I mean for many things to go well this week. (Stop that laughing. I have things go well all the time. Especially if they are not knitting.) I’m starting another busy time, and I’m making a little list of things to be done before I start my sprints again. (Man. I just got a little nauseous there.)
1. Finish the sweater so that I have something new and knitty to wear in Florida and Alabama this weekend.
(This is actually done, but the sweater is damp and finishing blocking and until it’s blocked it doesn’t count as finished because I can’t wear it. Still, the odds that it will dry before Friday are fairly good, assuming that Toronto gives it up with it’s impression of a city with a monsoon season. )
2. Work hard on ignoring the fact that while it is still really sweater weather here, I’m pretty sure that Florida and Alabama are past wool at this stage. I am wearing the new sweater. It is my plan. I have even imagined a little thing in my head where I think “shall I bring my coat to Florida and Alabama?” and the voice in my head answers and says “No, I’m sure it’s spring there. Just bring the sweater.”
3. Post details of tour on this page because people are saying that they can’t see the new schedule on the tour page. (It’s really there. Try clearing your cache and looking again. I promise that it’s not possible for me to post it for some people and not for others. It is there.) In the meantime, while (like me) you have to find out what a cache is and how to clear it, here it is:

4. Since I am going to Florida and Alabama (and then Texas) which all seem to me to be the sorts of places where it will be warm, I need to find the time to bring my summer clothes up from the basement. I may need them. (And the sweater.)
5. I need to go get my hair cut. I am not particularly vain about how I look (or I suppose I would own a lipstick) but when I see pictures of myself after events like this I am always crushed that I couldn’t be bothered to even get a hair cut. I am going to try harder this time. (I am still not wearing lipstick though. I have to draw the line somewhere. I have a suspicion that this may make me the only woman in Dallas not wearing lipstick, but I can live with the shame – and I may be wrong about that anyway. All I know about Dallas I learned from the show.)
6. I have to figure out what to knit on the plane.
Yesterday I finished the first plain sock in Luxury,
and today the ribbing is done on the second one and obviously I need to be prepared for a new project on the plane. Maybe the shawl….
7. Oh, wait. I turned my attention to the shawl when I finished the sweater, so it might be done by Friday too.
Crap. Okay. I’ll think on this.
8. Clean this place up so that Joe stands a chance while I’m gone. There should at least be a nod to spring cleaning. At this point I believe that the nod may be emptying the trash in the bathroom. C’est la vie.
9. Get my bike fixed because my left brake grabs if I use it, and since I do not for a second, believe that I am the sort of person who can remember not to use her left brake, I smell disaster looming.
10. Clear up the garden, since in-between jaunts I’ll have just a little time to slam the beast into the ground.
I think that’s it. Is that it? I don’t know if that’s it. The week feels overwhelming and suddenly I feel badly for having allowed the family to take me to the movies yesterday, even though I had a nice time…. Wanna guess what we saw?

Have a fun trip! You’ll probably want the sweater with you in case the air conditioning is on full blast…otherwise, you might be carrying it around rather than wearing it!
It was 90 degrees this past weekend in Houston and I am tickled at thought of any sweater in Florida or Alabama this weekend…
Pack that pretty tank top you made last year, and start another for plane knitting. Two problems solved.

I am in Gulf Coast Alabama. You certainly won’t need your sweater outdoors, but we have reached the Over Air Conditioned season, so it would be a nice thing to have for places like restaurants.
Is the new Star Trek good then? I am a Trekkie and I have misgivings about it. Too much special effects. Please let us know.

It’s pretty much past sweater time in Minneapolis at this point (though not on the North Shore of Superior) so I’m betting Florida and Alabama and Texas are really past sweater time.

Aww… it’s so cute and Canadian that you think you would want wool touching your skin in May in the South. Knitting (excepting some cotton dishcloth/legwarmer work) is an entirely seasonal pursuit here in Austin, Texas (at my house anyway). I don’t know how the yarn shops even stay open June through August.
But we’ll certainly be happy to see you! even sweaterless.

I was reading, and had to stop, and re-read the FL and AL sentance. I’m from Georgia, so have quite a bit of weather experience there.
While May can be a little more unpredictable weather-wise, you will need your summer clothes. I’m not saying don’t bring the sweater, I think you should bring the sweater, if for nothing else than not hurting such a lovely sweater’s feelings. Just don’t count on wearing it outside.

I can’t wait to see you at The Book Center, I thought the only knitters around were me and the hospital ladies who knit hats for the wee ones on their birthday.
I too, did not wear lipstick in Dallas when I visited, so at least we know it can be done.
I had a Harlot-like moment last wednesday as I packed for a flight to my mom’s place for a surprise mother’s day visit. I had reached the “tricky parts” of my current projects (lots of pattern reading, counting rows, etc) and I wasn’t feeling brave enough to cast on my second attempt at socks yet, so I thought, “oh, I’ll just bring a book and leave the knitting here.” That lasted about three minutes, at which point I panicked a little, observed that whether or not to take knitting on a trip has ceased to be an option, and spent more time coming up with a new project (sweater for baby nephew) than packing coordinating clothes for the trip. I guess that means I’m a Knitter now.

My daughter used to live in Baton Rouge La. & a lot of public places there (& in other areas of the South that I’ve been in) kept the air conditioning cranked up. So you might well be happy to have a wool sweater to wear in super cooled areas (restaurants seem to be especially prone to this.)
Make sure you bring both the sweater and a parka to Saskatchewan. We have been alternating between -5 and +23 degrees here lately. I think my car is having an identity crisis as I have the heat cranked one day and air conditioning on the next. Just sayin…

Beautiful sweater. Thanks for your Twitter post yesterday about Mother’s Day. My usually on-the-ball husband missed it completely, although managed to wish others a Happy Mother’s Day. Tears were shed. Forgiveness given. Promise of a visit to my LYS to make up for it. I’m a good mom to a busy two year old and now I’ll have a new pair of socks as a reminder!
It is really hot here in Florida right now. Really hot. Granted, I live in Gainesville, the land of no breeze and tons of humidity, but I would definitely recommend bringing your summer clothes!

