I have knit a washcloth. 
It’s a very nice one, and it only took a little while last night, and I think it’s quite pretty and lovely and I had planned to make it for a while. I plan to make quite a few of them actually. I ordered a cone of Sugar and Cream cotton to do it – I’m telling you that so I’m clear that this wasn’t a whim. Yesterday I decided it was as good a time as any to start churning out a stack of them, and two things happened. First, a knitting friend of mine asked what I was making while we were on the phone. "A washcloth" I told her, and then she didn’t say anything. "A nice one." I said, still waiting for her to answer. Finally, after what I suspect was the amount of time it took her to pick herself up off her DPNs, she said "Is it lace entrelac or something?"
Fast forward about an hour, and my mum was here for supper. After we ate, I fetched my knitting out to the garden and she asked what I was making. "A washcloth" I answered, and spread it out for her to see.
"Oh." She said, and I watched her search for words. "Isn’t that a bit…rudimentary for you?"
That was two people inside of an hour shocked I would be making a washcloth, and you know, that surprises me a bit. I like a feat of knitterly-daring-do as much as the next knitter, and I’m experienced enough to pull of whatever I like (I think) but why would that mean that I left the world of simple things behind? I dream of giving away stacks of lovely, hand knit washcloths this Christmas, tied up with pretty ribbon and paired with lovely soaps, and I can tell you exactly why. 
In my mother’s bathroom (and lots of other bathrooms in our extended family) there is a small pile handknit washcloths. I made them about ten years ago, and they’ve enjoyed just about constant use since. They are totally ratty and used up, and that flatters me as a knitter. Who wouldn’t want their work appreciated almost daily? She loves them. Same goes for my Aunt Yvonne – she’d rather use a handknit one over a store bought, she thinks they’re nicer, wash better and last longer, and I think she’s right. What’s nicer than a hand-knit thing that you can pitch in with the towels on wash day? 
I love surrounding myself (and other people) with useful, beautiful handmade things that are long lasting, high quality and remind people that knitted stuff isn’t just window dressing. So, why not knit a washcloth?
(PS. Because someone will ask, and even though I swear you don’t need a pattern, here goes. Using worsted weight cotton and 4.5mm needles, cast on some stitches. I use about 30-35, but this one is 31. Choose a stitch pattern you like. This one is Bee Stitch, but you can do ANYTHING. Whatever goes in the middle, I like garter stitch borders, because I like them nice and square and finished looking. I knit six rows, then keep the first and last three stitches in garter throughout. Knit until it’s just about a square, then knit six rows. Cast off. Glory in the useful thing you have wrought. Ignore naysayers. They don’t understand how useful your skills are going to be after the zombie apocalypse. They’ll be washing their faces with rags and leaves while begging us for a washcloth. We will be as Gods.)
I love knitting washcloths! Nothing beats a quick, useful knit when you’re in the middle of a slogging, slow one — just to remind yourself that you CAN finish something!
I feel the same. sis and friends now have, and love, wash clothes knitted with organic cotton. Kinda like them as dish clothes too: wash, toss into the laundry, no mildewy-dirty sponge.
Am I first? Yay!! I’m totally with you on the useful things that get used up – it’s so flattering. My nephew has totally worn out the hat I made him (out of acrylic), so this Christmas he’s getting the exact same hat in wool. That’s his reward for loving his Auntie. And I love your gorgeous white washcloth.
As gods, indeed. They will also be begging for hand knit socks to keep their frozen feet warm, because zombie apocalypses always include extended winter (just to make it really awful).
I like knitting washcloths. They are fun and quick to knit!
I made a friend of mine a pile of washcloths with her initial on them. I should check and see if she needs more. My mom uses hers for everything: the really pretty ones for bathroom use, the odds and ends ones [she’ll take those too :)] for washing dishes. I should get a few more cranked out for her.
When my office was discussing who we would band together with during the zombie apocalypse, I was chosen for my knitting skills. “We will be as Gods” indeed! 🙂
Truth be told, I do not have the patience for washcloths. Oh sure, I can knit hats up the wazoo, but you give me a ball of cotton and needles, and the stuff will just gather dust.
Every year, my grandmother gifts each of her ‘grown up’ grandchildren with two or three handknit dishcloths. They are the best dishcloths I own!
Sometimes, making a nice heap of something simple is just lovely. I made a heap of dribble-cloths for a new baby a few years ago, and it was so satisfying having that little stack of folded loveliness.
Here here! I often think about how useful knitting will be if I’m ever stranded on an island…..wait, I think I need to also learn to spin in case I’m not marooned with my stash!
Love washclothes and expecially handmade ones. I also make wonderful dishcloths and give them as gifts. They are awesome and I never buy those thin ones at the store. Thanks for sharing and they are really pretty and I’m sure everyone will love them.
Lovely washclothes and bath mitts are little bits of happiness that brighten up the bathroom (or kitchen). This is the reason that Sugar and Cream exists. Just sayin’…
You have no idea how many of my skills I expound on to my friends in case of Zombie Apocalypse. Knitting, spinning, preserving fruits and veggies, knowing the common edible wild plants of Canada, fire building… 😉
Those are gorgeous washcloths. I love to sit down and bang a few out now and then. It’s a good break from complicated stuff and has such a sense of accomplishment because you can finish one in such a short time.
I agree about the washcloths. I get on a kick every once in a while. People question me about them wondering why I would waste time knitting a washcloth. Well because I like them. 🙂

I love making washcloths. I sadly don’t have a wide audience for knit gifts, but I love the idea of matching washcloths and handmade soaps for gifts as often as possible. They’re also a great housewarming gift, paired with some fancy dish soap.

I often keep a washcloth-in-progress in the console thingy in my car, just for those moments when I need a quick fix, or I happened to forget a sock-in-progress (which should always be in my purse). They’re nice, brainless knits if I need them to be, and I love ending up with something so utilitarian in the end. I also dream of stabbing a zombie through the eye with a knitting needle, much in the style of Jamie Lee Curtis in “Halloween!” I think that scene gives knitters an edginess that we often lack. Don’t mess with someone who often wields a long pointy stick!
Yes. When civilization crumbles, we are SO going to be ahead of the curve. Everyone will be stumbling around looking like extras from “The Matrix” and we’ll be sporting aran sweaters and Color Affections and reading mitts and stuff. That is, if you don’t have knitterly ADD like I do and have 47 different projects going at once. Oh well. Maybe my attention span can last a washcloth. Not a bad idea!

