I checked the Mailbox Anway

According to the tracking info (thanks Loopy Ewe, that’s super handy for obsessive types) the yarn I’m waiting for is currently in Los Angeles.  I think this means that I can stop checking the mailbox every five minutes, and start being amazed that it’s made it this far, this fast.  The blanket and I are eagerly awaiting it’s arrival.

There you have the thing, with all but one little bit of the border done.
(For those of you who are the type who want to know, it’s measuring about 120 cm across. That’s about 4 feet – so I have no idea where all this yarn is going. It’s really not a massive blanket.  Ken was over looking at it the other night, and he posited that it’s all going to surface when I block it.  Maybe – but I just think this pattern is more dense than the last few.)

Yesterday when I finished all the yarn I had, I took a deep breath, did my best to accept The Way Things Are, and folded it up, and put it on the table.  Then I opened a knitting bag to find something else to work on until the new yarn arrives, and a miracle happened.  Snuggled amongst the socks and such that got set aside when I took up with the blanket was one little half skein of this yarn.  I just about cried from happiness.  It wasn’t enough to finish, and I knew that when I saw it, but it was enough that I could pare down what’s left to do when the yarn arrives – make it so that there’s only a few hours of work when the yarn comes through the door, and that matters.

Robyn is close enough to the end that any minute now she’s going to start looking around for the reason for why she’s still pregnant, and dudes. I don’t want it to be me. I know it’s a little unreasonable to be thinking that an unfinished blanket could be what’s holding the whole thing up, but I remember being this pregnant, and it’s a pretty unreasonable state. I could say something to her like "babies come when they’re ready" but if there’s ever been a reason to punch someone in the kidney, that would be it.  Hell hath no fury like a woman with an entire human being jammed between their lungs and bladder, and if there’s a way to send that rage in another direction, then I’m going to do it. (Hold on. I’m just going to check the mailbox again. Maybe the website is wrong.)

Once it arrives (and no, it wasn’t there, dammit) I have only about 3 hours of knitting to do. Then there’s a rather ridiculous blocking mission, for which Joe and I have to give up our bed, since it’s the only place big enough to do it. (I think that if it takes more than a day to dry, Joe won’t care if we have to camp in the living room. (If he’s smart – and he is, then he’s as afraid of Robyn as I am.)

Meanwhile, I’m knitting some handwarmers out of Sakura Cotton. The weather has just now started to change, and Sam’s complaining of cold hands.

Let’s hope that I don’t have time to finish them. I’m just going to go check the mailbox again.

(PS. The pattern for the handwarmers came with the yarn as a set. How funny to see that non-other than Kate Atherley is the designer. Didn’t notice until I’d started.  Hi Kate!)

  1. Oh, well, one of these days. Lovely blanket. Methinks it is going to be bigger that you think!

  2. Wow that is a really lovely blanket! I like to think every knitter obsesses over their yarn arrival…I certainly do. Godspeed.

  3. Almost first!!! Beautiful blanket! I would love to have the general idea of your blankets…kind of like Grock the sock….think about it. For some reason the border cofuses me, not what it is but how to attach it.

  4. btw – the pattern for those fingerless gloves (or handwarmers) is now free on-line at the posted link. The yarn is gorgeous however, and probably worth buying! Steph – I feel your pain. I’m waiting for one card of needlepoint thread (discontinued) to arrive so I can finish a gift. I had to call Florida to find some in stock at a store!!

  5. Keeping fingers crossed that yarn arrives promptly. The handwarmer yarn is cool. Speaking of handwarmers, you knitted a pair a couple of years ago; they were dark with three tiny buttons on the wrist. I loved them and have been looking for the pattern ever since. Would you care to share the source (if you remember the items, of course). Thanks in advance xoxoxo

  6. How do you feel about putting a gentle fan on that blankie while it’s blocking? I’m all for speeding up the end of this project, both for your sake and for Robyn’s.

  7. Maybe someone else would have a reference source for me on the blanket/border thing?

  8. I had a moment where I was going to suggest finishing the last bit in a bright color yarn just for a splash of color and then I laughed because I know that would make you twitch too hard.
Here’s hoping the yarn comes soon!

  9. I think Ken is probably right–the blocking is going to make your not-so-big blanket blossom and grow like the flower tea my daughter gave me. You put this little dried ball thing in hot water (don’t do that to the blanket) and watch it magically open up and transform into a beautiful flower in the tea water.