As a former Vero Beach resident and current SFL resident, if you wear THAT sweater now, you will DIE of heat exhaustion. It’s going to be 86 degrees today. It was in the 90’s over the weekend. Pack shorts and light sleeveless shirts. We love you too much to lose you.
Love the sweater but don’t bring it to Florida. Or bring it but don’t wear it. My folks live in Miami and they say it’s already August hot. Think of the hottest Toronto day in the summertime and then think about wearing wool. Doesn’t seem like a good idea.
It may kill me (or my car and husband…) to get to Dallas by 7:30 on the 29th, but by God I’m going to be there if I have to get to work at 6am to make up the time. I will not be wearing lipstick either (I’m aiming for not looking like a hobo). I live in OKC, but my coworkers are all from Minnesota, so I constantly wear at least 1 sweater (even in July) and have a heater on under my desk because they are all A/C fiends. Ditto to the humidity warning-my hair looks pretty fluffy these days because of it.
We have sweater weather in Ohio… just saying *hint hint* 🙂

Yah! Star Trek! THat was one awesome show. I was particularly taken with Zachary Quinto’s Spock. And Chekov. And, well, all of them.
Don’t forget Florida and Alabama probably have air conditioning in full force! The sweater may yet come in handy.
Definitely not sweater weather here in Florida. Although they do keep most places super cool so the sweater may be needed when you are inside, who knows.
We saw Star Trek yesterday as well. Chekov made me giggle every time he spoke. Also, as an Iowan, I am not a fan of this new timeline that places Kirk’s birth on a shuttle instead of in Riverside.

Bless your heart. A wool sweater in Florida…..not even in the dead of winter Dear. It’s not “warm” in Florida, it’s HOT, like humid 90’s type of hot. Vero Beach is lovely though, you will love it and there may be a nice ocean breeze going on. If you tend to get chilly if the temp goes below 80 degrees, your sweater may come in handy in an air conditioned room. I hope you have a wonderful time. The flowers, trees and shrubs are lovely this time of year and the ocean is always magical. If you have a cotton sweater, take that to wear and the wool for show and tell….. have fun!

Wear the sweater on the plane over something like a bikini swimsuit top. I arrived in Texas a couple years ago looking stylishly chic in a black sweater set. And then stepped outdoors. Texas puts the “sweat” in sweater, ya’ll. I spent the entire week either freezing to death in shops and restaurants or broiling outdoors. There is no middle ground. And “keep Austin weird” is just half of it!! I LOVE Texas…some of the absolutely nicest people I have ever met.
We can’t wait to see you here in Alabama!!!! Woo! I agree, I think the sweater will be very handy in the A/C. It’s getting to ‘super blast’ weather. Was in the 90s this past weekend.

I second the de-frizzy stuff for your hair for Alabama – I live in Huntsville and boy let me tell you about the rain – we have a new development going up behind our house and they haven’t been able to do anything for almost 2 weeks because the land has turned into a pond (we have had over 10 inches of rain in 2 weeks). Add the rain to the mid 80s and you get major humidity.
Yep. It’s about 90 degrees in Florida, now. Gaurandamntee you’re gonna need those summer clothes. Or, you could buy a new bikini and wear that with a nice little openly knit coverup made out of a terrible on your hands cotton yarn. Of course, you’ll also have to wear your flip flops.
Oh, and I just saw the post above about being only as far south as NC. It is often hotter in NC than it is in Florida. That’s ’cause Florida is surrounded by water and gets prevailing breezes therefrom. That’s not to say it won’t be hot. It will. It just may not be as hot as NC – ask my niece who moved to Columbia, SC from Tampa, FL. 🙂
What shawl? I am now happily at work on “shawl that jazz” in Jubilation twisted (a lovely yarn), though I can’t see myself whipping it out at the rate you did, garter stitch or not.

It’s disgustingly hot in Austin right now… you wear that sweater, it will live up to its name. And, to top it all off, there is a disgustingly high humidity percentage. I’m wearing a cotton t-shirt and cotton chinos and very seriously considering removing the chinos. Too hot for pants? Definitely too hot for a sweater.

I hate to tell you this but – you will not need the sweater unless you wind up somewhere with really aggressive air conditioning. It’s been in the 90s in TX according to a friend that lives there. Definitely in the 70s and 80s in southern Alabama & Florida.

Sweety, the sweater is gorgeous but really. In south Alabama? In May? With 80% plus humidity?No, no, no. That is a heat stroke waiting to happen. However, I agree with the comment about frigid indoor temps. We do love our AC down here.

I’m really excited that you’re stopping in Dallas, but I promise that you won’t need a sweater at all. It reached 90F on Saturday with 60 percent humidity. I do suggest some hair product to combat the muggy weather!

I haven’t seen the movie yet but am disturbed that the same actor who plays Spock played the sociopath killer, Sylar, on the TV show Heroes. Will I be able to separate the two characters??

You will need a sweater to protect against the excessive air conditioning but you will be carrying it the rest of the time…so maybe a lighter weight sweater? Also you will be the only woman in Dallas not wearing lipstick — that’s a given.
I live in Georgia, 35 miles north of Florida and 35 miles east of Alabama. At 1:30 today it was 95 degrees outside. As an earlier poster noted you might need the sweater if theAC is too cold. But be prepared for some strange looks when you walk down the street carrying the sweater.