I got exactly the same reaction when I told someone I was knitting dishcloths. “Why make them when you can buy them for a dollar?” Well, I have fun experimenting with different patterns and stitches, and I like using them. They were a popular item at the sale-of-knitting-items our knitting ran. Maybe I’ll gift that sceptic with a stack one day.
I keep telling my friends how useful knitting will be after the apocalypse. I usually bust out my crochet hooks for dishcloths because filet mesh scrubs so nicely but you have me seriously considering knitting the next ones.
Me too. I have knit one washcloth and have another on the needles. Or should I say I have another on one of many many sets of needles with WIPs. I liked it. It was hot and muggy outside so I felt trapped in the house, stewing until evening when it would cool off. The yarn is a lovely soft worsted organic, naturally brown cotton. The pattern was simple and so tolerable in the heat. I gave it away as a hostess gift to a friend and got about the same reaction as you. I suspect, however, that when I return to my friend’s house next year, it will have seen heavy use. So I’m going to make more, if only for myself and maybe my mother. Hand towels too. Sometimes one just needs simple sensual knitting.
Washcloths are like the hot cocoa of knitting. Comforting, easy, and always there. They are what I go to when I’m too anxious to knit anything requiring brain power. My grandmother has used hers to the point that they have holes in them.
I got into an extended dishcloth phase myself recently. I had been ill for a couple of months and needed to knit for stress management but just couldn’t face a difficult project.
I knit and knit, stacking them on the coffee table, until finally my husband asked how much bigger the stack would get. (I think I hit 15 before I ran out of steam and was able to progress to more complicated projects).
In the end, it was a great example of how knitting can keep you sane, not to mention that my kitchen will be well-equipped for quite some time.
I also love knitting simple, lovely, useful things – it does my heart and hands good and hopefully, does the same to those who receive them.
I also am a very experienced knitter. In July 2012, I began knitting hand towels (I saw a reversible pattern and started to make one on a camping trip). It was so fast and the cotton was a nice change in the 95 degree weather. These towels became my go-to project for the last year and replaced socks as the project that always is in my bag. I loved the odd looks I received when people asked what I was making. In May, I finally realized that I had made several in each color and responded to one query that I was making handknit placemats for teacher gifts. It was shocking how overwhelmingly positive the reaction was to the new use (same pattern, new product!). Even the final installment (July 2013) of Anne Hanson’s Bare Naked Knit Club has patterns for washcloths and hand towels. We can’t ALL be crazy!

Of course you make dishcloths, they’re the popcorn or potato chips of knitting. A hand-knitted dishcloth atop a tin of snack mix or jar of homemade jam is a perfect hostess gift. I have a beautiful ceramic bowl on my coffee table that I keep colorful dishcloths in for emergency gifts–bright, cheerful, and functional–what’s not to love. I found a FREE pattern for a double thick washcloth at Michaels last winter. The resultant cloths are so wonderful so far I can’t bear to part with them. I never thought of making them white, I’m addicted to variegated.
Our knitting guild has a dishcloth exchange every year at our holiday party. Everyone loves hand-knit cloths.
the first thing I ever knit for my mother was a lovely feather and fan dishcloth in hempathy. it has ever since resided in her china hutch, unused. I implored her to use it, I even offered to break it in for her by doing the dishes. She refused, and suggested that I knit her some socks instead. “Why?” I asked, “You won’t wear them!” Epilogue: she still hasn’t used the dishcloth, but she does wear the socks, cowl and shawl I have since knit for her.
A story that repeatedly makes its way round the weaving community is that a weaver was showing a golfing friend the tea towels she had recently woven. The golfer asked if she couldn’t just buy them at Wal-Mart for a couple dollars. The weaver replied “couldn’t you just carry the ball and drop it in the cup?” You have to enjoy the process. I think your hand knit wash cloths are beautiful.
Brilliant! Solves my problem of it being August with no inspiration whatsoever for Christmas gifts, but lots of ideas of big projects for myselfish… Helps with the ridiculous amount of cotton yarn I bought on sale because my husband thought it was a good idea (except that the beautiful white you are using looks SO perfect)… And will let me practice oh-so-many stitch patterns.
And simple enough that I might even be able to knit while reading… What is the expected time from turning in your fabulous manuscript to having a new Yarn Harlot book in my hot little hands?
I love knitting washcloths! They’re the perfect side project when you’re knitting something large and need a break. I used to get the same bewildered looks when I made washcloths, but after making a pile of them I can’t help but admire all my beautiful cotton washcloths <3

I knit dishclothes all year long and stash them until I give them as gifts at Christmas. I think it’s great that even you (a humble superstar!)knock out some dishclothes, too. Are you going to make each one the same pattern or each different?
I knit them as dishcloths. Canadian living in England and I can’t get the right dishcloths. I have fun with my Treasury of Knitting designs and also use the garter stitch edge. I made some small ones for my grandson as washcloths or flannels as known here. Anyway I am sometimes too tired to do much thinking! Maggie

I knit a whole stack of them to use in the kitchen when I really needed nice simple therapeutic knitting and they’re still going strong years later! A little immersion in the simple things sounds perfect!
I love my knitted washcloths (and dishcloths). They satisfy my desire for my knitted goods to be both beautiful and practical. I have a stack in my bathroom that I use for my face, and I’m very fond of the Garterlac pattern from Criminy Jickets.

I admit my initial reaction was the same as your mom and friend. But, then I kept looking at how pretty and fresh the washcloth looked and started coveting some for myself…and, when you mentioned giving them as gifts, my whole brain exploded with a long list of friends who would adore getting these as Christmas gifts! OMG, I need to order some creamy cotton right away and get going! Oh, and thanks for the “we will be Gods” laugh, too.
I too love to knit washcloths. My hospital knit group made dozens of them, made care packages and donated them to all the shelters near our hospital. I love to use new stitches. You can make with whatever pattern your friends love- I did one with a pug for my pug lover… Why, I just made a Little Fishy Bath Mit for the nicest little gift.
I give washcloths away all the time. Everybody needs them and they are special being handmade. Basically, washcloths rock and are my go to between projects. A palette cleanser so to speak.
Dishcloths are my “thank you for having me over” gift. I always get a kick out of seeing them the next time I am there (and make a mental note to bring another one for that person!) Also cotton baby bibs are given when I here someone is expecting a baby.

