfth Night, we kick off another one — Mardi Gras.
    Your blog was the first blog I read on my birthday today — I’m 46! To Angelika in Mexico, I get to have a King Cake on my birthday every year if I want (but sometimes I want red velvet cake).

    I just saw you on CBC and I wanted to congratulate you on your wonderful story about the knitter’s and why you got involved in raising so much money for Doctor’s Without Boarder’s.
    I was so impressed with how you were able to knit while you answered all the questions with such poise & confidence.
    I just received a copy of your book Knitting Rules from my daughter Kate for Christmas and now I am going to attempt to knit my first pair of socks. I am enjoying the book and quite enjoyed your thoughts on page 145.

  140. I think it’s ironic that many people who saw your segment will be impressed by the way you knitted and answered questions at the same time, not knowing that if your knitting had been taken away you would probably have been less relaxed and able to answer.

  145. It is good to have other things to occupy your time! I cut a chunk out of my thumb (couldn’t stitch it/had to cauterize it) and have not been able to knit for a month. So, I haven’t been knitting . . . instead of eggs though I’m in the middle of reupholstering a chair.
    I love the eggs. I love doing the eggs. I need to teach my kids some of these things.
    Good job on getting the halls undecked. We did too and everything is put away . . . well until we find that one thing that we have missed!

  146. In the Greek and Eastern Orthodox churches, Epiphany is the feast day of the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. The three persons of God are evident in the voice of God the father, the physical body of God the Son, and God the spirit, all present at once during this baptism and is considered a very special holiday. There is no mention of three kings or wise men visiting anyone on January 6. January 7 is the feast day of John the Baptist. Now my tree can come down too.
    Who are those people who have the energy to remove decorations and throw the poor Christmas tree to the curb on December 26?

  148. I always miss everything!!! I missed your interview…twice! Grr. Anyhow, yer eggs are awesome. Ever been to the huge egg in Edmonton (or aroundthereabouts)? I’ve always wanted to go and see all of Canada’s big things like the egg, the nickel, the apple (saw that one) etc. etc.

  152. I had the TV on and I did see the Coronation Street portion but there was no Yarn Harlot. Did they change the show in Edmonton and delete you out? I was so disappointed that I didn’t get to see you and hope I will in the future.

  153. Hello Stephanie.
    I don’t have a knitting blog, however, I feel I must warn fellow knitters about the dangers of DPNs (size 4) and also find out if anyone else has suffered the ignomy that I have suffered in the last week.
    After Christmas my boyfriend and his mother were hopping in the car to go for a walk and I slid over into the backseat, and OUCH! I sat up, and hanging out of my left a** cheek was my knitting needle from my sock project. Luckily, my boyfriend is a doctor, so he was able to yank it out (it was in about an 1.25″) and stop the bleeding. He had to go to the ER anyways that day so he picked up some gauze and tools to clean the hole with. But more importantly, who stabs themselves with a frickin knitting needle!!! Needless to say, I walked with a bit of a limp the next few days.
    Now, just last night, I was showing a friend my room and, I swear, a DPN leapt out at me, off the bed, and embedded itself in my lower calf, about 1.75″ this time. I’m not kidding, somehow I did the impossible twice!!! This time it hurt even more. My friend called my boyfriend and talked us through the removal of the offending probe. Luckily I don’t knit with bamboo.
    If there is anyone out there who may have had a similar experience, it would cheer my spirits. And I thought, Stephanie, you, of all people, would enjoy this story. Especially the part where I’m lying on my boyfriend’s bed, in my underwear, as he cleans out the wound with his mother looking over his shoulder…
    I am not going to knit again until I devise some way to blunt my DPNs, maybe with corks, or erasers. I’m also considering making the switch to circulars…

    I didn’t even search the comments for a link, I just headed over there, blithely thinking that a force which can raise $150K in fifteen minutes, would surely have magicked a news report onto YouTube by now.
    C’mon we must have some Canadian techo-knitter who happens to have a TV-card, a You-Tube account and was recording TV at precisely the right moment, in the crowd…non?