Yes, as others have already indicated, you’ll only need your sweater for the indoor air conditioning in Texas. It was 90 degrees (and unusually humid) here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area a couple of days ago. Thankfully, it’s rainy and cooler today.
Rumor has it, in DFW knitting circles, that Legacy Books in Plano has reserved a room with a 60-person capacity for your appearance there! Your publicist may want to check with the Legacy Books folks to see if this is true and to inform them of the size of crowds who show up for your appearances. Since I have to work until 6:30 p.m. (and 40 miles away from Plano) that evening, I’ll be the one sobbing uncontrollably out in the bookstore parking lot because I couldn’t get inside to hear you speak. Have pity on me when you leave the building.
I hope your trip includes a stop at The Woolie Ewe yarn shop in Plano–it’s a huge collection of fibery goodness, and the owners are super-nice people.

Sweater is great – cables look good. Not entirely sure that bringing it to one of the hottest parts of the U.S. is the best plan evah, though. I did not see any visits to Colorado on that list….hopefully just an oversight? Have a good trip.
Austin is definitely past sweater weather now. I finished my first adult sweater just before the hot weather hit and had time to wear it twice. Although the the comment about needing one for A/C is definitely true.
Now I have to figure out what to knit so that I have something knitty to wear to your book signing that won’t cause me to melt.

Today we are having a monsoon and it is a chilly 59 degrees. I am wearing a sweater today. There is a saying in Texas- “if you don’t like the weather- stick around-because it will change.” Anything is possible in Texas, no matter what the season. I say be prepared for anything!
I always lug sweaters around when I’m in Florida….they keep the A/C way too cold!

You never know about weather in Atlanta either. Right now this is the forecast for Sunday:
Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the lower 80s. (Remember they’re just guessing and this could change in 10 minutes…..)
My list for Sunday is much shorter….decisions on what to knit….I think I might be crazy enough to start the 3 pair of socks I need for gifts. Though I need to figure out how to wrangle the balls of yarn…..See you in Woodstock. 🙂
Spring has come and gone here in the deep South, and temps are firting with the 90’s, but as others have mentioned, A/C makes a sweater a necessary accessory. Um…maybe a field trip to Fairhope is in order for moi and friends. Be sure to check out the sugar white beaches and turquoise gulf water…fabulous!
I don’t know. You may need the sweater. My mother said it was in the 60’s the last few days in North Texas. Of course, it was 90 last Friday so don’t know how long that will hold up. But, even if it’s hot outside, they should have the air conditioning cranked up on the inside. Long live the sweater.
Oh, and you may be the only one without lipstick in Dallas but you certainly won’t be in Austin. The Dallas-ites can live with it, trust me.

You’re going to want something for your lips in Texas. According to my cousin who lives there, there are days so hot that if you go outside without lipstick or something on your lips they’ll get sunburned fairly quickly.

A sweater in Florida? Ha! It’s in the 90s here…it was already 75 when I got up this morning at 6am! I only get to wear my knit socks for a few weeks each year!! That being said, we would love a visit from you here in Tampa!!!
I had to read several times that you were bringing the sweater in the photo to Florida, where I live (Tampa), with the idea that you might need to wear it. Bring it for show and tell, but you REALLY NEED SUMMER CLOTHES. It’s true that the A/C gets cranked everywhere, but you live Up North, so it might just feel refreshingly cool to you, rather than frigid.
Unless you’re planning on speaking in a meat locker, which is doubtful since you’re a vegetarian, you’re not going to have much need for a sweater in Florida. Maybe you can have them turn the A/C down waaaay low.

You’ll have a great time on the trip. Your family will do okay waiting for you to come back. Ditch the coat and go have fun!

You will want the sweater for indoors because they put the AC down to like – well, your kind of weather. But it has been in the 80’s around here and so you will probably not need the sweater outside. So get those summer clothes and bring short sleeves and flip flops!
Ha! Star Trek is exactly what my family did yesterday too! Great film – loved the new Kirk and our very own Simon Pegg as Scotty, but my absolute favourite bit was the fabric the uniforms were made of – it was textured with miniature Federation symbol shapes! Kudos to the costume designers. I also wonder how long we have to wait before a Scotty’s hat pattern appears!

My daughter’s soccer team is playing in the Final Four (as in the four best teams in the state duking it out since this is what warm weather is for).
Here’s what you do (to make my life easier because it’s all about me, you know)…knit a bikini, drive a couple hours south, and do your book signing and speech from the field. We’ll have a multitude of people readily available to see how cool knitting can be.
Then, you can wear your bikini to the beach that’s nearby.
Bring the sweater. It’s still spring and here in Maryland it is alternating between roasting hot 90+F and chilly enough for a sweater in the evening and when it rains. Besides, hotels are over-air-conditioned, as everyone else has said. So are stores and restaurants.
Since I’m still trying to plant my garden I sympathize with the lack of time. As for the sweater in the south — you could always not wear it and hold it up for display purposes.
As a Jedi worshipper living in a condo overlooking the River Denial (second half of Episode 3 never happened) I’ll probably skip that other Star movie, but when Transformers comes out . . . I’m there.
I don’t live in Florida, Alabama or Texas, but I do live in Louisiana where we have very similiar weather to the aforementioned states. FYI, it’s not spring her. It’s. Summer. 88 – 90 degrees. High. Humidity. You can bring your beautiful sweater, but it will likely just be taking up precious space in your suitcase. Unless you’re going to be sitting in rooms with the airconditioning turned down low. Then I’d say, bring the sweater.
If the air conditioners are turned up insanely high, yeah, you might need a sweater.

Yup, I also went with my children to the Star Trek movie. I loved it, got all choked up when the Enterprise first appears. I’m such a geek!
BTW – everyone who is commenting about how it’s in the 90’s here south of the border? They’re right. And I looked it up, it converts to the low 30’s in celsius. The sweater is lovely though. Maybe you want to find that pretty green tank you finished last summer. (I got a new spinning wheel this weekend and was looking back over your tour de france posts for context and inspiration.)