I love my knitted washcloths. I make them from Hempathy. I, too, dream of giving them away in stacks, but somehow that never happens. Much as I love them, knitting washcloths on sz. 4 needles does not result in stacks and stacks. Hmmm, maybe hempathy doubled on sz. 6? I’ll have to give that a try. I don’t care for 100% cotton because in my bathroom, at least, they take days to dry out after use and a musty smell is often the result. I’ve never had a Hempathy face cloth become musty.
Oh heavens, i store washcloth fixings in my desk drawer at work. It is the best for quick, portable mindless knits. My fav is cast one on and increase 1 stitch every row until it’s big enough and then decrease one stitch until there is one stitch left and cut yarn and pull the yarn through the last stitch.
Easy peasy! However, i don’t use white… currently knitting red ones for valentines day. White scares me because it turns grey or beige too quickly. great post today, thanks!
What a great idea. I have been wracking my brain of what to make my extended family and co-workers for Christmas, and this is it. I can’t wait to get my cone of white and make away. I don’t understand what the problem might be. A scarf is just a longer towel or dishcloth, and people don’t question them. We knit all kinds of practical and utilitarian things like socks, mittens, hats, all of which can be purchased at the big box store for very little money. Give someone a handmade accessory and they are happy. So get happy with the dishcloths, folks! I too stay away from white: our water is very hard, and it’s difficult to keep things white.
Carry on and fill the long range planning boxes, everyone!
I feel a revolution is afoot. Some of my knitter friends and I are already planning on knitting some wash clothes now. It seems like so much fun, we must join in!

Oh, me, too! I LOVE knitting washcloths! Near instant gratification, a place to try out new stitch patterns – and useful! Just because we can knit complicated patterns doesn’t mean we’ll never knit relatively simple things again. Keep going – I’ll send you my address under separate cover. You know, so the washcloth-and-soap will get to the right place.
Thanks for a great stitch suggestion for the little bag I was going to make both to hold soap odds and ends and to be an “exfoliator” … and then I think some classy washcloths are in order.
Before I returned to knitting a very practical elderly aunt gave me a standard diagonal garter stitch dish rag. I thought it was sort of tacky–until I used it. And now I have a drawer full.
I also tell people I’m practicing skills for the post-apocalypse; it always gets a laugh, until I ask what they will trade me for socks when the zombies arrive? Heh.
And I keep a dishcloth kit in my car as my long red light/stuck in traffic knitting; it takes a month of driving to get a dishcloth, but I get one! I use the ‘Grandma’s favorite’ pattern: CO 4; k2, YO, knit to end; repeat until it’s 44ish stitches, then k1, k2Tog, YO, k2Tog, k to end; repeat until it’s 4 stitches again. Bind off. Those cloths are tough, textured enough to scrub with, and keep their shape. I love them.
LOL! Several years ago, I’d planned to do just this for my mom for Christmas. One afternoon, we were going through her linen closet and I came across some handknitted cloths that a friend had made for her. My mom said, “Oh, X gave me those. It was very nice of her, but really, I can’t think of anything more useless. Why would she spend time making these?” Needless to say, my mom did not get knitted washcloths for Christmas.
I absolutely love to knit washclothes!! I knit them in-between other projects & keep a bunch around – – they make great hostess gifts or last minute gifts – – wrap up fancy soap in the washcloth & tie it up with yarn. Folks love them! It’s also my go-to knitting when life gets too intense & stress gets high. It’s mindless & still pretty. It’s also a great way to try out new stitches in a big enough “swatch” to find out how you like it. Just sayin’ . . . . .
Next to Straights vs. Circular, there are few things as controversial in the knitting world as knitting wash cloths!
My 14-year old granddaughter already thinks I’m a knitting god. She loves my handknit washcloths, and she absolutely adores my handmade soap. She frequently asks for both when a gift-giving occasion draws near. She will be clean and shiny when the zombie apocalypse strikes (as will just about everyone else in my family).

I did this a few years ago when I decided to learn some new stitch patterns. Got out my stitch dictionary, and made every women on my gift list a washcloth, bought lovely handmade soaps from my favorite local vendor, and put both in handmade pottery bowls. Everyone loved it.
My best dishcloths were hand knit out of chunky linen. Just about killed my wrists.
Now I want to knit a pile of washcloths for Christmas presents, too! If only I didn’t just buy a bunch of fingering weight merino for a scarf this afternoon at Magpie (I believe you’ve been there…)

I have been having washcloth cravings! I like to knit them, crochet them too. I have a special shoebox in my craft room where I collect the finished ones waiting for them to be needed as gifts. A few years ago I knit sets of them for my niece and nephews and their spouses, put them into a nice plastic reusable box, added dish brushes and I forget what else, and tied them with yarn to give at Christmas. Thoroughly practical and appreciated. My shoe box is empty and I need to make some to fill it again. I have dishcloth binges sometimes. 🙂
I love a handknit washcloth. I have several in Sugar and Cream (or whatever it is called, I am not sure right now that is the real name.) The colors are “Hot”, they all have that word in front of the colors, orange, lime green, yellow, pink, purple. They are vibrant and used every single day in the place of paper towels. We should all useless paper, right? I have given stacks of four packs to friends who are (forced)to tell me they love them too.
I, too, have received “looks” as well as uttered and non-uttered comments when knitting and/or gifting washcloths, and I, too, carry a WIP washcloth in my car utility container for “just-in-case” like Erin (August 9, 2:56 p.m.).
I have also received beautiful reactions as well, anyway, a gift from the heart and hands is never wasted. The energy of giving is there in the finished work for all who allow it in.
Giving away stacks of hand knit washcloths with fancy soaps is always my Christmas dream too!

See, this puzzles me. I’ve never made washcloths because the cotton yarn feels A LOT rougher than the washcloths I buy in Target. Yet you are all saying they feel great and people love them. Am I using the wrong cotton (Lily’s Sugar and Cream)? Or do they soften up once you wash them a few times?
Also, should I make them bigger than I want them, to allow for shrinkage in the dryer?

There is something soothing to me about knitting washcloths/dishcloths. It’s easy to remember the pattern and just go with it. You don’t have to think about it and can just let your mind wander. It’s a lovely thing! (Especially after working on something hard and time consuming.)
I am also knitting dishcloths and washcloths this week. They are wonderful, simple and a nice break from complicated lace.
I wonder just how many bee stitch washcloths have been started already. . . the cotton yarn companies won’t know what hit them!