  10. I would be happy to have our weather changing (which it finally is today). We’ve had unseasonably warm weather, and while soccer, etc. are more fun when you’re not freezing, there’s something wrong about running around in shorts in October! I considered turning on the a/c the other day because it was so humid. Meanwhile, your blanket is lovely, but I’m glad I only had a scarf or a pair of socks on my lap knitting the last few days.

  11. That blanket is to-cry-for gorgeous. Wow. I can’t wait to see a picture of the little one soothed and wrapped up in all that beautiful love for life.

  12. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed that your package arrives quickly! (And I love how the blanket has turned out. So sweet.)

  13. Dear Robyn, the edging on that blanket is so lovely that it’s be going to be worth feeling like a beached whale for another few days. Love, The Blog.

  14. As someone who just had a 12-day-late baby less than two weeks ago, I appreciate any and all efforts to evict babies from overstaying their uterine lease in the slightest.

  15. The good news is that Loopy Ewe ships faster than anyone else. They are so famous for it that even my (muggle) patron of the arts/husband knows Loopy is fast. Be of cheer!

  16. Since you’re crunched for time, why don’t you block what you have done and let it dry while you’re waiting for your yarn delivery? Then you could just fan-dry the last bit of border when you get it done and presto-magic, you’d be done on time?

  17. I’ve been planning on making mittens and I think it’s time to toss aside the washcloth and get mittens started, in school colors of course!

  18. I am in love with the stitch pattern in the middle of this blanket. What is it?
Maybe it’s better not to tell me. I’m not allowed to do anything else because I have an Arwen and a baby blanket to finish by Christmas and a tomten to finish before it gets officially cold here in Texas.

  21. I am totally not impressed with the fact that your yarn had to go all the way from the central USA to the West coast of the USA to go all the way back to the other side of the USA to go to Canada to get to you. Thats crazy talk. Must be a customs thing.
May your yarn grow faster wings and Customs be fast!

  22. I sure hope my baby blanket intended doesn’t read your blog. I love your blanket, and mine is ‘cute’. I’m running into what seems to be a carpal tunnel thing in my right wrist. I certainly hope it never touches you! One baby set done, and one to go. (Not my fault my husband had twins, who are both now ‘in that way’.)

  23. Is there some reason you couldn’t block the blanket now? That way, if the baby comes while you are finishing up the border, you could finish up the last bit and hand it over.

  24. I am also making a blanket (http://ravel.me/dottyw/bbitmfbitm) and I love it for three reasons. It is my design; it is soft and silky; it is for my only daughter who we never, ever, ever thought would have a child. But… my blanket (lovely and loved though it is) does not hold a candle to your creation. How beautiful and I can see how much work you put into it as I follow your blog.
By the way, thanks for the reminder about the sensibilities of pregnant women. I forgot what that was like.

  25. I’m with Bonnie. I’ve found that putting an oscillating fan so it blows across the bed with my blocked item pinned on it REALLY speeds up the drying. (Also keeps the cats off, mine like wet wool, go figure.)

  26. Haha! I don’t know what that says above my post but it made me laugh. Probably a computer commenting nonsense.
I LOVE your blanket though. I would never try it because it took me 2 years to make each of my children their blankets, but your stich looks so interesting that i would think of trying it! Do tell some of your secrets!

  27. I sure wanted that lump to come out! But when it did, it was only a few days before I wanted it back in there so there would be no more crying!

  28. I’m with Kate. It seems counter intuitive that your yarn had to go from Colorado to LA to get to Toronto. I checked a map thinking maybe I had the wrong side of the country. It would make more sense to go to NY than LA.
But I also agree with all the notes saying Loopy is uberfast. I can order on Monday night and have it by Friday. That includes processing and packing! They (and the USPS) are amazing.

  29. I kid you not that my sister’s first was born about 2 weeks late within a few hours of me finishing her quilt. For her second baby I finished his sweater & hat 2 weeks before her due date…you can bet he came right along early and all that.
Don’t mess with karma and/or the pregnant ladies!

  30. Ken’s right — all that yarn is going to surface when you block that blanket. Look at how the center is so smooth, so textured while the edging has more ruffles that Princess Di’s wedding dress. This thing is going to block out to humongous, ginormous proportions. You may have knit a lace doily for a 747.
Lesson to be learned: The stitch pattern for the center would be lovely for a yarn that doesn’t need much, if any, blocking. Otherwise, scale the blanket pattern back by about 25% or so.

  31. Someone needs to put “Hell hath no fury like a woman with an entire human jammed between her lungs and bladder” on a maternity shirt!

