Dear New Socks,

I love you.

Your simple lack of green-ness and the decency with which you are not a step-out would be enough dear ones, but even without comparing you to other socks I have known…you are a thing of wonder. Considering that I just slapped you together as another variation of my sock pattern to use on the show, I’m so glad we’ve found each other.

When I charted your fair isle on the graph paper I had a feeling that you would be something special. When I started knitting the graph after your ribbing….I was moved to see the sock you were growing into.

The variegated Fleece Artist against the black of your contrast is strong but balanced, delicate but geometric….short…but long enough. I loved these qualities in you enough to cast on immediately for your second sock. I know that when we go together to LA on Monday we will have a wonderful time. You’re going to make someone on my Christmas list really, really happy.

  12. Oh how beautiful!! I would like to be able to knit something like that someday! I am now working on an easy knitting pattern to make a small pull over sweater for my grandson who will be 2 on New Years Eve. I would like to get into a class to learn how to make socks.

  25. I love that pattern! That Freece Artist colourway really does go well with the black yarn! It makes the little bits of colour stand out even brighter.

    Quick question if you have time…a friend has become involved with a Lama (Buddhist type not fiber bearing type) who is going back to Tibet …the children there are suffering and he is going to help as he can…some knitting angels an I are trying to get some scarves and hats made to send with him…still not sure when the trip is…Do you know of any knitting groups or individuals that may be interested in helping?

  41. Hi Steph – these are beautiful socks! will you be offering a pattern for them? I don’t always choose to knit socks with patterns (usually varigated yarn is as wild as I get) but these are so pretty, I would love to try making a pair. Good luck on the show. I teach knitting and hear a lot about knitty gritty (I don’t get cable) and my knitters always get good info from the show…we all enjoy your books, saw you in Skaneateles, and will look forward to seeing you on KG! (Someone will have to tape it for me)

  43. Watched “Nitty Gritty” for the first time yesterday. They knit a scarf based on Fibonaci Number series. Lots of step outs – all the same color, etc. Yours will be so superior!

  44. Ah, very lovely. I’ve been seeing a lot of black with variegated yarn lately and really loving it. I just bought some bright green, blue and purple Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn today and I think it’s going to be getting the black fair isle treatment.

  57. You’ve hit on something here. I’ve seen some fair isles with two different variegated yarns which can at times be seizure-inducing. “One of each” is a perfect solution.
    I also can’t believe you’re doing more socks ON PURPOSE but you’re pretty unbelievable (in a good way).

  65. Please make sure you wrote down everything you did for those fair isle socks – I HAVE to have the pattern, I already own all your books, so if you are going to put it in a future book, that’s not a problem but we do need this pattern.

  75. Maybe it’s been said before, but did it ever to occur to you that green should not be the color you choose for any extensive project? I mean, the Green Afghan, green step-outs…Nice comeback, though! Perhaps the completed step-outs should be on the gift list instead, happily worn by others until there are holes in the soles.

  79. Hi, I have a question I hope you can answer.I have been coming across patterns that suggest size 2.5mm needles and ALL the charts I have and ALL the people I have asked don’t have that size…. There are 2.25 and 2.75. What is a usa knitter to do?

  80. Well, what can I say that hasn’t already been said? Fist, the socks are beautiful! Can’t believe you designed them yourself…I am totally not there yet but striving to become that good. And I second the lady who wrote “YOU ROCK!”
    Second, I cam across a blog that Vickie Howell, the host of Knitty Gritty writes about the show! Pretty cool, huh? I am thinking that when you are on she is going to just LOVE you and write all about it. If you link to my blog there is a link to hers!
    Third, I noticed on the website for the DIY Network that some of the Knitty Gritty shows have video media available. Maybe you could ask the producer of the show if she can make that available for your episode for all of those who don’t have cable. If she cann’t do that then I have another solution that I wrote about on your last post. To make it quick, maybe I could start a “Pass It On” program where the people who get the show can tape it and pass it on to those of your loyal readers who don’t. Check out my blog and tell me if you are interested in it.

    Re Mart’s question, although I’m sure umpteen others will answer [g]: one place to get 2.5’s/#1’s is at KnitPicks (www.knitpicks.com). NAYY, just really good needles and reasonable prices. (These aren’t their interchangeables; they sell the smallest sizes only as dpns or fixed circulars.) This, mind you, from someone who doesn’t like metal needles. Not even metal tips on circulars. But when I started making socks I bought the KnitPicks Classics circulars, and I love ’em. I think I have 8 pr. by now, because, you know, you can’t work on just one pair of socks at a time. Right?

