It’s super hot again, and Megan (owner of Lettuce Knit – not my daughter Megan) is still pregnant, and I absolutely don’t want to be responsible for keeping her pregnant by failing to finish baby sweaters for whoever is in there.
Family myth has it that no baby is born before I finish their knitting, in fact my three daughters (one two weeks late, one two weeks early and one right on time) were born the day after I finished their blankets, as was my nephew Hank. There’s a string of them – and it’s mostly true, although a couple of years ago I did get totally messed up by a set of premature twins. Took two of them to take me down though.
Last night I got to thinking about how very pregnant she is, and how very heavy babies are towards the end, and how they are in such a really crappy place in your body, right there in your pelvis and abdomen where you used to keep organs you used all the time, like your bladder and your lungs… and the guilt just swept over me, and I stepped away from the wheel and sat down and finished the sweaters.
There’s no way that I want to be responsible, not even on a molecular level, for her being pregnant one second longer. (Besides, I think that if she thought that I was the reason she was still pregnant with this kid my life would be in danger, and it’s not like I can avoid her. She owns a yarn shop. Near my house. A yarn shop near my house with my friends in it. A yarn shop near my house with my friends in it and beer. See? Even if I tried not to go in there, we all know she’d have the best of me in a couple of days.)
The sweaters are blocking now, and I’ll have the buttons on them later, and then I’ll be able to look Megan in the eye again, and know that if she’s still pregnant, it’s got nothing to do with me.

Now why couldn’t I have had you knitting for me when I was pregnant, especially with my first (due early September in the hot and humid South, had to wait an extra week, it felt like an extra month.) From what I can see in teh photos, those sweaters are really beautiful! I’m looking forward to seeing a photo that shows the whole sweater. :o) I’m sure Meagan is hoping her baby somehow knows the YH is finished with his/her sweater so all is clear for arrival into this world.

When I was pregnant with my darling daughter, my first trimester fell during the hottest, most humid summer in Philadelphia I’d ever experienced. My dear friend’s last trimester fell during that same period. I cannot even imagine how ready she must have been for her baby to arrive! Let’s hope your friend Megan’s baby makes his/her appearance very soon!

I’m knitting a doggie sweater for our new arrival. It will be cold here again by the time he needs it, but I just can’t stop myself.
I take full and complete credit for the on-time, healthy, reasonably normal births of six babies last year, including a set of full-term twins, mind you, because I finished every single one of their handknits before the due dates. Baby blankets, cabled sweaters, hats – I knit them, I sewed them up, I blocked them, and the babies are alive and healthy today because of me.
Thank God nobody’s pregnant this year.
Your good intentions alone may help Megan have her baby on the due date, and I’m sure she will be eternally grateful if that happens.
My question is, if Megan is having a singleton and gets one sweater, what happens to the other sweater?
Where can we find the patterns for these two beautiful sweaters, thanks.

So beautiful. I can not wait to see them modeled on the little one. Lucky baby to have a fairy godmother that knits.
I volunteered to make bedding for my son and daughter-in-law two years ago when she was pregnant with twins. She was due in August and I started in February. So of course you know what happened. I started and started over and threw out what I had done and began again. Because it all just had to be perfect. And she got bigger and bigger. And ten days before she had nearly full-term twins I finally delivered the quilts, bumpers and bedskirts. I’m sure that she was as relieved as I was. I kind of felt personally responsible for keeping those babies in there because they couldn’t come until I was finished!! If it wasn’t for the last minute I’d near get anything finished!
Hah! Love it — “took two of them to bring me down”. That’s twins, tag-teaming all over.
Seriously, the sweaters are just gorgeous, and Megan? I wish you a short, painless labor — in a nice air-conditioned room!