I love homemade washcloths, my grandma used to knit a big stack in all different colors and let us all choose the ones we wanted each time we saw her. Now that the family’s washcloth supply rests with me I find we all prefer crocheted (gasp). 🙂 We just like how they don’t stretch as much and if you get a hole it stays just a little hole instead of unraveling half the cloth (since we all use em till they disintegrate). Every Christmas I stick a few in everyone’s goodie baskets. As simple as they are to make it really is nice to be making something so appreciated and useful.
Early in July I got the same strange response as you did at first when I was knitting leaf shaped washcloths to put next to my sink to use in summer’s hot weather when the sweat runs down in rivulets as I garden or clean house. This nonsense came just as two of the group were knitting dishcloths. Go figure.
That’s exactly what I thought when you said washcloth….Christmas presents and starting “earlish” as well. I still consider myself a NoviceB person–a few hats, a few scarves, a pair of socks, and tons of 1/2 knit projects so not quite NoviceA, but not quite Intermediate, plus I feel like I’m the slowest knitter on the planet and there is something always getting in the way of knitting time. (I admit it I’m a reader first and knitter second, but I’m trying to master the multi-task of listening to CraftLit and knitting at the same time.) So, the zen of doing some simple knitting for Christmas presents sounds wonderfully relaxing and the pattern you chose is beautiful.
I use wash cloths to test stitch patterns. They are fun, useful, and all sorts of people will use them.
Serendipity. After several years of increasing my abilities as a knitter, getting more and more intricate in patterns, I recently decided to knit some dish towels. With bobbles. And matching washcloths. Audaciously bright ones, because I like bright. I started a lace shawl and couldn’t get into it, and went back to the dish towels. With bobbles! I love them completely and will likely provide them to deserving recipients this Christmas.
I’ve never never knit them before, and they are quick, satisfying, and they have bobbles! Bobbles are known to repel zombies.
Funny, I just made my first washcloth a few days ago. I skipped over that phase when I first began to knit, thinking they were to easy. I recently decided that I want to start making knitted items for my home, washcloths being one of them. They are beautiful little pieces of joy.
what about making them into a towel? I have been toying with that idea, but just haven’t found the right pattern. this’ll do 😉

This is great! I’m knitting a bunch of washcloths to use as thank-you gifts, paired with a nice bar of soap. Think I might make some for myself, too, in preparation for that zombie apocalypse! Plus, you can never have too many – the laundry machines seem to eat them.
Amen! Last summer when I was not working and had finished a HUGE chore, I had all the time in the world to knit. I knit dishcloths. A year later, I’m so glad I did. Yours are so beautiful!
These look nice to me. I made my MIL a washcloth paired with a nice soap a couple of years ago, and she said she really liked it (I don’t know if she uses it, but it was a fun quick knit, so I don’t care that much).
Very pretty. I just gave my sister some Knit Picks Dishie for her birthday and to seed her stash (just taught her and my other sister to knit a few weeks ago, mwhahaha). Now she can make pretties for her nest.

I use my own knitted washcloths (but, um, not lace entrelac), and they last for-ev-er. The only reason I knit a new one is because I get tired of using the old one.
Washcloths with a nice bar of soap are my go to gift. The first time someone receives one they are surprised by it but then they come back asking for more.
This encapsulates my love of knitting and using handknit washcloths in so many ways. When faced with a choice, who wouldn’t go for the nubbiness of those knit cloths? My preference is for Plymouth Yarn’s Fantasy Naturale for a beefy texture.

There are few things more luxurious to this knitter than a linen washcloth and handmade soap from The Plaid Butterfly. I always make sure that combination lives in my gym bag. Also, washcloths are THE BEST projects for beginning knitters. Learn new techniques with an almost instant gratification time frame and you’ve got something useful all year round at the end of it all. Plus, if it looks like a spider on crack made it, who cares?! It’s a washcloth.
Can’t believe I’m about to write this: you’ve got a convert. Suddenly, handknit washcloths seem the best idea ever. Just as I once said I would never make socks (why would one do such a thing?…and now I’m never without a sock on needles), I’ve never considered making a washcloth. About to change. Fresh, quick, usable, lovely. Wish someone would say the same about me.
OMG. Now I crave to knit washcloths. It’s been ages since I have. . .though I still have fond memories of my niece claiming I had really made a blanket for her B-word doll’s bed in the B-word Dream House!
Knit cloths are the best, and yes, they do last longer….. I get to be amused that my manly men teenage boys are using pink and purple handknit cloths instead of store bought or bath poufs.

I just finished a pair exactly like this, in Bee Stitch. I loved that the stitch is so easy to do – just knitting, really – but the finished effect looks so much richer.
Chiming in with all of you. I do up my washcloths with a spiffy paper bag label around three of them that just specifies me as the knitter. I like things in threes. Then I pop it in a wee little basket. Instant gift. Sometimes I do two sets of three. For those special moments, or special people. I got a couple of pictures on my ravelry: 3strands. Now if I made soap, I would definitely be adding that to the basket too. Good job, Elizabeth!
I am going to have to (try to) stop reading this blog. Every time I read, I have more ideas of what I want to knit. And my knitting time is all booked up until about 2034.
Now I want to make everyone I know some nice white washcloths for Christmas. Or Thanksgiving. Or Easter. Or any other time I feel like giving them a present.
I knit a TERRIBLE washcloth for my sister, too loose a gauge and not very interesting. But, you know, a year later, when I visited her again, I still loved it. That’s the thing about washcloths. They have a beauty of their own.
I tend to crochet my washcloths, I prefer knitting, but the washcloths seem to last better when crocheted.
I knit washcloths for my mother-in-law and sister-in-law for Christmas last year. I bought some local, handmade soaps to go with them and bundled them into a small basket. They were big hits!
I love knitting washcloths because they are nice, quick, mindless projects that I can finish while I binge on Netflix. 🙂
I am about to cast on my very first sweater (and it’s for me!) as I am doing the Peace Fleece KAL. As I gather up my courage to do something bigger – and more complicated – than I ever have, you are luring me back to washcloths! Love the simplicity of your pictures.
I make about a dozen dishclothes as a wedding gift for any wedding I get invited to. I googled knit dishcloth patterns and found a site that has a very long list of different patterns, so when I make ones for a wedding I do hearts and the word love and sometimes wedding rings and hearts. Sometimes if the bride or groom as a hobby I can even find a dishcloth pattern to match.