  32. I was lucky to not be experiencing that much discomfort during the tail end of my pregnancy, but I was also determined not to complain after a friend spent the last 6 weeks complaining. I hope the yarn comes soon, because babies are awesome!

  33. “hell hath no fury like a woman with a human jammed between her lungs and bladder!”
OMG- truer words have NOT been spoken

  34. I don’t know squat about knitting. But looking at the picture, I’d guess that all the yarn is going into that ruffly perimeter. This baby sure is getting lots of people excited, what a perfect welcome to the world! Thanks for sharing.

  35. There was a moment at that point in my pregnancy where the inverted baby managed to kick me in the rib, twice, hard and I remember being ready to give someone a lot of money to be done with it. I ranted about it to my spouse but it was so surreal and he could not relate. I hope our government’s inability to do its job at the moment doesn’t delay your yarn, because I agree about needing to not be in the way of a baby that’s due (and a mom who is ready to be the only person in her body again.)
    Nice blanket!

  36. (see standard clichéd fan-squee words here)
I’m hoping that you’ve taken notes on the layette set and this lovely blanket, and that either way, you are able to write up a pattern for them all, as I have money ready! I’ve trolled patterns, and I like yours best.

  37. The blanket looks amazing! And raises a technical question about sideways knitted-on borders. I always have trouble getting the first row attached. It looks clunky. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  39. Shouldn’t you be starting your sweater? There’s only a week left!
Lovely, lovely blanket. I’m sure it will be wrapping that wee babe very soon!

  40. My SIL is in the same predicament as your SIL. Her due date was this past Saturday. Forturnately, my knitting for this baby, for now, is done. Here’s hoping your yarn travels swiftly through customs and we both have a new baby (that doesn’t belong to us!) by Thanksgiving!

  41. I’ll be excited to see the post-blocking product. It will be beautiful. (I’m sorry your site is being bombarded by nonsense bots that like to use Japanese characters. It kinda sucks.)

  42. Yeah, I had my first little? Human jammed in there 3 1/2 weeks over. Labor seemed unreal, hard to describe.

  43. It’s a pity you don’t have a donate button! I’d without a doubt donate
to this outstanding blog! I suppose for now i’ll settle
for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account.
I look forward to new updates and will talk about this site with my Facebook group.
    Chat soon!

  44. An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto
a co-worker who was doing a little homework on this. And he actually bought me lunch due to
the fact that I found it for him… lol. So let me reword
this…. Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending
some time to discuss this topic here on your web site.

  45. YH –
The blankie looks amazing!! I sent more Loopy Love to them yesterday as I asked for status of my order – I told them they could hold mine up as long as necessary only if it meant your order was being rushed!! 🙂
Poor Robyn – sending her soothing vibes & good karma but patience to wait for your blanket to be finished properly as well.
Don’t tell her I said that? I haven’t been pregnant yet lol
Keep up the awesome work – those fingerless mitts look really cozy …

  46. I remember that stage of pregnancy. I looked like a dirigible, I was commuting into New York 5 days/week, and people would ask, When are you due? My response with a snarl: NOT soon enough!
But I did get my son’s baby quilt almost done, and he came before I got to sew the border on. Hang in there!

  47. Hell hath no fury like a woman with an entire human being jammed between their lungs and bladder
Truer words never spoken, Ms. Harlot. I remember feeling like the Goodyear Blimp and having only one outfit that still fit.
P.S. I have only one child. This might be the reason. All these years I thought it was because I was 40 when he was born.

  48. You are a GREAT Mom! I am not compulsive about matching things, but the first two were just too far off. Both of the new pairs look awesome.

  50. I’m not sure exactly why but this site is loading extremely slow for me.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end?
I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

  51. Very good blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you propose starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused ..
    Any suggestions? Many thanks!

  52. It is perfect time to make some plans for the longer term and it
is time to be happy. I have read this post and if I may just I wish to recommend you few interesting issues or tips.
Maybe you could write subsequent articles relating to this article.
I desire to learn even more issues about it!

  53. I believe everything typed was very reasonable.
However, think on this, suppose you added a little content?
I am not saying your information is not good, however suppose you
added a post title that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean Yarn Harlot: I checked the Mailbox Anway is kinda vanilla.
You might peek at Yahoo’s front page and note how they create article headlines to get viewers
interested. You might try adding a video or a
related picture or two to get people excited about everything’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it would make your posts a little livelier.

  54. Hey just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let
you know a few of the images aren’t loading properly.
I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue.
I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both
    show the same results.