Tell us, Stephanie, what’s it like having that kind of power over pregnant ladies? And does it work on anything else? For instance, if you decided to knit a really heavy sweater, would fall weather come the minute you finished the last stitch? (Here’s hoping!) Gorgeous knitting as usual–can’t wait to see photos of the baby in his/her lovely sweater!
And as for spinning–my husband asked me when I was going to learn to spin straw into gold. I told him that was the advanced class.
Those are a couple of lucky babies to have an honorary auntie who will commission yarn and design and knit for them. Once the sweaters are ready to wear they should send out their siren call and those sweater modeling babies should appear post haste! How could they resist?
My oldest son has a July 14 birthday (and off to college in the fall) and well I recall that whole hot weather/pregnant thing. My subsequent children were born in February and April. I guess I learned something.
Years ago when I still knit, I made a blanket for my goddaughter. It was finished a month before the due date and she was born two days after the blanket was done. It’s totally true.
Bet you anything Megan (yarn store owner, not your daughter) goes into labour tomorrow at the latest. Shall we start a betting pool?

2) How many skeins of the STR Mediumweight did you need for each sweater?
Does Megan’s baby get both sweaters? I mean girls can wear blue. Boys can wear pink. I’m sure the baby would be willing to be gender-ly open minded in the name of hand knits!
I can’t wait until you share those patterns with us. I’ll be making both! My friend on my street is due 5 days before me with a girl – so even though I’m not finding out, I’ll have someone to hand off the girl sweater to if I have a boy. And the boy sweater could totally be worn by a girl if I threw on girly buttons.
I’m currently obsessivly knitting newborn sized baby booties out of 50 Baby Bootees to Knit. I came to the harsh realization that my baby is due on Dec 5th. And oil prices are really high. And got nervous about the warmth of my baby’s feet! Cotton socks WILL NOT DO!
Oh, and little baby says ‘kickkick’ to you. It’s Her/his way of saying hi!

Beautiful! I just finished Saartje’s booties for a friend’s baby, but she was a scheduled C-section so I don’t think I had any bearing… good thing too. When my little sister was born (we’re 12 years apart) she was five before she got the blanket I was making for her. My mom might have killed me if I wielded your powers. 🙂

I’m 35 weeks today, due August 20. I am so large that I’m creating my own gravitational field. Perhaps I should finish that blanket for my wee lass before I go supernova. And maybe get around to packing my hospital bag.

There are no words for how much suck is wrapped around having a July (or Aug or Sept (although Sept might not be that bad up there in Toronto)) due date. For her sake, I hope that baby decides to come soon. Like, really, really soon.

My first son was born tomorrow – twenty years ago – when the temperature in the hospital parking lot was 112 degrees (F). It hit the 90’s that Easter and never dipped below until after he was born! Let’s hope Megan’s wee one comes soon, now that the knitting is ready!

Babies always take priority. I wonder if you would consider writing a book about being a doula (sp?). There are so many babies popping and I had mine in a place and time that was hostile to midwiifery.
Your humour would add to the strength of the next generation.

Stephanie – don’t beat yourself up about the twins – they are in a dfferent statistical dimension – accept that as a doula with experience that you are – twins are much more likely to arriver earlier than singletons.
I finished a sweater for my nephew at the end of last week in the same kind of panic. He made his appearance today after a whole lot of labor.

Full Moon coming!!! Full moon is known for causing babies to pop–and crazies to howl or whatever they do. so between the moon and the sweaters “not your daughter” Megan gets a double whammy which should allow for a quick,easy birth.If it is as hot in Toronto as it is in Michigan I hope she has airconditioning.Nothing worse than overdue baby mixed with extreme heat, humidity and contractions that go nowhere. Hope her significant other knows all the things Megan says in the days or hours left til delivery are hormonal rants and all will be forgotten and forgiven.

Now I know why my daughter was three weeks late! There was no knitting in our lives 25 years ago. We have a picture of the midwife with soaking wet hair in nearly 100 degree weather.

Oh good on you! I just had my third baby a week ago today!! When I finished her baby blanket I was *sure* I would go into labour but it wasn’t to be…ended up being sewing the buttons on a little vest I made that did it! Had her the same day :).