I always have a washcloth on the needles. A nice bar of soap and a hand knit washcloth is a great little gift – for a new Mom, good friends in need of a lift, and to myself. I like the white – reminds me a of a nice hotel or a spa. Nice touch!
I knit for family. When i knit beautiful lace shawls i hear not too much…when i knit washcloths and market bags they go crazy. go figure.

I feel exactly the same way. My teenage girls also love and covet the tribbles that I make and keep in a basket on the sink.

I love them too – worn facecloths get demoted to dishcloths then to dusters, garden tool cleaners and are finally thrown into the compost when they are more holes than cloth. Mine are usually the simple garter stitch sort where the cloth is always a square but I have been known to make fancier ones and I feel some bee stitch coming on! Thank you Stephanie.
Dishcloths (or spa cloths, if the recipient might like that better and depending on the weight of cotton used) make lovely little gifts. My daughter has been making them for a number of years now to use as teacher Christmas and end of year gifts. A couple of cloths, with a jar of jam or a Tim’s card, and she gets the most wonderful thank you notes every time. I believe some of the teachers are sad to see my grandkids move to the next grade – they’ll miss the “goodies”. Knit as many as you like – they take the edge off the big stuff and can be as simple (garter) or as complicated (entrelac lace) as you need for your brain at any given time.
I’ve made washcloths and dishcloths and NOTHING washes faces, bodies or dishes quite so well! No shop bought cloth could EVER match up to them. You go girl!!!! xxx
A little ‘mindless’ knitting is a good thing. I love to do something that isn’t complicated and a bit repetitious, especially after a big job has been done. It is kind of soothing. I think washcloths are perfect for that. A few years back, I knit 2 washcloths and a small kitchen towel (the kind that have a tab to hang on a fridge door or oven door bar) for a few people as small thank you gifts. Those little packets were more appreciated than most gifts that I have given. I felt very clever as I was new to knitting.
Lovely washcloth, and I agree that they are fast, satisfying to knit, and great as gifts. But do you ever get the reaction I’ve had from some recipients of washcloths, and even baby blankets (!), who put them away on a shelf or just display them in a basket, because “they’re too pretty to use”? I just can’t fathom that reaction. I tell them that I would be honored if the cloth or blanket is worn to shreds. In my book, that’s the best kind of appreciation.
Dishclothes… or wash clothes… are the perfect knit. I discovered them a couple years ago when I was mentally incapable of anything more challenging.
I am glad to know that is Sugar and Cream because the big cone made me think you were making wash clothes out of fingering weight yarn and I couldn’t fathom finishing a washcloth in one night that was fingering weight. I can’t actually finish a worsted weight one in an evening but that is me.
This is funny, because I was just watching Battlestar Galactica today, and thinking that if I was on one of those ships, I would totally be taking people’s old sweaters and reknitting them into new ones.
And think how useful our stashes and skills will be when it comes to bartering for essentials. I love making face flannels!
Hand knitted washcloths are great. I have made quite a few, a great way to learn new patterns, and in the end you have something useful!
Knitted washcloths rock! Give them as baby shower gifts, as Christmas gifts and sell them at Craft Fairs. I have people ask me to make them once they have gotten their first ones. My grandkids love ’em.

Sometimes there is nothing more refreshing than a simple knit. I don”t do any thing as complex as your knitting, or creative, however, after a sweater a few socks or a washcloth is restorative. I have made some from linen (Euroflax) and from chenille. Ahhhh.

Well now, I’ve knit quite a few things more complex than a washcloth, but I’ve never encountered “knit 1 below” as shown in the bee stitch link you gave. Learn something new every day, even when it’s on a washcloth.

The dishcloths look great – such a nice stitch effect and so clean looking.
Your post has given me an idea for a longer version (rectangular) which can be used as a back washing cloth for an older friend who does not have the flexibility to get to some areas with a regular washcloth. (a hand towel is too big to get all wet)
Personally, I seldom use regular washcloths because they are too thick and don’t dry well. Could you (and perhaps others) comment on how well these open weave knitted cloths dry (when wrung out and hung up properly, of course)?
Could you suggest a slightly more open stitch which is beginner simple? I’m hung up on drying, I guess.

About every 4-5 years, I knit a big stack of dishcloths to send out with Christmas presents. They’re the only kind I use, and I love how well they work & how long they last.
Washcloths rock! In a textured stitch, and a natural material ( cotton, hemp) they are natural, gentl exfoliators and when paired with some lovely handmade soap, a perfect gift. Even if not made in a decorative pattern, they are still useful and very welcome gifts. I sometimes add a spa headband (narrowish, say 2.5 inches wide, Moebius in plain g st) Lovely!
As for dishcloths, I have to say that the most useful kitchen cloths I own are the half-dozen burgundy cotton cloths I bought at the local thrift shop, lovingly handmade by someone. They are hardy, absorbent, do not stain, and wash and dry like a dream. Can’t imagine what I did before I had them, could never understand why anyone would use pastels in the kitchen and then have to bleach them all to heck to keep them looking clean!
Once again, you reveal your knitting genius. Your rally posts have inspired me – I’ve been at odds with my knitting projects for six months now, frogging completed sweaters and partial projects that just do not seem to go to my liking – they’ve ALL been ripped out. Common denominator would be ME. Hmmm. I was trying to come up with “mindless knitting projects” in some attempt at maintaining sanity as I return to college for my master’s degree – stacks of lovely white washcloths in a variety of patterns is simply brilliant! I’ve added the “365 Knitting Stitches a Year Perpetual Calendar” to my project bag(I did say mindless, I cannot seem to even think to create a dishcloth pattern) – and two years from now I hope to have a master’s degree and 365 completed washcloths. Cheers for the humble washcloth! I must say that I have made a good many of those, and I will not use anything else. They last forever, through multiple washings, and so far, nothing store-bought comes close. In my knitting group, we take 3 in coordinating colors, tie them with a pretty ribbon and sell them at our Holiday Fair. We always sell out.
As I’ve made one and am making another lace shawl for my girls who are getting married this year, I had the same thought about washclothes and Christmas. Altho I’m also making the soap… mostly because I have everything here from when I made a ton of it for the Farmers Market a couple years ago.

Funny, I’m nearly done with a washcloth in Hempathy yarn, with a little 4-row pattern of diagonal purls across it and I am enjoying it so much! My knit group was equally puzzled–a wash cloth? But, if you kept going it would be a cute scarf…Yes, but then I’d have to keep going! This is a pleasure.