Where I live in Florida it’s 10 degrees hotter then normal for this time of year. You might actually melt if you wear a sweater. Cotton…cotton is good…

That’s what we saw for Mother’s Day as well. The pseudo-stepkids had never before seen Star Trek (they live with their mother, I can’t help it), and as of the end of the movie, we had two new Trekkers in the family and there were murmurings about wanting to rent the original series. Mission accomplished. 😀
I went to the new Star Trek movie with reservations, because, you know, remakes scare me.
It was AWESOME. Star Trek as see through the gritty eyes of the Star Wars generation, with a titch of Matrix thrown in.
I’d gush and enthuse here, but there’s no way I could do that without spoilers. I’ll just say that the actors did a brilliant job of giving a nod to the original players while also putting their own fresh twist on things.

We are having typical springtime weather in Texas. Last Friday we (in San Angelo) hit 105 degrees but today we didn’t break 70 degrees before noon. Be prepared for anything.
I have a secret hope that I might make the trip to Austin to hear you, but I don’t know if it will happen.

I promise you won’t be the only woman in Dallas without lipstick. Also, I would recommend a short sleeved or sleeveless shirt, but bring a sweater, because we looooove our air conditioning. 🙂

Darlin’. (as we say down south). You can bring your sweater, but leave the socks at home. Get a pedicure and bright polish to match the rest of the women there! We southern girls DO like to always look like a lady, which does include maybe some clear lip gloss at least. Chap stick works in a pinch.
The hair – as you know, even a good hair cut can’t stop the frizzies in all this humidity. The rain is daily right now. Everyone’s hair will look that way. Even with lots of Aqua Net hair spray.
The air conditioned rooms might be cold to you. Otherwise, it is HOT and humid already. A cardigan would be a better sweater choice. In light wool or cotton.
Travel light.
I don’t know how things are in Canada this time of year, but down here in Central Texas if you wear woolens it’s because you can’t stand the air conditioning. There is plenty o’ warm right now.
I fly a lot, and my sweaters never get put away because I always freeze on the flights. Enjoy your wool!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Sweaters in the south!!! I now live in the lovely North Country of New York, and you may need the sweater any time you come here, but I grew up in GA. No sweaters needed there now. . . wool is even too much for most winters in GA, actually, and the air conditioning on super-high is only enough for a cotton sweater. Trust me. (And Toronto is considerably south of where I am now, actually.)

You definitely will not need a wool sweater outdoors in Florida. The weather has been very hot and humid. But, sometimes the air-conditioning indoors is set to “Arctic”; so best to be prepared and show off your lovely new sweater!
I will be in Austin for a month starting three days after you’re there. This is so sad!

Normally, I would be laughing at a sweater in May in TX too. Yet here I sit, wearing a sweater. We’ve had bizarrely cool (please, universe – can we keep it?) weather for this late in the year.
And no worries on the hair & lipstick – counting me, there will be at least 2 of us with mom hair & naked lips.

If I had the time and money I would cheerfully travel to Dallas so that you wouldn’t be the only one there not wearing lipstick. Around here no one notices, but as best I recall from my one visit there you are right about Dallas. However, they will also be polite enough not to mention it. The South is practically a whole different country (apparently parts of it would like to be actually one, but that’s another story).
As someone who grew up in the deep south I can tell you that spring is only a rumor, it’s already well into summer. Dad (who lives in Alabama) was talking 90’s *months* ago. Please, for the love of wool, carry that gorgeous sweater in a bag lest it felt the moment you step outside in the buckets of sweat pouring off your body. (And in “Southern-speak”: Don’t be expectin’ it to cool off none at night neither.)
Just got back from Florida – 85 (F) all week long. Oh, it did get down to 72 at night. So good luck with that wool sweater.
I lived in San Antonio for three years. I went to Dallas once for a training meeting, they might have recovered from me not wearing lipstick by now (10 years later), but will probably still be shocked by you.
And it’s been sorta kinda warm in Connecticut, so I’m sure Florida will be lovely.
Bring the sweater. You never know when a restaurant might have the A/C set too cool. As for Florida, I am Orlando and we’ve had record breaking heat the past few days. We are in the low 90’s!

Since I moved from Dallas to Houston, I think you will be the only person in Dallas w/o lipstick. It used to be me. And bright red fingernails and toenails. I so didn’t belong in that city. And yes, Texas passed spring a long time ago. It’s summer here. Hot, sticky, yukky summer. Wool probably should be left in Toronto.

You won’t even need the sweater outside. We also saw Star Trek and my husband (who doesn’t like Star Trek) like the movie. Of course, I thought it was great and I have a wonderful hubbie who went with me because he knew I wanted to see it.
I was disturbed about Vulcan being destroyed and Spock’s mom being killed. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that there will be more movies and they will fix this glaring disregard of what we know to be true. Spock’s mom was even in “Search for Spock”. She is not dead.

… snort…. giggle… ok, a little hysteria here. I have been in Texas for one year, and am trying desperately to get used to the fact that it is in the 95 F (that’s 34C, Stephanie) on May 11. It has in fact been in at least the 80s (28, 29) all April. I cooed as I knit a sock toe with Apple Laine’s wool, mohair, silk and nylon yarn — I think it’s been months since I touched wool. On the other hand, as was mentioned above, a cardigan is a good idea against the air conditioning.
Bring the sweater. You know the airlines and stores always over do the cooling. Great sweater, by the way!
Re: #9 on your list: I have been terrified to use the left brake on my bike since catapulting myself over the handlebars a few years ago. I landed next to a mosquito breeding ground, and since it took me a minute or two to regain my lung function, I ended up with a ton of mosquito bites on top of feeling like I’d been hit by a truck. It was a great way to spend my anniversary weekend. Thank God I was wearing a helmet…
Dear Steph: You are going to FLORIDA! Floridians put on coats when the temp drops to 18 C. It’s supposed to be in the high 80s/ low 90s F this week: that’s 31 to 35 C! Do not wear a sweater outside or you will die of heatstroke!!!!! You’re also going to Dallas. People in Dallas think they’re dying of cold when the temp drops to 55 F / 13 C (and that only happens in mid Jan/Feb). By this time, they’re already all in tank tops and shorts.
The ONLY place you’ll be able to wear that sweater is *perhaps* in severely over-airconditioned rooms.
Just wanted to mention… I live in Orlando, and it’s freakishly hot. I mean, in the 90s, will full-on humidity hot. I was born here, and I just sat around this weekend saying to whomever I could get to listen, “It’s hot here! It’s HOT! Let’s go somewhere that’s not hot!”
Maybe I can see you when you’re in Vero Beach! It’s only a two hour drive!
Trust me, if I still lived in Dalls, and not Houston, you would not be the only one not wearing lipstick. Can’t stand the stuff- or anay make-up for that matter. I do wear it when hubby has formal occassions at work, but he’s the boss and I have to look good. I’m pasty pale, but blessed with full lips.
It is not spring in Florida and Alabama – it is summer. Full-on hot and humid summer. I am sorry.
You will definitely not need the sweater outdoors in Florida and Alabama, but if they’re anything like Southern California, every indoor place will be air-conditioned to within an inch of its life, and you’ll be glad of wool (I honestly wear as many sweaters indoors in the summer as I do outdoors in the winter around here, grrr… I suppose I should be grateful for the year-round sweater season, but instead I get stressed about the energy output).
I live in Texas and you will need a sweater inside…but probably not outside. Pack it anyway.