  90. This has nothing to do with your post today, but I wanted to share with you how you have inspired the knitters at Albion College in Albion, Michigan, USA.
    A while back, you dyed some yarn with indigo. My friend Amanda (you met her in Ann Arbor, with our friend Mouse) and I were really excited by the idea of dying yarn and numerous times, when hand dyed yarn has been shown on your site, we have discussed how fun it would be to dye yarn. Last year we tried with kool-aide and that worked alright, but this year the knitting club on campus (BritKnits) decided to ask the school for money to pay for yarn and dye. We just spent today, two days before final exams, dying yarn, hanging out, knitting, and having an excellent time. We had such a great time and I have met the best people in the knitting club. Amanda and I have shared this site with everyone we know, knitter and non-knitter alike, and we all love it. Thank you so much for helping us to make wonderful friends. The yarn is beautiful too 🙂

  96. Wow, Albion College paid for YARN? I should have gone there. Instead I went to Michigan Tech. However, one of my bosses is the Chair of the Chemical Engineering department. He taught a break-out class on dyeing this summer with all natural dye. And then he gave me all the left overs. He reminds me, when he sees me knitting, that Chemical Engineering was born because people wanted to find different color dyes.
    Very cool.

    Unfortunately, I’ve labored under the delusion that I indeed have the DIY channel. Apparently, I DID when we had satellite. We now are back to cable (for the hubby’s sports channels in Hi-def) and DIY is now a thing of the past.
    I’m bummed.

In spite of the fact that my favorite dress in high school (many years ago) was green, I haven’t been too thrilled with the color since we were first married (also many years ago) and green was a very popular color. Our friends variously had – green sofas, green carpet, green curtains, green cars, and so on. I think avocado green was a popular kitchen appliance color at the time also – don’t go there, I won’t confess the dates.
    Thank goodness you are now out of the clutches of the (green) Loch Ness monster, and moving on to the beautiful socks you have posted today. Neato. Come to think of it, you could turn those step-outs into some Loch Ness monster hand puppets….. Or better still, put them away so you don’t have to re-create them again.
    I’m thinking it will be some time before you post a green anything.

  134. O Wonderful Yarn Harlot, double hooray for you! Those are wonderful; self-striping yarn is the closest I could ever come to that sort of thing. Say…..you know, Chanukah comes before Christmas (Dec 15 at sundown). If those darling fair isle sockies are found to be of the Jewish persuasion, I volunteer to be the icy-toed Badger to take them in……….     I got such a kick out of your last posting. When I was in grade school I had to write a love letter from my foot to my sock. I really enjoyed that writing project. I don’t remember my mom saving much of my homework for sentimental purposes but she has that one. Your posting made me think of that and made me smile. I love your blog. Keep up the amazing work.   144. So clever, the black and variegated yarns. I have many skeins of variegated yarns and I’m ho hum about them. They don’t really show fancy stitch patterning as well as I’d like and I’m not to thrilled about making another plain sock just to show off the changing colors. But colorwork with a solid color. Now that is nice!

  160. Hi Steph! Hey, looking over all your green socks (OMG! I would have lost my mind to knit so much of the same thing)and possible instructions, one thing that I would like to pass on from my own experiences of teaching lesson on how to knit socks is… the step on how to join the needles in the round. That’s always the part I have to go over slowly and repeat a couple of times.

  168. Beautiful, Harlot. For fun, could we see the inside of that fair isle? I’m knitting my daughter the fair isle hat from knitty.com and I’m concerned I’m not carrying the colors along correctly — feels a little more woven than knit.

    Honestly, the place is a hoot. And they’re going to love you. I wish you’d been there at the same time I was.
    Also, the vegetarian catering on the set is really pretty good.

    I have attempted my FIRST EVER fair isle sock – copying from your picture of this wondrous sock. I didn’t have black sock yarn so after 3rd rejected color attempt, decided to be BOLD and go pink. I don’t know how to properly credit/confess inspiration when it includes staring at a masterpiece and openly trying to copy it! Do I just promise not to publish it and call it my own? lol I promise!
    No luck finding someone with DIY channel & VCR yet. Damn it!

  202. I agree with the comment above–the socks DO remind me of stained glass. I have always loved black with colors. I really liked the trim around the toe. Very nice touch.

  203. Here I am convinced that good green sock yarn is impossible to find, and you find it and turn against it so quickly (time wise, I mean, not in stitch-count terms). I love the green socks, all 97 of them.
    But the new socks are awful purty. They’d be even nicer in green.

    Green socks as I have a fondness for green. The fair isle socks are fabulous. I would not have thought of putting those colors together but WOW, what a great look!   208. I’ve just been hanging out not getting anything done. What can I say? I’ve basically been doing nothing worth mentioning, but pfft. Not that it matters. Pretty much nothing exciting happening to speak of. I haven’t been up to much these days.