About a year ago, I gave up paper towels in the kitchen for knit wash clothes. I keep a stack next to the sink, and there has only been maybe one or two occasions where I wished for a paper towel. Not bad, I say.
Santa (my mother) gives me a stack of handknit dishcloths every single year. A few years, my sister did too. I actually put away two of the dishcloths my sister made me right after she passed away in 2012. I can’t bear to wear them out.
The day Santa isn’t able to leave me dishcloths will be a really sad day for lots of reasons. In fact I haven’t knit one for years, but I might never be able to for sentimental reason. Sad.
Last Christmas I made wash cloths for the gals in my knitting group—all different colors, patterns and sizes because I really don’t like doing the same thing twice. I wrapped them around a nice bar of soap. Used I Can’t Believe That’s Cotton, available in the U.S. at Hobby Lobby. inexpensive, comes in many colors, very soft and washes and wears super nicely.
Prior to a move, I made up a basket of wash and dish cloths for friends to choose from as a parting gift. Great for babies and grand kids, too.
That’s the perfect dish/washcloth stitch I’ve been searching for. Who knew? Time to get out the dc cotton stash and whip some up. Derring-do (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/derring-do) as you say is all well and good, but ‘the daily’ is the stuff of which delights are made! 🙂
I received a hand knitted dishcloth as a wedding gift 13 years ago. I just recently had to consign it to the trash — not a single one of the many other dishcloths I’ve had has lasted that long, I can assure you!
I have made us several other ones when it dawned on me how long that one was lasting: knitted, crocheted, and woven. They too are holding up better than the store bought ones.
Why would a knitter buy a dishcloth/washcloth? Ours are prettier, personal, and last a WHOLE lot longer. Knit on! Those are gonna be outstanding holiday gifts!
My grandmother died 17 years ago and when we cleaned out her house we found a TON of knit washcloths. Long before I knew how to knit I remember her sitting at her dining room table, smoking, doing the crossword and knitting a dishcloth. The ones she knit are finally coming to the end of their lifespan and I’m thinking now would be a good time for me to knit a few… for practical as well as sentimental reasons 🙂
Welcome back, Stephanie, to the world of wonderful knitting of gifts that almost everyone really appreciates — the hand knit dish cloth or wash cloth! You have just one cone of that wonderful cotton yarn — I must have at least four cones, each one ready to jump into my knitting bag within the next few months. I have knit dish cloths for many, many years. I have likely knit more than one thousand dish cloths, and I continue to knit them. As long as they are made from 100% cotton they make wonderful gifts at any time of the year. I give them away almost as fast as I knit them. Some people tell me the cloths are too good to use — so I knit a dishcloth made from all the odds and ends of my 100% cotton yarns, tied together, with the yarn ends hanging out. Once that dish cloth is used I get a request\ for more. I love giving the dish cloths to men as a retirement gift. Almost every man who has received one immediately puts it on his head! Why? I have no idea. Shortly after the first President Bush retired I was on the same airplane on which Barbara Brush was riding — she had spoken in Boise at a literacy fundraiser in Boise the night before. I gave the retired President, via Barbara, a hand knit dish cloth. Dish cloth knitting is my carry along knitting — I almost always knit the garter stitch diamond cloths because I can knit them in the dark or in my sleep! Cast on four stitches; knit three stitches, yarnover, knit to the end of the row. Repeat until the cloth is half the size you want it. Knit two, knit two together, yarnover, knit two together, knit to the end of the row until you have just four stitches. Bind off. Happy bath cloth and dish cloth knitting!
Ignore the naysayers. You’re still your practical self. Besides, this way you get the satisfaction of finishing things! Over and over! And getting co cast on something else – woo hoo! You have plenty of finicky projects in time out. Why not relax a bit while you recover from your crazed months? Washcloths & handmade soaps are the most wonderful gifts.
Thank you for this post. I have just found out Paddy, my cat (my best friend in the world), has cancer. He is still in the at home phase, able to eat and drink and enjoy his day, but he’s not eating quite enough and I am awaiting further deterioration for “the time”. It’s so hard because I have home nursed two beloved relatives through cancer as well, so it feels like my dreaded lot in life to be dealt this again. I’m thankful for your post because while I had switched gears in my WIPs, my “simple” project is a wild coloured sock in progress and I’m just not feeling it, so a new washcloth or perhaps hand towel might be just the thing for some zen knitting and peace of mind in this tough time. Thank you, it was just the right post in the right moment for me…almost like a hug just when needed.
No matter what, dishcloths are always useful. I find myself filling a mini gift bag from the dollar store with 3, comfortably, and gifting them at Christmas as ‘stocking stuffers’ of sorts, to at least 3 or 4 people including my parents, inlaws, and neighbors.
I can assure you, they get used and well worn by the following Christmas – which I, too, love. 🙂 As basic as they are, I’ve found them to be the most used and most appreciated out of most of my knitting.
The problem with things like scarves and sweaters, is that they’re all extremely seasonal, so their recipients can only enjoy them for a few weeks or couple months out of an entire year. What’s wonderful about dishcloths is that they’re practical and enjoyable every day!

I’m right with you on this. Sometimes you need something simple to do and very useful. I have one that my sister gave to me a week before she died. I LOVE it and will never toss it out. It will just finally be this scrappy little wad of yarn grasped in my hand and I’ll bite anyone who tries to take it away. So there! *stomps foot*

Last year I bought my dad a hand-carved coffee scoop. (This is relevant, I promise) It was small, it actually wasn’t that expensive (etsy is amazing) and I felt a little embarrassed, seeing it next to things I got other people. But it is one of his favorite gifts of all time. He waxes rhapsodic about holding a little piece of beauty in his hand every single day as he makes his coffee. Handknit washcloths are like handknit socks–I never understood until a fellow knitter showed me one. I have been gifted with several and treasure and use them every day. I love that your family loves yours (and that you’re spreading the word–good, useful gift, fits everyone, knits up fast. Yes!)
I knit washcloths and dishcloths and baby bibs from Sugar ‘n’ Cream when I need some mindless knitting. A question: how do you weave in the ends so they stay woven in? I have to resort to sewing them down with the sewing machine.
I’ve been working my way through Barbara Walker’s stitch collections making cotton dishcloths and potholders – just stitch together two dishcloths for a nice thick, sturdy potholder. It’s addictive – terrific way to try out new stitches and patterns.