I’m further north than Alabama and Florida are, and it’s already summer here. Unless you’re in a super-air-conditioned room, I think it’s safe to leave the sweater at home.
Bring the sweater-the South outside will be hot but everything is air conditioned so inside most shops,restaurants,bars and homes it is on the edge of chilly.
Your hair will be a real hit in Texas-Texas women are famous for their “Big Hair”. The humidity will be relentless so expect frizz unless you find one of those hair products that smoothes out Frizz(supposedly).
It’s too hot for makeup in Georgia,Ala. and Texas–I can only tolerate a little tinted moisterizer and a dab of mascara-lipstick is useless.
You will love the people in all Southern States. And they enjoy a cocktail so don’t feel that you can’t order an ice cold beer in the afternoon.
Enjoy the weather, the history(it’s amazing), the people and the slow easy way of living. You will love it-and they will love you.

It is indeed going to be about 33 c when you are there. But everything is air conditioned. I say bring the sweater! Bedamned with the hot weather. You know how you deny the coldness during the furnace wars? I’ve always been that way about the heat. Tough it out! Wear the sweater (indoors). You’re a McPhee!
Vero is a pretty little town with luscious beaches (so bring a suit) and great restaurants and I am totally at your disposal if you want a ride to a beach or a restaurant or a beer-laden bar or McKee Gardens or anywhere else!
The only way you’ll ‘wear’ your lovely sweater out of doors in AL and FL this month is tied around your waist! And what was with the snow lizard? A SNOW LIZARD?

Hey Steph, I don’t know if you will read this far down in the comments, but what many others have said is true. I live in Northern Florida. It was around 30C here (with heat index was a lot higher) the last 3 days and is due to continue in that vein.
HOWEVER– The A/C is on EVERYWHERE and if you don’t bring that gorgeous new sweater you will FREEZE to death indoors. I also work outdoors, and for those who said it is never sweater weather in Florida? If you work outside, it gets WAY colder than sweater weather.
Too long, didn’t read: Bring summer clothing and your new sweater. Seriously. Sunscreen if you intend to be outdoors for longer than 10 minutes at a clip.
I’m just wondering, is there anyway we can get you to come to San Diego?

Yeah, I saw Star Trek on Friday–it was totally great!!! And yes, in the south it is WAY too hot for that beautiful sweater-it’s 90 degrees already. A nice shawl would work though!

It is currently 96 degrees in central Florida; hotter in south Florida. You definitely need to find your summer clothes. I suppose you can pack the sweater for air conditioning, but I think you need to start preparing yourself now for the possibility that it will be a really pretty decoration in your luggage.

I am in Miami, which admittedly is a few miles south of Vero, but leave the wool sweater at home. It’s 90 degrees here already! Now, a nice lightweight shawl to throw over your shoulders in the air conditioning would be nice!
Yes. Dallas women don their lipstick and “do” their hair, but if I make it over from Fort Worth, you won’t be alone in the no-lipstick department. And my hair do is usually a ponytail. 🙂
Don’t forget to pack the smelling salts for when you pass out from the heat while wearing the sweater! Have a wonderful, safe time!

I’m so excited you’re coming to Austin!!!! Last time you came (3 years ago this August), I was in South America and so mad that I just missed you! At that time I was just beginning law school, and now I’m just finishing it up. Amazing that it’s been so long! The sweater might be useful to fight the AC, but do not let it anywhere close to your body when you are outside. You are going to melt as is. But at least it won’t be as bad as August!

Just remember in Texas we’re all about big hair (lipstick is secondary- and thereby, in my opinion optional) so maybe that haircut isn’t as necessary as you think!

When I was 17 I wanted to get my ears pierced – BADLY. My mother said forget it, getting your ears pierced is barbaric. Never figured out why spreading red paint on your lips isn’t considered barbaric. Didn’t have the guts to try that out on her at the time.

I am thrilled to death that you’ll be in Austin (I’ll see you at bookpeople!) and wanted to just let you know that you’ll probably get heatstroke if you insist on wearing your sweater, pretty as it may be. You should pack the flow tank top. You could maybe get away with wearing the sweater inside since they like cranking up the A/C, but it’s been between 28C and 32C here for weeks now, and it’s rather humid.

You won’t be the only woman in Dallas not wearing lipstick or in need of a hair cut (dire need on my part). I don’t think you’ll need your sweater, it’ll be in the 90s but we do love our AC here.
Wool? One might wear Wool in Houston 12 weeks per year in January. After that a light COTTON sweater is enough – even for the indoor A/C. It is chilly in the airconditioning, but that’s mainly in contrast to the 90 degree weather outside. 76 feels cold when its above 85.
I recommend that lovely Hey Teach sweater. Or something non-wool – if you ever made such a thing. Silk, silk/wool blend would be plenty hot here.

