  6. Knitting in the oven at low temp with lots and lots of turning. Good going! I’m glad you could do it in your oven–mine is much too sticky and dirty. You must clean your oven regularly–or, maybe you don’t use it??
    As for the hand-chair glove, I don’t think even your pink thing could top that!!!

  16. Ok –you said obcession is normal and I have been obsessed with seeing The Big Pink Thing. I have no idea how many times I’ve checked on your blog to see it or at the very least to find out what the heck it is . On the other hand , I did really have a gut feeling that you would make us go through the weekend without knowing soooo Monday it is eh ? Sure hope you took a picture of it before sending it out or we will never know . As for the LARGE glove–I cannot think of the proper words so HOLY CRAP!!!!

  20. All I could think of when I saw the oven thing is that Seinfeld where Kramer baked his clothes instead of paying to use the dryer. It worked a few times, but in the end… well, let’s just say, be careful how often you tempt the fates. 😉

  21. The oven worked – I’ll remember. I’ve tried that and sort of steamed things LOLOL; must not have kept the air flowing correctly. Also, your oven must be spotless…very impressive – mine would smell up the TBBPT (the big beautiful pink thing). The humongous glove boggles my mind and she kept going at it with broken cables and everything. WOW. Still can’t wait to see TBBPT.

  27. Can you lay it on, say, a chaisse lawn chair, so it has ventilation from both sides while it’s being blown with the fan? Is there any sunlight in your part of Canada during the day (my friend from Edmonton told me it’s cloudy by her)? Set it outside?

  32. I was going to say that you could send it to its destination via Tucson. It would have been dry after an hour outside and then we would have sent it on its way!

  39. slightly OT, but wrt The Gansey – my mum began knitting my dad A Gansey (super trad Michael Pearson styles) when she was a few months pregnant with my little brothers. If I remember correctly, her Gansey was finally finished when my little brothers were about 6 years old. & my mum generally gets projects off her needles pretty promptly. So I think you’re going along at a pretty impressive clip, we can’t all be 19th century cottage knitters, after all. Glad you’re feeling better, can’t wait to see the Big Pink Thing in all its glory.

Which I guess, is why you are the yarn harlot and I am just me.     The darned thing was drying before I could even finish pinning it out! And my bed stayed nice and dry as well. Definately a bonus.

  43. I was not brave enough to suggest the oven, never having tried it myself, and having once turned a pair of navy socks brilliant orange in spots by drying them on a wood stove.
    My neighbor has those chairs, and it would never have occurred to me to glove them. Clearly I lack vision.

  49. I think you should know that I am writing a term paper have set my personal deadline for finishing whenever you post the results of this giant pink thing. Keep in mind that the paper represents 100% of my grade and is necessary for my graduation, which is scheduled for next weekend. So, if you don’t post soon, I may just keep writing and miss my due date, fail the class, not graduate, lose my job, and be forced to live in my parents basement for all of eternity. No pressure.
    I also think you should know that I have a cousin who once tried to dry a pair of jeans in the oven. The scorch marks are legendary, so be careful!

  56. I want her job! Knitting at work, co-workers missing your knitting if it takes a rest. Sounds pretty good. The hand is totally cool too. As for BPT, I am so glad the oven worked (recalling a Seinfeld episode where putting clothes in the oven started out sooo good and turned out sooo bad).

I’ve managed a credible version of the “wee bit of knitting” at the tip and have figured out the 3 stitch lozenges (don’t know what else to call them) but can’t figure out how to connect it all. Love your work.

  69. We used to put almost frozen new born lambs in the oven and on the oven door – the whole house smelled like wet, toasted wool. So cotton in the oven might smell a whole lot better.

  73. OK well, it’s not a willie-warmer (oh I’m so bad, I will sit in the corner without knitting. For 34 seconds.) I notice that, as far as I’ve read, no one’s asking for the pattern yet. Hmmm. Let’s see, some sort of cozy? Toronto have any buses?

  75. Well… I have to admit to microwaving my still-dampish fingerless mittens to get them to hurry up and dry. I figured it would be ok: after all, I didn’t expect them to felt (no agitation, no detergent, and the radiation of the microwaves in a microwave oven is at a frequency which causes rotation of water molecules… no reason to cause felting of the wool). So, anyhow, I put them in at high heat for 2 minutes, and then would take them out for a moment to let the steam from the heating escape, and repeat. It worked nicely in terms of blocking, the steam really set the stitches… besides, they were ready to wear that day!

  76. Dear Stephanie, I’m way behind on reading your blog-on vacation, no internet access-but just have to tell you how much you’ve meant to me. Quick history–knitted a little when in my childhood and 20’s, put it down ’cause my girls were little, picked it up again in my 40’s. Read “Knitting in the old way” and started to get free, discovered Elizebeth Zimmerman and GOT free, THEN my sister-in-law gave me “At Knits End” and found a soul mate/bosom knitting friend. I’ve read it at least six times (i read several pages a day), just finished “The secret life of a knitter”, now reading “Knitting Rules!”, and you just bless me with your humor and insights. It’s so good to have a connection with someone who knows what, and how much knitting means, even though we’ve never met, and you are able to put the incredible, hilarious world of knitting down on paper. Thanks for all the laughs and the inspiration you give!

  80. I will not criticize the oven — given that I burned out two blow dryers one Christmas Eve drying a sweater meant for a gift the next morning.
    And — uh, wow. That’s some knitting project. A friend suggested I knit something to cover the ugliest chair in the world (which resides at my home). I said he was crazy. After this post, I wonder if she’s available for contract work?