I find it’s a great project to leave by the phone. I have a headset I plug in (for long calls) and then I can pick up my knitting…
I’m sitting here with no knitting to do because I’m out of yarn for my blanket (I was given it by my neighbor, and it’s discontinued) and need to find an appropriate substitute and you have given me an idea of what to knit! Not only can they be whipped up quickly, you can take them anywhere!
I knit a pile once in a while to sort of cleanse the needles after something complicated. Gives me time to prepare for the next project and they are useful. People seem to like them but not impressed because they are commonplace.

These are great for no-brainer knitting. Throughout the year I knit a BIG stack of them and at Christmas time bring out the knitted goodies box with scarves, hats, and washcloths and watch the fun and everyone dives in for some treasure.

Love it! My mom knit about 40 for me this spring. Me and my daughter in law used them bundled with soap and a pretty basket for hostess thank you gifts for her bridal shower. I had planned to help knit them but was frantically knitting her wedding veil.
We always have hand knit washcloths and dishcloths at our church bazaar and we often have people waiting at the door for them when we open. They are great in the kitchen as well as the bath.
I love hand knit washcloths. I make them, we use them, and I give them for gifts all the time. They are perfect when you need something fast and quick. And they do wash better than store bought cloths. Also, knitting needles may be very helpful after the zombie apocolypse for a great many reasons.

I actually had to explain that to my knitting group. I mentioned that I needed to make some washcloths, and they were shocked. I couldn’t understand why.
First, I have 3 people in my life who are pregnant, and nothing is better for a baby than hand knit cotton washcloths. Second, they are a fun, easy project I can do when I am to tired to do anything else. I keep a drawer of them, so if I ever get invited to a last minute party, 3 or 4 washcloths and a bar of nice soap is a great last minute present!

My mom knit washclothes/dishcloths/pot holders for many years. I used them and always asked for more, building a good stash of them carefully stored away for the future. My mom has been gone for 9 years, and I happily use her work every day, and have a supply that if I’m reasonably careful will last the rest of my life.
I LOVE hand crafted washcloths almost as much as hand crafted socks. The washcloth and special soap combo is a great gift – I like to do this every few years. Here is a variation – make the washcloth a rectangle – fold in half to make a square and sew up two sides- drop in the bar of soap and sew up the last side. I have also made washcloths in 3 inch squares – good for makeup removal or tonner application. Much softer than cotton balls.
My sister knit wash cloths and gave them to her staff, paired with soaps, a few Christmases back. It’s a great gift idea!
We were just commenting the other day on how we will have enormous influence after the zombie apocalypse, as we will be a reliable source of clean socks. 🙂

I love making facecloths. I make mine with linen yarn and have a blast choosing stitch patterns from my multitude of stitch dictionaries. Some are plain, some lacy, some textured and some even multicolored. My mother thought I was crazy when I gave them to her (with nice soap) but adores them now. I have a few on the needles that need to be finished soon.
I have always said that people will love us knitters when the zombies finally come. I will keep a few fiber beasts in my walled-up back yard, and will barter knit things for clean water, fresh food and medicine. Skeptics will appreciate my knitting then.

I knitted petal washcloths during family reunion last month. By the end of the week, every family got one. They all exclaimed how they were going to use them as doilies, too pretty to use, etc. so I would take them, wash and wring them out on their presence and say “There, now they’re baptized”.
I may fuss over Christmas gifts for teachers– complicated cowls and cabled scarves or shawls of lace, but there is nothing better than some handmade soaps and washcloths as end of year thank yous.

Basic socks and washclothes are the soothing simple knitting each knitter needs from time to time and they make wonderful gifts. When you are very accomplished in a technique some people expect you to do those things all the time. Maybe they just forget about simple boiled potatoes most days and now and again pommes duchesse? Basic things rock, like pancakes and apples, walking and swimming, you never have to fret over how to do it, makes for simple summertime knitting in the garden, chatting away with whomever is there with you, try that with a lace pattern. Homemade soap by a friend? When it is getting colder I will be knitting to felt slippers again. Good gift too.
I’ve been working on a stack of dishcloths. I had made some a few years ago as gifts, as well. One of my Mom’s friends recently saw one in my Mom’s kitchen and nearly begged my Mom to have me make her some more….so, here i am. I had a lovely friend donate a bag full of unused cotton and i’ve been knitting these things up like nobody’s business!! 😀

I love knitting washcloths. I love learning new stitches without “investing” a lot of time or energy in a stitch that I may discovery that I abhor.
Knitting washcloths was, actually, my first adventure into lace. Then I figured that if I can do lace in an 8″ square, I can surely handle a shawl.
And my kids love it when I do a washcloth and matching back scrubber thing.

I consider myself a pretty experienced knitter. I knit lace, fair isle, intarsia, entrelac. I knit, weave, quilt and embroider. But nothing beats knitting a washcloth for meditation and balance.
I’ve been knitting washcloths since my girlfriend’s great aunt, who used to knit them for her, passed away. My friend’s daughter has now taken over for hers, but I knit them for myself, and for others. They make great hostess gifts.
Most of the ones I make are of the “Grandma’s Favorite” variety, but I keep fiddling with it to make the corners more consistent.
When my father-in-law was ill, my husband had gone to look after him while his sister was away, but he passed away just after my husband arrived. In the rush to get myself and my daughter out to where he was (plane ride for us, he had driven), you guessed it – I left without any knitting. A quick trip to the five and dime for needles and Sugar ‘n Cream was necessary to preserve sanity. Under normal circumstances, I buy the yarn when it is on sale and/or on cones. Most of mine are white or cream and I wash them with a bleach load.
I know this is not a unique idea but for the first time ever I want to knit some washcloths. What a fantastic gift idea and I know exactly which cotton I want to use. Thank you for the details on how to knit one up.
This is one of those Duh moments in my life. I have been the recipient of numerous DISH cloths in some very weird colours. So in my mind they’ve always been ‘dish cloth’ but when I saw that beautiful white WASH cloth I saw expensive spas and long luxurious baths. How did I miss the fact that here was the perfect WASH cloth where I could practice fancy stitches, make my bathroom the envy of my guests AND make great Christmas gifts? Sometimes I wonder what other wonders my brain is hiding from me….