Enjoy your trip. You won’t be the only one in Dallas not wearing lipstick, I promise(none of my friends do who are still there). And that sweater will only come in handy in TX if you are in an extra cold theater or the freezer section of a grocery store.

As much as i would love to see the sweater, I’m thinking it should stay where it’s needed. Bring Cotton, or Silk, wool won’t make it in this humidity. Can’t wait to see you in Vero!
Ah, Dallas. I lived there for a while in the 80s. I was a New England girl — no lipstick, no makeup at all, barely bothered to comb my hair. And there was a Mary Kay cosmetics convention in town the day I arrived. I felt as though I were on an alien planet!

You will have to love it. It’s a makeup optional city. It has a milk bank. Really. It has moms wearing slings and babies all over the place. It has washcloths. It has a three story bookstore! The one you’ll be talking at! People ride bikes. There’s an enormous university.
As, ahem, you know, you could move. Tuition at the state university is relatively inexpensive. Not that you worry about things like that.
Oh, wait, it’s snow optional. And it has a professional hockey team. REally, it does.

I’m so impressed that you actually finish sweaters all the time–and they fit! Your earlier post explained why I’ve had my first sweater sitting in pieces for over a year now because I’m afraid that when I pick up the neck stitches it will look wonky and I’ll have to figure out how to fix it!! Star Trek was the logical movie choice for my mother’s day, too, if I wanted to spend time with my teenage sons. No chick flicks when you’re outnumbered…but it was fun.
Take Hey Teach and that great Flow summer top, and appropriate bottoms. Add some cool jewelry and you’re done.

Steph, Please, please, please don’t pack anything else that is cold weather friendly if you simply MUST take the sweater. I am in Utah and it isn’t even sweater weather here, let alone in Florida or Texas. Also, I have naturally curly hair much like yours – if you get a fresh cut try spraying leave in conditioner on it and you should get cute curls in Texas. I went there several years ago and tried to have straighter big curls with a curling iron – it was funny, my girlfriends started the day with curly hair and me sorta loose waves – by lunchtime, they all had FLAT hair and I had poofy ringlets – can you say HUMID. I have finally made friends with my hair and let it do what it wants – no blow drying just scrunghing with some conditioner and it does me good. Just a thought.
As if enough people haven’t mentioned it yet, I thought I’d give you the local weather report for Austin, Texas. For the past week it has been within a hair of 100 degrees Farenheit, if not above. I can’t even knit wool next to a window without my hands sweating. I’m spinning superwash just so I don’t get sticky. If I drive for more than a half hour, I get a sunburn on my left arm through a tinted window WHILE wearing sunblock. At least for a little while, Spring is over.
Of course, by the time you get here it could be raining and 50 degrees. Things change quickly, and often block by block. I once had a thunderstorm over my backyard, but in the frontyard, it was dry. Go figure.
As far as hair and makeup, don’t worry about it. I have two lipsticks and lots of lip balm, and I think the last time I blowdried my hair or used product was my sister’s wedding two years ago. And I’m totally not alone — my whole crew rolls like that.
But your enjoyment of Texas might be increased if you do like Anthony Bourdain and think of it as a not-USA foreign country. The heat makes us just a little bit off vs. the rest of the country, I think.

I wear Chapstick most of the time, as lipstick wears off and it annoys me to drag out a mirror so I can reapply it without looking like an enthusiastic four year old.
I might start out the evening of the 29th with lipstick but I am fairly certain I won’t end it with it. So no worries. Sometimes even those of us who live here can’t be arsed.
I told all my friends and family that I was NOT the only mother in the world who wanted to go and see Star Trek for Mothers day! I even met another Geek mom in line at the concession stand. (My husband seriously needed more coffee.) We went to the 9:30am Imax showing so we really splurged LOL! It was an awesome movie and a great Mother’s Day.
Your sweater is stunning. I’m always amazed at how fast you can knit! You will fry if you wear it outside in the south now. I used to live in Vero and have friends in Florida, and other southern states. The only way you’ll survive is to wear your gorgeous sweater inside and position yourself directly in the path of the air conditioner. Then you might stand a chance of avoiding heat stroke. You could always come to NY and wear your sweater. It’s been pretty cool here lately (as opposed to the 89 degree weather we had a short while ago) and it’s necessary to put a sweater on at night since the temperature is falling into the 30’s with frost warnings for our area. Have a safe and fun trip and remember, if it’s too hot for you down south, you can always come to NY!
I have knit with Cascade Eco Wool. While you made a lovely sweater for Canada and the Northern parts of the US, as has been said, you won’t need it outside where you are going. It is the weight of sweater I wore inside all winter as I kept my furnace low this winter in Boston, heating only to 60F (15C).
I also question its yummy wooly goodness in the A/C. I know how warm that Eco Wool is. Although the A/C may seem arctic after being out in the heat, I doubt anyplace has it turned lower than 70 (that is 21C). Would you wear that sweater when it is 21 in Toronto? I go with the group advocating for tank tops and light weight sweater or shawl. Bring for show and tell if there is room in your suitcase.
Just thought you’d like to know the temp was 104F (40C) Sunday in the shade at my house. Forget about what the weather channel says, their info is sponsored by our tourism promoters. I’m about an hour northwest of Vero in Orlando. You won’t need the sweater but everyone will want to see it.