I was knitting a couple of weeks ago to help keep my friend’s granddaughter in utero. Baby Hope was born at 25 weeks and 1 lb 7 oz, and we all held our breath, but 2 weeks later she’s doing well, off the vent and according to the NICU nurses, “feisty”! Maybe the Knitting Karma helped?
Of course the poor kid looks like a rhesus monkey, but that’s all of the phylogeny she had time to recapitulate (a little developmental biology humour, nevermind.)

The sweaters, what we can see of them are lovely. I sincerely hope Megan, not your daughter, is safely delivered soon. I have suffered watching my heavily pregnant daughter-in-law cope with her last month (she looked 9 months at 5 months). Fortunately she has delivered a beautiful 5th granddaughter for me (last week)and is looking far more relaxed. Being a week late I managed to knit a capelet for “Mum” as well.

First the sweaters are beautiful. I hope to some day get to that level of intricacy. But there is a yarn shop in Canada that had beer too? Now I am definitely moving up there! Or at least visiting at some point. 🙂

BTW, I mentioned in your comments that I’d been looking for a sweater pattern for years. Your readers are awesome! Within hours I had several people not only remember the pattern, post pictures for me, but also volunteer to send me a copy they had from their stash (or their mother’s stash, or their grandmother’s stash).

I am reasonably certain that I do not wield such great powers, but I hurried up and finished the BSJ I had otn for a baby due to happen at any moment. In fact, we got an email letting us know that medical intervention is planned if baby does not happen by today. Now I need only overcome my next most difficult issue and get it packaged and on the way to the happy family.
Also, instead of just talking about me, I do want to mention that those are lovely sweaters.
Oh, please do publish the pattern. It’s too cute and although all my friends and most of my godchildren are past the babybearing years, there are always co-workers etc.

A friend of mine blames me entirely for her ‘extended’ pregnancy – she left work on the Friday and I hugged her and told her we wouldn’t see her again until after he was born and… Well, she back on Monday and not very happy with me. No more hugging for me, that’s for sure!

Maybe I could use your power in the reverse, for good? My water broke last Monday at 23 wks, and I want to keep the baby IN as long as possible. Maybe if you started a baby sweater for this little one and took, say, two and a half months to finish it everything would work out like it should.
Of course, I’m the one on my bum in the hospital, so maybe I’ll see if I can get this to work on my own. Maybe I have superpowers, too.
The sweaters are gorgeous. Makes you wish you were tiny enough to wear them. I was always told that the baby comes when the baby wants, it is all up to he/she.
Just a note that might give you pleasure, my best friend is not a knitter but when we worked together last year I would read your blog during lunch, reading the funny parts to her. We both got new jobs after the first of the year. I was talking with her on the phone last night making plans to see Mama Mia this weekend and she asked what your were up to. Seems she misses her daily dose of Yarnharlot even though she doesn’t knit.

Those sweaters are gorgeous! Whether a boy or a girl that baby is going to look absolutely fabulous! And good for you for not making poor mommy stay pregnant any longer in the heat!
I also quilt, and the morning before my due date I had to go to the fabric shop for a piece of border fabric! I did have the occasional twinge during the shopping trip. The baby came the next morning, right on time (the midwife was surprised he arrived on the due date!), and I finished the quilt a while after that.
Knitting would have been easier – and quicker! Best of luck to Megan; she looks just radiant!

That was nice of you to finish the sweaters, so you don’t have to feel guilty for Megan still being pregnant! LOL! Hope Megan has her baby soon.
I was pregnant in July once, and was due August 31st, so you think I might have had to go through all of August, too, but my older daughter had other plans and was born August 4th. Wasn’t that nice of her? She was 4 weeks early, but really was fine and went home with me 4 days later (c-section). She’s almost 19 now.
Lettuce Knit has beer…I am going to immigrate to Canada…At least as soon as my baby is born and I can have beer again.

As a knitter who is fortunate to work in a yarn shop, I can vouch for the drawing power that is in the store. . . it is truely amazing. the sweaters look amazing by the way, I am sure megan was thrilled.
My co-worker is still pregnant and it’s all my fault!! I’ve been wasting time working on a turtle for a big sister gift for her daughter.
And why isn’t there beer at my LYS. When I retire I’m gonna open up a knitting bar!!
