March break

Day one.
Despite how it ended last year. Even though I have collected a reasonable amount of proof that March Break is some kind of hazing ritual where children try to “break” their mothers. Even though, when you really think about it, don’t you think that sending the children home for a week in the winter when you can’t even really play outside, must be some sort of tactic designed by the schools to keep parents grateful? Even though there is all that, I’ve decided that this year is going to be different. We are going to go to the museum, and to the movies, tidy the basement and work on little knitting projects. I’m not going to lose my cool this year. Just because it’s me and the girls for a week straight.. 24 hours a day…with no break from each other…is no reason to think that it’s going to go badly. A good attitude is half the battle. This year we are going to have a lovely time together.
I continued checking the swatch, and so far, my chart is error free.

I’m going to keep going, just because I really want to make sure that the edging is ok too. Speaking of an edging, what say you all? Does it need one? What kind? Pointy, rounded , diagonal….ideas? I’m thinking that it should have a really deep edging, but I can be talked out of it. Since I am obsessed with “Wedding ring” shawls, I cannot knit a shawl without checking. So far the shawl swatch passes through my wedding ring, or what passes for one in the godless heathen union that Joe and I have.

I’m thinking that even though it goes through now…once I get the edging on it likely won’t go through my ring anymore. I’m wondering (in my obsessive little way) if I’m being hampered by my tiny ring size. “Passes through a wedding ring”, well, I ask you…who’s ring? Joe’s ring is twice the size of mine. Does it have to be the knitters ring? Can I pick some enormous handed person I see walking down the street? What exactly are the rules here?

  1. Yeah. And why wedding rings specificallyl, anyway?
    What about school rings?
I think godless heathen rings are pretty much covered.
But the whole wedding ring thing makes me nervouse. Puts me in mind of Scarlett O’Hara and how one’s waist was suppose dot be small enough for a guy to put his hands around and have no space left over.
And I always thought, well, which guy? I mean, what if he had small hands?
Best to stop here, I can see where I’m going with this….

  2. I’m laughing at your *lofty* goals for the week. I always make big plans like that when my kids are home too. We are lucky if one of them is accomplished. I am usually found at the end of the week weeping in a fetal position in a dark room–utterly defeated!
But hey, good luck to you! Enjoy your week 🙂

  3. I’ve got a gorgeous wedding ring shawl my grandmother knit me. It doesn’t go through my godless heathen ring, however. [My godless heathen ring is not the living in sin type, it’s more a companion to the skull I posted on my blog a week ago] I have a feeling it would go through my dad’s wedding ring, ’cause he has enormous hands, and that is sufficient. After all, if my grandmother says it’s a wedding ring shawl, it’s a wedding ring shawl. Go with the pointy edging.

  4. Your snowdrop shawl is looking soooo pretty. I think I would put an edging on it – something dainty, with points maybe 🙂

  5. Beautiful swatch!!! love it! but, yeah, it still needs some testing *grin*
Hope you enjoy your time with your girls 🙂 I homeschool my son (he’s 10) and always have … so we’ve been together 24 hours a day for 10 years now *lol* I say take some time to yourselves … don’t run here and there and everywhere … be bored, imaginative, creative 🙂
Can’t wait to see more of that swatch!

  6. Being a newcomer to blogs, I was very pleased to discover yours. Spent the weekend going through all your earlier postings which only confirmed how much I am enjoying the company of Canadian harlots.
I also wanted to provide an update on the harlot issue. Today, you come up as #3 on google but on yahoo you only rank 9th. What might that mean?
Do please keep up your blog, it makes my days!

  7. I am a fan of dangerous-looking pointy edging. Not wimpy pointed edging. No.
As for rules. I specialize in rules. Name your own rule, and I will throw together some “heretofores” and “whomsoevers” so that it will be official. 😉

  8. I agree, more swatching is necessary. You have to be sure, right? I think you should get to choose what pagan ring you want it to fit through. My fingers are so thin that I’m not sure a shawl for my 3 yr old would fit through a ring of mine, that can hardly be fair.

  9. The swatch is lovely… Yes, keep going, need to make absolutely sure it works!
My kids had a week’s vacation in Feb, and will have another week in April. Whose idea was *that*, I ask you! And it’s likely we’ll have a snow day tomorrow. I spend most of my time mediating petty spats… Someone said grandchildren are our reward for not killing our children.

  10. One way or another school is gonna get ya! We have a break to “look forward to” in April. However, standing in the way of that fun is: one enormous grade 7 Social Studies project, one fourth grade science project, one fifth grade science project, one fourth grade book report, one fifth grade biography report and who knows what else. I am I a little crabby today??
As a displaced Canadian(Montreal, yeah)I am jealous. I love Toronto. The Connecticut shoreline is a little short on good Asian food. Ejoy your week.
    Cyndy