Hey, you are busy for sure but we love ya! And I say No Lipstick! I agree! I hate lipstick – on me that is! Now for the haircut! go for it. I had very long hair for a very long time and two months ago I cut it- It is curly and long or was~ Now I have this awesome, stylish haircut – very short and soft curls in the back with long layered pieces in the front that I use a flat iron with and it takes 5 min to do my hair. Love it! Cannot wait to see what you do !

well, if you want an extra item to carry, the sweater fits the bill, but in TX you won’t be wearing it unless you turn the A/C up full blast!!Nice sweater though. Be useful if you came to UK though as we’re still getting East winds which are a mite chilly!
Remember, in the American South when the weather outside is hot, it can be downright frigid indoors. I sometimes wear my felted slippers in the middle of the summer here in North Carolina. Bring the sweater, leave the coat home.
I am with you on the Star Trek movie. Best ST movie by far. Best movie I have seen in a LONG time of all genres. So good, in fact, that had there not been those nice theatre employees checking to make sure it was clear, I might have hidden under the seat and watched it again.
As for the sweater, it’s lovely, and it might come in handy in the evenings. . .but I live in Iowa. . .what do I know about Alabama and Florida?
You might be able to wear a LIGHT sweater outside in the mornings here. It is t-shirt and umbrella weather here. Our lowest lows have been 60F and the highs hitting 90F. I find a light shawl more useful – usually inside where the air conditioner is often turned too low. I can’t believe you are going to be here in Plano , TX.
Um, here in North Florida the temp’s been in the upper 80s or lower 90s in the afternoons, with lows around 65… if you’re out just before dawn. That’s 30-33 degrees C, with the low around 18-19. Wool has no place here, even in the A/C, which will certainly be blasting most places. Go with cotton or silk.
As for the movie, I saw it twice within 12 hours and loved it both times, nonsense science notwithstanding. And the Spock-Uhura connection? I’m just jealous, ’cause I’ve always had a thing for that half-vulcan!

The Daytona Beach newspaper says the heat wave should be leaving today, the high 90’s will be gone, it will only be in the mid 80’s, but Vero Beach will have an ocean breeze, yeah right. Have a great time touring the South, you will love it.
I scanned the comments on the way down to post, so I know that you’ve already heard it, but if you are determined to wear the sweater (which is gorgeous, by the way) make sure you pack lots and lots of anti-perspirant. (It is hot down here!)

Dallas bears very little reflection to the show. Plano might…but prolly not. I miss TX (and I didn’t wear lipstick).
And you’ll need the sweater. Though it’ll be as hot as anything outside, the air conditioning tends to be run at refrigerator levels. So a sweater is always handy.
1. Dude. A florida/alabama winter is like a toronto summer. It is already summer in both those places, plus texas. Pack a fan.
2. Haircut? Texas girls are all about loud voices and big hair. Work the big hair! Tease/back comb it a bit and you will pass for a native. Speak loudly and carry hairspray. They will love you for it.
3. Have a lovely time! Empty no trashcans until you return.
Take from a girl in Florida- it is not spring, it is summer. 🙂 But really, it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. So pack clothes that breath…and wool breaths more than polyester. So you could do worse than a sweater.
My family took me to Star Trek for Mom’s Day too. I thought my 11 yr old son would love it, but I forgot he has entered the “anything you think I will like, I’m not going to like” stage of preteendom. I however, loved it…

Yeah, the knitwear in ST was o.o.c!! Spock wore an amazing metallic looking boatneck before the elders, with a pretty snazzy scarf. They all looked Habu-ish to me. Scotty’s hat was rad and definitely garter stitch! He was also wearing a pretty sweet fuzzy-shiny scarf that looked like Berroco Quest. Oh, nerdin’ out…
I confess that I too snickered a bit at the idea of wearing that (admittedly gorgeous) sweater in May in the South, even considering the a/c.
That said, we have been having a nice cool & drizzly morning in Charleston today – made me happy to be knitting with wool at least – so you might still get lucky. (and please come to SC sometime!! Atlanta is so close, & yet so far…)
Yeah- it’s gonna be about 75-80 degrees, sticky and warm for you in Florida. But- there is very GOOD NEWS- We know how to crank down the AC for a visitor here! Bring the sweater, you never know when you might be in a very cold car or room and need it! Worst case- you bring the sweater, and then turn down the AC in your hotel room to icicle creating temperatures, while you sit nestled comfortably in your glorious new creation and knit some more socks, or better yet- matching gloves.

Remember Jacksonville? I know it was probably just a blur to you but it is going to be way way warmer everywhere you are going than it was in Jacksonville and you were wearing Hey Teach then. Much better to bring a pretty shawl, a tank top or something knit in silk. Nobody in South Florida touches wool from April to December.

Oh my. A long long-sleeved WOOL cardigan in Florida and Texas???
I was in FL last weekend (May 1-4) at my son’s wedding. I wore a floor length skirt, a shell made of cotton yarn plus 3 novelty yarns and a very open-work wool-blend lace shawl.
May in FL sounds like spring, right? It was 85 degrees. My sweet son neglected to tell me that May in FL is like July in more northerly parts of the US. May your sweater protect you against a/c that’s so cranked that you’d freeze. Otherwise may it guard the contents of your suitcase.
I live in Florida (west coast, though, not east). You should have knitted a bathing suit for this weekend (although the sweater is lovely)!
Perhaps your hosts will turn the air conditioning to a low temperature, though. 😉
Anytime you can ditch the chores to hang out with the family is time well spent. You won’t remember 2 weeks from now if you finished a chore but you will always have that picture of your daughter!
By the way, even up here in Oregon, land of cool weather and rain, we have our flip flops on. You may want to get a pedicure when you get your hair cut and put at least one t-shirt in the suitcase. Looks like it is 23-29 degrees celsius where you are headed.
Texas bypassed spring and it’s summer here! In the 90’s F all week. Brutal for May! BUT Everything is air conditioned to make it feel more, shall we say, Arctic? Bring Hey Teach and some short sleeved sweaters or things you can take OFF when you go outdoors.
See you in Georgia! Yes, it is way too hot here for a sweater. Maybe there will be lots of AC in the venue though!! I lasted in jeans until about 10:30 this morning and then I had to go don the shorts.
Though stereotypes are often based in reality, there are also always exceptions to the rule. There are plenty of us here in Dallas who don’t own lipstick or “do” our hair. I’d like to think we’ve come a long way from the tv show.
And I’d say nix the sweater (unless you just want to show it off). Even in the air-conditioning, the most you’ll need is your Hey, Teach over a tank top.