I think that washcloth is beautiful. My dishtowels are giving out, and I think I see some knitted dishtowels replacing them.
The EXACT same thing happened to me. One time when I was about 10 my mom gave me money to buy christmas presents and I made the entire family those potholders you make with the cotton loops and the little metal frame.
20 years later everyone I made them for was still using them.
In the meantime, I’d learned to knit, crochet, weave, etc. And I’d made incredibly elaborate things for everyone. And then I noticed the state of everyone’s 20 year old potholders and decided to make new ones. My mom had the same exact reaction…. until I asked her if she wanted some new potholders. 🙂
P.S. They all loved them. And I sort of loved making everyone’s christmas present in a few days instead of a few months. I was going to weave dishtowels to go with them (to justify it to myself as a worthy project, perhaps…) but I had a baby instead.
I sort of go in spurts with dishcloths. My dad loves them for washing dishes. I usually make him one or two for Christmas or his birthday. He is always thrilled to get them and he doesn’t even care what colour they are 🙂
I usually use a stitch pattern that goes: knit 2 rows, then seed stich for two rows (k1p1), reapeat those 4 rows, with the garter stich border. I am totally going to try that stitch though!
I’ve never understood the derisive glances I get even from fellow knitters for abasing myself by knitting WASHCLOTHS. I mean really. If I’m capable of knitting complicated lace, cables or other things, I should do ONLY THAT.
Except everyone in my family LOVES the knitted washcloths, and I’m more than happy to keep everyone supplied.

my Dad and I were talking about how we would handle a (non-zombie) apocalypse, and I mentioned that he shouldn’t come to get me, that they should save my share of “resources” for my nieces (I don’t have kids). I made washcloths for the men in my clan last Christmas, paired with some bars of Filthy Farmgirl soap, themed to match their personalities. They were a nice stocking-stuffer and were (I think) appreciated. At least the soap names were chuckled over. Who can resist a soap named “Filthy Pirate”?
Thanks for the washcloth endorsement. I have been making them too, but I don’t like using worsted weight cotton, so I use DK or even sport weight. It makes each washcloth (we called them “washrags” when I was growing up) take more than a single evening of knitting, but they dry faster, which is important here in the humid zone.

I just love hand made washcloths! I have made a stack of about cloths that is about 12 inches high. My mother gives the whole family, parents and kids two cloths and a double thick potholder every year for Christmas! She told me she has about 48 done for this year. We love them and never buy them at a store. 😉

i knit a washcloth while on vacation this last week. we stayed in an old cabin (built in 1924!!), and when i left, i left the washcloth. it belonged there. i hope the other guests will use it like i did- moving cast iron, washing dishes in the creek, holding baked potatoes right out of the fire. it will last forever. i am totally stealing this christmas idea, especially for my sibs who are just starting on their own. we are totally gods, us knitters.
I make knitted dish cloths all the time. They’re the only kind I use. My sisters like the knitted ones better than store bought too. I think they last longer than store bought cloths.

Hmm, this surprises me. I love having the skill to make the rudimentary things I use every day. I still marvel and a little basket weave dishcloth I made for my Mom a few summers ago and think it is time to churn out a few more.
Besides, when life is complicated, rudimentary really helps take the edge off and I’m in the middle of a kitchen renovation. I may knit a truckload of these to get through it.
At some point simple becomes elegant.
I was looking over my recent Ravelry projects and was bemused to see the number of washcloths showing up there in 2013. I was similarly bemused at the amount of kitchen cotton in my stash. But I like to knit at certain entertainment events where the lights are out, and while I enjoy working on a sock or a hat, now and then I drop or split a stitch, or get lost on something, and everything goes to hell. I decided I would work on something where little errors wouldn’t ruin the project or my happiness, and now I’m knitting very simple washcloths at a variety of cultural events. And we’ve tossed out many old ratty cloths that were past their prime.

Our bathroom is well-supplied with handknit washcloths. Commercially made ones are saved for, well, extreme grime or ick.
It’s one thing I always keep in the car: a cone of cotton yarn and size five needles for washcloths, so I am never caught without knitting.
We joke about the zombie apocalypse among our friends, but I know people who probably would actually fight to have me in their camp: I can shear, spin, dye, knit, weave and crochet … I can hand-sew and use a treadle machine … I can start a fire without matches or a lighter … also I can purify water … I have both First Responder and Vet Tech training … I can train dogs and horses … grow a garden … make compost … make beer or wine … bake bread … grow a garden … find wild vegetable foods … I’m an an archer, and I know how to make bows and arrows from scratch. I still have my ham radio license and I think I still remember Morse Code. I also never go anywhere without a swiss Army Knife. I think that about covers it.
When the Zombie Apocalypse comes, us low-techs and/or old farts will become highly valuable people, while the rest of the world weeps over their blank iPhones, with no idea how to cook supper or start a fire. I’ll feel badly for them, I think.

I love making washcloths/dishcloths, I just made a few myself. I was given cookies in a small plastic container at our bible study, instead of returning a empty container I knit 2 dishcloths and added 2 scrubbys and placed them in the containers as a thank you. It brings back memories , I had knit some for my daughters teacher and she was touched. She told us about her grandma, she also knit them and had passed away. A washcloth is a perfect opportunity to teach someone to knit, it was my first project. I enjoyed this post.
I SO HEAR you!! I have been knitting for years and I still love love making wash clothes. They are also in my families bathrooms, including mine, and we all love them. They are so wonderful and my partner loves nothing else to wash her face with. So yes, I still knit them, I love to order lots and lots of cotton for a fraction of the price of wool just to feel super rich with color!!!! then knit a stick of pretty pretty wash clothes. My reading of this post (especially the PS) serendipitously coincided with a conversation my boyfriend and I were having about the Zombie Apocalypse. He was watching a show on TV about the Zombie apocalypse and, since we both know I will be useless in combat, he relegated me to an engineer/driver/radio communicator type role. I said that I thought of myself more as the pioneer woman, making clothes and other essential items, and preserving food for winter. He said, that too, but also the radio/driver thing *sigh* Well, I AM a better driver than him.

Stephanie, I LOVE the washcloth. I am working on one now doing it exactly as you did, with the six-row garter-stitch at the beginning and the three garter stitches at each edge. I’m about half-way finished. Mine is coming out 7″ across in the pattern stitch including the three garter stitches at each edge. What size is yours? Is 7″ a good size? Another queston: I have made several dish cloths and they always stretch when wet, just as some others said in their comments. I have knit and crocheted them, and either way, they stretch. Is there a way to avoid this?