Welcome to the south! I am from alabama (north AL not L.A). I now live in the Icebox of Mississippi… way up in Oxford. Wool only works in Dec, Jan and Feb. maybe March if you hit a cold spell. A good cotton sweater is a good choice. there is another good 9 months for wool season. sorry- you’re sweater looks great!

it’s COLD here in east tennessee this morning, so chances are, it will be chilly in alabama, too. if you’re an early riser, get up, put the sweater on and go where people will see you in it. it’s gorgeous. they’ll be jealous and cold.

My hand-knit wool sweater lives in the back seat of my car ‘just-in-case’. I’ve not worn it much in the last month, but I do usually need something in the air-conditioning.
I’m so glad you’re coming to our area. They announced it at the Dallas Hand-knitters Guild meeting last week. I overheard someone talking about the bookstore and that they probably didn’t know what they were getting into.
Surely by now the bookstores will have figured out how wildly popular you are and how enthusiastic knitters can be.

I once went to a work meeting in Atlanta in March – and I had to buy clothes when I got there because my planning from here in greater Boston had estimated it would be many degrees cooler even though it was in the south.
I know you will take proper care of yourself. By the way, ducking in and out of serious AC can be very hard on your voice.

What did you think of the Movie!? I’m a trekkie from childhood (watched every episode with my dad… of all the series I think!) and even though we ended up going with a couple of non-star trek fans, everyone had a fab time.

Not to worry about the lipstick in Dallas…you’ll be in Plano, TX and I know for certain that there is a large contingent of women who are Burt’s Bees advocates (like Chapstick, only better).
I won’t even pretend to have read the previous comments, so I’m probably repeating a previous post.
1. It is definitely not sweater weather in Dallas-Ft. Worth. And for a misplaced northerner like me, there is not enough air conditioning that could induce me to put on a sweater for the next 9 months.
2. Don’t worry about a haircut before coming to Texas. Not only is it hot, it is humid. I can attest that curly hair, well cut or not, will never, in this weather, be a thing of beauty.

I’ve been knitting (or attempting to knit) for 5 years – I knitted a sweater for my husband – twice – the first time is was in the appearance of a strait jacket, the second looked like an off-the-shoulder style that not even the most out there gay man would be caught dead wearing – so I have been sticking to scarves, shawls, etc.
But – I so wanted to learn how to make socks. So….I went to your first book – and using Miracle Loop needles – I followed your generic sock pattern – and – WOW!!!!!! I have my very very very first pair of socks!!!!!! The heel and toe on the first one is a bit wonky but wearable, the second – fabulous!!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! Without you and your down to earth instructions and attitude, I would have been condemned to remain an “at the edge” kind of knitter – but now – I AM KNITTER!! SEE MY SOCKS!!!!

The South is really warm – not hot – that comes in June.
The only time you might need a sweater in FL, GA, AL, or TX right now is inside a mall or movie theater. I’m a little north of Atlanta, and we’ve had the air conditioning on for almost a month. I’m very cold natured, and I have been leaving the house in the evenings with sleeveless shirts and flip flops. It’s been about 19C at night and 32C during the day, with some rain here and there.
A very light sweater might be useful, but it really isn’t wool weather. (Note: I am working on several wool projects at the moment, but I won’t be able to use them until October.)
It’s beyond spring in Big Texas. It’s hottest summer already, so you won’t be needing a sweater. Sometimes it can be chilly indoors though, so a shawl might come in handy.
Bring the sweater. a) it’s beautiful,
b) you took the time to make it so you should wear it, c) airplanes get cold, d) both alabama and florida have air conditioning which you are probably not used to and will get chilled in restaurants and hotels. Safe travels!
You are in dreamland if you think you are going to be wearing a sweater in Florida or Alabama or Texas! I just got home from north Florida where the temperature was 40 freaking degrees warmer than my home in the Seattle area. All I do in Florida is sit by a window airconditioner and pant for days… pant-pant-pant…pant-pant-pant…sigh
What you need to knit for a trip to the southeast is a portable airconditioner or a big fan with a person fanning you as an accessory!
Dude, you have so never been to Florida in May. Something Knitty is not what you need, unless it’s shorts and a tank top. And cotton… cotton is good.
As a side note, I’m really thrilled you’re coming to Florida- unfortunately nowhere near me (Try Sarasota next time. Just a suggestion….) and during the weekend my mom is visiting from Massachusetts and has less than no interest in going to a book-signing for a knitter/ writer. The knitting thing skipped a generation.

I live near Dallas, about 10 minutes from where you’ll be in Plano, and I own lipstick, but have no idea where it’s been hiding for the last three years. As to the weather, it ought to be nice and hot, but sometimes in the evenings there’s a nice wind and you might be able to get away with wearing that beautiful sweater! Hope your preparations go well and you have fun traveling.
Steph this post has something like 300 comments … only one referring to your visit to Muenster Saskatchewan, though I may have missed another as I was browsing quickly. This trip to a place I can find on the map in 30 seconds has me just fuming … why are you coming to Saskatchewan when I have to be away? I have to tell you I’m working in a place where your wool sweater would just barely keep you warm now, Whitehorse, Yukon to be exact, right beside Alaska for all your American readers. But this isn’t the point, the reason to fume is that I would rather be in Muenster where you will be for probably the only time in your life and I am away! Sad, very sad … but I hope you have a good time at the abbey.

You’ll see tons of bags and tanktops, maybe occasional shawls, but never a sweater. Never, I pray, a WOOLEN sweater. Its the equivalent of wearing a portable sauna here.
But hey, do come to Indonesia some time!

Oh, and for the 19 years I did live in Texas, I never wore or owned a wool sweater. You won’t need it unless you go to the movies.
